Lapeer
Mona M. Ernst, 74, of Lapeer, died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001).
She was born Nov. 28, 1926, in Lapeer, to Sumner and Emma (Firman) Curtiss. She married George W. Ernst Jr. in Flint on Nov. 18, 1960.
She went home to be with her Lord. She was employed for 18 years at the Michigan State Home and Training School of Lapeer, resigning in 1966. She was very active in Child Evangelism Fellowship and enjoyed teaching Bible Clubs and Sunday School, as well as traveling with her husband, George. She will be greatly missed by her loving family.
She is survived by her husband George of Lapeer; son, Randy (Towana) of Lapeer; stepchildren, George III., of Nev., Patricia (Wayne) Gasper of Texas, Diana Doyle of Coldwater and JoAnn (Randy) Hartwell of Quincy, Gene of Texas; 16 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Rex (Edith) Curtiss of Lapeer, Frank (Donna) Curtiss of Hadley; Charles (Lori) Curtiss of Lapeer; sister, Alice Huffman of Lapeer; many nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Child Evangelism Fellowship and the Hadley Baptist Church
Visitation will be 3-9 p.m., Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2001) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer.
Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday (Aug. 9, 2001) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. Rev. Reid Kitchen will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Bartine (Laur) Kozlow

Bartine (Laur) Kozlow, 45, of Mio (formerly of Lapeer), died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001).
She was born Aug. 11, 1955, in Lapeer, to Bud and Rencie (Schafer) Laur.
She graduated in 1976 from Lapeer West High School. She attended Kirkland College. She enjoyed reading her Bible and other books. She was a member of the Mio Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ed and son, Eric; father, Bud; sister, Georgina Qualls; brothers, Mark and Delrel; Aunts, Kate Powers and Bev; uncle, Ward; 6 nephews and 2 great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Rencie.
Funeral services were held Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) at the Mio Baptist Church. Pastor Glynn McMorris officiated. Burial was in the Kittle cemetery, Mio.

Mark E. Hagemeister

Dryden
Mark E. Hagemeister, 92, of Dryden, died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001) at Lapeer Regional Hospital.
He was born May 24, 1909, in Leonard, to Volnei and Mary (Joslyn) Hagemeister. He married Elsie L. Kraus in Lapeer on Feb. 21, 1948.
He served in the US Army during WWII. He worked for Pontiac Motors in the Paint Department, as a Painter in Plant #8 for 30 years before retiring in 1968. He liked to garden.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie of Dryden; sons, Gerald H. (Geraldine) of Dryden, Ronald D. (Barbara Ann) of Springfield, Mo.; grandchildren, Timothy, Deborah Osman, Charles, Lisa Watts, Cindy, John, Mark and Sandra Biggs; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Paul of Dryden.
He was preceded in death by his son, Charles; seven brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City. Rev. Frederick Timm will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Dryden.

Benjamin Costello

Benjamin Costello, 77, of Lapeer, died Aug. 3, 2001.
He was born May 30, 1924, in Lapeer, to Duncan and Lucy (Hill) Costello.
Mr. Costello lived most of his life at the Lapeer State Home. He worked many years at Growth and Opportunity in Lapeer.
Funeral services were held Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Rev. Peter DeKlerk officiated.

Robert Barkus

Fostoria
Robert Barkus, 68, of Fostoria, died Aug. 3, 2001.
He was born Oct. 26, 1932, in Burton Twp, to Charles and Luella (Gonyea) Barkus.
Bob graduated from Bendle High School in 1951, where he was captain of the football team for 1 year and played for the football team for 4 years. Bob was owner and operator of the Depot Party Store in Deckerville, from 1980-1994. He also assisted in his parent's general store and gas station, the C&L Market at Buck's Corner north of Lapeer, from 1966 to 1976. Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the National Rifle Association of America and a life member of the Teamsters in which he also served as a Union Steward.
He is survived by his daughters, Charlene (Kyle) of Kalkaska, Deanna Lee of Wisconsin, and Leslie (Michael) Fry of Battle Creek; mother, Luella of Fostoria; 2 grandchildren, Hope and Brook Fry; one great-grandchild; brothers, Donald of Houghton Lake and Alan (Maxine) of Linden; nieces, Debra and Leanne.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Francis Barkus in 1998. Memorial contributions be made to the Operation Blessing through the 700 Club, or the National Rifle Association-Political Action Committee.
A graveside service was held Monday (Aug. 6, 2001).

Marion A. Bannister

Holland
Marion A. Bannister, 86, of Holland, died Aug. 2, 2001.
She was born June 24, 1915, to Albert and Anna (Jelneck) Newman.
She resided in Holland since 1993. Marion was trained as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Mt. Clemens, graduating in 1937. She worked in many settings throughout her nursing career, including hospitals and private physicians offices. She was also the on-site nurse for the Ford Motor Company's Michigan Proving Grounds in Romeo for 16 years prior to her retirement in 1975. She was always actively involved in community, social and charitable organizations. As a young mother she managed a busy career along with leading Cub Scouts and Girl Scout Troops for many years. She was the founding member of the International Beta Sibma Phi Soroity's, Romeo's Chapter, from which other Chapters were later developed in nearby Communities. She chaired fundraising efforts and committees for the construction of the Community Hospital in Almont and was in charge of the Community Hospital Scholarship Fund for nursing students for many years. She also organized several blood bank drives for the American Red cross in the Romeo area. She was the regional fundraising chairperson for the March of Dimes for many years. She once was honored for her contributions in leading the Sugar Cube campaign, by a trip to California, to be commended by Dr. Jonas Salk (The founder of the Polio Vaccine and later Sugar Cube). She was also the first recipient of the Ford Motor Company Service Award two years in a row. For many years after retirement, she volunteered countless hours as a Literacy teacher, first for Community Education Center in Holland. Her students came from many different countries to learn to read, write and speak English. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Holland.
She is survived by her children, Dr. William D. (Sally) Doebler of Holland and Rev. Dr. Maurine C. Waun of Pittsburg, Pa.; step-children, Cheryl Biondo of Cicily, Barbara Delbridge of Utica and Anita Little of Holly; 5 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Anna Newman; two husbands, Maurice C. Doebler in 1963, and Roy A. Bannister in 1995.
A memorial service was held Monday (July 6, 2001) at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Holland. Rev. John Westra Officiated. Burial was held at the Romeo cemetery.

Ella C. Brierly

Metamora
Ella C. Brierley, 91, of Metamora, died Friday (Oct. 5, 2001).
She was born June 12, 1910, in Eau Galle, Wis., to William H. and Ann (Samuel) Weber. She married Robert G. Brierley in Jacksonville, Fla. on Dec. 20, 1934.
Ella was proud to have been a member at St. James Episcopal Church, Birmingham. She was most importantly a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Robert of Lapeer; daughter, Judith (William) Taylor of Dryden; grandsons, Geoffrey Bartig and David A. Bartig.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
Cremation has taken place. A graveside service has taken place. Deacon Bill Bones officiated. Burial was in White Chapel cemetery, Troy.

Steven P. Stroh

Lapeer
Steven P. Stroh, 48, of Lapeer, died Thursday (Oct. 4, 2001).
He was born June 30, 1953, in Wyandotte, to Paul and Lucille (Turner) Stroh. He married Carolyn Hill in Lapeer on Sept. 10, 1977.
Steven was an avid snow skier and loved making wine. He also enjoyed camping with his family and friends, as well as photography. He was employed with B.A.S.F. in Southfield for 15 years where he worked as a chemist. He served in the U.S. Army for 25 years, currently as Lt. Col. with the Active Reserves.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son, Brian Joseph of Kalamazoo; daughter, Elizabeth Cara of Lapeer; parents, Paul and Lucille of Lincoln Park; sisters, Christine (John) Rankin of Japan and Paula Joan Heizer of Springhill, Tenn.; many brothers and sisters-in-law; several nieces, nephews and friends.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated in his honor Monday (Oct. 8, 2001) at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Lapeer. Burial was in Stiles cemetery, Lapeer.

Thomas G. Omans

Almont
Thomas G. Omans, 65, of Almont, died Oct., 3, 2001.
He was born March 29, 1936, in Houghton, to Lewis E. and Eunice A. (LeClaire) Omans. He married Anna Hogancamp in Highland Park on Oct. 8, 1955.
He was a graduate of the Washington Trade School in Detroit. Mr. Omans owned and operated Pebble Pushers, Inc., and Cement Express trucking companies. He retired from the Teamsters Local 247. He was a member of the F.O.P. in Sterling Heights, the Detroit Blues Society as well as the Friendship Club.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; daughters, Cheryl M. Lovett of Swartz Creek and Debra A. of Ypsilanti; son, Thomas G. II of Metamora; grandchildren, Brian H. Lovett IV and Erin E. Lovett; brothers, Milton of Milwaukee and Lewis E. Jr., of Ferndale; sister, Paulette Goolsby of Rochester Hills; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Herbert, Clyde, and Paul.
Funeral services were held Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Almont. Rev. Fred Timm of the Dryden United Methodist officiated.
