William Allen Ginger

William Allen Ginger, 88, of Lapeer (formerly of Oscoda, Bonita Springs, Fla. and Flint), died Sunday (June 2, 2002).
He was born Jan. 31, 1914, in Morehouse, Mo., to William and Ida (Young) Ginger. He married Agnes Lillian Vining in Flint on April 3, 1937.
He was a firefighter for the City of Flint for 25 years. He retired on May 15, 1967. At the time of retirement, he was the assistant fire chief of the City of Flint for 25 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lapeer. He and Agnes shared 65 years of marriage together. He was an avid square dancer and round dance teacher. He loved golf.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes Ginger of Lapeer; Godchild, Jan Louise Gornik of Ann Arbor; siblings, Earl (Emmeline) Ginger of Burton, James (Vera) Ginger of Millington, William D. Ginger of Fort Meyers, Fla., Arlene (Gene) Poliskey of Flint; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ida (Young) Ginger.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Lapeer.
Visitation will be 10-11 a.m., Thursday (June 6, 2002) at the First Presbyterian Church, Lapeer.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday (June 6, 2002) at the church. The Revs. Todd Smith and Marvin Ramthun will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery, Lapeer.

Ervin Kitchenmaster
Died: Sunday, June 02, 2002

Ann Arbor
Ervin Kitchenmaster, 84, of Ann Arbor (formerly of Lapeer), died Sunday (June 2, 2002).
He was born April 8, 1918 in Lapeer. He was married to Lucile Larmee from Oct. 15, 1941 until her death in 1986. He then married Genevieve Kaminski in Ann Arbor on Nov. 12, 1993.
He was a decorated war hero, recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star from his mission in Holland after the D-Day Invasion. He was part of the select group of the "Path Finder Team" of the 82nd Airborne. He was wounded in action on Sept. 30, 1944. He lost his right leg and suffered compound fractures in his left leg and right arm. He spent 20 months in the hospital recuperating from his injuries. After two years of rehabilitation from his war injuries, he attended Cleary College, majoring in accounting. After acquiring his degree, he was employed by the federal government as an Internal Revenue Service agent and audit supervisor. He and Lucile were active members of Bethlehem United Church of Christ, the Disabled American Veteran's Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his spare time, he was a real estate developer in the Ann Arbor area. This enabled him to retire from the Federal Government at age 52. After retirement, he and Lucile traveled and spent six months of the year in Florida. He was a devoted family man and he especially enjoyed pulling his grandchildren on the water skis. He had a great love for horses and enjoyed watching his pacers and trotters race at the county fair. He was a generous man.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve of Sun City, Fla.; daughters, Janet (John) Petrowski of Lenexa, Kan., Carol (Larry) Oakes of Ypsilanti, and Kathryn (Steven) Berger of Grand Rapids; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mabel G. Frey of Sun City, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucile in 1986; parents, John and Katherine Kitchenmaster of Lapeer; brothers, Milo and Louis; and sisters, Hazel Anderson of Ann Arbor, Arla Schlaud of Lapeer and Helen Kitchenmaster of Lapeer.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday (June 5, 2002) at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday (June 6, 2002) at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, Ann Arbor. Burial will be in Bethlehem cemetery.

Lawrence Nowodworski

Lawrence "Larry" Nowodworski, 59, of Lapeer, died Saturday (June 1, 2002).
He was born Oct. 16, 1942, in Detroit, to Joseph and Wanda (Binkowski) Nowodworski. He married Marilyn Schafke in Detroit on Nov. 14, 1964.
He worked in environmental services at Huron Valley Sinai Hospital for many years. He served his country in the Army. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and active in the Knights of Columbus. He played an important role in starting the Food Pantry at Immaculate Conception Church and the Memorial Walk at Mount Loretto cemetery. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Nowodworski of Lapeer; children, Donna (Clinton) Fox of Davison, Deborah Nowodworski of South Lyon and Dawn (David) Peskey of Metamora; grandchildren, Ryan Fox, Dawson Peskey; siblings, Dolores Nowodworski, Delphine (Al) Dolecki of Clinton, Elaine (Tom) Balawender of Oxford; godchild, Christie Balawender of Oxford.
Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Food Pantry Building Fund.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Wanda Nowodworski; parents-in-law, Dorothy and Adolph Schafke.
Funeral services were Wednesday (June 5, 2002) at Immaculate Conception Church, Lapeer. The Rev. Douglas Terrien and Deacon Jerry DeShaw will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Loretto cemetery, Lapeer.

Margie Middleton Schuldt

Margie Middleton Schuldt, 70, of Imlay City (formerly of Memphis), died Saturday (June 1, 2002) at Lapeer Regional Hospital.
She was born on Dec. 30, 1931, in Detroit, to Gordon and Ione (Shields) Snyder.
She retired from Chrysler Corp. following some 13 years of service. She worked at the Sterling Heights Stamping Plant. She was an artist and loved to paint. She was a very giving and charitable person who will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Gordon (Donna) Middleton of Armada, Marilyn (Spence) Spencer of Capac, Julie (Doug) Thompson of Imlay City, and Paul (Diane) Middleton of North Street; many grandchildren; one great grandchild; sister, Judy Higgs of Memphis; brother, Joe Medor of Fenton; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Ione Snyder.

Walter Westphal

Walter Westphal, 68, of Thornville, died Thursday (May 30, 2002).
He was born May 31, 1933, in Centerline, to Laurel and Ruth (Brown) Westphal. He married Clara May Smith in Thornville on Sept. 17, 1960.
He served his country in the Navy during the Korean War. He had been a security guard at the Pontiac Silverdome and had worked at Twist Frill. He was currently working at Cast Rite. He was a member of the Thornville Baptist Church. He enjoyed watching sports, gardening and yard work. He especially loved his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Clara May Westphal of Thornville; children, Greg (Ruth) Westphal of North Branch, Terry (Marianne) Westphal of Almont and Tracy (Christopher) Varjabedian of Bloomfield; grandchildren, Tara Weingartz, Peter Weingartz, Christine Weingartz, Nathaniel Weingartz, Christopher Westphal, Elizabeth Westpahl, Marisa Westpahl, Matthew Westphal, Christine Varjabedian and Steven Varjabedian; siblings, Ilene (Don) Hovey of Lapeer, Gwendolyn Austin of Lapeer, George (Geanne) Westphal of Grover Beach, Calif., Harold (Donna) Westphal of Lapeer, Mary (JC) Greenwood of Marlette and Carol (Leon) Blow of Valdosta, Ga.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Roy Westphal and Ed Westphal.

Gerald F. Eckel

Pigeon
Gerald F. "Jack" Eckel, 71, of Pigeon, died Thursday (May 30, 2002) at Scheurer Hospital in Pigeon.
He was born Oct. 7, 1930 to William and Edith (Hauxwell) Eckel. He married Susan E. Snoblen in Lapeer on Oct. 15, 1955.
As a teenager in Hadley, he began working for International Harvester. In 1966 he began full-time work in Pigeon at International Harvester, (now known as Osentoski Equipment, Inc.), where he still worked two to three days a week. He was a 1949 graduate of Goodrich High School. He served in the Army's 101st Airborne Division during the Korean War as a fireman, stationed at Ford Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and hunting. He collected International Harvester memorabilia and enjoyed working on his 1950 IH Cub tractor. He was a life member of the Metamora-Hadley 210 Free and Accepted Masons. He was also a member of the Pigeon Conservation Club and the Pigeon Lions Club.
He is survived by his daughter, Judith (Roger) Vollmer of Bay Port; son, Thomas (Kelly) of Pigeon; grandchildren, Robin (Michael) Rau, Seth Eckel and Peter Vollmer; sister, Genevieve (Arden) Coulter of Lapeer; sisters-in-law, Irene Eckel of Hadley and Margaret Eckel of Florida; brother-in-law, Donald Bird of Davison; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan, on May 9, 1989; parents, William and Edith (Hauxwell) Eckel; brothers, Lorain, Duane and Keith; and sister, Evelyn Bird.

James M. VanConant

James M. VanConant, 60, of Jackson and Elk Rapids, died May 29, 2002 at his home.
He retired Sept. 1, 2001 from Consumers Energy after 31 years as an internal auditor. He graduated from the University of Detroit and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity. He was president of the Consumer Power Softball League and a member of the Jackson Area Antique Tractor Club. He volunteered for the United Way and was a 4-H leader. He shared his love of boating, fishing, woodworking and auto restoration with everyone. He often donated his skills as a craftsman and was very proud of a showcase he built for Western Michigan University's School of Music.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon E. (Richmond); children, Jennifer A. (Brian M. ) Lang of Kalamazoo and Jill L. VanConant of Kalamazoo; sister, Janet J. Foster of Elk Rapids; uncle, Darrel (Linda) VanConant of Plymouth; many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins; and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris C. and Mary Jean (Morrison) VanConant; and one brother, John C. VanConant.

William John Van der Zee

William John van der Zee, 74, of Lapeer (formerly of Oxford and Pontiac), died May 29, 2002.
He was born June 15, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., to Willem and Grace (Mieras) van der Zee. He married Doris Everson at the United Presbyterian Church in Pontiac on Aug. 2, 1952.
He graduated from Pontiac High School in 1945. He served his country at the end of World War II in the Navy. He was a senior design engineer at Pontiac Engineering and retired in 1986 after 31 years of service. He was always active in local community organizations, particularly in the Pontiac area. He was a past board member of Camp Fire-North Oakland Council and a member of the Pontiac Civitan Club. He was a member of the Lapeer County Historical Society and also named to the Historic District Study Committee by the City of Lapeer.
He is survived by his wife, Doris van der Zee; daughter, Elizabeth van der Zee-Mascharka of Ann Arbor; grandson, Andrew William; brother-in-law, Robert (Janet) Everson of Troy; and niece, Emily (Clint) Crook of Waterford.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
