MERLE JOHNSON
Merle Eugene Johnson, 67, of M-129 Cedarville, Michigan passed away at his home at 1 p.m. on February 4, 2002.
He was born in Nashville, Michigan on December 17, 1934. He worked for the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island and retired in 1982 from U.S. Steel Corporation where he worked in the boat-loading department for 18 years. He served in the U.S. Navy, was a very avid bowler and loved to hunt and fish.
Merle is survived by his beloved wife, Yvonne J. (Gugin) whom he married
on November 3, 1965 in Cedarville; one sister, Arloa Malkowski of Cedarville; one brother, Marshall (Lucille) Johnson of Cedarville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Gertrude Johnson Parker; and a brother-in-law, Anthony Malkowski.
At his request, no services will be held. Interment will be in Cedar cemetery in the spring.

Hazel Frazier
Hazel L. Campbell Frazier, 88, of St. Ignace died at 8:45 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2002 at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care following a lingering illness.
She was born in Superior Township, Chippewa County near Strongs on October 13, 1913 to Ray Delmar and Phoebe Alice (Jones) Walker.
Hazel grew up in Strongs and at age 15 the family moved to St. Ignace (1929), where her father became a conservation officer for the State of Michigan. Hazel spent her time after her marriage to James Arthur Campbell on Oct. 2, 1933, raising her family. She worked side by side with her husband in the commercial fishing business, and for many years operating the Sunset Ridge Trailer Court in St. Ignace. She later worked for Winkleman's Store, and Medical Sewn Products. She then became a teacher's aide and worked for 10 years in the St. Ignace School System, retiring in the 1980s. She is a member of Zion Lutheran Church in St. Ignace and a past member of the Moose Lodge.
She liked to hunt, fish and had a passion for reading, and a talent for poetry she inherited from her mother, as her other siblings also did. She loved to sing, and brightened the day of the Long Term Care Facility with her renditions of old songs.
Her first husband James, died on June 5, 1972. In 1979 she married
Frederick Frazier, and he died in 1993.
She is survived by her family, son, James R. and his wife, Shirley, Carp River; Sandra K. Litzner, Moran; brothers Dell and Daisy Walker and Ray E. and Marvel Walker, Evergreen Shores; sisters, Esther and Kenneth DesJardins, Detroit; Marie Smith, Detroit; grandchildren, Robert J. Campbell, Kim Marie DiLoreto, Michael W. Campbell, William J. Campbell, Steven A. Campbell, Candace S. Campeau, Daniel J. Litzner, and Jonathan D. Litzner; great grandchildren, Casey Campbell, Terri Campbell, Samuel DiLoreto, Jackson Campbell, James Campbell, Joseph Campbell, Jennifer Campbell, Ashley Campbell, Amber Campbell, and Brianna Campeau.
She was preceded in death by four children, Alice Marie, Patricia Ann, William D. and Lee Ann. She and her husband Jim also raised three foster children during the 1960s.
Her stepchildren are Joseph Frazier, William (Chum) Frazier, May Wiertalla, Joan Herman, Mary Streichtert and Ann Haske, and many step-children and great grand-children.
Friends may call at Zion Lutheran Church in St. Ignace on Monday from 9- 11 a.m. Service will be at 11 a.m. with pastor Tarri Stage-Harvey officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery, beside her husband James A. Campbell.
Memorials may be made to the Piano Fund for the Long Term Care Facility with envelopes available from Dodson Funeral Home, St. Ignace who handled arrangements.
Donna McGuire
Donna D. McGuire, 73, of Ontario Street in DeTour Village passed away unexpectedly at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 21, 2002 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.
Donna was born in Berkley on October 29, 1928 and lived in DeTour Village most of her life. She worked for the DeTour Post Office as a postal clerk for 30 years, retiring in 1983. Donna loved spending time with her family and enjoyed gardening, fishing, sewing, following Detroit Red Wings hockey and visiting the casino with her special niece, Janice Newell.
Donna is survived by two sons, Gregory W. (Marilyn) McGuire of DeTour Village and William V. (Gail) McGuire of Redford; a daughter, April (Charles) Beer of Clinton Township; four granddaughters, Dawnalyn (J.T.) Turnbow, Dana McGuire, Allison (Patrick) Carpenter and Lindsey McGuire; a grandson, Patrick McGuire; and two sisters, Billie (Gerald) Munro of DeTour Village and Christina Pappert of Sault Ste. Marie.
Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon P. McGuire on Nov. 25, 1996; two sons, Shannon in 1970 and Shawn in 1995; a sister, Beverly Tinkis and her parents, Grig and Margaret Tinkis.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the DeTour Union Presbyterian Church. Friends may call at the church from 12 noon until the time of services. Burial will follow in the Maple Grove cemetery in DeTour Township. Memorials may be left to the DeTour Village Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Georgia Shimp
Georgia Lucille Shimp, age 91, of DeTour Village passed away at 12:00 a.m. on Monday morning, September 16, at War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Facility in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Georgia was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on October 8, 1910 and spent her early years there. In 1933, she graduated from the old School for the Deaf High School on East Town Street in Columbus, Ohio. She met her husband-to-be, Isaac, while attending the School for the Deaf.
Early in her life, as a photographer/artist, she was a color-tinting specialist, converting black and white prints to color.
She retired in 1970 from Willy's Overland where she was employed for 18 years in the assembly division. She moved to DeTour in 1973 from Toledo, Ohio and for the past 8 years was a resident of War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She enjoyed crocheting and painting in both watercolors and oils.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Olive (Albert "Jerry") Warner of M-134, DeTour Village, Michigan; 6 grandchildren, Brian and Scott Moyer, and Janet, Mike, Steve, and Larry Warner; nine great-grandchildren, Matthew, Michelle, and Ethan Syria and Michelle, Cassaundra, Anthony, Jillian, Jacob, and Sophia Warner; one sister, Maxine Conover of Middletown, Ohio; and her nieces and nephews, Robert and Ellen Sue Conover, Beverly Woods, and Robert Shimp.
Georgia was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Shimp in 1955; a daughter, Roberta LaCealie Moyer in 1991; two brothers, Earl and Albert Wamsley and her parents, Robert and Maude Wamsley.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at the Reamer Funeral Home in Pickford, Michigan with Deacon Charles Krahnke officiating. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Memorials may be left to War Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Robert Johnston
Robert W. Johnston, 69, of St.Ignace, died Sunday evening, September 15, 2002 at Mackinac Straits Hospital E.R. He was born April 2, 1933 in Hessel. His parents were Elmer and Madeline (Wisner) Johnston. He attended school in the Carp River area and 3rd Ward. He served from 1951 to 1955 in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War. He retired from Detroit Crane as a bulldozer and crane operator, and was a member of Operating Engineers Local #324. He is a member of the Moose Lodge #999, St. Ignace. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He is a life member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
He married
Sandra Wartella on June 28, 1958 at the Lutheran Church in St. Ignace, and Sandy died February 13, 2002. He is survived by his family, sons, Troy (Lori) Johnston of St. Ignace; Todd (Sherrie) Johnston of LaGrange, Indiana; daughters, Toni Kaye Johnston and Tami Jo Johnston, both of St. Ignace; brothers, Don of Carp River; and Wayne (Dixie) of Delton; sisters, Donna (Claude) Daniels of Cedarville; Maxine and the late Orrie Taylor of Carp River; Shirley (Jim) Campbell of Carp River; Ruth (Dave) LaJoice of Escanaba; and Karen (Louie) Tremblay of Pine River; grandchildren, Sara, Jonathan, Chelsea, Brooke, Anthony, Mallory, and Lydia; and great-grandchildren, Cooper and Saylor Sandra; also his mother-in-law, Verena Wartella of Allenville.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in St. Ignace with Pastor Tari Stage-Harvey officiating. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 on Thursday. Cremation has taken place, and his ashes will be buried in Allenville cemetery next to his wife, Sandy.

EAGLE, GRACE MARION
EAGLE, GRACE MARION, age 93, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2002 at Tendercare Nursing Home. Arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.
Nadine Cochrane Luc
A memorial service for Nadine Cochrane Luc, who died July 17, 2002, at Fort Walton Beach in Shalimar, Florida, will be held on Saturday, September 21 at 9:30 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 533 Bingham Avenue. She was born on july 26, 1922, to the late Mr. and Mrs. William S. Cochrane in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Mrs. Luc was predeceased by her husband John T. Luc; and a sister, Wilda (Mrs. Walter) M. Cameron. She is survived by one daughter, Sheryl Rose Gadbury of Bement, Illinois; three step-sons, John Luc, Jr. of Floral City, Florida; Fred Luc of Baltimore, Maryland; and David Luc of Centereach, Long Island; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Konny Fisher of Duvall, Washington and Jean Leaming and brother-in-law John Leaming, both of Essexville, Michigan. Several cousins, as well as nieces and nephews of Michigan and Ontario, Canada, also survive.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. James' Endowment Fund. Burial is at Pinegrove cemetery.
Charlotte Worden
Charlotte Louise Wordon, of Cedarville, Mich. formerly of Davison, age 58, passed away Monday, November 18, 2002 at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba, Mich.
Charlotte was born in Flint, Mich. on May 18, 1944, the daughter of Herman and Ona Weidenhammer. She married
Harold Wordon on June 23, 1962. She resided in Cedarville most recently, and was a former Davison area resident. Charlotte loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. She also liked doing crafts and sewing.
Charlotte is survived by her husband, Harold Worden I; son, Harold II (Suzanne) Worden; daughter, Trina Worden; grandchildren, Harold III and Haley; eight siblings, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings.
Charlotte will lie in state at the Allen Funeral home, 9136 E. Davison Rd., Davison, Mich. where the family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 25, at the funeral home with Reverend Floyd Wehner officiating. Burial will take place in Crestwood cemetery.
Ronnie Thurston
Ronnie Thurston, age 43, of Florence, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2002 at St. Luke Hospital in Florence, Ky.
Ronnie was a former manager at Deter's Co.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Thurston, of Florence, Ky.; mother, Donna Bergfalk of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; daughter, Stephanie Thurston of Florence, Ky.; son, Michael Thurston of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; three sisters: Lavonda Larue, Shelia St. Onge, and Rosalyn Thurston -- all of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; four brothers: Richard Thurston, John Thurston, Gary Thurston, and Mike Thurston -- all of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; step-father, Russell Bergfalk of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; and father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Diana McPherson of Florence, Ky.
Visitation will be held at Stith Funeral Home, Inc., 7500 Highway 42, Florence, Kentucky on Monday, November 25, from 1-3 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 3 p.m. Monday. Burial will take place at Burlington cemetery in Burlington, Ky.

Earl Gady
Earl F. Gady passed away at War Memorial Hospital on Friday, November 22, 2002.
He was a lifelong resident of the Sault, born on March 19, 1925. Earl was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and the American Legion. Mr. Gady worked at the U.S. Corps of Engineers for over 30 years, retiring in 1986.
Earl Gady is survived by his wife Elaine, three sons: Richard (Andrea) Gady of Rochester Hills, Mich., Ralph (Debra) Gady of Grandville, Mich., and Ronald (Kelly) Gady of Seymour, Wisc.; two daughters: Bonnie Laney of East Lansing, Mich. and Gail Gady of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.; and two brothers: Roy (Shirley) Gady of Alpena, Mich. and Wayne (Muriel) Gady of Brimley, Mich.
Earl is preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Darr and Ruth Lihou.
Visitation will be held for Mr. Gady at Hovie Funeral Home on Sunday, November 24 from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will also be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church from 12-1 p.m. on Monday, November 25 with funeral services at 1 p.m. at the church. Interment will take place at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.
Memorials may be left to Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church or Bay Cliff Health Camp.
Dorothy Rodgers
Dorothy Ann Rodgers, age 84, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2002 at home.
Mrs. Rodgers was born on January 28, 1918 in Port Austin, Mich. She married
Jack D. Rodgers and traveled throughout the United States as a military wife before moving to Sault Ste. Marie after her husband's retirement in 1964. She returned to school and eventually earned her Bachelor's Degree in Registered Nursing from Lake Superior State University.
Mrs. Rodgers worked for more than 25 years at War Memorial Hospital, where she was loved and respected. She was an avid bowler and an accomplished seamstress and needle crafter. Mrs. Rodgers also loved to read, and instilled the same love in her children and grandson. She enjoyed gardening and was especially proud of her roses.
Mrs. Rodgers is survived by her son, Jack Rodgers; her daughter, Kelly DeBono; her grandson, Matthew DeBono; and a sister, Doris McGuire.
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. on Monday, November 25 at the Hovie Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home, with Father Don Shiroda officiating. Interment will be at the Port Austin Township cemetery in Port Austin, Mich. The family suggests donations to Hospice of Chippewa County.
Robert Snell
Robert Watson Snell, 84 of Drummond Island and formerly of Beulah, Mich. died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born Sept. 24, 1918 in Montreal, Que., the son of William and Nora (Hadfield) Snell.
Robert was a lifelong sales and businessman, working for Continental Baking Co. in Detroit as plant manager until 1960, when he moved to Beulah and started Bob Snell's Hardware, which is now Nugent Ace Hardware in Beulah. He retired in 1971; currently the store is in its third generation of family ownership, being owned by his granddaughters.
After retirement, Robert and his wife, Jean moved to Drummond Island, where they have lived for 30 years.
Robert attended the Drummond Island Lutheran Church and when he lived in Beulah, was a member of the Beulah Chamber of Commerce. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed boating, sailing, playing golf and woodworking. He was a devoted family man who was always willing to help others in their time of need.
On Feb. 1, 1942 in Port Huron, Robert married
Margaret Jean McDonald, who survives him. He is also survived by a son, Roderick (Lynn) Snell of Baton Rouge, La.; two daughters: Linda (Neil) Nugent of Beulah and Donna (George) Vander Hoff of Interlochen; seven grandchildren: Andy Nugent; Betsy Evans; Rob Nugent; Julie Bretzke; Rod Snell; Kate Brown and Sarah Vander Hoff; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, William (Judy) Snell of Clinton Township and several nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Malcolm Snell and Donald Snell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, 2002 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Beulah with Rev. Thom Nelson officiating. Visitation will be held Monday from 1 p.m. until time of services at the church in Beulah. Interment will be in Drummond Island cemetery on Drummond Island at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to a charity of one's choice.

LEACH, JOHN "JACK" H., age 70, of Traverse City, Mich. entered eternal peace with his Lord on Thursday evening, November 21, 2002 at the Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Mich.
