H. Charles "Charlie" Montgomery Jr., 59, of Lapeer, died April 19, 2002.
He was born Nov. 12, 1942, in North Branch, to Harrison Charles Sr. and Faith (Miller) Montgomery. He married Judy McAra at the Methodist Church in Davison on July 7, 1966.
He graduated from Lapeer High School in 1960 and served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was employed with Pontiac Motors for 34 years (UAW Local 653), retiring in 1996. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapeer. He was a member of the American Legion Post 16 in Lapeer.
He is survived by his wife, Judy of Lapeer; children, Andrea Montgomery of Lapeer and Tyler Montgomery of Otter Lake; mother, Faith Montgomery of Lapeer; siblings, Jane Morris of Lapeer, Martha (Larry) Smith of Lapeer, Dave (Cecelia) of Lapeer, Pat (Becci) of Lapeer, Mary Smith of Port Huron, John (Sandy) of Lapeer; many nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Buddy.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harrison Montgomery Sr.

Funeral services were Tuesday (April 23, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Chong Won officiated. Burial was held in Stiles cemetery, Lapeer, with military graveside services under the auspices of American Legion Post 16 Lapeer.

Mark J. Freeman

Mark J. Freeman, 87, of Bradenton, Fla., died April 18, 2002.
He was born April 8, 1915, in Dryden, to Jim and Gertie Freeman.
He was raised in Attica, where his father operated a saw mill and cider press for many years. He was an avid deer hunter, never missing a season in 50 consecutive years. For 47 years, his wife, Virginia, was with him in the woods. The tradition continues today with his family in Sidnaw. He loved the outdoors, fishing and camping with his family were very important. He was a world class horseshoe pitcher, participating in the World Class B Intermediate Tournament at Keene, N.H., and winning the Class B Title in Greenville, Ohio, in 1975. He was proud to be a 40-gallon blood donor. He retired from the former Lapeer State Home in 1975 and lived for many years in Bradenton, Fla. He served as past master of the Masonic Lodge of Lapeer, president of the Lapeer Lions Club, member of Trinity Methodist Church, associate members of Sidnaw and Bradenton, Fla., churches, and lay eader of the Port Huron District 1962-1966. He was instrumental in the Building Fund of Trinity United Methodist Church. He will be greatly missed by his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughter, Sally (Carl) Swadling; daughter-in-law, Judy Freeman; grandchildren, Kevin (Mandy) and Brad (Dawn) Swadling, Mark F. (Michele) Roark, (Shelbi) and Amanda Freeman, Ashley (Chris) Harvey, Allison (Jay) Tolleson; great-grandchildren, Michelle and Peyton Swadling, David Bobrowski, Krystal Gabouri, Hunter and Colton Freeman, and Calloway Tolleson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; a son, Mark O.; a brother, Lloyd; a sister, Mary; and his parents, Jim and Gertie Freeman.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Foundation.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Saturday (May 25, 2002) at Trinity United Methodist Church Chapel, Lapeer.

Almont
Erma M Spaven, 92, of Almont, died Thursday (April 18, 2002) at Lapeer Regional Hospital.
She was born Oct. 30, 1909, in Ubly, to George and Nellie (Phelp) Russell. She married Watson Spaven on Oct. 20, 1933.
She had been a cook in the Mayville school system. She was a past member of the Mayville Order of the Eastern Star and also a member of the First Congregational Church in Almont.
She is survived by her son, Fred (Marilyn) Spaven of Hale; daughters, Geri Cargill of Almont and Mary Ann (Jim) Pilditch of Saginaw; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Watson in 1970; and seven siblings.

Visitation was Sunday (April 21, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Almont.
Funeral services were Monday (April 22, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Almont. The Rev. Larry W. Rieck of the First Congregational Church officiateed. Burial was in Elkland Towship cemetery in Cass City.

Beatrice (Honald) Dietz, 93, of Gladwin (formerly of Metamora), died Thursday (April 18, 2002).
She was born May 15, 1908, in Gaylord, to Fred and Hazel (Spenser) Honald. She married Lloyd Dietz, Sr., in Caro on Oct. 27, 1924.
She is survived by her children, Lloyd Deitz of Temple and Duane (Jacqueline) Deitz of Harrison; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elizabeth Sawallish of Howell.

Barbara Helen Fader, 84, of Grand Rapids (formerly of Columbiaville), died April 17, 2002 in Grand Rapids.
She was born May 13, 1917, in Columbiaville, to Claude E. and Ella (Lawrence) Robertson.
She graduated from Central Michigan College of Education in 1938 and taught school at Columbiaville Elementary, retiring in 1982.
She is survivied by her daughters, Sue (Richard) Dunn of St. Johns and Nancy (Kim) Strawe of Curtis; son, Robert (Pat) of Temple, Texas; grandchildren, Amy (Mike) Alpert of Orange Co., Calif, Mark Dunn of Harbor Springs, Scott and Brooke Fader of Temple, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Logan and Camden Alpert.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Porter Hills Benevolence Fund, 3590 E. Fulton, Grand Rapids, 49546 in her memory.
A memorial service was 2 p.m., Saturday (July 27, 2002) at the Columbiaville United Methodist Church. The Rev. David C. Collins officiated. Burial of cremains was in Woodland cemetery, Columbiaville.

James R. Baize, 49, of Mayville, died Wednesday (April 17, 2002).
He was born Dec. 9, 1952, in Pontiac, to Nathan and Beulah (Harmon) Baize. He married Marlene Vicky Rose on Oct. 15, 1973 in Oscoda.
He served in and retired from the United States Air Force with 20 years of service. He and Marlene celebrated 29 years of marriage. He was a member of the Caro Eagle Club, Abate, The Loyal Order of Swing Wing Crow and The Mule Skinners. He bowled in Mayville and Otter Lake Lanes. He enjoyed playing pool and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He had a great love for horses and his dog, Scout.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene; sons, David Wayne (Kim) Beam Jr. of Davison, George Michael Beam of Maine, James Russell (Tiffanie) Baize Jr. of Mayville, Billy Bob Baize of Maine; sister, Rosalie (Chip) Noell of Waterford; brothers, George, Edward (Marcia) Baize of Columbiaville and Nathan (Patti) Baize of Marlette; grandchildren, Deborah Beam, James Baize III, Brianna Mitchell Baize, Sidney Baize, Joseph Michael Beam; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Deloris Jean Quertermous.

Paul T. Schulze Sr.

Paul T. Schulze Sr., 66, of North Branch, died Tuesday (April 16, 2002) at McLaren Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 10, 1935, in Detroit, to Hugo and Jean (Ross) Schulze. He married Dawn Marie Revoldt in Royal Oak on Feb. 29, 1964.
He grew up in Detroit and lived in the Lapeer County area for 29 years. He attended Cass Tech in Detroit and received his engineering degree at Lawrence Tech in Detroit. He worked as part of the design staff at the GM Tech Center in Warren for 33 years before retiring in 1998. He was past master and member of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 51 of Almont-Dryden, Frankenmuth Wood Carving Club, Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Country Christian Church in Deerfield Township.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn M. Schulze of North Branch; son, Paul T. Schulze Jr. of Holland; daughter, Jenifer (Mike) Mlecsko of Oxford; and brother, Hugo (Madge) Schulze of Waterford.
Funeral services were Saturday (April 20, 2002) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Imlay City. The Rev. Roger Keur of Country Christian Church officiated. Ashes will be interred at a later date in Imlay Township cemetery, Imlay City.

Lula P. Schigoda, 86, of Lapeer, died Tuesday (April 16, 2002) at Lapeer Regional Hospital.
She was born Dec. 2, 1915, in Flint, to Ted and Myrtle (Benden) Oliver.
She was a loving and faithful caregiver for her daughter, Johnita, for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Johnita; step-children, Adaleen (Bob) Harden of Gaylord, Marilyn Grey of Colorado and Leroy (Margaret) of North Carolina; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, siblings, Judy Allen of Linden, Beatrice Laidlaw of Lapeer and Ted Phyllis Oliver of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Schigoda in 1964; step-son-in-law, Larry Grey; brothers, Howard and Kenneth Oliver; sisters, Margaret Clark and Barbara Northup; and brothers-in-law, Charles Allen and Eugene Laidlaw.
Memorial contributions may be made to McLaren Hospice or Suncrest Auxiliary.
Funeral services were Friday (April 19. 2002) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. John C. Kaiser officiated. Burial was in Forest Lawn cemetery, Detroit.
