Martha Oirzanowski-Nikodemski, age 91, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, May 1, 2006, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born May 30, 1914 in Bischofrode, Germany.
Survivor of a Nazi slave labor camp (along with her husband Boleslaw, and son Bruno) and a legal immigrant to the USA, after WWII. By a miraculous quirk of fate, their Nazi camp was captured by the American Army, shortly before the Soviet Army arrived at the same site. Her husband served as an interpreter for the U. S. Army, until the Soviets readjusted the local border, and the family was forced to break out through Soviet roadblocks, to gain access to the ETO-Allied zone. Two families broke out simultaneously, and both were shot at and machine-gunned while they crashed through the blockades. All survived. Her husband worked on the U.S. Army Marshall-Plan reconstruction of Europe, as a carpenter & bridge builder, and also in the Berlin Airlift, during the subsequent early Cold-War era.
Her family immigrated from the western-zone of Germany, through Ellis Island, N.Y., in 1950. They were sponsored into the USA by a farming family in the area of Cheboygan-Levering, Michigan. Her family served the required three-years of legal servitude for the sponsor, and then relocated to the Hillsdale area. Stock's Mill was their local, and loyal employer, for decades. A natural homemaker, Martha was a wonderful mom, and managed to get her family through all of this history.
She was preceded by her husband Boleslaw, "Bennie," in December 1981. She is survived by her son, Bruno, a 1961 Hillsdale High School graduate, grandsons, Stefan and Elliott, of Colorado Springs, CO; sisters, Benigna and Leokadia Michalska of Lodz, Poland.
