Dale Z. Dove

COLDWATER - Dale Z. Dove, 67, of Coldwater died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.

Mr. Dove was born Dec. 27, 1934 in Branch County to Henry C. and Mary E. (Pettit) Dove.

He was a lifetime resident of Branch County. He worked in construction. Some of the projects he worked on were the Capri Drive-Inn, I-69, MIS racetrack, Lakeview sewer lines, and Ludington and Midland power plants.

He was a member of Local 327 Union. He enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include one son Jim Dove of Coldwater; three daughters Connie and Joe Balowski of Lake, Mich., Cindy Peavey of Coldwater and Janene and Jeff Bradley of Coldwater; 10 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one brother Harry Dove of Six Lakes, Mich.; and two sisters Betty Ward of Coldwater and Marian Migala of Berrien Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home, Coldwater.

A service will be held Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home. Pastor David Brown of the Lockwood Church will officiate. Burial will be at the Evergreen cemetery, Girard Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Jennie L. Southcott

COLDWATER - Jennie L. Southcott, 57, of Coldwater died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at her residence.

Arrangements are pending at the Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater.

Gertrude I. Ross

Gertrude I. Ross, 99, formerly of Coldwater, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2003, in Director's Hall in Kalamazoo, following a long and productive life.

Gertrude was born in Odebolt, Iowa, on Oct. 23, 1903, the daughter of John and Teresa (Shea) Reynolds. After graduating from Odebolt High School, she continued her education over an extended period at the University of Northern Iowa, University of Colorado and Western Michigan University, receiving from the latter institution a BS degree in elementary education in 1962.She was for many years a dedicated grade school teacher in public schools in Iowa, Illinois and Dowagiac and Bronson, Mich. A member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Kalamazoo, she devoted much of her life after her homemaking and teaching careers ended to volunteerism, especially through St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Coldwater. On April 15, 1932, in LaGrange, Ill., she was united in marrriage toi Frederic C. Ross, who preceded her in death on March 4, 1958. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Krusen, Josephine Brown and Alice Reynolds; her brother, Eugene Reynolds; and seven half-brothers and sisters.She is survived by a loving family, including her sons, John Ross of Incline Village, Nev., and Frederic (Mary) Ross of Madison, Wis.; her daughter, Betsy Roellchen of Kalamazoo; her grandchildren, Michael (Gayle) Ross, Jeffrey (Sarah) Ross, Andrew (Laura) Ross and Beth (Dennis) Cosgrove; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her passing leaves a particular void in the lives of those she at one time nurtured and who, later in her life, came to nurture her.There will be a graveside service for Gertrude at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Oak Grove cemetery Chapel in Coldwater with Fr. Stephen Bartlett officiating. Memorials may be made to the Director's Hall, 600 Golden Dr., Kalamazoo, Mich. 49001. Following the graveside services, an informal gathering will be held at 2 p.m. at Director's Hall in Kalamazoo.Arrangements are by the Gillespie Funeral Home in Coldwater.George Lee Smith, 68, of Punta Gorda, Fla., passed away April 9, 2003, at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, Punta Gorda, after a long illness.He was born Oct. 8, 1934, in St. Clair Shores, Mich., the son of Carroll B. and Christine Smith.George served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War. He worked for the State of Michigan Department of Mental Health, retiring after 30 years of service. He married Beverly (Carman) Kempton in 1984. He liked to grow things from the seeds, and enjoyed taking care of the family. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. George moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., from Coldwater, Mich., in 1993.George will be greatly missed by his wife, Beverly; a brother, Ira Smith of St. Augustine, Fla.; a sister, Elsie Ames of South Haven, Mich.; three sons, Danny Smith, Robert Herlan and George Herlan, all of Coldwater; four daughters, Roxanne Howze of St. Augustine, Fla., Cindy Trutt of Darien, Ga., Debby Hodges of St. Augustine, Fla., and Jeanie Harrison of Punta Gorda, Fla.; stepchildren, Cathy Kaufman of Kentucky, Judy Salyer of South Carolina, Connie Gray of Burr Oak, Ken Kempton of Coldwater, Robert Kempton and Bruce Kempton, both of Quincy, and Brenda Stephens of Punta Gorda, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The service in celebration of George's life will be at 2 p.m. April 12, 2003, at Eastside Baptist Church, 6220 Golf Course Blvd., Punta Gorda, Fla.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Hospice of SW Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238, or to Eastside Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by Larry Taylor Funeral and Cremation Services, Punta Gorda, Fla.

Ione Evalynn Myers

Ione Evalynn Myers, 76, of Sebring, Fla., passed away at her home Tuesday, April 8, 2003.

She was born Aug. 23, 1926, to William and Ione Brook Dull in Coldwater, Mich. She had been a winter resident of Sebring since 1986 and a permanent resident since 1995, coming from Coldwater. She was a medical assistant and a member of the Elks and Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion.

She is survived by her husband, Noel F. Myers of Sebring; sons, Steven L. Myers of Tampa, Fla., and Gary Myers of Indianapolis, Ind.; brothers, Donald Dull of Quincy, Mich., and William Dull of Redman, Wash.; and 3 grandchildren.

Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home in Sebring.

Raymond A. King

Raymond A. King, 83, of Sturgis, formerly of Bronson, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Thurston Woods Village.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Bronson cemetery with full military honors.

Craig Allen Saxton

HILLSDALE - Craig Allen Saxton, 39, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2003 at Foote Memorial Hospital, Jackson.

Mr. Saxton was born March 30, 1964 in Hillsdale and graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1982.Craig was especially skilled at lawn care and loved working in his yard. He had also enjoyed bowling.He married Diana (Havens). She survives in Quincy.Other survivors include one daughter Sabrina Saxton and one son Jeffrey Saxton, both of Quincy; two brothers David (Sandy) Saxton of Copemish and Brian (Kim) Saxton of Jonesville; father Charles F. Saxton of Hillsdale; mother Dorothy Saxton of Hillsdale; and grandfather Russell Baker of Litchfield.He was preceded in death by his daughter Cheyenne Saxton; grandmother Helen Baker and step-father Kenneth Barnett.Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2003 at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy, with Pastor Bill Wilson officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2003 from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Cremation will follow his services.

Eugene W. Suever

QUINCY - Eugene W. Suever, 52, lifelong Quincy area resident, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2003 at the Community Health Center of Branch County after a long and courageous battle with MS. Back to top

Mr. Suever was born Feb. 2, 1951 in Lima, Ohio to Emerson and Margaret (Kahle) Suever. He graduated in from Quincy High School in 1969 and from Glen Oaks Community College in 1971. He owned and operated Gene's Mobil Service in Quincy for 17 years, volunteered for the National MS Society and was an active member of the Hillsdale Chapter MS Society. In 1997 he received the Advocate of the Year award from the State MS Society. He also served on the Quincy Fire Department for 14 years and had belonged to the Jaycees organization and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Coldwater. Gene lived his life with courage, grace, dignity, and most of all, humor.

He is survived by his mother Margaret Suever of Quincy; five sisters Beverly (Ray) Sebastian of Coldwater, Patricia (Charles) Lehman of Kentland, Ind., Virginia Suever of Indianapolis, Ind., Christine Suever of Alexandria, Va. and Debra (Donald) Dwight of Cary, N.C.; three brothers Glenn (Cathy) Suever of Quincy, Douglas Suever of Milwaukie, Ore., and Jeffery (Loralea) Suever of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his father.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2003 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Coldwater, with Father Brian Stanley officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview cemetery, Quincy.

Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, June 1, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., including a Rosary Service at 6 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy.

Memorials are suggested to the National MS Society or the Quincy Fire Department.

Aline M. (Burrell) Dodds

ANGOLA, Ind. - Aline M. (Burrell) Dodds, 87, of Angola, Ind., formerly of Fremont, Ind., died Friday, May 30, 2003 at St. Joseph Hospital, Ft. Wayne, Ind. Back to top

Mrs. Dodds was born April 10, 1916 in Blakeslee, Ohio to Frederick and Marie (Durr) Wandel.

Her first marriage was to Marion Russell Burrell on Jan. 27, 1934 at Hamilton, Ind. He preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1968. Her second marriage was to Edward M. Dodds on Dec. 31, 1980 at Greenwood, Ind. He preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1993.

She formerly worked at Cameron Hospital and Aro Corp. in Angola, Ind.

She was a member of Angola United Methodist Church and York Homemakers Club. Her hobbies included Quilt Making.

Survivors include five daughters Joann Bistel of Coldwater, June Person of San Diego, Calif., Janice Wilson of Frazier, Rosalee Parrish of Fremont, Ind. and Nancy Polzien of Burnsville, N.C.; four sons John Burrell of Angola, Ind., James Burrell of Fremont, Ind., Jerry Burrell of Troy and Jack Burrell of Fremont, Ind.; 26 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and one brother Edward Wandel of Hudson, Ind.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers and her two husbands.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2003 (Indiana time) at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2003 (Indiana time) at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind. Rev. Laurence Smith will officiate. Burial will be at Fremont cemetery, Fremont, Ind.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Marie T. Grant

COLDWATER - Marie T. Grant, 90, of Coldwater died Thursday, May 29, 2003 in Coldwater. Back to top

Marie was born April 8, 1913 in South Bend, Ind., to Joseph and Pearl Bauer.

Survivors include a son Gary A. Grant of Grimes, Iowa; daughters Artie J. Bussert of Bat Cave, N.C., and Pat Cudahy of Coldwater; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Branch County Hospice.

Robert E. Markley, Sr.

UNION CITY - Robert E. Markley, Sr., 67, of Union City, died Friday, May 30, 2003 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Back to top

Mr. Markley was born July 23, 1935 in Flint, Mich., to Dennis and Winfred (Aitkens) Markley.

Robert had worked at General Motors Buick in Flint for many years.

Mr. Markley had lived in the Branch County area since 1990. He enjoyed small engine repair, fishing, hunting and woodworking.

He married Sally Stowell on Nov. 12, 1953 in Flint. She preceded him in death on April 7, 1996. He was also preceded in death by a son Daniel Markley in 1999 and a grandson Robert Ayers in 2000.

Robert is survived by his son Robert Markley, Jr., of Reno, Nev.; daughters Pamela Zimbicki of Tekonsha, Geneva Gerou of Union City, Patricia Markley of Coldwater; Jonelle Santor and Darcy England, both of Hart, Mich.; sister Margaret Camp of East Tawas, Mich.; 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2003 at 5 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home, Coldwater. Rev. Terry Tomlinson from the Coldwater Baptist Church will officiate.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 1, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. prior to the service at Dutcher Funeral Home.

Oris Jackson Grace

OVID TWP. - Oris Jackson Grace, age 76, of Ovid Township, Coldwater Lake, Mich., died Saturday, May 31, 2003 at his residence.

Oris was born Dec. 9, 1926 in Telfair County, Helena, Georgia, to Arthur and Gladys (Fincher) Grace.

Mr. Grace was a retired tool & die maker, last working for Bronson Specialties in Bronson, Mich.

Oris served in WWII from March of 1944 to May 1946 with the 6th Marine Division of the U.S.M.C. and in the Korean Conflict from December 1950 to May 1951 with the 1st Marine Division of the U.S.M.C.

He married Elizabeth Heitz in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Coldwater on July 7, 1973.

She survives.

Oris was a resident of the Coldwater Lake area for over 30 years, coming here from California.

He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, the 6th Marine Division, Coldwater Lake Association, Branch County Conservation Club and the National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, was an avid reader, national and international traveler, loyal Marine and especially loved lake activities and trophy hunting.

Mr. Grace was preceded in death by sons Brian Grace and Patrick Grace, his parents and sister Dorothy Grace Hearn.

Besides his wife Elizabeth, Oris is survived by three sons Michael Grace of Tifton, Ga., Christopher Grace of Fife Lake, Mich. and Timothy Grace of Melbourne, Fla.; daughter Kathleen Grace of Americus, Ga. and adopted daughter Kimberly (Mike) Wing of Burlington, Mich.; Goddaughter Yadira Marroquin Perez of Guatemala; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 2, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dutcher Funeral Home, Coldwater, where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at St. Charles Borromeo Church at 11 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Brian Stanley officiating.

Interment will follow in Wilson cemetery, in Ovid Township, Mich., with military honors provided by the American Legion #52 Drill Team of Coldwater.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions may wish to consider the St. Joseph Indian School.

Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Lucille E. Smith

STURGIS - Lucille E. Smith, 84, of Sturgis, died Sunday, June 1, 2003 at the Sturgis Hospital. Back to top

Lucille was born June 8, 1918 in Greensboro, N.C., to Mattie Bullyboy.

Lucille had been a Sturgis resident since 1946, coming from North Carolina.

On Nov. 7, 1936 she married Joseph W. Smith in Greensboro, N.C. He died on May 28, 1988.

In 1977 Lucille retired from the M&R Company in Sturgis (now known as Ross Laboratories) after 22 years of dedicated employment.

She was a Life Member of the Jack Johnston Chapter #88 D.A.V. Auxiliary. Lucille was also a member of the Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW Auxiliary and the Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid Notre Dame Football fan and loved time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Joan and Jerry Darby and Sue and Charles Marchand, both of Sturgis, and Louise and Maurice Pippenger of Bronson; daughter-in-law Carol Smith of Sturgis; 10 grandchildren and their spouses Curt and Denise Smith of Sturgis, Bob Pranga, II of West Hollywood, Calif., Shelly and Jim Shultz of Granger, Ind., Tammy Adams of Palm Dale, Calif., Nancy and Arnie Flowers, Thayma and Bret Lutz, Scott Marchand, Joseph Marchand, Robin and Gary Tilden and Breanna Kesslar, all of Sturgis, Doug and Louann Pippenger of Henderson, Nev., and Dennis Pippenger of Santa Monica, Calif.; six step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; one niece; one nephew and special friends Lyla and Art Fox of Sturgis.

Her mother, husband, son George Smith, sisters Mozelle Coaltrane and Lottie Bullyboy and brother George Bullyboy, preceded her in death.

The family will receive friends at the Hackman-Fogelsong Funeral Home of Sturgis today, Monday, June 2, 2003, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Lucille E. Smith will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at the funeral home. The Rev. Keith Treman of the First United Methodist Church of Sturgis will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn cemetery in Sturgis.

The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Smith's memory consider the Logan Center in South Bend, Ind., or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
