Annette Phillips Higbie Gallogly
Died: Saturday, April 20, 2002

Birmingham

Annette Phillips Higbie Gallogly, 91, of Birmingham, died April 20, 2002 in San Ramon Calif.
She was born Oct. 19, 1910, to George E. and Genevieve (Seeley) Phillips. She married Carlton M. Higbie in 1934, she later married West H. Gallogly in 1959.
Her father was the superintendent of Herman Kiefer Hospital in Detroit. She was raised in Detroit and Bloomfield Hills. She attended Liggett School and Low Heywood School for girls. As a child, she frequently drove her pony cart down Adams Road and tied it up outside the blacksmith shop at the corner of Maple and Old Woodward Avenue in downtown Birmingham. As a young woman she raised Scottish terriers. She was an avid horsewoman and competed in many local horse shows. She and Carlton raised five children. During the war, she passed the required auto mechanic's test and joined the Red Cross Motor Corps, where she drove jeeps and ambulances. After the war, she became very involved with the Detroit Horse Show. For three years, she and friends, Peggy Flinn and Susan Fisher, were responsible for the arrangement and presentation of the Detroit Horse Show at the Bloomfield Open Hunt. She also co-founded the Kingsbury School in Oxford. After she was widowed in 1955, she continued to play an active roll in the growth and development of Kingsbury, following the vision she and Carlton shared. Her lifelong passion and commitment to quality education was reflected in a message she gave to the 40th anniversary gathering of the Kingsbury School in 1993 when she said, "The challenge to Kingsbury is clear; to remain committed to teaching children the values we so strongly believe and to provide an education in an environment that nurtures talents and creativity." Although she was a world traveler, her favorite place was Metamora's wooded hillsides and quaint old farms. Her home there was most appropriately named Viewpoint Farms. Waking at dawn on Saturday mornings to follow the hunt was a common practice in the fall. She loved animals and was rarely seen without a dog at her side. For several summers, at their home on Lake Angelus, her and West Gallogly hosted Neville Marriner and his wife, Molly, when Marriner conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at Meadow Brook. She and West built "the cabin" across from Otsego Ski Club in 1960. The ponderosa log home was a favorite holiday and weekend retreat for their multitude of family and friends. Her roots go back a long way in Michigan. Her great-great-grandfather, Needham Hemingway, settled in Oakland County in 1824, after crossing Lake Erie on the small passenger steamer Mudhen. He built the first frame house near Pontiac on the Old Indian Trail, that connected Detroit and Saginaw. He later dammed Paint Creek to provide a water supply for a sawmill. That mill pond is now Lake Orion.
She is survived by her children, Ann H. Eckrich of Fort Wayne, Ind., Carla H. Stroh of Friday Harbor, Wash, George P. Higbie of Oakland, Calif, Stephen B. Higbie of Birmingham, Susan Higbie of Cambria, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her second husband, West Callogly.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Kingsbury School, 5000 Hosner Road, Oxford, MI, 48370 or at www.kingsburyschool.org.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Friday (May 17, 2002) at Christ Church Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills. Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday (July 20, 2002) at the Kingsbury cemetery.
