PETERS, WALTER C. JR. Age 83 of Flint, died at his residence on Wednesday, February 2, 2000. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2000 at the Brown Funeral Home 1616 Davison Rd., Flint, with Rev. Harold K. Polk Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Flint Memorial Park. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday and 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Peters was born on April 12, 1916 in Champagne, IL. He had resided in the Flint area for about 20 years, coming from the Detroit area. He was united in marriage to June Wolf on June 6, 1936. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II he worked for the U.S. Postal Railroad Service for 30 years, retiring in 1971. Mr. Peters was a member of FOP Lodge #126. SHIRLEY, IRVING E. Born July 22, 1900, Summer Shade, Kentucky. He moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he met and married Daisy Bell. They eventually moved to Detroit, joining Ebenezer A.M.E. Church in 1940 where he served on the Board of Stewards. In May, 1954, he and his wife joined forces with nineteen other "Pathfinders" to establish People's Community Church under the leadership of the Reverend Carlyle Fielding Stewart. He served his church faithfully for forty-five years, first as Chairman of the "Pathfinders, " and then as the first Chairman of the Board of Stewards. He served the African-American community for some forty-seven years as an insurance agent, mostly with Mammoth Life. He loved his work, was devoted to his clients, and retired, reluctantly, at ninety years of age. He departed this life January 29, 2000 at age 99. His long and rewarding life included sixty-five years of marriage to his beloved wife, who preceded him in death. He leaves to celebrate his memory; his son and daughter-in-law, George and Gladys Shirley; two grandchildren, Ms. Olwyn Shirley and Mr. Lyle Shirley; two great-granddaughters, Amber and Christina Moses; a host of loving nieces, nephews and other relatives, and friends beyond number.
