Carl W. Delling
Died: Saturday, September 22, 2001

Lapeer

On September 22, 2001, my father passed from this life to unite with our Lord and many friends and family that had passed before. The loss is great as he was more than my father, he was my companion and my best friend. I realize that my loss is heavens gain and that I must be strong for that is what he would have expected, but please realize this is a day I never wanted to face and while his heart was attached it was mine that was broken. I lost my strongest supporter and his confidence in me was often a great source of strength. While I was the one with the education and supposed intellect, it wasn't until now that I understood what he was trying to teach me in the final days. With the recent events at the World Trade Center and my father passing, I realize that we may never have the opportunity to say to those we love how we feel. I never told my dad how much I loved and respected him, for to do that would be to acknowledge that I was someday going to lose him. Instead I ignored the opportunities he gave me as neither of us wanted to speak of what we both knew was inevitable. My ignorance causes much of my distress today. I am sure my dad knew how much I loved him by my acts and deeds, but I am sure the words would have comforted him even more. I always thought there would be a tomorrow, but unfortunately tomorrow is today and my words must now reach to heaven and I must wait an eternity for his response. While the sadness of his death haunts me, I must ask you to rejoice in his life. While my father had a limited education, he was smart enough to run the city of Flint as the Third Ward Councilman and was Vice Mayor. While he was a proud and independent man, he learned unity and justice in his tenure in the Sit Down Strike in 1936, and as a Flint City Policeman from 1939-1950. He was a tough man as evident by his boxing prowess as Civilian Conservation Corps Champion or as owner of the Blue Bird Cafe which was one of Flints toughest areas to operate a bar. He was an outspoken man often speaking out when doing so was not always popular. My father enjoyed 88 years on this earth and as a result of his life the world and the lives of many people have been made better and their burdens lighter. Carl Watrous Delling was a man I was proud to have as my father and to have enjoyed his passing, but, also in my rejoicing in the ending of his pain and suffering, and in transcending this life to the next. They say you can tell the value of a man by the value of his friends. Thanks to all of you, my father will pass as a rich man. I can only hope to live my life as fully as my father lived his. On behalf of my father and family I thank you for your thoughts, for your prayers and your kindness.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lapeer County Democratic Party or McLaren Hospice.

Memorial services were held Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at the New Beginnings Outreach International Church, Lapeer.

A graveside service was held Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at Evergreen cemetery, Grand Blanc.

Arrangements by Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer.
