Rachele Morri
COLDWATER — Rachele Morri, 101, of Union City, Mich., died Jan. 14, 2000, at the Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater.
Arrangements were made at the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City, 741-9333.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Clesson “Bud” F. Reynolds, Jr.
COLDWATER – Clesson “Bud” F. Reynolds, Jr., 74, of Coldwater died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.
Mr. Reynolds was born March 3, 1925 to Clesson F. and Louvetta (Kimble) Reynolds in Coldwater.
Mr. Reynolds was a supervisor at Federal-Mogul for 29 years. He was then employed by Swift-Eckrich for 15 years, retiring in 1989.
Mr. Reynolds was a lifelong resident of Branch County. He was past commander of the American Legion Post #52, served for 40 years in the American Legion Service office, and 51 years on the Drill Team. He was Boys State Chairman for Post #52, and the Branch County Veterans Trust Fund Chairman. He was past chef d Gar of 40 et 8. Voiture #396 of Coldwater. He was a member of the UCT of Coldwater. He served in the 81st Wildcat Division in the South Pacific. Mr. Reynolds was responsible for putting the flags on the graves at Oak Grove cemetery for 50 years.
Survivors include his sister Grace Reynolds of Coldwater and several cousins.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Rev. Betty Smith will officiate.
Burial will take place at Oak Grove cemetery.
Memorials may be made to 40 et 8 Nurses Scholarship Fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Helen H. Nelson
BRONSON – Helen H. Nelson, age 84, of Bronson, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.
She was born Dec. 14, 1915 in East Chicago, Ind. to Daniel and Mary (Konkiyo) Gal. She and her brother Joseph were adopted as children by Charles and Sadie Higbee of Salem Center, Ind.
Helen married Russell Nelson on Jan. 3, 1933 in Salem Center, and the couple moved to Bronson in 1936. Russell died in 1966. She worked for over 44 years at the former H.A. Douglas Manufacturing Company (now Douglas Autotech) in Bronson until her retirement.
She was a member of UAW Local 822 and held several offices over the years, then became an active member of the UAW Local 822 retirees. She was also a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson and the Rosary Society. Helen was always known for her willingness and desire to help family and friends, even when that help place a burden on her.
Surviving are her daughter Beverly Marz of Battle Creek; her daughter and son-in-law Betty and Bill Zabonick of Bronson; grandchildren Karen and Bill Hyska and Myra and Daniel Belote of Bronson, Mitchell and Deborah Marz of Battle Creek and Michelle (Marz) Stafford of Dexter; great grandchildren Jenelle, Ryan and Matthew Hyska; Lage and Brandon Marz and Sarah and Garrett Belote.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother, Pearl Firestone, Betty Smith Margaret Powers and Joseph Higbee.
According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000 at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Donald W. Atchison officiating. Interment will follow in Bronson cemetery.
The family will receive friends at a Memorial Gathering from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000 at the Kolcz Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Helen H. Nelson to the Pleasant Homes Division of the Bronson Housing Commission. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Elnora Slater
HOLT – Elnora Slater, age 94, of Holt passed away on Monday, Jan. 17, 2000.
Mrs. Slater was born June 11, 1905 in Bronson to Peter and Effie (George) Greenwald. Mrs. Slater graduated from Western Michigan University with a master’s degree. She retired from Comstock Public Schools where she taught kindergarten for 17 years. After retirement she moved to Riverview, Fla., where she lived for 24 years before relocating to the Great Lakes Christian Home in Holt.
Survivors include her sister Clara B. Keyes of East Lansing; two nieces Janet Cochrane of East Lansing and Barb Faulkner of Coldwater; one nephew Jim Keyes of East Lansing; one great niece Jill; three great nephews Jack, Andy and Scott; two great great nephews Austin and Caleb and one great great niece Allyson, along with a loving friend and “adopted” granddaughter Jane Mapstone.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Bob Palmer at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000 in the chapel of the Great Lakes Christian Home, 2050 South Washington, Holt.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions in loving memory of Mrs. Slater to the Ostomy Association of Greater Lansing, P.O. Box 10203, Lansing, Mich. 48901.

Doris F. Spencer, 87, of Jonesville, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2008, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born October 30, 1920 in Scipio Twp. to Harold & Hazel (Gillespie) Mann. She was married February 6, 1946 to Tom Spencer and he preceded her in death Jan. 5, 2004.
Mrs. Spencer was a life time resident of Scipio Twp. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, the National Grange and also a life member of the Mosherville Grange. She was a member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church for over 60 years and was the church organist for over 30 years. Her favorite past times were sewing and playing the piano.
Surviving are four children, Larry (Alice) Beeman, Ada, MI, Margaret (Kris) Brier, Charles (Kathleen) Spencer and Harold (Adrienne) Spencer, all of Jonesville; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was precede in death by her parents, husband, brother and two sisters.
Funeral services for Doris Spencer will be Monday, April 28, 2008, at 11:30 a.m., at the Jonesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment will follow at Johnson cemetery in Scipio Twp. The family will receive friends for visitation Sunday from 2-5 p.m., at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Jonesville United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
Alice Y. Lytle
COLDWATER – Alice Y. Lytle, 89, of Coldwater died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000 at her residence.
Mrs. Lytle was born March 1, 1910 in Clayton, Mich. to John and L. Ruby (Inman) Ingraham. She married Max Lytle in 1943 in Clayton. He preceded her in death in October 1995.
Mrs. Lytle was assistant manager of the A & P Grocery Store in Coldwater. She owned and operated four restaurants in the Coldwater area. She was a member and past president of the Organic Club.
Survivors include her sons Robert Lytle of Coldwater and Jerry Lytle of Detroit; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister Pearl Kerins.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Gillespie Funeral Home in Coldwater.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000 at Oak Grove cemetery Chapel. Burial will take place at Oak Grove cemetery in Coldwater.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Patricia R. Calloway
QUINCY – Patricia R. Calloway, 69, of Quincy, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000 at home.
Mrs. Calloway was born Feb. 21, 1930 to Ira LeRoy and Mable (Parks) Beagle in Flint.
She was a resident of Branch County for most of her life, coming here from Virginia. Mrs. Calloway was a homemaker. She loved to cook.
Preceding her in death was her husband Orlo Selles in 1965, son Donald Selles in 1978, daughter Linda Smith in 1983, two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include sons Ira Melton and Russell Melton, both of Coldwater, Thomas Melton of Winchester, Ky., daughter Sandra Robertson of Quincy, 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home. Rev. Andrew Lombardo of Coldwater’s First Baptist Church of will officiate.
Burial will take place at Fairview cemetery in Homer.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Walter J. Farrand
STURGIS — Walter J. Farrand, 95, of Colon Road, Colon, died March 2, 2000, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
He was born Feb. 4, 1905, in Colon, the son of Grant E. and Catherine (Roy) Farrand. On April 6, 1929, he married Leona W. DeBack in Kalamazoo, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 1993.
He lived in and around Colon most of his life. He graduated from Colon High School with the Class of 1923, and was the senior class president. He attended Ferris State University for 2 years.
He worked several jobs in the Colon area, including being the manager of Boyer Lumber Co. in Leonidas. He was a past Colon Village Council trustee, a member of the Colon Park and Beach Board, a member of the Colon United Methodist Church, a member of the Colon Athletic Club and of several card clubs in Colon.
Surviving are his son, James G. Farrand and wife Kathleen of Coldwater; a daughter, Miriam R. Johnson and husband Ralph of Norman, Okla.; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandsons; several step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and 4 brothers, Theron as an infant, Roy in 1974, Virgil in 1983 and Ray M. in 1989.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, March 5, from 6-8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home Ltd. in Colon. Funeral services will be Monday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside cemetery, Colon.
If desired, memorials may be made to the Colon United Methodist Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Charles Mitchell
BRONSON — Charles Mitchell, 77, of Bronson, died Thursday evening, March 2, 2000, at the Laurels of Coldwater following a long illness.
He was born March 9, 1922, in Bronson, the son of Fritz and Gertrude (Mowery) Erickson and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. He married Helen Shook on Aug. 28, 1948 in Coldwater.
Chuck was a truck driver for Commercial Carriers for over 26 years, retiring after his first stroke in 1979. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Normandy and Central Europe. He had earned the European Campaign medal with five Bronze Stars. Chuck was a life member and past commander of the VFW Post 5003 in Bronson and a member of the American Legion Post 259 in Bronson.
He enjoyed his grandchildren, gardening and the coffee club.
Surviving are Helen, his wife of 52 years; daughter, Teri Mitchell of Bronson; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Todd Chapin of Orland, Ind.; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles “Buff” and Sandi Mitchell of Bronson and Kim and Harvette Mitchell of Alamogordo of New Mexico; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Jane Bone of Detroit.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial gathering at the Kolcz Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 7, from 5-8 p.m. closing with full military honors conferred by the American Legion and VFW Posts of Bronson.
