Donald E. Vanderpool

MONTGOMERY -- Donald E. Vanderpool , age 81, of Montgomery, died on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004 at his residence surrounded by family. Back to top

Mr. Vanderpool was born on Aug. 9, 1922 in Fairfield Township to the late Harry E. Vanderpool and Eva Mae (Corwin) and had resided at his present address for the past 36 years.

On Oct. 28, 1946, he married Dorothy May Dulaney of Wauseon, Ohio in Angola, Ind.

Don was a lifetime farmer up until 1985. He worked as a custodian for Coldwater Community Schools from 1970 until his retirement in 1986. Don was a member of the California Presbyterian Church since 1981 where he was honored to serve as an elder for many years. He was also a life member of the Farmer's Antique Tractor and Engine Association and a member of the Heritage Farmer's Club, both of Adrian. He was also a member of the Northeast Indiana Steam and Gas Association of LaGrange, Ind. for several years, and a member in the National Threshers' Association for over 30 years. Since 1986 his hobbies have consisted of restoring antique tractors, traveling throughout 28 states, camping and woodworking which his wife, children and grandchildren actively participated. Don was a volunteer at Reading Community Schools for six years to help children improve their reading skills and enjoyed participating in the Branch County Relay for Life.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter Helen Mae Aiken; three sisters Zelma Potes, Ema Ardene Ferry and Anna Ilene(Tommy) Potes; and two brothers Elwood and Jack Vanderpool.

Surviving members of his family include his wife Dorothy; four sons, Donald and Norma Jean Vanderpool of Quincy, Harry W. Vanderpool of Coldwater, LaRay and Deb Vanderpool, and Gary and Tammy Vanderpool; one daughter, Ruth Ann and Mark Omlor all of Montgomery; one son-in-law, James Aiken of Coldwater; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; sister, Vivian Handy of Reading; brothers, Norman Vanderpool of Jasper, Bruce Vanderpool of Palmryra and Elwin Vanderpool of Fredrick.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.

The service will be held on Monday, Feb. 16, 2004 at 2 p.m. at California Presbyterian Church, California Township (west of Montgomery) to celebrate the life of Donald E. Vanderpool with Pastor James Hazekamp officiating.

Interment will follow at California cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Branch County Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Shirley N. Flickinger

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Shirley N. Flickinger, age 78, of Watertown, Wis., formerly of Coldwater, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004 at her home. Arrangements are pending at Putnam Funeral Home, Coldwater.

Maryanne (Lawrenson) Bernet

VALRICO, Fla. -- Maryanne (Lawrenson) Bernet, age 65, of Valrico, Fla., passed away on April 1, 2004, following a heart attack.

Born in Denver, Colo. on July 12, 1938, Maryanne attended St. Mary's Dominican College of New Orleans. She married Gerald Richard Bernet on Oct. 8, 1960 in Afton, Mo. They resided in Baraboo, Wis. for more than 25 years and in Coldwater from 1994 to 2002, before retiring to the Tampa, Fla. area. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Maryanne was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and an active member of the Elks Club. She was previously a member of the Baraboo and Coldwater chapters of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and was president of her local chapter in the Tampa area. In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by three sons, Mark Bernet and wife Sandra of Valrico, Fla., David Bernet of Washington, D.C. and Shawn Bernet and fiance Kavitha Justin of Clifton, N.J.; and one daughter, Shelby Baker and husband Glenn of Seattle, Wash. She was also blessed with six grandchildren, Caitlin, Ryan and Daniel Bernet, and Emma, Jack and Nell Baker.

enneth B. Wargo, Jr.

COLDWATER -- Kenneth B. Wargo, Jr., age 41, of Coldwater, died on April 9, 2004 at Parkview Hospital, Ft. Wayne, Ind. Back to top

He was born on March 16, 1963 in Redford to Kenneth, Sr. and Kathryn Wargo of Royal Oak. He worked at Electromate Company as a machine operator in Fremont, Ind.

He is survived by his parents; girlfriend, Wendy Wiley; children, Justina Wargo of Ferndale, Kristin Ketchum of Coldwater and Justin Wargo of Hazel Park; brothers and sisters, Kevin (Debby) of Hazel Park, Kurt (Monica Hines) of Eastpoint, Kandice (Tony) Dash of Warren and Kimberly Wargo of Hazel Park; and eight nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 to 8 p.m. at William Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 705 W. 11 Mile Rd., Royal Oak. Services are Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Roseland Park cemetery, Berkley.

Andrew Andrews

BRONSON -- Andrew Andrews, age 87, of New Baltimore, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at the Regency Health Care Center in Taylor. Graveside services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Batavia Township cemetery. Arrangements by Kolcz Funeral Home of Bronson.

Iva Viola Allison

BATTLE CREEK -- Iva Viola Allison, age 92, of Battle Creek, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2004 at Evergreen Manor.

She was born Nov. 12, 1911 in LaGrange County, Ind. the daughter of Fred and Lena (Fields) Erk. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Allison.

Surviving are daughter, Alberta Louise (Erk) Day of Battle Creek and son David Carl Rogers of St. Louis, Mo.

She leaves behind nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Iva was employed at Kellogg's for 41 years. She belonged to the Kellogg 25-year Club and Bedford Chapter No. 471, Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening, travel and Bible study.

Memorial services will be Saturday, June 5, at 1 p.m. at Minges Hills Church with Rev. Robert Zuhl officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Minges Hills Church, 3180 Beckley Road West, Battle Creek, MI 49015; or Southern Care Hospice, 4341 South Westnedge Avenue, Suite 2100, Kalamazoo, MI 49088.

Laryn W. Tinsley

COLDWATER -- Laryn W. Tinsley, age 47, of Coldwater, died Friday, May 28, 2004 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Memorial services are being planned for a later date. Arrangements by the Gillespie Funeral Home in Coldwater.

Leeta "Lorene" Case

UNION CITY -- Leeta "Lorene" Case, age 91, of 1971 Case Drive in Union City, died on Sunday, Aug. 15, at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born on July 23, 1913, in Matteson Township, a daughter to the late Starr A. and Isla M. (Renner) Copeland.

Lorene graduated from Colon High School with the Class of 1931, graduated from Branch County Normal School in 1932 and from Argubright Business College in 1935.

On June 4, 1939, she married William L. Case in Matteson Township, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 2000, after 61 years of marriage.

Lorent had made her home at her present address for the past 38 years, coming from Matteson Township. She was a homemaker and had been the bookkeeper for Case Brothers Marrow for many years. She was a member of the Union City United Methodist Church, United Methodist Woman's and Mary's Circle.

Sue is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Ralph) Harshberger of Union City; two sisters, Arlene Case of Union City and Rolene (Byron) Tefft of Kalamazoo; two beloved granddaughters, Shannon (Corey) Bevard and Shaine Wyant, all of Union City; and her heart's joy, five grandchildren, Ashley, Alyson, Scotty, Dylan and Madyson.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, Aug. 17, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of L. Lorene Case will be on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. John Moore and Rev. Bob Hughes presiding.

If desired, the family asks memorials be made in memory of Lorene to the Community Health Center of Branch County Hospice or to the Union City United Methodist Church Stained Galss Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Jane Gates

COLDWATER -- Jane Gates, age 52, of Coldwater died on Friday, Aug. 27, 2004 at The Laurels of Coldwater.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater and will be announced as soon as they become available.

John R. Stewart Jr.

BOKEELIA, Fla. -- John R. Stewart Jr., age 79 of Bokeelia, Fla. and formerly of Coldwater, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, Fla.

Cremation has taken place and there will be a memorial service at a later date at Sunset View cemetery in Jonesville. Local arrangements are entrusted to the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville.

Linda L. Drake

COLDWATER -- Linda L. Drake, age 64, of Coldwater, died on Friday, Sept. 3, 2004 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Linda was born on Jan. 19, 1940 in Monroe to Roy and Edna Drake. She was formerly married to Albert Frantz of coldwater. He survives. Drake had lived in the Coldwater area since 1978.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Drake is survived by her sister Marlene and James Steel of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

Services for Linda Drake will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at the

Roselawn Memorial cemetery in LaSalle.

Arrangements are by Dutcher funeral home, Inc., 440 W. Chicago Street, Coldwater.

Richard V. Lutjens

COLDWATER -- Richard V. Lutjens, age 78 of Coldwater died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004 at The Laurels of Coldwater.

Lutjens was born May 31, 1926 in Camden to Charles and Almira Lutjens. He married Mildred I. Lutjens on Jan. 23, 1972. She preceded him in death on Sept. 9, 1998.

Richard served in the United States Army and has lived in the Coldwater area for many years. He had formerly worked at Crotty Corporation in Quincy.

In addition to his wife, Richard is preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services for Richard Lutjens will be held at a later date.

Edith A. Abbott

COLDWATER -- Edith A. Abbott, age 70, of Coldwater, died on Monday, Sept. 13, 2004 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.

Edith was born on Aug. 27, 1934 in New Haven, Ind., to Alban and Angeline (Kamp) Schnelker. She married William Abbott on Sept. 1, 1956 in New Haven. He survives.

Edith has lived in Branch County since 1979, coming from Indiana. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Coldwater. Edith enjoyed quilting and making a home for her husband and children.

Edith was preceded in death by her brothers Joe, George and Eugene Schnelker and sister Rosalie Ruger.

In addition to her husband Bill, Edith is survived by her children Jeffery Abbott and Debbie of Woodburn, Ind., Kevin Abbott and Sarah of Coldwater and Jennifer Mileski and Ed of Ionia; brothers Jim Schnelker of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Pete Schnelker of New Haven; sisters Ruth Olinger and Alma Schnelker, both of Ft. Wayne, and Carolee Horner of Van Wert, Ohio; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home, with Rev. Fr. Brian Stanley of St. Charles Borromeo Church officiating.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mason cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to The Community of Health Center of Branch County Home Health and Hospice.

Edward Dewayne Huffman

FAIRFIELD, Calif. -- Edward Dewayne Huffman SCPO, US Navy Retired, born in Cambria Township on Nov 1, 1929, the first of three children born to Wilfred and Mabel Huffman and passed away at his home on Sept. 2, 2004 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and survived by Kathleen Cain Huffman, his spouse; two sisters; Nora Ellen Hammond of Durham, N.C. and Mary Jean Rogers of Jonesville; and various nephews and nieces.

After enlisting in the Navy at Great Lakes, Ill., in 1951, he was stationed at various Naval Air Stations and aircraft carriers, and retired from the Navy at NAS, Agana, Guam in 1981, a Korean-Vietnam veteran. He also worked for Hewlett Packard Customer Service in Mountain View ,Calif., retiring in 1985.

After retirement, he lived in Sunnyvale, Calif., until 1989, then in El Dorado Hills, Calif., in 1991 and then in Fairfield, Calif., until the present time.

He attended Hillsdale High School and Eastern Michigan College. He was a member of Fleet Reserve Association Branch 101, Santa Clara Valley.

He volunteered at David Grant Medical Center and the Paradise Valley Golf Course.

He loved golfing, hunting, gardening, his pet Brittany, Sheila, and enjoyed being a good neighbor.

A grave side service will be held in the Allen cemetery on Friday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.

Phillip P. Howard

ELKHART, Ind. -- Phillip P. Howard, age 56, of 2311 Pleasant Plain, died at 4:04 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004 at Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1948, in Mount Pleasant to Harold "Slim" and Danevieve "Danny: M. (Potvin) Howard. He married Margie A. Simond on May 29, 1971, in Coldwater.

She survives with two sons and two daughters, Mrs. Terri (Chuck) Fain, Phillip P. (Cameron) Howard, Mrs. Toni (Denver) Anthony and Darrick (Tina) Howard, all of Elkhart, Ind.; eight grandchildren; his mother; and three brothers, John "Ernie" (Kathy) Howard of Coldwater, Richard (Mary) Howard of North Carolina and Tim (Kathleen) Howard of Quincy.

His father preceded him in death.

Friends and family may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today, Sept. 14, at Billings Funeral Home, where a vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, located at 1405 N. Main St. A short commendation service will be held at the funeral home prior to the funeral mass. The Rev. William Sullivan will officiate. A military honor service will follow at Prairie Street cemetery, conducted by Elkhart DAV No. 19 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard. The body is to be cremated with private burial at Prairie Street cemetery at a later date.

Mr. Howard worked in the RV industry for more than 36 years. He was a salesman for Hart City RV at the time of his death.

He was a member of the American Legion in Quincy, the Goshen Moose Lodge and the Elkhart VFW. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, boating and camping in his RV.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served with the 241st Transportation Co. in Vietnam. He received Vietnam Service and Campaign medals.

Memorials may be given to the Phillip Howard Memorial Fund, c/o Billings Funeral Home.
