Owen C. Marquette
Owen C. Marquette, 74, of Kalamazoo, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001.
He was born in Coldwater July 16, 1927, and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1945. He was the son of the late Oral C. Marquette and the late Imo (Ash) Marquette.Following graduation, he served in the United States Navy for four years. After completing his enlistment, he attended the University of Denver, where he earned a B.A. in Business Administration. He is an alumnus of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.Mr. Marquette served for more than 20 years as the manager of the printing division for Ihling Bros. Everard and Company and was most recently employed at Premiere Printing Corporation in Plainwell.He was an active and distinguished member of Kalamazoo Anchor Lodge #22 F&AM, the York and Scottish Rite, and the Shrine. Mr. Marquette served as presiding officer for many of the Masonic associations of which he had been a member. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and Red Arrow Post #1527 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.Mr. Marquette is survived by his former wives, Shirley (Haller) Combs and Joanne Avriett. Also surviving are his son, David and his wife Barbara of Bellevue; his daughter, Debra, of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His son, Daryl Owen Marquette, preceded him in death.A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 247 W. Lovell St., Kalamazoo, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. C. Mark Rutenbar. A luncheon will follow at the Masonic Temple, 5527 Parkview, Kalamazoo.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America or the Alzheimer's Association of America. The Cremation Society of Michigan is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jean Leaders, 77, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, April 7, 2008, at the Community Hospital & Wellness Center in Montpelier Ohio. She was born January 30, 1931 in Henry County, Ohio to Richard and Leone (Cruey) Engel. She was married November 22, 1947 to Henry R. Leaders and he preceded her in death October 24, 1983.
Betty and her husband were the former owners of Leaders Wood Products. She was a member and Past Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale, a volunteer at Hillsdale Community Health Center and a Physical Therapy Aide.
Betty is survived by a daughter, Judy (Paul) Vasquez of Pioneer, Ohio; two sons, Kenneth R. (Catherine) Leaders of Cooper Landing, Alaska, and Daniel (Marlene) Leaders of Hillsdale; a sister-in-law, Carol (Roy) Warne of Ontario, Canada; three brothers, Kendol (Barbara) Engel of Lake Worth, Florida, Roger (Joyce) Engel of Montpelier, Ohio and Larry (Charlene) Engel of Defiance, Ohio; eight grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband and parents, she was prceded in death by two grandsons, Brian Leaders and Michael Vasquez, and a brother Byron.
Funeral Services for Betty J. Leaders will be Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Rev. Patti Beckman officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Cambria cemetery #2 in Cambria Township. The family will receive friends for visitation Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elinor J. Webster
Elinor J. Webster, 78, of St. Petersburg, Fla., the former Elinor Jane Stickan, died Sept. 24, 2001.
She was born Jan. 10, 1923, in Ovid Twp., the daughter of Henry and Flora (McNitt) Stickan. She married Jean H. Webster on Feb. 7, 1943, at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Elinor was valedictorian of her Coldwater High School graduating class in 1939. She earned her B.A. degree and secondary teaching certificate from Kalamazoo College in 1943. She and Dr. Webster moved frequently during the early years of their marriage. She worked for Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, Mich.
Jean served in the Navy during World War II, and Elinor worked as "Rosie the Riveter" in a factory near LaJolla, Calif. As Jean pursued his medical studies, the family lived in Madison, Wisc., Ann Arbor, Mich., New Orleans, La., Austin, Texas, and Virginia.
Much of Elinor's time was spent raising her six children. Her hobbies included gardening, knitting, sewing, reading and corresponding with her eight lifetime college friends. In 1956, the family moved to Petoskey, Mich., where Dr. Webster worked as a pathologist at the Burns Clinic. They remained there until 1996, when they moved to St. Petersburg, Fla.
Elinor is survived by her children, Thomas J. Webster of Petoskey, Mich., Stephen D. Webster of Harbor Springs, Mich., Susan E. Waugh of Naples, Fla., Michael J. Webster and Andrew J. Webster, both of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Joel N. Webster of Interlochen, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Virginia A. Stickan of Charlotte, N.C.
Her husband preceded her in death on May 24, 2000.
She will be dearly missed by her family, cousins and friends. She is buried in Sunnyside cemetery in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the side of her husband.
Isabelle Leonard
Isabelle Leonard of Coldwater Lake, Mich., died at the home of her daughter, Kathleen Foley, in Novato, Calif., on Oct. 11, 2001. The native of Paulding County, Ohio, was 92.
Mrs. Leonard was born to Nancy Jane and Clarence Donley in the family log cabin near Oakwood on Feb. 5, 1909. She married Harold E. Leonard of Bryan, Ohio, on March 24, 1934. The couple worked for the Aro Corporation in Bryan for many years.
Surviving are her three children, Coulleen Kreg of Hicksville, Ohio, Donald Leonard of Ney, Ohio, and Kathleen Foley. She also leaves six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Leonard will be buried in Lester cemetery in Algansee Township, Mich. beside her beloved husband of 63 years, who preceded her in death in 1997. A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by the Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
Thomas Edward Harris
Thomas Edward Harris, 42, of Albion, Mich., died Oct. 21, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 17, 1959, in Albion to James Ronald Harris and Layola Jane Hutchins. He has lived in the Tri-County area most of his life. He worked for various places of business, including Angola Coach in Angola, Ind.
He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on cars and working home construction.
He is survived by a son, Jason Harris of Coldwater; six brothers, Gary Harris of Jackson, Wes (Nancy) Harris of Homer, Steve (Kathy) Harris of Concord, Mich., Phillip Harris of Albion, Neil "Ray" (Lorrie) Harris of Tekonsha and Bert (Deborah) Harris of Coldwater; and four sisters, Judy (Sid) Avery of Bronson, Linda (Jay) Neusbaum of Hodunk, Connie Harris of Tennessee and Gail (Daryl) Shoemaker of Angola, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at the Albion Chapel of the Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Girard, Mich.

Beulah M. Gruner
COLDWATER - Beulah M. Gruner, 88, of Coldwater died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at The Laurels of Coldwater.
Mrs. Gruner was born July 25, 1913 in Haviland, Ohio, to Joshua and Maude (Evans) Harvey. She was a homemaker and had formerly worked for Branch's making slipcovers for furniture.Beulah had been a resident of the Branch County area for most of her life. She had spent the winter months in Naples, Fla. since 1972. She belonged to the Centennial Reading Circle and Gray Ladies Aide, both of Coldwater. Mrs. Gruner thoroughly enjoyed sewing and loved to make afghans.She married Karl W. Gruner on Nov. 8, 1933 in Coldwater. He preceded her in death in 1991. Others to precede her in death include five sisters and two brothers.Survivors include sons Karlton (Donna) Gruner and Kurtiss (Diana) Gruner, all of Coldwater; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; and a sister Grace Nighswander of Tecumseh.Visitation will be held Friday, May 31, 2002 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, June 1, 2002 from noon to 1 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home, Coldwater.A service will be held Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home. Bice, 82, formerly of Quincy and Hillsdale, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.Mr. Bice was born Feb. 2, 1920 in Palmyra, Mich. to Leonard and Bertha (Simpson) Bice. He retired in 1977 as Chief of Police in Quincy after 17 years of service. He married Bonnie Jean Stump in 1943. She preceded him in death in 1989. In 1991, he married Jessie Kunkle. She survives.Other survivors are one daughter Karen and Brad Rootes of Coldwater; one son Dennis and Vicki Bice of Coldwater; four step-children Jim and Linda Kunkle of Allen, Brenda and Al Wheeler of Reading, Bonnie Seely of Quincy and Bob Kunkle of Quincy; two sisters Dortheda Beach of Morenci and Eleanor Fedder of Saginaw; three brothers Lloyd and Donna Bice of Clayton, John and Angel Bice of Adrian, and Jerry and Lil Bice of Tipton; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by one daughter Judith Cramer, four brothers and three sisters.A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2002 at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy. Interment will follow at Lakeview cemetery.Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday until the time of the service.
Charles L. Curry
Charles L. Curry, 77, of Hillsdale, Mich., passed away Thursday, May 30, 2002, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center.
He was born in Tecumseh, Mich., on March 9, 1925, to Lewis and Leona "Peg" Reinhart (Cornwell) Curry.
Charles was a nursing supervisor at the Regional Center in Coldwater until his retirement in 1989. He was a graduate of Osseo High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 50-year member of the American Legion, as well as a member of the Navy Memorial.
On Dec. 27, 1964, he married Mary Broderick, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Patricia Miller of Hanover and Bridgette (Jamie) Bowerman of Quincy; a son, Charles G. Curry of Jackson; a half-sister, Patricia Silcot of Brooklyn; and six grandchildren, Andrea and Joseph Konopka, Charles Curry II, Crystal and Ashley Miller, and Samuel and Megan Bowerman.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services for Charles will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Rev. Mark Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at the Lakeview cemetery in Hillsdale. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Carl W. Pavey, 59, of Pinellas Park, Florida, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was born July 3, 1948 in Hillsdale to Robert & Louise (Spence) Pavey, they survive in Jonesville.
Carl was a C & C machine programmer, a graduate of Hillsdale High School and had resided in Chicago and Florida. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam era and was a member of the V.F.W.
Surviving besides his parents, Bob and Louise of Jonesville are two daughters, Catherine (Jason) Preuss of Portage and Kelly Pavey of Kalamazoo; two grandchildren, Deidra Preuss and Sadie Aumack; two sisters, Sandy (Jerry) Bigelow of Jonesville and Connie (Khodr) Hadba of Beirut, Lebanon.
He was preceded in death by his brother Donald in 2006.
Funeral services for Carl Pavey will be Friday, April 11, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville with Minister Terry Stoddard officiating. Interment will take place at Sunset View cemetery in Jonesville. The family will receive friends for visitation Thursday from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Iva M. Williamson
Iva M. Williamson, 86, formerly of Fulton, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater.
Iva was born in Wasepi, Mich., on Dec. 30, 1915, the daughter of the late William and Pearl (Stevens) Follin. The family moved to Kalamazoo, where she attended school. At the age of 16, she played with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. She and her brother, Melvin, also played for local dances.She was married to George Williamson in Kalamazoo on March 26, 1934. The music continued when they moved to a farm near Fulton, where they raised seven children. Surviving are 6 sons, Billy and wife Marjorie of Fulton, Jerry and wife Marjory of Mendon, Thomas and wife Linda of Merkel, Texas, and David and wife Diana, Daniel and wife Barbara and Michael and wife Marilyn, all of Battle Creek; a daughter, Beckey Knowles and husband Terry of Coldwater; 25 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, on Sept. 13, 1988; her step-father, William Ketchbaw; and 2 brothers, Melvin and Lyle Follin.Iva enjoyed flower gardening, embroidery, playing piano, garage sales and spending time with her family. She attended the Wakeshma Brethren Church and the Indian Mission near Athens. Iva moved to Maple Lawn in August of 2000, where she made many friends, loved the staff and enjoyed the many activities.The family will receive friends Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Sparks officiating. Burial will be in North Fulton cemetery. Memorial gifts may be directed to either the Alzheimer's Association or the Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility Activity Fund.
Russell J. Matthews
FREMONT, Ind. - Russell J. Matthews, 89, of Snow Lake, Fremont, Ind., died Oct. 2, 2002 at his home at Snow Lake, Fremont.
Mr. Matthews was born Sept. 5, 1913 in Toledo, Ohio. He married Grace (Evans) on June 5, 1937.
They were married 65 years. She survives.Mr. Matthews served 25 years as a Toledo Firefighter.
He was managing director of the Toledo Firefighters' Federal Credit Union from its inception in 1950 to 1978.
He was a sportsman and fisherman.
He was the director of the West Toledo Junior Athletic League and volunteered as a Red Cross First Aid Instructor for 50 years, both in Toledo and Angola.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Robinson Locke Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Zenobia and Mizpah Temples and the Pokagon Shrine Club.
Russ and his wife Grace started building their home on Snow Lake in 1957 and had been retired there for 24 years.
Survivors include his wife Grace (Evans) Matthews; one son Kent Matthews; one daughter Leslie Matthews; one grandson Thomas J. Swigart; one brother Carroll Matthews; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law Betty and Chester Mauch; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit the family at the Russell & Grace Matthews Home on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Snow Lake, Fremont, Ind.
All times are Indiana time.Services were held on Monday in Toledo, Ohio.

Ira W. Barrington
HILLSDALE - Ira W. Barrington, 86, of Hillsdale, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.
Mr. Barrington was born Sept. 6, 1916 in Calhoun County to Lester and Grace (Elliott) Barrington.
Mr. Barrington was a factory worker. He served in the Army during World War II. He lived most of his life in Jackson and Hillsdale counties and was a member of the American Legion in Hillsdale.
He is survived by his sisters Freida Dunlap, Leota Britton, both of Hillsdale, and Florentine Norton of Coldwater; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a service being held at 6:30 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Burial will be at Frontier cemetery in Woodbridge Township.
Memorials may be made to Hillsdale County Senior Center.
John E. Swain
LANSING - John E. Swain of Lansing, World War II vet, retired teacher and coach, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002.
Mr. Swain is survived by his wife Cherie; one daughter Shila (Bill) Boes of Coldwater; three sons John (Marsha) of Williamston, Jordon of North Carolina and Jason of Ann Arbor; two brothers Myles (Sylvia) of North Carolina and Keith (Marsha) of Ohio; five granddaughters; one great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Born Sept. 24, 1924 in Coldwater, he graduated from Quincy High School, enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and served on board the USS Coral Sea. He earned a BS degree from Hillsdale College and a MA from Eastern Michigan University.
He taught and coached at Britton-Macon, Blissfield, Milan and Howell schools. He was principal at Webberville High School. After retiring, he continued to volunteer as a football and baseball coach for various community teams in Hillsdale, Reading, Addison and DeWitt.
He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and DAV.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Palmer-Bush Delta Chapel, 6020 W. Saginaw Highway, Lansing.
