Therese F. Cairns
Grosse Pointe Woods resident Therese F. Cairns, 76, beloved wife of Frank Cairns, died on Monday, March 4, 2002, at Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe.
Mrs. Cairns was born in Detroit and graduated from Marygrove College in 1949.
She taught kindergarten at Von Steuben School in Detroit and C.C.D. at Our Lady Star of the Sea School in Grosse Pointe Woods.
Mrs. Cairns was a member of the Star of the Sea Rosary Altar Society and the Marygrove College Alumni Association.
She is also survived by her sons Robert, Terrence and Michael, her daughters Mary-Pat Michalzuk and Katherine Grace; 12 grandchildren; her brother Owen Jaglois and her sister Rita Carlson.
Arrangements were handled by the A. H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods. A funeral Mass was celebrated on March 7, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Agnes P. Casari
Harper Woods resident Agnes P. Casari, dear wife of George R. Casari, died on Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Heartland Healthcare-Georgian East in Grosse Pointe Woods.
Born in Kulpmont, Pa., Mrs. Casari earned a bachelor's degree in education from Bloomsburg State Teacher's College in 1941 and a master's degree from Wayne State University in 1957.
She began a teaching career that spanned 46 years in Kulpmont, Pa. Mrs. Casari was later a guidance counselor at James Rodgers Junior High School in St. Clair Shores. She taught mentally handicapped students and was fundamental in creating the special education program in St. Clair Shores' Lake Shore Public School District.
Mrs. Casari was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority and the Gold Coast Society for the Mentally Handicapped.
Her interests centered on her family while her hobbies included traveling, antiques and politics.
She is also survived by her daughters Cherie A. Casari and Mary Beth (Harry) Okray; her grandsons Jeffrey Okray and Stephen Okray; her brother Stanley Sheptock and her sister Helen Wojno. She was predeceased by her brothers George Sheptock, Joseph Sheptock and Frank Sheptock and her sister Elizabeth Anderson.
Arrangements are being handled by the A. H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods. The family will receive relatives and friends at the All Saints Polish National Catholic Church, 5555 17 Mile in Sterling Heights, on Thursday, March 14, at 9:30 a.m. until the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be at the White Chapel cemetery in Troy.

Margery C. Ciavola
Former Grosse Pointe Farms resident Margery Commetta Ciavola, 91, died on Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Bon Secours Nursing Home in Venice, Fla.
The Huntsville, Ohio native graduated from St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio as a registered nurse in 1932. She was the supervisor of the clinic and emergency room at St. Luke's and later, the head nurse in the operating room of Women's Hospital of Michigan.
Mrs. Ciavola was a dedicated member of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, serving as a deacon on the Outreach Committee and a Circle member. She was also a devoted volunteer for the Ohio State Nurses Association and the Michigan State Nurses Association.
Her other interests included gardening, attending the theater and opera, traveling and walking along the shoreline of Lake St. Clair.
Mrs. Ciavola is survived by her stepsons Rex George Ciavola and Howard Ciavola; stepdaughters Gloria Ciavola Bernard and Adeline Ciavola Firnschild; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and her sister Ruth Underwood. She was predeceased by her husband George Ciavola.
Arrangements are being handled by the Verheyden Funeral Home of Grosse Pointe Park. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 3:30 p.m., at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, 16 Lakeshore in Grosse Pointe Farms. She will be interred in a private ceremony at Evergreen cemetery in Detroit.

Sarah M. Cinelli
Sarah "Maggie" McGraw Cinelli, 79, of Grosse Pointe, died peacefully on Saturday, March 2, 2002, at her home in Falmouth, Maine.
Sarah was a lifelong resident of Grosse Pointe where she and her husband, Ferdinand H. Cinelli, made their home together. She was very active in volunteer work for many local organizations but her true focus in life was her family.
She attended Grosse Pointe Country Day School, graduated from The Ethel Walker School and earned a bachelor of arts degree in bacteriology from Vassar College. Following college, she worked for several years at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City before returning to Grosse Pointe to raise her family.
Sarah was a member of the Tau Beta Association, the National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of Michigan, the Garden Club of Michigan, the Henry Ford Hospice Society, the Junior League of Detroit, the Mary Thompson Foundation, the Women's Committee of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Artists Market, the Morning Music Club, the Squirrel Island Library Board and the Etruscan Foundation. In addition, she belonged to the Country Club of Detroit and the Down East Yacht Club.
Sarah treasured her summers spent at the family cottage on Squirrel Island on the coast of Maine. Her children and grandchildren would gather there each August to celebrate her birthday, a very special annual event.
She is survived by her husband, Ferdinand H. Cinelli; her son, Peter S. (Gail) Cinelli of Yarmouth, Maine; her daughters Catherine A. (Rogelio) Henriquez of Panama City, Panama; Francesca L. (Randall) Stratton of Spannocchia, Italy and Gioconda C. (Thayer) McMillan of Grosse Pointe Farms; her sister Grace M. Parr of Taos, N.M.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers Robert S. McGraw and Thomas A. McGraw.
A private memorial service will be held at Christ Church in Grosse Pointe Farms.

Jeanne R. Piggins
Jeanne R. Piggins, 89, died on Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
Mrs. Piggins was born on Sept. 19, 1912, in Chelsea. She lived with her husband, the late Judge Edward S. Piggins, and children in Grosse Pointe Woods for many years before moving to Grand Rapids.
She is survived by her sons Edward (Polly) Piggins of San Jose, Calif. and John (Kathleen) Piggins of Grand Rapids; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son Danford Piggins and her sister Nancy.
Arrangements are being handled by the Ofield Funeral Home of Kentwood. The family will meet relatives and friends Saturday, March 16, at 9:15 a.m., at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford in Grosse Pointe Woods, prior to the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be at White Chapel cemetery in Troy.

Stella Scandalis
Stella Scandalis of the City of Grosse Pointe died on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit.
Miss Scandalis was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She completed her education in the Detroit schools and business college and worked for the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company for many years. Miss Scandalis was employed as a private secretary.
Her interests included interior decorating, fashion coordinator and personal shopping. She was an avid reader and traveler, having traveled to all countries in Europe and Africa.
Miss Scandalis was a giving and generous person to family and friends. She will be sadly missed by her family.
She is survived by her sisters Ann Scandalis Buysse, Dena Scandalis and Carrie Scandalis Maul; her sister-in-law Mabel Owers Scandalis; nephews and nieces; a grandnephew and grandnieces. She was predeceased by her parents James and Angeline Scandalis, her brothers Peter Scandalis, George Scandalis, William Scandalis and Steven Scandalis and her sister Alice Scandalis Corona.
Funeral services were private.
Jay C. Perry II
Grosse Pointe Park resident Jay C. Perry II, 76, died on Friday, March 22, 2002, at Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe.
Mr. Perry was born in Sandusky, Ohio on May 8, 1925. He spent his life dedicated to the automotive sales business, working in a number of metropolitan Detroit area dealerships until the 1970s when he became the dealer principal at Ed Bailey American Motors Dealership in Royal Oak. After selling that property, he became the General Manager of Bill Lee Oldsmobile in Mount Clemens until he retired in 1990.
Following his retirement, he was very involved in Grosse Pointe Park recreational programs and devoted to efforts to assist handicapped children.
As a veteran who served in the United States Navy, Mr. Perry was an active member of the American Legion, the National Rifle Association and the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. He enjoyed hunting, vintage cars and played golf in several leagues at the Gowanie Golf Club.
Mr. Perry is survived by his son Chuck (Brenda) Perry; three grandchildren; one great-grandson and several cousins. He was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Annette Perry.
At Mr. Perry's request, no public memorial service was held.
