Mary S. Radford

Bronson - Mary S. Radford, age 97, of Bronson, died Friday, April 6, 2001 at the Laurels of Coldwater where she had ben admitted the previous evening. She had been in failing health.

Mary Susan Adams was born February 29, 1904 in Hardin County, Iowa, daughter of Emory B. and Rosalie (Chance) Adams. After a few years, the family moved to Wisconsin, leaving there to live on a farm near Motley, Minnesota. After several years, Mr. Adams sold the Minnesota property and bought a farm near Athens, Michigan, the family moving there in 1920.

Mary was a 1922 graduate of Athens High School, then earned a teaching certificate at Western Michigan Normal School in Kalamazoo and taught in Calhoun County three years.

On December 25, 1926, Mary was united in marriage to Elmer M. Radford, also of Athens. They lived in Bronson sine 1926. with several winters spent in Arizona after retirement.

Mary was active in Bronson's PTA and Band Booster's Club, Bronson's Community Fair, and was past president of the Women's League. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bronson, singing in the choir for many years and a member of the Isabel Secor's Women's Choral Group.

Mary worked diligently on the committee to get a hospital built in Coldwater and when the Branch County Community Health Center became a reality in 1939, she joined a group of ladies who spent one afternoon a week doing hospital mending.

When World War II began, Mary became a Navy Inspector at the L. A. Darling plant until war's end. She then worked in Darling's order department until her retirement when the company moved to Arkansas in 1967.

She enjoyed gardenning, traveling, photography and verse writing.

Survivors include her daughter Mrs. Robert (Helyn) Hillyer of Decatur, MI who had been caring for her at her home in Bronson since 1996; her son and daughetr-in-law, Robert J. and Wilma Radford of Clearwater, FL; six granchildren, Ed Hillyer of Dorr, MI,, Joe Hillyer of Decatur, MI, Mari Obninsky serving with the US Navy in Hawaii, Warren Obnisky of San Raphel, CA and Andrew and Duncan Shortridge living in England; great grandchildren, Heather and Matthew Hillyer of Dorr, MI, Joshua and Michele Hillyer of Decatur, MI and Edward, William, Jessica and Fredrick Shortridge all of England and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer in 1993 and three sisters.

According to her wishes, cremation was arranged by the Kolcz Funeral Home. A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Mary S. Radford will held at 2 Pm Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Bronson with Rev. Mona Joslyn officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Churh of Bronson. Envelopes are available at the Kolcz Funeral Home.

A private graveside service and burial of ashes in the Leroy Congregational cemetery, Calhoun County will be held at a later date.

Gwendolyn Lemoine Scott

Bronson - Gwendolyn Lamoine Scott, age 77, of Bronson, died Monday, September 24, 2001 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo following a short illness.

She was born April 26, 1924 in Bronson, daughter of L M and Rolene (Vorce) Bidwell and graduated from Bronson High School in 1941 where she was Drum Majorette during her high school years. After high school, Lamoine married Francis Bobay. He was killed in World War 2.

She then married Joseph W. Guiff. They lived together in Syracuse, Indiana and Lamoine worked for and retired from Dana Weatherhead Corp after 23 years of service. Joe died in 1963.

Lamoine then married Chester Scott on September 26, 1974 and the couple moved to Harrison, Michigan for 24 years moving back to Bronson in May, 2001

Lamoine enjoyed life, especially walking, riding snowmobiles,fishing, and crafts. She liked to crochet afghans and rugs.

Surviving are her husband Chester "scotty" Scott; her son and daughter-in-law, Maurice "Maurie" and Sue Guiff of Warsaw, IN; step-son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Renee Scott and step-son Gerald Scott all of Syracuse, IN; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Arlie Bidwell of Colon and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and John Champion of Bronson and Sylvia and Bill Green of Elkhart, IN. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Funeral Services celebrating the life of Gwendolyn Lamoine Scott will be held at 10 AM (Michigan time) Friday, September 28, 2001 at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. Interment will follow in Oakwood cemetery, Warsaw, Indiana at 11:30 AM (Indiana time)

The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 2 - 8 PM Thursday, September 27, 2001 where Memorial Donations may be made to the Bronson Community Foundation.

September 21, 1918 - April 1, 2008

Pearl G. White, 89, of Litchfield, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born September 21, 1918 in Hillsdale to James & Gladys (Yoakum) Stone. She was married July 7, 1950 to Richard White and he preceded her in death March 10, 1970.

Pearl retired from the Market House and was a member of the Liberty Bible Church in Pittsford.

Surviving are daughters, Verlo (Harold) Cool, Roanoke, Virginia, Carol White, Litchfield and Nancy (Walter) Stoddard, Litchfield; sons, Donald LeRoy (Nancy) Barrett, Quincy and Leonard (Sandra) White, Hillsdale; 27 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Sheffer, Pittsford, Margary Ball, Montgomery and Gladys (Willie) Cole, Osseo; brothers, LeRoy Stone, Fayette and James (Emily) Stone, Osseo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Luke Baxter; sisters, Ethel, Inez and Exelle; and a brother Russell.

Funeral services for Pearl White will be Saturday, April 5, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Dr. Samuel Wickard and Pastor Mike Hurlbert officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove cemetery in Jefferson Twp. The family will receive friends for visitation Friday from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to St. Judes Children's Hospital or Gideon Bibles.

Letha M. Myers

Bronson - Letha M. Myers, age 66, of Bronson, died early Thursday, September 13, 2001 at the Community Health Center of Branch County following.

She was born January 30, 1935, daughter of Roscoe and Ruby Bupp and lived most of her life in the Bronson area. She married Donald E. Myers on March 29, 1959 in Sturgis. He died August 2, 1983. Letha retired from Bronson Plating Company after many years of employment. She enjoyed gardenning, playing cards and puzzles.

Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, David and Cindy Myers of Litchfield and Bill and Becky Myers of Bronson; daughter and son-in-law, Leota and Carlon ":Eddie" Rumsey and daughter Ruby Myers all of Bronson; 15 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; her brother Jim Myers of Ohio and sisters, Jan Myers of Orland, IN and Bertha Myers living in England. She was preceded inj death by a granddaughter and two brothers.

Funeral Services celebrating the life of Letha Myers will be held at 1:30 PM Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. Interment will follow in Bronson cemetery.

The family willl receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 5 - 8 PM Tuesday. Memorial Donations may be made to the Oncology Unit at the Community Health Center of Branch County.

Velma L.J. Armstrong

Bronson- Velma Armstrong, age 82, of Bronson, died Monday, December 10, 2001 at Fairview Convalescent Center in Centreville.

She was born May 24, 1919 in Bronson, daughter of George and Goldie (Shaw) Lewis and was a lifelong Bronson resident. She married Albert Armstrong on November 19, 1938 in Angola, Indiana. He died June 28, 1965.

Velma had worked at the former L.A. Darling Co. in Bronson during World War 2, and later at the Theodore Bargeman Company in Coldwater. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Bronson and enjoyed sewing, crocheting and knitting.

Surviving are her daughter Onalee Armstrong of Bronson, daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Floyd West of Angola, Indiana and Lois and Tom Young of Centreville; sons Robert Armstrong of Houston, Texas and Rolland Armstrong of Bronson; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter Sharon Armstrong in 1967, a brother Elwood Lewis and a sister Keitha Lewis.

Funeral Services celebrating the life of Velma Armstrong will be held at 1 PM Friday, December 14, 2001 at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson with Rev. Debra Valentine of the First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow in Bronson cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 6 - 8 PM Thursday. Memorial Donations may be made to the Bronson Food Pantry. Envelopes are available at the Kolcz Funeral Home.

Catherine M. Kosmerick

Bronson - Catherine M. Kosmerick, age 87,. of Bronson, died early Friday morning, May 17, 2002 at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility where she had been staying for the past four days. She had been stricken at home a week earlier.

Catherine was born July 1, 1914 in Batavia Twp., daughter of Thomas and Josephine (Mujta) Ludwick and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. She married Adam Kosmerick on October 15, 1934 at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church. Adam died May 8, 1999.

Catherine was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church , the Rosary Society and the Sacred Heart Society. She was also a member of Local 797 UAW and the AARP. She retired from the Kirsch Company in 1977 after 22 years of service. Prior to that she had also worked at the L.A. Darling Co,. formerly in Bronson and the former Douglas Manufacturing Co., also in Bronson, (now Douglas Autotech).

A very giving lady, Catherine was a volunteer for several charities over many years. She also enjoyed bowling, Bingo, senior dinners, cooking, playing cards and her garden.

Surviving are her daughters, Patricia Theile of Farmington Hills, and Sylvia Weaver of Bronson; 12 Grandchildren; 17 Great Grandchildren; three sisters, Josephine Wotta, Pearl Ludwick and Regina Wielgos all of Bronson and several nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Monday. May 20, 2002 at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Prayers before Mass will be at 10 :30 AM Monday at the Kolcz Funeral Home. Burial will following St. Mary cemetery

Friends may call at the Kolcz Funeral Home anytime Sunday where the Family will be present from 12 - 8 PM Sunday. The Rosary will be recited at 7 PM Sunday at the Funeral Home.

Memorial Donations may be made to St. Mary School. Envelopes are available at the Kolcz Funeral Home.

Teresa I. Briggs

Sherwood - Teresa I. Briggs, age 45, of Sherwood, died late Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at the Community Health Center of Branch County following a long illness.

She was born October 12, 1956 in Coldwater, daughter of Norman and Brenda (Smith) Baker and was a lifelong Branch County resident.

She married Christopher Briggs on October 12, 1974 in Sherwood. He survives. Also surviving are her Mother, Brenda Baker of Sherwood, her sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and Ted Gordon of Coldwater; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernest and Sara Baker and Stephen and Denise Baker, all of Sherwood, and Timothy and Stephanie Baker of Mendon; Grandmothers, Elizabeth Baker of Coldwater and Jay Irene Smith of Fulton and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Teresa graduated from Union City High School in 1974. She was an active member at the Cornerstone Community Church in Colon and loved animals, her family and going to garage sales. She was last employed at the Coldwater Housing Commission as secretary.

Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are by the Kolcz Funeral Home of Bronson.

Teresa's family is planning a Memorial Service at 11 AM Saturday, May 18, at the Cornerstone Community Church in Colon.

Lucille Allice

Coldwater - Lucille Allice, age 97, died August 3, 2002 at Anna's Adult Care in Coldwater. She had been in failing health.

Lucy was born Dec. 5, 1904 in Chicopee, Kansas Territory, daughter of Carlo and Dominica (Pastore) Boggetto. She married Dominic Allice on July 28, 1922 in Levone, (Turin), Italy. He died Oct 3, 1972.

Lucy and Dominic lived a majority of their lives in the Bessemer, Michigan area. She loved to cook Italian meals and desserts. Lucy and Dominic also lived 20 years in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they ran the Allice Tourist Home. They returned to Bessemer in their later years. The past seven years Lucy enjoyed the loving environment provided by Anna's Adult Care in Coldwater.

Survivors include her son-in-law Dr. Ken Youngquist of Bronson, a grandson, Thomas and grand daughter-in-law Marcia (Smoker) Youngquist of West Bloomfield, and three great grandchildren, Tami (Youngquist) Lamerato of Berkley, Kevin Youngquist of Colorado Springs, and Aaron Youngquist of West Bloomfield. Her daughter, Rose (Allice) Youngquist and her brother Charles Boggetto Sr. preceded her in death.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday August 7, 2002 beginning at 10 AM at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson where the Rosary will be recited at 11 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Anna's Adult Care in Coldwater, St. Mary's School in Bronson, or the Branch County Community Health Center Hospice.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 7, 2002, at 12 Noon at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson, with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Interment will be held on Friday August 9, 2002 at the Hillcrest cemetery in Bessemer, Michigan.

Alice C. Schafer

Bronson - Alice C. Schafer, age 88, of Bronson, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at the Battle Creek Health System.

She was born March 30, 1914 in Branch County, daughter of John and Roxanne (Stefanski) Kibiloski and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. She married Ralph Schafer, Sr. in 1936 in Indiana. They divorced several years later.

Alice worked at the former Schafer Distributing Co. in Bronson for many years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Bronson and was a very active member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries in Bronson. She was past President of the American Legion Auxiliary. Alice always made the duck soup for the American Legion for Polish Festival. Even at age 87, she personally made 35 gallons of duck soup.

Alice was involved with every activity of both auxiliaries, including marching in parades and trips to the VA Hospital in Augusta. She also visited her brother in Maple Lawn every Tuesday. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, oil painting and playing the organ. Alice was a charitable lady who would rather do for others and would never seek recognition for her good deeds.

Surviving are her son James Schafer of Bronson, her son and daughter-in-law, Ralph Jr.,. and Carol Schafer of Coldwater; grandchildren, Scott Schafer, Lesley Schafer, Kathy Raymond and Kelly Simmons; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Simmons and Kyle Raymond and her brother Floyd Kibiloski of Coldwater. She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.

Funeral Services celebrating the life of Alice C. Schafer will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson beginning with the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion followed by religious services with the Rev. Debra Valentine of the First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow in Bronson cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 4 - 8 PM Monday, July 29, 2002. Memorial Donations may be made to the Branch County Community Foundation earmarked for use in Bronson. Envelopes are available at the Kolcz Funeral Home.

Richard L. Yesh

Bronson Richard L. Yesh, age 77, of Bronson, died Monday, July 22, 2002 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. He had been in failing health.

Dick was born October 8, 1924 in Bronson, son of John and Anna (Czajkowski) Yesh and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. He was an Army Veteran of World War 2, serving with the 298th Combat Engineers at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. After the war, he married Patricia Fitzgerald on May 29, 1948 in St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson.

Dick worked at the former Bronson Reel Company (later known as Bronson Specialties) from his discharge from the Service until his retirement in 1989 - a total of 44 years. He was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church, a charter member of the VFW Post 5003 in Bronson, a member of the Bronson Reel Amateur Baseball Team, had coached Little League Baseball in Bronson for 13 years, was a proficient fly fisherman, and enjoyed hunting, and fishing. He proudly kept his yard, loved his family and taught each of his sons to hunt and fish.

Dick was also a well known bowler, and had rolled the first 300 game in Bronson. He also bowled several years in the Sturgis Major League from 1952 until his retirement from bowling in 1988.

Surviving are his wife Patricia, daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Kip Adamson of Bronson, sons, Mike Yesh of Coldwater, Brian (Donna Taylor) Yesh, Kevin Yesh and Christopher (Carolyn Barone) Yesh all of Bronson and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Richard L. Yesh will he held at 10 AM Monday, July 29, 2002 at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Arrangements are by the Kolcz Funeral Home of Bronson. There will be no visitation.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Oncology Dept. at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Envelopes are available at the Kolcz Funeral Home.

Lyle Auten

Bronson - Lyle L. Auten, age 87, of Coldwater, formerly of Bronson and Hudson, Michigan, died Friday, December 6, 2002 at the Laurels of Coldwater.

He was born October 4, 1915 in Bronson, son of Charles and daisy (Sharp) Auten. He married Eleanor Nowicki on August 7, 1935 in Bronson, She died in 1964. He then married Erma Fair in 1968 in Hudson, MI. She also preceded him in death. He later married Wanda Rzepka and she survives.

Lyle entered the US Army in 1943 serving in Germany during World War 2, also serving in Korea and Viet Nam, retiring form the Army in 1968.He moved to Hudson after his retirement and worked as maintenance supervisor at Hillsdale College and also at Adrian College, retiring in 1975.

Lyle was one of the oldest members of the former Bronson Community Band. He was a life member of the American Legion, VFW and also the DAV in Hillsdale. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson and a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson.

Surviving are his wife Wanda, son Dennis Auten of Loft Crown Point, S. Carolina, daughter Sandra Benis of Houston TX; step daughters, Betty Myers of Hudson, and Louise Fenter of Evansport, Ohio; step-sons, Victor Nowicki of Indiana , Jerome Rzepka and Craig Rzepka both of Coldwater; nine grandchildren, many step grandchildren and great grandchildren and two sisters, Wilma Sumney of Sturgis and Myrna Fry of Edwardsburg, MI. he was preceded in death by a sister.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery at 11 AM Wednesday, December 11, 2002 with Deacon Gerald Smoker officiating. And full military honors conferred by the Bronson Posts of the American Legion and VFW. Cremation has taken place. Arrangement s are by the Kolcz Funeral Home of Bronson.
