Clarence E. Nelson

COLDWATER -- Clarence E. Nelson, age 82, of Coldwater died on Aug. 24, 2004 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1922 in Augusta, Ark., to James F. and Winnie (Payne) Nelson. He married Betty J. Tarnow on Jan. 10, 1961 in Westville, Ind. She survives.

Mr. Nelson lived in the area since 1972. He served in the U. S. Army in World War II.

Clarence was a truck driver for 50 years delivering pickup trucks, Chrysler products and other automotive equipment.

He is survived by wife Betty J.; daughter Laurie Stoll of Athens; four sons, James F. Nelson of South Carolina, Lon (Peggy) Nelson of Battle Creek, David N. (Debbie) Nelson of Stafford, Va., and Edward J. (Ruth Ann) Nelson of Hamburg, Ark.; two sisters, Aline Winters of Arkansas and Margaret Peebles of Arkansas; step-son John Mansfield of North Carolina; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, his parents and a brother.

Clarence was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Union City; D.A.V. in Coldwater and a retired Teamster.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City.

Services will take place on Friday, Aug. 27 at 10:30 am at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Union City, with Pastor David Dodge of Our Savior Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Ft. Custer National cemetery in Augusta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Arrangements are by the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City.

Susan Yearling White

MONTGOMERY -- Susan Yearling White passed away on Feb. 26, 2004.

A memorial and lunch with family and friends will be held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 824 Withington Road in Montgomery.

William P. Good

COLDWATER -- William P. Good, age 90, of Coldwater, died on Aug. 4, 2004 in Coldwater.

Good was born on June 19, 1914 in Coldwater, to Harry W. and Frances J. (Parker) Good. He married Mary Louise Foster on Aug. 15, 1953 at the Methodist Church in Bronson. She survives.

Mr. Good was lifelong resident of Coldwater. He joined the U. S. Army in 1942 and spent 36 months in Iran, where he built roads. He was in the 334th Engineer Special Services Regiment, he also served in Europe.

While in high school he worked at Rotegens Dime Store and then the A & P Store. He then worked at the Homer Foundry for 25 years, and Charles Stokes Marine Engines for 25 years. He then began working with Systems Unlimited, retiring in 1985.

Survivors include his wife Mary and six nephews.

Good was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Mr. Good was a 1932 graduate of Coldwater High School. He was a member of the Coldwater First Presbyterian Church, a 50-year member of the choir, he served as treasurer for 40 years, and was an Elder, becoming instrumental in the lighting of the church steeple. He also loved to travel.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater. Services will follow visitation at 2 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, with Dr. James Troust officiating. Burial will be at Lockwood cemetery in Ovid Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church steeple renovation or the Tibbits Opera House renovation.

Arrangements are by the Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater.

Harry R. "Bob" Butler

HILLSDALE -- Harry R. "Bob" Butler, age 78, of Hillsdale, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, Aug. 15, surrounded by his beloved family.

Mr. Butler was born on Oct. 21, 1925, in Wyandotte to Harry and Audrey Butler. He married Jane Gabriel on June 21, 1947. She survives. Mr. Butler was a 1943 graduate of Wyandotte High School, and attended Michigan State College.

Bob is survived by his son, David R. Butler (Carol) of Ann Arbor; daughter Debora L. Snyder (John) of Quincy; daughter Tarri Butler of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren Nathan Butler of Ann Arbor, Devon Butler of New York City, Will Alarid of Corvallis, Ore., Drew Snyder of East Lansing and Caitlin Snyder of Quincy.

Mr. Butler opened Butler Auto Supply in Southgate in 1960. He moved to Branch County in 1974, and opened Quincy Auto. Son David joined Bob in the auto supply business in 1983. They expanded the Quincy operation, and it became Butler Auto Parts & Paint. Bob retired in 2000.

Mr. Butler is remembered as a business owner of the highest integrity, a patriot who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, a conscientious outdoorsman and hunter and an avid collector and scholar of Civil War military memorabilia. Bob also enjoyed reading and restoring and driving antique automobiles. Mr. Butler was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 50-year member of the American Legion.

A funeral service celebrating the life of Bob Butler will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 2 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale, with Fr. Thomas Butler as celebrant. Interment will be at Fort Custer National cemetery in Battle Creek. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Aug. 17, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be directed to Hospice of Hillsdale.

Stewart H. Beeman

ALAGANSEE TOWNSHIP -- Stewart H. Beeman, age 47, of Alagansee Township, Reading, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2004 at his home.

He was born on July 20, 1957 in Seymour, Ind. to Harry and Marjorie (Widner) Beeman, and attended the Camden-Frontier Schools. A self-employed timber buyer, Stewart also enjoyed horse-pulling, playing cards and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Tammy Latta, whom he married on Oct. 20, 1980; one daughter, Brandy (Joe) Beardslee of Coldwater; one son, Stewart Beeman of Reading; his mother, Marjorie Beeman of Camden; four sisters, Linda (Lloyd) Mofield of Falmuth, Ind., Joyce (Dennis) McCormick of Jonesville, Christine Burton of Three Rivers and Tammy Burger of Hillsdale; four brothers, Lewis (Evelyn) Beeman of Camden, Russell (Jackie) Beeman of Alexandria, Ind., Charlie Beeman of Three Rivers and Roger (Penny) Beeman of Camden; and one granddaughter, DeAnna Beeman.

Preceding him in death were his father, Harry Beeman and one sister, Judith Lawson.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, at 3 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home in Reading, with Pastor Gary Hoffman officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

Memorials to the family would be appreciated.

Michael L. Everett

COLDWATER -- Michael L. Everett , age 53, of Coldwater died on Thursday, July 22, 2004 in Coldwater.

Mike was born on Sept. 5, 1950 in Coldwater to Lewis and Louise (Kelly) Everett. He married Mary Krzeminski on June 2, 1973 in Coldwater.

Mike was a lifelong resident of Coldwater. He worked at the Florence Crane Correctional Facility in Coldwater as a corrections officer for the past 15 years. Prior to that he worked at Midwest Foundry for 20 years. Mike was a member of the Quincy Masons, he enjoyed making model cars and Nascar racing. He was a very devoted family man.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mike is survived by his wife, Mary; his step-mother Wilma Everett of Girard; his brothers and sisters-in-law Tom and Emma Everett of Reading, Jeff and Marlene Everett of Marshall; step-brother Charles and Betsy Olney of Girard; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 25, 2004 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home. The service will be held on Monday, July 26, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. John Scott of Girard United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery in Girard.

Memorial donations may be directed to The American Diabetes Association or The Michigan Corrections Organization - Crisis Fund.

Ruth Jane Ransom

COLDWATER -- Ruth Jane Ransom, age 88, of Coldwater died on Friday, July 23, 2004 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1915 in Hillsdale to Charles and Eva Stanley.

Ransom is survived by five children, Jane (Carl) Gillette of Coldwater, Betty Wagoner of Coldwater, Shirley King of Detroit, Yvonne (William) Vanover of Coldwater and David Ransom of Detroit; one sister, Annabell Johnson of Hickory Corners; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, three brothers, a sister and life partner Frank Stainski.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today, July 24 at the Gillespie Funeral Home in Coldwater.

Ruby L. Southwell

LITCHFIELD -- Ruby L. Southwell, age 65, of Litchfield passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.

A lifelong area resident, she was born on July 15, 1939 in Reading to Emery and Mary (Patrick) Meade, and graduated from Jonesville High School in 1958. For many years Ruby had been employed by Wal-Mart in Jonesville. She attended Calvary Baptist Church in Hillsdale.

On Nov. 23, 1958 she married Donald Raymond Southwell, and he preceded her in death in 1992.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Lora Rials of Brazil, Ind., Mrs. Donald (Susan) Stevens of Hillsdale and Mrs. Charles (Karen) Houseknecht of Jonesville; one sister, Mrs. Richard (Barbara) Hodge; seven brothers, Charles (Shirley) Meade, Raymond (Donna) Meade, George (Sally) Meade, Kenneth Meade, Richard (Darlene) Meade and Dale (Marlene) Meade; and six grandchildren, Trevor, Ashley and Jordan Rials, Jessica and Nicole Houseknecht and Dana Stevens.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Anna Louise, and one son-in-law, Steven Rials.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 26, at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield, with Pastor Brian Nutter officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hope cemetery in Litchfield.

Visitation is scheduled on Sunday, July 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Calvary Baptist Church, located at 192 Spring Street in Hillsdale, or the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.

Amos Fleming

COLDWATER -- Amos Fleming, age 90, of Coldwater died on Friday, July 30, 2004 at Drew's Place of Coldwater II.

Amos was born on May 11, 1914 in Benton, Ky., to Amos and Maude (Hicks) Fleming, Sr. He graduated in 1935 from Ford Trade School in Dearborn. He and Annie C. (Tingle) were married on Sept. 5, 1936.

Amos was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be missed by all

He is survived by his wife; daughters Louise (Robert) Meiring of Florida, Susan (Calvin) Mauk of North Caroling; sons David (Shirley) Fleming of Arizona, Steven Fleming of Maryland and Jeff (Mary) Fleming of Michigan. He had 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many friends in the Coldwater Community. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Carl.

Amos lived for about 60 years in the Coldwater area and worked as a tool designer. He also operated an independent radio and television repair service for many years. He retired from the Midwest Foundry Company in 1976. His favorite pass-times were amateur radio (WA8LGO) and fishing, and was fond of entertaining audiences with his endless supply of fishing stories.

The family thanks the staff of Drew's Place of Coldwater II, hospice and Dr. Mark Kallus for their special care of Amos.

There will be no funeral services. Memorial donations should be directed to the Branch County Sportsman's Club or Community Health Center Hospice

Arrangements are by the Gillespie Funeral Home in Coldwater.

Sharon Kay (Zerby) Hoshaw

BATTLE CREEK -- Mrs. Sharon Kay (Zerby) Hoshaw, age 63, of Battle Creek, passed away on Tuesday July 27, 2004 at the Battle Creek Health System.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1940 in Sturgis to Eldon J. and Josephine M. (DeBack) Zerby.

Hoshaw graduated from Union City High School in 1960. She married William Franklin Hoshaw on June 28, 1969 in Windsor, Canada.

Sharon was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will be missed by all. She is survived by her husband; daughters Michele (Don) Harrison and Nora (Kraig) Eaton; and sons Brian (Heather) Miller and Bill (Melissa) Hoshaw, all of Battle Creek. She had seven grandchildren.

Visitation took place on Friday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will resume from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, July 31 at the Spencer Family Funeral Home in Athens. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with Reverend John McClimans officiating. Interment will take place at Lakeside cemetery in Colon.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Church of God in Three Rivers.

Stella L. Borton

FREDRICK, Md. -- Stella L. Borton, age 89, of Fredrick, Md., formerly of Branch County, died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Northampton Manor, Fredrick, Md.

She was born June 25, 1914 in Lawton, Okla. to Harry C. and Mary Fern (Chamberlin) Payne.

She married Donald J.T. Borton on Oct. 2, 1958 in Lawton, Okla. He preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2001.

Stella grew up in Lawton and moved to Branch County in 1966. She was a practical nurse with the Federal Civil Service, retiring in 1966.

Survivors include one son, Edward and Bev Shelton of Fredrick, Md., eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; son, Wayne and four brothers.

Mrs. Borton was a member of the World War II Mothers, women's society in Quincy and Practical Nurses Association in Oklahoma.

Visitation will be Friday, June 4, 2004 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home, Coldwater, with Pastor John Good of Union Church, Quincy, officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery in Quincy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Church of Quincy.

Arrangements are by the Putnam Funeral Home, Coldwater.
