Originally from Concord, Michigan, Mrs. Hayskar moved to this area in 1972 from Plymouth, MI. She was a graduate of Albion College in Albion, MI and taught History and English for 35 years. Mrs. Hayskar taught 8th grade at Plymouth Jr. High School in Plymouth, MI. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Port St. Lucie. She is survived by her son, Stephen G. HIEMENZ, JOHN (JACK) SR. Age 86, of Alma, passed away Sunday, May 24, 1998 at home in Alma. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary s Catholic Church in Alma with Father David Parsch officiating. Interment will be in Riverside cemetery in Alma. Visitation will be at the Dewey Funeral Home, in Alma from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday. A scripture service will be held at 8:30 p.m. at the Dewey Funeral Home on Tuesday. Mr Hiemenz was born February 23, 1912 in Buffalo, New York, the son of John J. and Louise (Bittner) Hiemenz. He married Mary Barrows in 1939, who preceded him in death in 1971. In 1972 Mr. Hiemenz married Viola Gillespie, of Midland, MI. John graduated from Manhattan College in New York City in 1934. During his collegiate years, he played varsity football for Manhattan and as a sophomore, participated in the first Orange Bowl game against the Univ. of Miami. In 1982 John attended the Orange Bowl s 50th. Anniversary. During the half time ceremonies they honored those who participated in the inaugural game. Upon graduation from Manhattan, John worked for Bethlehem Steel Company in Buffalo, New York. While working for Bethlehem during the week, his football career continued as he played professionally for the Canadian Football League on weekends. In 1942, John was hired by Lobdell Emery as a financial consultant and in 1943 joined the company as a direct employee. John was appointed to Exec. Vice Pres. in 1945 and promoted to President in 1952. In 1974, John became the Chairman of the Board. Under John s leadership, the company prospered as the Alma plant expanded in size and employment plus four additional plants were built in Indiana. He remained active in the role until the sale of the company in 1997. In addition to his distinguished 55 year career at Lobdell Emery, John served on the board of directors of Michigan National Bank, Commercial National Bank, Valley National Bank, Michigan Mutual and Alma College. Additionally, he was a member of the Saginaw Club, Pine River Country Club, Vero Beach Country Club, and the Alma Elks Lodge. John is survived by his wife, Viola, one daughter Mary Jack (Don) Wheeler of Rochester, NY, ; two sons, John F. (Joann) Hiemenz, Jr. of Midland, James J. (Susan) Hiemenz of Baton Rouge, LA, ; one stepson Glen (Carol) Gillespie of Midland; three step daughters, Carolyn Smith of Tennessee, Virginia (Mike) Clarey of S. Carolina, Janice (Jim) Kubczak of Saginaw; 11 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, and one brother, Paul (Betty) Hiemenz; one nephew and two nieces of Ocala, FL. John was preceded in death by a sister, Bernadine Lobmiller in 1980 In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the St. Mary s School Endowment Fund or the charity of your choice. MECHIGIAN, GARBIS PENIAMIN age 97, of Saline formerly Oak Park . Our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, at age 97, died Sunday morning, May 24, 1998 at the Evangelical Home-Saline. He was born on March 20, 1901 in Erzinga, Armenia and grew up in Istanbul, Turkey. A survivor of the Armenian genocide of 1915. He immigrated to the United States in 1920. After teaching himself English, his fourth language, he attended the University of Michigan, College of Engineering, and obtained a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in three years. He then worked for the Detroit Gas Company for 12 years. When his brother Aram died tragically in an automobile accident, he joined his youngest brother Sharam in the family business, A.G.S. Leather Company, where he worked until he was 77 years old. He was preceded in death by his first wife Arpie Teshcoian Mechigian in 1934 and his second wife Armen Tosoonian Mechigian in 1987 and his brother Sharam Mechigian in 1996. Survivors include his children: Garbis P. Mechigian Jr., and Iris Mechigian Gruhl and their spouses; his grandchildren: Deborah A. Mechigian, Gregory P. Mechigian, Garbis P. Mechigian III, Timothy Mechigian Gruhl and Kenneth Mechigian Gruhl; 4 great grandchildren (the youngest of whom was born on the day he died); a niece, two nephews, several cousins and their families.
