Dollie D. Miller

ANGOLA, Ind. – Dollie D. Miller, 97, of Angola, Ind., formerly of Montgomery and also of Brockville Commons, Fremont, Ind., died Monday, June 5, 2000 at Lakeland Nursing Center, Angola, Ind.

Mrs. Miller was born March 30, 1903 in Decatur, Ind. to Shannon and Nannie (Johnson) Miller. She worked at the family farm on Duguid Road all of her life.

There are no immediate survivors. Several cousins survive.

She was preceded in death by one brother Forrest Miller and both parents.

There will be no visitation.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, June 8, 2000 at 10 a.m. at Ray cemetery, Fremont, Ind. Rev. Earl Armstrong will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Arrangements are by Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind.

Howard M. Doherty

JACKSON – Howard M. Doherty, age 88, of Jackson, passed away under the loving care of his daughter and grandson on Monday, June 5, 2000.

Mr. Doherty was preceded in death by his wife Frances.

He was retired as a tool and die maker from Clark Equipment and was an avid hunter and fisherman, as well as a member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by one daughter Judy Hadley of Jackson; four grandchildren Jody (Rob) Lewis of Coldwater, James Hadley IV of Horton, Jonathon Hadley of Mosherville and Jack Hadley of Jackson; nine great-grandchildren; one brother Floyd Doherty of Jackson; one sister-in-law Margaret Dreese of Jackson; one nephew and four nieces.

Funeral services will be held at the Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home, Jackson, on Thursday, June 8, 2000 at 11 a.m. Rev. James Troust will officiate.

Burial will take place at Woodland cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Leona B. Miller

COLDWATER – Leona B. Miller, age 76, of Coldwater, formerly of Churubusco, Ind. died 9:30 a.m., Sunday, June 4, 2000 in her residence.

She was a homemaker, born in LaGrange County, Ind. on Feb. 21, 1924, to Charles Rhinesmith and Bessie Likes Rhinesmith.

She attended the Baptists Church in Churubusco, Ind. and the Missionary Church in Coldwater.

She is survived by her husband Rollin Miller, Sr. of Coldwater; three daughters Judy and her husband Don Hawver of Butler, Ind., Sandra and her husband Jerry Boren of Auburn, Ind. and Ronda and her husband Errol Creech of Churubusco, Ind.; four sons, Rollin Jr. and his wife Charlene of Coldwater, Mike and his wife Kathy of Churubusco, Ind., Terry and his wife Jeanine of Coldwater, and Steve and his wife Sandra of Churubusco, Ind.; and daughter-in-law Joyce Miller of Garrett, Ind. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sons Jack and Bruce, one daughter Lynette, three brothers and two sisters.

Services will be held Wednesday, June 7, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Orr Funeral Home, 3789 North U.S. 33, Churubusco, Ind. Burial will follow at the Christian Chapel cemetery in Merriam.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2000 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Anita Eloise Fox Ritsema Dotson

LEROY TWP. – Anita Eloise Fox Ritsema Dotson, 65, of Leroy Township, died Monday, June 5, 2000 at Alamo Nursing Home in Kalamazoo County.

She was born in Graysville, Tenn. to Geneva Jo (McGhee) and Arnim L. Fox, Sr., on July 13, 1934. After graduating from Athens High School and Wright Beauty Academy, she became an instructor at Wrights.

She married Walter Lovin on July 12, 1953 in Fulton. He preceded her in death on October of 1956. On March 4, 1957, she married Sam Ritsema in Leroy Township. Sam preceded her in death. On March 3, 1967, she married Clea Dotson in Joliet, Ill. Clea also preceded her in death.

She is survived by Anita Jo Ritsema Kush of Chicago Heights, Ill.; Angela Joy Dotson Sharpsteen of Battle Creek and one grandson and one granddaughter, one brother and one niece.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 6, 2000 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Spencer Family Funeral Home in Athens.

Services will be held Wednesday, June 7, 2000 at 1 p.m. with Rev. David Mackaluso officiating.

Interment will be at the north Fulton cemetery.

Harold L. Lambright
April 16, 1927 - April 5, 2008

Harold L. Lambright, 80, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2008, at his home. He was born April 16, 1927 in Hillsdale to Clayton & Eliza (Bemis) Lambright. He was formerly married to Joyce Burton and she preceded him in death in 1997.

Harold was a retired car salesman and was the caretaker at Extra Space Storage on Carleton Rd. in Hillsdale. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII.

Surviving are daughters, Tina (Jeff) Balcom, Hillsdale and Tammy (Dave) Pawlowski, Jonesville; sons, Richard Lambright, Hillsdale and Dean (Vie) Lambright, Adrian; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Virginia (Ed) Olyarnyk, Florida; brothers, George (Pat) Lambright, Leonard (Nancy) Lambright, Jerry (Sharon) Lambright, all of Hillsdale, Robert (Sandy) Lambright, Allen and Gary (Sandy) Lambright, Jonesville.

He was precede in death by his parents, wife, a son Rex and eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Harold Lambright will be Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Brian Nutter officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the Lakeview cemetery in Hillsdale. The family will receive friends for visitation Tuesday from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Betty J. Walkup

COLDWATER – Betty J. Walkup, 71, of Coldwater died Sunday, June 4, 2000 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.

Mrs. Walkup was born Oct. 20, 1928 in Coldwater to Clarence and Leola (Donihue) Clark.

Mrs. Walkup was District Court Magistrate and Court Administrator from 1969 until she retired in 1995. Previous to that she served in the Coldwater Municipal Court.

Mrs. Walkup was a lifelong resident of the Branch County area. She graduated from Coldwater High School with the Class of 1946, and received an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice in 1977. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, and a member, past president and past district director of the Coldwater Exchange Club. She was a member and past president of the Michigan Magistrate Association; a member and past president of the Michigan Court Administration; and a member of the Elks, as well as the American Legion, Eagles and Moose auxiliaries. She was a former member of Altrusa and a former chairperson of the Branch County Cancer Society. Mrs. Walkup was the only person to ever be awarded the Liberty Bell Award twice, by the Branch County Bar Association. During her years with the court she married over 2,000 couples.

She married Arnold K. Walkup on Oct. 28, 1950. He preceded her in death in February of 1988.

Survivors include her son William Scott Walkup of Coldwater; daughters and sons-in-law Deborah and Patrick Byrne of Williamston and Jamice and Thomas Guise of Bloomfield Hills; seven grandchildren, Michael Byrne, Katie Byrne, Ryan Walkup, Sara Walkup, James Walkup, Libby Guise and Mac Guise; and special friends Al Woods and Sally Gates, both of Coldwater.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 6, 2000 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dutcher Funeral Home, Coldwater.

A service will be held Wednesday, June 7, 2000 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Rev. Andrew Lombardo will officiate.

Burial will take place at Oak Grove cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Coldwater Community Cancer Center.

Karen Barden Pennington Cox
August 16, 1942 - April 24, 2008

Karen Barden Pennington Cox passed from this world on April 24, 2008, at her home in Morenci, Michigan. She is survived by her husband of 27 years Charles Cox, three sons Timothy Pennington (Amy), Michael Pennington (Denise), and William Pennington ( Sarah) and her parents, Boyd and Alice Barden. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren Jacob and Lucas Pennington; Ashleigh, Ben, Tess, Austin and Robert Pennington; and Nicholas, Brooke, Amanda, and Kristen Pennington as well as two sisters, Arlene Wilson and Bette Hudnutt. She was preceded in death by a baby daughter, Cindy Pennington and a baby brother Jackie Barden.

Karen grew up on the family farm outside of Lyons. She enjoyed working outside and with the animals and helping her dad with the milk route.

She married Charlie Cox in 1980, and they lived in the Lyons area for 9 years. In 1989, they moved to the Houghton Lake area and lived there for 13 years. Karen enjoyed living there and made many friends. She worked at Hackers' Shop for many years while they were there. In 2003, they decided to move back to the Lyons area and her remaining years were spent in this area rejoining the lives of family and friends. During that time she worked at Dexter's in Adrian, Michigan. Her sisters particularly treasure the many dinners they had together reminiscing about their childhood and keeping current with each other's families. Karen & Charlie spent many hours in the American Legion in Morenci working alongside their many friends.

Karen is remembered by friends and family as a caring and loving person. Her boys were the loves of her life. She enjoyed taking care of them and later helping with their families. Karen loved sewing and making presents for her family and friends and these gifts from Karen as well as memories of her will fill some of the void she has left in many hearts and lives.

Karen bravely battled cancer for 9 months. The family would like to thank all the people of Hospice of Lenawee for caring for Karen during her final days. Those planning on an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a hospice organization of their choice.

Karen's family asks that you join them in celebrating her life with a memorial service on Sunday, May 4, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at the Morenci American Legion, a luncheon will follow the service. A memory book will be available for everyone to share their memories for her family to enjoy.

Arrangements were through the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci, Michigan.

Tracie L. Culy

TUCSON, Ariz. – Tracie L. Culy of Tucson, Ariz., passed away Friday, June 2, 2000.

Tracie was born Feb. 4, 1966 in Coldwater and grew up in Traverse City and Tucson.

A graduate of the University of Arizona, she was a graphic artist in Tucson.

Tracie is survived by her mother Holly McKibben of Tucson; her father Fred Culy III of Coldwater; grandparents Fred and Dorothy Culy of Quincy; aunts and uncles including Christine and Allan Forrister and Jeffery and Kathryn Culy of Coldwater; and several cousins.

A funeral will be held in Tucson, with interment later in Coldwater.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility.

Mrs. Rolene Rilla (Rifenburgh) Rohrer

ATHENS – Mrs. Rolene Rilla (Rifenburgh) Rohrer, age 64, of Athens passed away Sunday, June 4, 2000 at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater.

Rolene was born Sept. 22, 1935 in Coldwater to Rolland C. Rifenburgh and Gladys E. (Paul) Rifenburgh. She graduated from Bronson High School in 1953. She married Melvin B. Rohrer on Feb. 12, 1954 in Colon at the Colon Lutheran Church.

She was a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Union City.

She is survived by three daughters Julie A. Clark of Quincy, Marlene M. Rohrer of Sherwood and Carla K. Hardin of Sherwood; two sons James A. Rohrer of Sherwood and Roland B. Rohrer of Athens; 17 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; sisters Mrs. Patricia Hall of Mongo, Ind., Mrs. Dixie Rice of Bronson, Mrs. Bonnie Yoder of Sturgis and Mrs. Marilyn Melendy of Coldwater.

Rolene was preceded in death by her husband Melvin in 1989. She was also preceded in death by her grandson Kenneth in 1998, her sister Shirley Copkenspager in 1993, and a brother Junior.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother in every way.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 7, 2000 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Spencer Family Funeral Home in Athens.

Services will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2000 at 1 p.m. with Rev. David Dodge of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Union City officiating. Interment will be at the Sherwood cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Rolene R. Rohrer Memorial Fund.

Jeffrey L. Schmidt
November 21, 1964 - April 30, 2008

Jeffrey L. Schmidt, age 43, of Morenci passed away Wednesday, April 30, at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. He was born November 21, 1964, in Morenci the son of Richard and Sharon (Simpkins) Schmidt.

Until recently, Jeff had been employed at Tenneco Automotive in Litchfield, Michigan and he graduated from Morenci High School in 1983.

Surviving Jeff besides his parents Richard and Sharon Schmidt of Morenci, are his children, Karley Michelle and Jericha Megan Schmidt, his children's mother, Kristi Schmidt all of Morenci; two brothers, Joseph (Barbara) Schmidt of Angola, Indiana and Jason (Amy) Schmidt of Morenci; five nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Memorial services for Jeff will be Monday, May 5, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with Pastor Darren Lemmon officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy may make memorial contributions to Hope House of Jonesville.

Marilyn J. Kellogg

COLDWATER – Marilyn J. Kellogg, 62, of Coldwater died Monday, June 5, 2000 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.

Mrs. Kellogg was born July 13, 1937 in Coldwater to John and Ruth (Hutchins) Brauker. She married Jack Kellogg on June 22, 1957 in Union City.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coldwater, a member of the Ruth Circle of the church, and was a member of the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club. She was also very active in 4-H in Branch County for many years. She also was the 4-H horse superintendent at the Branch County 4-H Fair for five years.

She worked at Western Rubber in Fremont, Ind. in the customer service department. She currently was volunteering at the MSU Branch County Extension Office.

Survivors include her husband Jack; two daughters Juli (Brent) Hanshaw of Coldwater and Jodi Kellogg of Coldwater; grandson Kyle Hanshaw of Coldwater; mother Ruth Brauker of Union City; sister Joyce (Joe) Hoffdahl of Olivet; and two brothers Marlin (Jackie) Brauker of Union City and Edwin (Judy) Brauker of Paragould, Ark.

Friends may call for visitation from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, 2000 at the Gillespie Funeral Home, Coldwater.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Coldwater. Rev. Andrew Lombardo will officiate.

Interment will take place at Evergreen cemetery, Girard.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club, Branch County 4-H Foundation or the American Heart Association.

James R. Elliott

TECUMSEH – James R. Elliott, age 89, of Tecumseh died Wednesday, July 5, 2000 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Mr. Elliott was born Feb. 12, 1911 in Coldwater to James and Lillian (Clark) Elliott. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1928 and from Albion College in 1932. On July 5, 1937, he married Opal Rowe in Ann Arbor.

He moved to Tecumseh in 1937 and began his long career at the Tecumseh Products Company in the Engineering Department. He retired in 1974 and continued living in Tecumseh while spending several winters in Florida. He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, Tecumseh, having served as a Trustee and Elder.

James is survived by his wife Opal; three sons John (Jean) Elliott of Ft. Wayne, Ind. and his twin brother David (Mary) Elliott of Midland, and Tom (Karen) Elliott of Birmingham; and four grandsons.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 8, 2000 at the First Presbyterian Church, Tecumseh, with Rev. Richard Mortimer officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove cemetery in Coldwater.

Visitation will be from noon until the time of the service on Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Tecumseh.

Purse Funeral Home of Tecumseh is in charge of arrangements.

Rickie D. Parker

ATHENS – Rickie D. Parker, 51, of Athens died suddenly Monday, July 3, 2000 at Vencor Hospital in LaGrange, Ind.

Mr. Parker was born April 22, 1949 in Hillsdale to Rex and Jeanette (Boatman) Parker.

Mr. Parker worked in the construction business. He formerly was employed by The Coachman Company in LaGrange, Ind. and Healthsouth in Florida.

Mr. Parker lived in the Coldwater area most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant. He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in Germany. Mr. Parker was a member of Sons of American Legion #210 and the American Legion Post #40, both in Middlebury, Ind. and The Wolverine Post #360 in Reading. He was also a member of the North American Hunting Club.

He is survived by his mother Jeanette Parker of Athens; sisters Robin Shonk of Largo, Fla. and Rhonda Brinkman of Union City and former wife Debbie Quimby Parker of Kalamazoo.

He was preceded in death by his father Rex Parker in 1981 and brother Randy Parker in 1974.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 6, 2000 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dutcher Funeral Home, Coldwater.

A service will be held Friday, July 7, 2000 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Fred Goebert of Factoryville Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will take place at Fisher Hill cemetery, Algansee Township.

Memorials may be made to the family.
