Emma M. Patranc, 77

Emma M. Patranc, 77, of Allegan passed away Saturday, April 15, 2006, at the Allegan Medical Care Facility. Emma was born Dec. 10, 1928, in Chicago to William and Emma (Mohr) Winter.

On Oct. 1, 1949, she married Theodore "Ted" Patranc who preceded her in 1984.

Emma enjoyed crocheting, reading and was a big sports fan. She was member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hopkins. Emma worked as a registered nurse and retired from Eckrich.

Surviving are a son, Craig (Patricia) Patranc of Solon, Ohio; a daughter, Wendy (Frank) Kelly of Allegan; six grandchildren, Sara Crum, Serenity Scott, Adam Kelly, Alissa Williams, Harmony Kelly and Destiny Kelly; six great-grandchildren, Quintin Lunsford, Victoria Crum, Timothy Williams, Cymbre, Eli and Allegra Scott; one brother, Harold (Ina) Winter; a sister, Janice (Ernest) Cochran of Allegan; an aunt, Frieda Crabbe; an uncle, Jack Mohr; a sister-in-law, Pat Lopez; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hopkins with Pastor Don Seelhoff officiating.

Contributions in memory of Emma may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Winkel Funeral Home is serving the family.

Tedd Froelich, 53

Tedd Froelich, 53, of Plainwell passed away April 12, 2006, at home from malignant melanoma. He was born Nov. 11, 1952, in Detroit and moved to Plainwell with his family in 1965. Tedd was employed by the Allegan County Sheriff's Department as a Transportation/Classification Deputy. He enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, playing poker, motorcycling and working on cars.

In January of 1978 he married Star Warning, who survives along with their children, Michelle and Scott.

Also surviving are his parents, Adelbert and Corrine of Plainwell; his brothers, Rick (Deb) and Dan (Linda) both of Otsego, and Jim (Diane) of Galesburg; several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles; and a lot of wonderful friends.

Family and friends shared memories and celebrate Tedd's life Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where funeral services were Saturday with the Rev. Timothy M. Foreman officiating and Nyla Merrill giving the eulogy. Burial followed at Mountain Home cemetery, Otsego.

Benjamin Howard, 84

Benjamin Howard, 84, of Plainwell died on April 13, 2006 at Kairos Dwelling. He was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Valleyview, Ky., to Ellard and Florence (Benton) Howard.

Ben grew up in Kentucky until entering the Army to serve during World War II. Following his discharge he moved to Kalamazoo, where his new bride Dorothy Goodhart lived, whom he married on April 1, 1943.

For 40 years Ben worked as a machine tender for Allied Paper, until his retirement. Ben and Dorothy moved to Plainwell over 50 years ago.

Ben's family includes his wife Dorothy; children, Sandra and Dale Morse of Otsego, Gwen and Tom Chapman of Plainwell, Dave and Sheila Howard of Plainwell and Ken Howard of Cass City; grandchildren, Jeff Chapman, Wendy and Brian Bidwell, Dan Chapman, Joe and Kim Chapman, Mark and Rochelle Howard, Brad Howard, Tamara and Peter Koppers, Mike Morse, and Scott and Telesha Morse; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Ethan, Sarah, Emma, Meghan, Brenton, Kaitlynn, Kayla, Kyle and Taylor; siblings, Nelson and Mildred Howard and Christine Buckley, all of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Hazel and Edna.

Friends visited with Ben's family and viewed his Life Story Film on Friday at the Life Story Funeral Home, RDMG, 120 S. Woodhams, Plainwell, where his service was Saturday.

Stacey A. Schmitt, 29

Stacey A. Schmitt, 29, of Plainwell passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006, in Kalamazoo. Stacey was born Oct. 14, 1976, in Allegan to Anthony and Denise Anne (Wallace) Schmitt.

She loved spending time with her daughter Morgan and with her family and friends. Some of her favorite activities were going to the beach, snowboarding and watching movies.

Surviving are her daughter, Morgan Anne; her mother and stepfather, Annie and Buddy Koehrn of Plainwell; her father, Tony (Deb Bodine) Schmitt of Delton; three brothers, Shane (Becky) Schmitt, Bryon (LaRayne) Schmitt and Patrick Schmitt, all of Otsego; one niece, Alexis Schmitt; her grandfather, Earl Wallace of Clearwater, Fla.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends met the family Monday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services were Tuesday, Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home cemetery, Otsego.

Contributions in memory of Stacey may be made to Morgan's college fund or the Leukemia Foundation of Michigan.

Medferd E. 'Med' Starr, 84

Medferd E. "Med" Starr, 84, of Otsego passed away Monday, April 10, 2006, in Kalamazoo. Mr. Starr was born Nov. 4, 1921, in Tippecanoe, Ind., to Norman and Nona (Hatfield) Starr.

Med served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. After over 30 years of service he retired from Mead Paper Co. in Otsego.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego, a life member of VFW Post #3030 and a member of the Otsego Moose Lodge #345.

Some of Med's favorite activities were golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting, dancing, traveling and spending winters in Florida.

On June 18, 1942, in Bloomingdale he married June Garton, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Norman (Nancy) Starr and Medford (Sally) Starr, both of Otsego; eight grandchildren, Scott Starr, Jana (Brian Langley) Starr, Kishella (Dave) Roelof, Cherie (George) Owens, Todd (Anna) Starr, David (Heather) Starr, Michael (Melissa) Blackwell and Natalie (Troy) Wolthuis; 13 great-grandchildren, Jacob, Tyler and Justin Starr, Trae, Montana and Cheyton Blackwell, Trevor, Ty and Trenton Wolthuis, Kelsey and Jordan Owens, Delaney and Madie Starr; his brother, Paul Starr of Buchanan; his sister, Marjorie Lattrell of Niles; a sister-in-law, Lee (Dick) Brenner and two brothers-in-law, Earl "Pete" Garton and Mondo Bortz; many nieces and nephews; and several special friends.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline Jimmerson, Winifred Roberts and Barbara Bortz; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Starr, Margie Garton, August Lattrell and Bill Roberts.

Friends met the family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today (Thursday), April 12, at the First Congregational Church of Otsego. Pastor Don Ray and the Rev. Dan Minor officiated. Military Honors at Mountain Home cemetery, Otsego were provided by VFW Post #3030.

Contributions in memory of Med may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or the First Congregational Church of Otsego.

Grace A. (Timmerman) Veldt, 96

Grace A. (Timmerman) Veldt, 96, of Kalamazoo passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006, in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Veldt was born Oct. 12, 1909, in Grand Rapids to Hannah and Gertrude (Deurloo) DeBoer.

Grace was a past member of the Twin Lakes Reformed Church Women's Guild and the Triangle Club of Alamo. She attended the Alamo Community Church.

Surviving are two daughters and two sons, Shirley (Steve) Boelman of Kalamazoo, Eldon (Dianne) Timmerman of Plainwell, Gertrude (Louis) Prieskorn of South Haven and Glenn (Judy) Timmerman of Kalamazoo; two daughters-in-law, Dianne Timmerman of Florida and Dorothy Timmerman of Alamo; her stepchildren, Robert (Dorothy) Veldt of Plainwell, Louise Harvey and John Veldt, both of Kalamazoo; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Cornelius Timmerman in 1972 and Harm Veldt in 2004; a son, Warren Timmerman in 2003; a grandson Terry; and her siblings, John, Joe and Fred DeBoer, Elizabeth Medema, Kate Middlebush and Cobie Ekema.

Friends met with the family Sunday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where services were Monday, the Rev. William Walker officiating. Burial followed at Alamo Center cemetery.

Contributions in memory of Grace may be made to the Alamo Community Church.

Earl Lawrence Feltenbarger, 68

Earl Lawrence Feltenbarger, 68, of Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo, formerly of Allegan, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2006. He was born Jan. 28, 1938, in Charlotte to Clarence Carl Feltenbarger and Catherine Irene McClanathan.

Mr. Feltenbarger retired in 1993 from the State of Michigan Transportation Department after 32 years as a laborer. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

On Aug. 5, 1960, he married Janice Dawn Heemstra, who survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Renee and Todd Johnson and Pam and Lowell Winne, all of Fennville; one son, Mike and Denise Feltenbarger of Pullman; one sister, Dorothy Russell of Charlotte; two brothers, Harry and Lou Feltenbarger of Rise and Bruce Feltenbarger of Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Feltenbarger.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Family services will be at a later date. An online registry book is available at www.chappellfuneralhome.com

Russell L. Pipher, 88

Mr. Russell L. Pipher, 88, of Kalamazoo passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2006, in Kalamazoo. Mr. Pipher was born July 29, 1917, in Cass County to LaVere and Cora (Bowen) Pipher.

He graduated from Constantine High School and was employed by the Kalamazoo Co. Maintenance Department until his retirement.

Russell married the former Maxine Mihills.

Surviving are his daughter, Evelyn Ware of LeRoy; his son, Dale (Jane) Ropp of Marysville; a sister, Doris (Wendell) Malcolm of Colon; a brother, William (Doris) Pipher of Jones; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and two wives.

Friends met with the family Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. There were no services. Burial took place at Alamo Center cemetery.

Cleo Fleming, 96

Cleo Fleming, 96, of Plainwell died on April 5, 2006, at Borgess Medical Center. He was born Aug. 19, 1909, in Galesburg to John and Edna (Hallock) Fleming.

Cleo was always a hard worker and over the years had worked at Murray's Packing and Michigan Technical Institute where he was the maintenance supervisor.

He was also very active in his community serving as the Mayor of Plainwell-formerly the oldest living mayor-on the fire department, as a city councilman, and on the county commission.

On June 30, 1933, Cleo married Dorothy Wazek.

Cleo's family includes his sons, Dan and Sandy Fleming of Plainwell and Tom and Nancy Fleming of Allegan; grandchildren, Diane, Shelly, Rose and Dennis; several great-grandchildren; his sister, Hazel and Lewis Sage of Plainwell; his brother, George and Joyce Herbert of Plainwell; several nieces and nephews; and his special friend and companion, Pearl Miller.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, grandson Larry Markillie; brothers, Clare, Harold, Harley and Bill; sisters, Clara and Charlene; and special friend, Margaret Gould.

Friends visited with Cleo's family on Sunday at the Life Story Funeral Home, RDMG, 120 S. Woodhams, Plainwell, where his service was Monday.

Jessie M. Kimmer, 90

Jessie M. Kimmer, 90, of Lowell, formerly of Comstock and Plainwell, died April 6, 2006, at Cumberland Manor. She was born March 12, 1916, in Schoolcraft to John and Illumanatta (O'Brien) Shearer.

On June 28, 1941, she united in marriage with Fredrick W. Kimmer Jr., who preceded her in death in 1989 after 48 years of marriage.

Until her health began to fail, Jessie was an active member of the Plainwell Senior Citizens group. Members of Jessie's family include her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Gini Kimmer of Lowell; her grandchildren, Craig Kimmer of Holton-Hancock, Lis and Rick Trottier of New Hampshire, Dan Forbes of Grand Rapids and John and Melissa Forbes of Niles; her sisters-in-law, Doris Shearer, Fran Shearer, Shirley Shearer; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends visited with Jessie's family and friends Monday at the Life Story Funeral Home, RDMG, Plainwell, where funeral services were held.

Anna Mae Towne, 83

Anna Mae Towne, 83, of Plainwell, died at her home Thursday April 12, 2006. She was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Cooper Township the daughter of Herman and Fannie (Engel) Hummel.

She has been a resident of the Plainwell area most of her life. On Oct. 27, 1945, she married Garner Towne, and he survives.

Other members of Anna's family include her children and their spouses, Douglas (Judy) Towne of Portland and Dale (Beverly) Towne of Otsego; grandchildren, Rachel, Samuel and Nora Wintermute and Timothy and Curtis Towne; a brother, Benjamin Hummel of Otsego; and sisters, Marian Ray and Joyce Mills of Otsego and Doris Geiger of Marshall.

Anna was preceded in death by two sisters, Elda VanFleet and Helen Hoovner; and a brother, Charles Hummel.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Friendship Wesleyan Church, 1285 102nd Ave., in Plainwell. Anna will be buried at Ft. Custer National cemetery.

Carlton "Bill" Andrews, 93

Carlton "Bill" Andrews, 93, of Plainwell died on April 11, 2006, at Borgess Medical Center. He was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Martin to Charles and Edna (Pardee) Andrews.

He worked for several years at Angle Steel and later in Parts and Service at Koestner Pontiac until his retirement. He built and helped run the Andrews Trailer Park and helped his father at the Andrews Cider Mill.

Bill attended Wayside Chapel, Grace Bible Church, and Lighthouse Baptist Church. He was a member of the Knights of the Pythians.

On Sept. 14, 1935, he married Fannie Brown.

His family includes his wife, Fannie of Plainwell; children, Linda and William Herold of Greenville and Richard and Dianne Andrews of Plainwell; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Andy Andrews and Walter Andrews.

Friends viewed Bill's Life Story Film and visited with his family on Friday at the Life Story Funeral Home, RDMG, 120 S.
