STIFLER, JOSEPH WARREN Age 83 of Naples, FL. Died March 27, 1998 at North Collier Hospital. Formerly of Rochester and Glen Arbor, MI. He moved to Naples in 1977. He graduated from the University of Detroit in 1936, with a degree in Civil Engineering, and was a veteran of WWII, serving as navigator in the U.S. Navy. As President of the Thompson-Schmidt Company, General Contractors, he was the former President of the Association of General Contractors for the years 1960 and 1961, serving on both state and regional boards. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Malpeli Stifler; his children, James J. Stifler and his wife, Gayle of Marco Island, FL, Anne Forbes of Taos, N.M. and Frederick F. Stifler of Cincinnati, Ohio; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Peppler. GOULD, JEAN BERNARD, April 1, 78 years of Windsor, Ontario. Beloved wife of Wesley Larson Gould, Ph.D. and mother of Sarra (Bob) Gould Marshall, Meg (Brian) Pope, Leona (Bill) Gould-McElhone and the late Frank Gould; grandmother of Nicholas Frank Pope, Matthew Henry Pope and Erica Celeste Marshall. Jean passed away after a lengthy battle with emphysema. Born in Cleveland, she lived in Detroit for many years before retiring with her husband in Windsor. A tireless supporter of social justice throughout her life, Jean devoted her considerable energy and keen intellect to many civic and non-profit groups. She was especially active in the anti-war and civil rights movements and devoted much of the 1970 s and 80 s to The Movement For A Free Philippines. A woman of tremendous courage, Jean survived a car-train collision at age 10 that claimed her father s life and left her with disabling and painful injuries for the rest of her life. Undaunted by her misforture, she went on to graduate with honours from Shaw High School (1940) and Ohio State (1945), took graduate studies in English literature at Purdue University, raised four loving children and remained active in a number of causes. SHORT, JAMES ROBERT, Age 66, of Howard Colorado passed away on March 29, 2000. Mr. Short was born at Milan, MI on April 22, 1933, a son of the late James Martin and Gwendolyn Lentz Short. Robert lived and worked around the Detroit area most of his life, moving to Howard 12 years ago. He loved fishing and 4 wheeling. He also loved to work. He is survived by 5 daughters, Jody Wescott of Piermont, NH, Jamie Tibai of Carleton, MI, Joyce French of Castle Rock, CO, Jennifer Short of Pinckney, MI and Jill Gilman of Cornith, Vt., 3 sisters, Janet Conrad of MI, Hilda Amburgy of FL, Rose Graham of IN, 2 brothers, Samuel Short and Hillery Short both of MI, 15 grandchildren.
