Dean Upleger
Died: Thursday, September 06, 2001
Age: 60

Madison, Fla.

Dean Upleger, 60, of Madison, Fla. (formerly of Almont), died Sept. 6, 2001 at Gainsville Hospital, Florida.

He was born Aug. 5, 1941, in Imlay City, to Gordon and Dorothy (Wagner) Upleger.

He graduated from Almont High School in 1959. He then spent time in the U.S. Army and later returned to Almont. He was self employed for masonry and carpentry work. He moved to Florida in 1985. He enjoyed the outdoor life, hunting, fishing, large cook outs and especially his friends in Michigan and Florida. He was married to Kathy Ferrell for 8 years and had two daughters from that union.

He is survived by his daughters, Crissy (Rick) Prince and Regina, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; parents Gordon and Dorothy and brother, Wayne all of Rockwall, Texas; nieces, Kimberlie Hanna of Rockwall, Texas and Stacy Brown of Mounds View, Minn.; special friend Melliessa Williams.

Funeral services were held Sept. 9, 2001 in Lee, Fla., with a 21 gun salute, two eulogies, several poems written for him and a flag presentation.

Brunhilde Thomas
Died: Wednesday, September 05, 2001

Lapeer

Brunhilde Thomas, 90, of Lapeer, died Sept. 5, 2001.

She was born June 26, 1911, in St. Louis, Mo., to the Rev. Gustav and Hedwig (Opp) Schmidt. She married Fillmore Thomas on Aug. 8, 1947.

She graduated from Henry Frick Teachers College in 1931. She taught in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Schools for 12 years. She was a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, stationed at Parris Island, S.C., from 1943-1946. She served as the assistant disbursing officer. She moved to Lapeer in 1946 and worked with her husband at Fillmore Thomas and Co., Inc., for 50 years. Mrs. Thomas served as choir director of Grace Episcopal Church for 26 years. She was a 48 year member of the Lapeer Tuesday Club and the Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Fillmore; sons, William of Lapeer and Robert (Mary Ellen) of Lapeer; grandchildren, Michael Ryan, Colleen and Emily all of Lapeer.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church.

The Burial Office was read Saturday (Sept. 8, 2001) at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Steven Dewey and the Rev. Canon F. Robert Davidson officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery.

Julius "Juice" Kovacs
Died: Tuesday, September 04, 2001

Mio

Julius Juice Kovacs, 72, of Mio (formerly of Lapeer), died Sept. 4, 2001.

He was born Dec. 10, 1928, in Flint, to Steven and Mary (Grunda) Kovacs. He married Donna Haupt in Clio on Jan. 11, 1964.

Mr. Kovacs served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Juice was a set-up man at A.C . Spark Plug for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He was a musician in the Flint area almost 30 years, playing drums with many area bands. Juice was a member of the Lapeer Model Railroad Club. He enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Donna of Mio; children, David of Montrose, Christina (Crencio) Salas of Almont, John (Corrine) of Portage, Anna (Tim) Mitchell of Lapeer, William of Kinchloe, Daniel of Mio, Anthony of Muskegon, Richard of Flat Rock, Rose of Imlay City, Kenneth (Michele) of Lupton; 11 grandchildren; siblings, Eugene (Maryann) of Burton, Anne (Leonard) Piorwitz of Houghton Lake; brother-in-law, Bill Beck of Rochester Hills.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Burgan; sister, Mary Beck; brother, Bill and parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Funeral services were held Friday (Sept. 7, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Father Janusz Iwan officiated.

Jessie Jannereth
Died: Tuesday, September 04, 2001

Metamora

Jessie Jannereth, 85, of Metamora (formerly of Tavares, Fla.), died Sept. 4, 2001.

She was born June 18, 1916, in Saranac, to Clarence and Hattie (Calvin) Estelle. She married Robert Jannereth on June 6, 1936.

Mrs. Jannereth was a secretary for Owen-Corning Glass Company. She was a member of the Mid-Lakes Christian Church in Tavares, Fla.

She is survived by her husband, Robert of Metamora; children, Robert (Jacki) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Bonnie (Chuck) Schiedegger of Metamora; grandchildren, Cindi (Fred) Stemas of Payton, Colo., Amy Christian of Fulton, S.D., Chistopher (Samantha) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jeff Schiedegger of Ann Arbor, Kim (Mark) Pytelski of Allenton, Debi (Mark) Fosmoen of Brighton, Alana Schiedegger of Lapeer; brother, Kendall Estelle of Florida; half-siblings, Vivian Kooiker, Roger Estelle, Robert Estelle and Richard Estelle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Jim Estelle, Lauren Estelle, Ethel Davenport; half-sibling, Elsie Sherd and Phyllis Hoogstra.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Funeral services were held Friday (Sept. 7, 2001) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Rev. Terry Euper officiated.

Marie M. Fillion
Died: Tuesday, September 04, 2001

Oxford

Marie M. Tommi Fillion, 82, of Oxford, died Tuesday (Sept. 4, 2001).

Mrs. Fillion was a sales associate with Century 21 in Oxford. She was formerly in Real Estate in Lapeer County for 22 years and Oakland County for 4 years. She was a member of Lake Orion-Oxford Kiwanis Club, Orion-Oxford Boys and Girls Club, Cross Roads for Youth, Oxford Chamber of Commerce, Metamora Chamber of Commerce, Metamora Lioness Club and the Lapeer Economic Club. She was a recipient of the Unsung Hero Award in Oxford in May of this year. She was active in her volunteer work at golf outings, Taste of Town events and other fund raising projects. She was a member of Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ in Oxford.

She is survived by her daughter, Claudia (George) Roberts of Lake Orion; son, Charles (Lynn) of Ortonville; 6 grandchildren; brother, William (Niva) Tomilenko; sister, Josephine Switanowski; and many others who referred to her as Grandma.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude and daughter, Corinne Kowalski.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Orion-Oxford or Camp Oakland.

Funeral services were held Friday (Sept. 7, 2001) at the Lake Orion Chapel Sparks-Griffin Funeral Home. Burial was in White Chapel cemetery.

Louisa M. Keefer
Died: Saturday, September 01, 2001

Lapeer

Louisa M. Keefer, 78, of Lapeer (formerly of Elmore, Ohio), died Sept. 1, 2001.

She was born April 15, 1923, in Elmore, Ohio, to Burch Nelson and Hattie (Anstead) Overmyer. She married Clifford E. Keefer in Elmore, Ohio, on June 26, 1941.

Mrs. Keefer was a sales clerk at Walters' Music Store in Lapeer for over 20 years. She also worked at J.C. Penney and Gwinns Hardware in Lapeer. The Keefers were recognized as friends of Lapeer County 4-H for their continued support of the local 4-H program.

She is survived by her husband, Clifford of Lapeer; children, Nelson of Lapeer; Dennis of Lapeer, Susan (Edward) Patterson of Lapeer, Burton (Linda) of Pigeon; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Garnet; parents; brothers, Lawrence Overmyer, Howard Overmyer and Daniel Overmyer.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or March of Dimes.

Funeral services were held Sept. 5, 2001 at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Rev. Peter DeKlerk officiated. Burial was in Stiles cemetery, Lapeer.

Edna Westover
Died: Saturday, September 01, 2001

Mayville

Edna Westover, 94, of Mayville, died Sept. 1, 2001 at the Fisher Convalescent Home in Mayville.

She was born June 13, 1907 in Silverwood. She married Harold Westover in Silverwood on Aug. 6, 1927.

She retired from the United States Postal service of Silverwood after 15 years of service and was a member of the Silverwood United Methodist Church for 80 years. She loved to travel and be with her grandchildren. She shared 60 years of marriage with her husband Harold.

She is survived by her daughters, Harriet (Raphael) O'Brien and Lois (Bud) Walker both of Mayville; grandchildren, Christal, Daniel, David, Theresa, Tim, Floyd, Pat and Larry; 28 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1987; granddaughter, Sandra Walker; brothers, Lloyd and Leonard Cowles.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mayville Ambulance, Mayville Fire Department or the Silverwood United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Thursday (Sept. 6, 2001) at the Silverwood United Methodist Church. The Rev. John Ball officiated. Burial was in West Burlington cemetery, Silverwood.

Robert Earl Reitz
Died: Saturday, September 01, 2001

Lapeer

Robert Earl Reitz, 82, of Lapeer, died Sept. 1, 2001 at the Lapeer County Medical Care Facility.

He was born Dec. 31, 1918 in Akron, Ohio. He married Maryellen Dresselhouse in Highland Park, in the Mayor's home, on Nov. 14, 1942.

He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from A.C. Spark Plug, completing 25 years of service. He was a proud member of the American Legion, the V.F.W. and enjoyed dancing. A special Thank You to Suncrest, Dr. Davis and Nurse Kim for their loving and professional care of our loved one. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife and family.

He is survived by his wife, Maryellen; sons, Russell E. (Sharon) of Lapeer, Robert (Lita) of Burton; daughter, Maryellen (Christian) Meyer of Lapeer; grandchildren, Russell (Anhel), Rob, Ryan and Bobby O, Melissa (Brian) Harris, Todd (Angela) Meyer and Adam Meyer; great-grandchildren, Marilyn, Jessie, Jared and Halie Harris; his mother, Alaphair Reitz of Ohio; brother, Richard (Carol) of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert and sister, Lois.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran School.

Funeral services were held Tuesday (Sept. 4, 2001) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. Rev. John Kaiser officiated. Burial was held with a Military Service under the auspices of the American Legion Post #16 Honor Guard.
