KUSCHELL, RICHARD P., SR. 79, of Empire, formerly of Detroit, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born August 22, 1920 in Benton Harbor, the son of Paul August and Ona J. (Burrows) Kuschell. A veteran of WWII, Mr. Kuschell served in the U.S. Army in India. An attorney who specialized in real estate, Mr. Kuschell was a 50 year member of the State Bar. An innovator in real estate development, Mr. Kuschell pioneered the all electric home in the 1950 s in conjunction with Detroit Edison. He was an early leader in rehabilitating medium rise and high rise buildings and converting commercial high rise space to residential space. Later he concentrated in rehabilitation of distressed single family homes, providing purchasers with innovative financing. He was a master of fox hounds at Bloomfield Open Hunt Club while living in the Detroit area. Survivors include his wife, the former Betty M. Harbaugh, whom he married April 22, 1939 in Wauseon, Ohio; children, Susan Hamilton of San Antonio, Texas, Richard P. (Susan) Kuschell, Jr. of Traverse City, Heidi (Paul) Skinner of Interlochen and Nancy Davidson of Hudson, Florida; 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Joseph, who died in 1971. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St., Traverse City on Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Entombment will take place at White Chapel Memorial Park in Troy with family services being held at that time.
