PASSMORE, JACK A., age 58, of Wrightwood, Calif. passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2002. He was born on January 19, 1943 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to Jack (deceased) and Zelda Lackey.
Lloyd Kauffman
Lloyd Kauffman, 65, passed away Saturday, January 4, 2003. He was born February 22, 1937 in West Liberty, Ohio and was raised in Northern Michigan. Mr. Kauffman had been a resident of Pensacola since 1974. He was a retired Electrical Engineer from GE Automation.
Mr. Kauffman is survived by his wife, Jean Palmour Kauffman; three sons: Turk and Lauri of California, Todd and Gail of Cantonment and Kip and Nancy of Michigan; three brothers: Mel and Virgil of Michigan and Jerry of California; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Freda of Fairview, Michigan.
Memorial services were held on Thursday, January 9, 2003 at Faith Chapel Funeral Home in Cantonment, Florida.
Gerald Wallis
Gerald R. "Jerry" Wallis, 63, of Cadillac died at Mercy Hospital on Sunday, January 19, 2003. Jerry was born on July 7, 1939 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Frederick and Ethel (Rye) Wallis. He married
Ginny M. Loeks on June 9, 1990 on Marion Island, Traverse City. He graduated from Pickford High School and Michigan State University.
Jerry was a Customer Representative for Consumers Power for 29 years until retirement in 1996. He was a member and past trustee and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Cadillac and a member of Jaycees of Cadillac and Traverse City. Jerry was an outdoor enthusiast who lived life to the fullest and loved his family and friends.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Ginny; a daughter, Kim (Brett) Wallis-Burke of Alpena; a son, Dan (Kimmer) Wallis of Cadillac; four stepchildren: Lori (Kim) Leudeman of LeRoy, Shari (Tim) Hewett of McBain, Don (Kerry) Loeks of McBain and Dale (Jodi) Loeks also of McBain; five step-grandchildren: Kelly, Devin, Kendra, Joseph and Katelyn; siblings Bill (Carol) Wallis of Pickford, Beth (Jim) Quinnell of Pickford, Ardith (Dale) Bawks of Sault Ste. Marie; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-grandson Dusty Leudeman and step-granddaughter Kallie Loeks.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 23, 2003 at First Presbyterian Church in Cadillac with Pastor Cathleen J. Medina officiating. Burial will be in Cottle cemetery in Pickford, Michigan in the spring. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday at Hitesman Funeral Home in Cadillac. Memorial contributions may be given to the First Presbyterian Church.
Carl Nilsson
Carl A. Nilsson, 80, died January 10. A longtime resident of Seattle, Carl was born in Sault Ste. Marie on April 7, 1922. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1948 and was employed at Boeing for 45 years. He was preceded in death by his wives and close friends, Joan Nilsson and Judy Nilsson; his parents, Louis and Helen Levin, sister and brothers, Elizabeth, Ross, and Frank Levin. Carl is survived by his brother Paul Levin, FL, and sister-in-law Mary Levin, VA; daughters: Kris Nilsson, Connie Medak (Dan Kesler), Patricia Nilsson, Jill Scott (Bill); stepchildren: Debbie Jansen (John), David Bale (Lorie), Kristen Feller (Deon); grandchildren: Neil, Nick, Paul Casey West, Emily Scott; step-grandchildren: Sara and Amy Feller, Mackenzie and Morgan Bale. Cremation has taken place. Carl's life will be celebrated with a Memorial at his home on February 8.

DORIE, EDWARD "HANK," 80, of Sault Ste. Marie passed away on Monday, January 20, 2003. Arrangements are incomplete.
Karen Albrough
Karen M. Albrough passed away at her home on June 14, 2003. She was born in Sault Ste. Marie on January 3, 1944. Karen was a member of Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. She loved very much to be with her family and grandchildren.
Surviving Karen Albrough are her husband, John, of Sault Ste. Marie; her son, John (Kim) Albrough of Kannapolis, North Carolina; her daughters Pam Albrough and Mandy (Ryan) Burley, both of Sault Ste. Marie; and her mother Adeline VanLuven, also of Sault Ste. Marie. Karen's grandchildren are Kristen and Alexis Albrough, and Brendan and Blake Burley. Also surviving Mrs. Albrough are many brothers and a sister, and their families.
Visitation will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral services will take place at Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church at 6 p.m., also on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, with Reverend John Schnose officiating. Interment will take place at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left in care of the family of Karen Albrough.
Margaret Crimin
Margaret E. Crimin of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan died on Friday, June 13, 2003 at Tendercare Nursing Home is Sault Ste. Marie. She was born on September 18, 1911 in Hubbell, Michigan. She was a member of the Senior Citizens and the Rebeckah Lodge.
She is survived by two sons, Wayne Crimin of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Raymond Crimin of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; one daughter, Diane Klein of St. Louis, Missouri; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Hugh James Crimin in March 1974; a son, Alfred Crimin; and three sisters, Beatrice St. Germaine, Irene Blair, and Emma Eagle.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home, with Capt. Dennis James officiating.
Final resting place will be Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.
Memorial contributions to The Salvation Army would be appreciated.

Elizabeth McCormick
Elizabeth Ann McCormick, of Dafter, passed away unexpectedly at Marquette General Hospital on October 2, 2003. She was born in Saginaw on June 3, 1947. Elizabeth was a Brimley High School graduate, and currently co-owner of John's Septic Service. She loved her husband, children, and grandchildren very much, her grandchildren were particularly special to her. She also loved music, which includes piano, organ, and accordion playing, and also singing and dancing. She was an avid Bingo player as well.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband John; her daughters, Candy (James) Kwak of Perronville and Kimberly (Thomas) Nelson, Angela McCormick and Christina McCormick of Sault Ste. Marie; two sisters, Johnlon Fegan and Priscilla (John) DeLude, both of Texas; a brother, Mark Crook of Stephenson; and her dear grandchildren, Amber, Brandon, Heather, Andrew, Taylor, Andreaka, Brendon and Kimberly.
Visitation will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Monday from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Services will also be held on Monday at 7:30 p.m. with Pastor Bill Lockhart officiating. Following the service there will be a gathering at the Ramada Plaza Ojibway with coffee and donuts. Everyone is welcome to attend. Interment will take place at Hillcrest cemetery on a later date. Memorials may be left to the Fundamental Baptist Church or the charity of one's choice.

POTTER, GEORGE A., 85, of Pickford passed away Saturday afternoon, October 4, 2003 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. He was born September 9, 1918. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Reamer Funeral Home of Pickford.
Myrtle Tuori
Myrtle V. Tuori 91, of Dafter passed away September 21, 2002 at Darvin Heartland Health Care Center, in Livonia, Michigan. She was born August 5, 1911 in Sinai, South Dakota.
Myrtle is survived by her brother Aldon (Alva) Holk of Northville, Michigan, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Elmer Tuori on September 13, 1983. Also preceding Myrtle in death are her sisters Pearl Nesseth, Hazel Halliwell, and her twin sister Lillian Fick; and her brothers Howard, Paul, and Carlisle.
Myrtle's parents Paul and Victoria Holk, brought their family to Detroit in 1923. Later, in 1930, Myrtle graduated from Thomas M. Cooley in 1930. A year earlier she was Captain of the softball which took the all city championship for Detroit. Myrtle loved to watch sports, garden, and fish.
Services will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Friday September 27, 2002, at 11:00 A.M. officiating will be Reverend Frederick R. Gross, pastor of St. Peter's German Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Pine Grove cemetery. Memorials may be left to Hospice of Chippewa County.
Stuart Brooks
Stuart Gale Brooks died on August 20, 2002 in an airplane crash in Norris Lake, Tennessee. Born in Atlanta, Michigan to Ruben and Mabel Brooks on May 5, 1941, he graduated from Rudyard High School in Rudyard, Michigan in 1960. After graduating he served in the United States Coast Guard for four years. Stuart worked as a trim carpenter in Lansing, Michigan and surrounding area for some years; then worked as a corporate pilot and timber buyer for Devereaux Sawmill in Pewamo, Michigan. For the last few years he resided in Seneca, South Carolina, where he owned and operated a specialty timber brokerage firm.
He is survived by sons Gregg Brooks of Portland, Michigan, and Scott (Patti) Brooks of Zeeland, Michigan; daughters Michelle (Jim) Gustafson of Dewitt, Michigan and Barbara Bendt of Dewitt, Michigan; five granddaughters, two grandsons, wife Karen of South Carolina; three step-daughters and one stepson; brothers Alden Brooks of Golden Valley, Arizona; and Lee (Vonda) Brooks of Atlanta, Michigan; sisters Faye (Arvie) Stevens of Dade City, Florida; Gwen (Gene) Akers of Hudson, Florida; Silva (Harlan) Freeman of Rudyard, Michigan; and June (Glen) Finch of Kinross, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister Marilyn.
Cremation took place and interment was in Seneca, South Carolina.
John Kowalczak
John F. Kowalczak, 89, of Greenhills Estates in Zephyrhills, Florida, passed away September 4, 2002, at Hospice Care Center in Date City.
He was born May 25, 1913, in Goetzville, Michigan. For over 30 years, he was a Tool and Die operator, at Everlock Detroit Inc. He retired in 1978. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was also able to repair or make items from shoes to parts for old machines.
In 1942 he married
Wanda Szczawinski, she preceded him in death in 1977.
Surviving is his wife of 25 years, Lucille (Castagne) Kowalczak of Zephyrhills, Florida. His son, John (Barbra) Kowalczak of Lincoln Park, Michigan; a daughter, Darlen (Don) Babin of Allen Park, Michigan; five step-children, Don (Karen) Benoit of Lansing, Michigan; Marshall (Maryann) Benoit; Marsha Rosenquist; Janet (Richard) Sanderson; all of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; and Janice (Tim) Curtis of Pickford, Michigan. He leaves two grandchildren, Donald J. Babin of Novi and Deborah (Robert) Mahias of Allen Park, Michigan; 10 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Three sisters, Julianna Krysick and Caroline (Joseph) Soczek of Goetzville, Michigan and Irene Zebega of Allan Park, Michigan.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Kowalczak, a brother Joseph, and two sisters, Leona McSheffery and Kate Desormeaux.
A funeral mass was held on September 9, 2002 at St. Joseph's church in Zephyrhills, Florida, with Father John Hayes officiating. A memorial service will be held at Holy Family Church in Barbeau, Michigan at 11:00 a.m. with Father Don Shiroda officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Church Building Fund for the Handicapped in Barbeau or the Hernando-Pasco Hospice Care Center in Date City, Florida.
Cremation took place, and interment was in Allen Park, Michigan. Coleman-Ferguson Funeral Chapels in Zephyrhills, Florida was in charge of the arrangements.

A memorial service for John Kowalczak will be held at Holy Family Church in Barbeau, Michigan on Saturday, September 28, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Don Shiroda officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Family Church Building Fund for the Handicapped in Barbeau or the Hernando-Pasco Hospice Care Center in Date City, Florida. Cremation took place, and interment was in Allen Park, Michigan.

COLEMAN, CARL, 79, of Kinross died Friday September 20, 2002 at his home. Coleman was born May 9, 1923 in Sault Ste. Marie. Arrangements will be announced later by the Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home.
Hugh Ferns
Hugh C. Ferns passed away on November 28, 2002. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 28, 1919. He graduated from St. Paul High School in Grosse Pointe. He entered the Army in 1941 and served in the European Theater during World War II. He married
Barbara A. Tillmanns on September 25, 1946. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and served 4 years in Germany. In 1957 he was stationed at the Radar Base in Sault Ste. Marie. During this time he had tours of duty in Vietnam and in Panama.
He was the first military man to serve as Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was also District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus. He served as president of St. Joseph's and Loretto High School's PTA. He was active in the community, serving on the Red Cross Board, Community Action, and United Way boards. He was involved with the EDC, Cub Scouts, and the USO. He was a Veteran's Outreach worker for the unemployment office. He was active in the Disabled American Veterans and served as State Commander. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara A. Ferns, and their five children. He has two sons, William (Maryann) Ferns of Marquette, and Gary (Debbie) Ferns of Tucson, Arizona. He has three daughters, Carol (Skip) Bregand of Farmington Hills, Julie (Dean) Bennette of Sault Ste. Marie, and Mary (Thomas) Armstrong of Sault Ste. Marie. He has 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents Annie and Edward Ferns, his guardian Ida Vogt, and his twin brother, Edward Ferns.
His family loved him very much and will truly miss him.
Visitation hours are Sunday, December 1, 2002 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a D.A.V. Memorial Service at 7:15 p.m., a Knights of Columbus Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m., a VFW Memorial Service at 7:45 p.m., and prayers at 8:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass is Monday, December 2, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral Church with Father Ted Brodeur and Father Sebastian Kavumkal officiating.
Burial will follow at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens cemetery.

Bernard Geniesse
Bernard L. Geniesse, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on Friday, November 29, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. He was born on October 18, 1927 in Menominee, and was a member of the EUP Antique Equipment Association and the Moose Lodge #999. He was also a member of the Buckley Old Engine Club.
Bernard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Catherine (Borst) Geniesse; five children, Bernard (Jane) Geniesse, Jr. of Jackson; David (Rayette) Geniesse of Jackson; Michael (Sondro) Geniesse of TeriCeia Island, Florida; Susanne Smith of Seffner, Florida; and Robert (Katherine) Geniesse of Brandon, Florida; two sisters, Theresa Lippens of Rock, and Doris VanDamme of Escanaba; four brothers, John Geniesse of Menominee; Kenneth Geniesse of Sussix, Wisconsin; Gerard Geniesse of Buffalo Grove, Illinois; and Anthony Geniesse of El Paso, Texas; seven grandchildren, Shawn Geniesse; Jason Geniesse; Megan Geniesse; Catherine Geniesse; Seth Geniesse; Laura Geniesse; and Audra Geniesse; and a great-granddaughter, Mikayla.
He is predeceased by his parents, John and Celina Geniesse; a son, Francis Geniesse; two sisters, Bernice and Anna; and a brother, Raymond.
Memorial services are being planned for the spring of 2003.
Final resting place will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.

Lucille Nertoli
Lucille M. Nertoli, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2002 at her daughter's home. She was born on September 2, 1917, on Sugar Island, Michigan. She was a member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians; Tribal Elder Committee, having served as its chairperson; Associate Tribal registrar for many years; and was one of the Tribal Elders that helped reorganize the original Bands of Chippewa Indians, which was later Federally recognized as the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Also had been the head cook at the Community Action Agency for many years. Member of the D.A.V. Auxiliary.
She is survived by one son, Tony Nertoli of Sault Ste. Marie; two daughters, Jolene Nertoli of Sault Ste. Marie, and Cathy Nertoli of Sault Ste. Marie; eleven grandchildren, Michael Pine, Rebecca Nertoli, Angela Dangler, Philip P. Nertoli, Jr., Tony Nertoli, Debra Ann Pine Hall, Steven Pine, Mariea Pine, Priscilla Pine, Luci DeVoy, and Rita DeVoy; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husband Germano (Joe) Nertoli in 1969; parents, Louis and Josephine (LaCoy) Hatch; daughter, Barbara Ann Pine, 1999; son, Philip P. Nertoli in 2002; son-in-law Ed Pine; and three sisters, Rita Bouschor, Nina McCoy, and Jane Hatch.
Visitation will be at 6:00 p.m. Saturday until 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at 1702 E. 7th Street off Marquette. Parish prayers will be on Monday at 8:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday from 10 until 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral Church.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at St. Mary's ProCathedral Church. Clergy will be Father Ted Brodeur and Father John Hascall.
Final resting place will be at Donaldson Catholic cemetery.
