SAILE, FRANK J. "Bud", Jr. Of Maple City, formerly of Detroit and Grosse Pointe Farms, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born January 12, 1918 in Columbus, Ohio to Frank and Rose (Decker) Saile, Sr. He married Lorraine A. Weber on August 5, 1940 in Detroit. Bud was president of Wayne Tool and Die and Cadillac Division in Detroit. He raced unlimited hydroplanes from 1955-1969 capturing many gold trophies with his boats, Miss Wayne and Miss Cadillac. Bud was a member of Maple City Lions Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer and loved to play cards and chess. Survivors include his former wife and life long companion, Lorraine A. (Weber) Saile, his four children, Frank J. "Skip" (Liz) Saile III of Cedar, MI; Sharlynn L. Winter of Evanston, IL, Wayne T. (Carolle) Saile of Rogers City; Laurlynn "Cookie" (Gregory) Shugart of Traverse City, 15 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two sisters Dorothy Fletcher and Rosemary LesPerance. The Family will greet friends on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City with a brief eulogy being delivered at 8 p.m. by the Rev. ATWELL, ARTHUR, Ann Arbor, Mi. Age 93, passed away Sunday March 14, 1999. He died peacefully while at rest. At the time he was living at Kerrington House in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Art was born December 30, 1905 in London, England. He moved with his parents to Canada in 1906. They lived for a time in Quebec. Later the family moved to Cobalt, Ontario, where his father worked in the local mines. Art was the second of four children. Art lived an idyllic life as a young boy. He used a log cabin on Giroux Lake that was built by a French-Canadian hermit. In the winter he kept trap lines. In the summer he spent time fishing and visiting with the local Indians. Art s father was gassed in W.W.I and spent less and less time in the mines. He opened a combination pool hall, barber shop and saloon. Art became an excellent pool player. Art, his older brother Ed, and a lifelong friend Jack Mcleod emigrated to Detroit when Art was 17. Art worked at Hudson Motor and several other companies. He met his wife Ruth and they were married in 1928. She predeceased him in January of this year. In 1940 Art was offered the plant managers job at U.S. Broach Company. He managed the firm throughout W.W. II. In 1950 the owner sold th company to Art and several partners. In 1967 they sold the company and Art retired. In retirement he converted his extraordinary talents with metal to those of woodworking. He loved crusing in a series of boats and he relished the chance to enter a Gin Rummy tournament. Art is survived by his sons Albert of CA. and Arthur of ID. Grandchildren include Cynthia Atwell Sink Seattle, Elizabeth Atwell in Santa Ana, Greg Atwell in Brentwood, Michael Atwell in Ann Arbor, Anne Atwell Brownback in Virginia, Amy Atwell Stroud in Ann Arbor. Great grandchildren include Hannah Sink, Matthew Sink, Evan Atwell, Miles Atwell, Adam Brownback, Drue Brownback, Ian Stroud. His two brothers and one sister predeceased Art. CHOWINSKI, JULIA R. Julia Chowinski, 78, passed away on March 16, 1999 at Hospice Home, Farmington Hills, MI, after a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Chowinski owned and operated a grocery and meat market in River Rouge with her husband Joseph (Whitey) who passed away in 1996. The combination store with attached home was purchased in 1930 and originally operated by Mrs. Chowinski s parents. Julia first started working in the store at the age of 13. Her father had to go to work in a factory, and when her mother broke her arm, she taught Julia how to cut meat and help run the store. Even after the store was closed in 1981, Mrs. Chowinski continued to reside at the same address in River Rouge until 1997 when she moved to Riverview Co-op Apartments. "My mother sold groceries and meats for many years and taught many new brides in the neighborhood how to cook. They would buy meat and groceries and she would give them instructions on how to cook it. Because she was a wonderful cook herself, if they followed her instructions, they would usually come into the store the next day and tell her that their meal was delicious, " said her daughter, Christine Piche. In addition to her daughter, Christine, she is survived by her son-in-law Michael Piche, sister Leona Gierczak, nephew Michael Gier and niece Anita (Louis) Miller. She was pre-deceased by her sister Esther Pinto. Visitation at Girrbach-Krasun Funeral Home, (River Rouge Chapel), 10783 W. Jefferson, Thursday 2-9 p.m. Rosary 7 p.m. Funeral Friday 9:15 a.m. to St. John Cantius, 10 a.m. Mass. Interment Michigan Memorial Park.

Sister of Angelika Backhausen. survived by ten grandchildren and three great-grand- children.
