Rita Marie Stewart, 77, of Capac, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at her daughter's home following a short illness.
She was born May 28, 1925, in Detroit to William and Alta Pine Abke. She married Robert Stewart on Oct. 31, 1945, in Ohio.
She is survived by her husband, Robert of Capac; daughters, Rita (Dave) Slone of Capac, Kathleen (Edwin) Barber of Lapeer and Colleen (Charles) Vincent of Mount Morris; sons, Albert (Pagall) of Oakland Township and Michael (Tina) of Rochester Hills; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, sister, Vera Willhite of Kalkaska; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Robert in 1996; a sister and two brothers.
Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Water Hospice.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 30) at Kaatz Funeral Home. The Rev. Mark W. Hetzner of St. Thomas Lutheran Church, East Pointe, will officiate. Burial will be in Capac cemetery.

Donald Dewey Pierson

Donald Dewey Pierson, 93, of Lapeer, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003.
He was born July 22, 1909, in Hadley to Dewey and Donna (Swett) Pierson. He married Betty Salisbury on Sept. 1, 1962, in Lapeer.
He graduated in 1928 from Hadley High School. He was a farmer and truck driver for Blue Arrow Douglas Trucking Company for over 20 years, retiring in 1966. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, lawn work, crafts and traveling. He attended Calvary Bible Church and had been a deacon at Hadley Community Church.
He is survived by his children, Janet (Dick) Rhein of Lapeer, Charles (Judy) Pierson of Melborne, Fla., Joyce (Harold) Tripp of Lapeer, Joan (Gerry) Broecker of Lapeer, Ronald (Leah) Schroeder of Attica, Wayne Schroeder of Indiana and Marilyn (Tim) Coulter of Lapeer; numerous grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren; sister, Reva Austin of North Branch; and brother, Dewey Pierson of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ateline Pierson in 1960; his parents; and siblings, Robert, Ronald, Roderick, Mabel Miller and Marion Warren.
Funeral services were Tuesday (Jan. 28) at Calvary Bible Church, Lapeer. The Rev. Arnold Bracy officiated. Burial was in Green Corners cemetery, Hadley.

Marshall Heverly

Marshall "Scott" Heverly, 44, of Lapeer (formerly of Lake Orion), died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003.
He was born Jan. 16, 1959 to Marshall and Betty (Williams) Heverly. He married Sue Anker on Feb. 14, 1979.
He was a the owner of Green Turf Landscaping in Lapeer.
He is survived by his wife, Sue of Lapeer; children, Kaylin and Troy of Lapeer; mother, Betty Heverly; sisters, Cathy (Leo) Thorlakson and Betsy (Vern) White; brother, Dale (Gayle) Heverly; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Marshall Heverly.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marshall Scott Heverly Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Lapeer County Bank and Trust.
Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 30) at the Lapeer Country Club 3786 Hunt Road, Lapeer.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Lapeer Country Club. The Rev. Todd Smith will officiate. A luncheon will immediately follow the service.
Arilla M. Betker

Arilla M. Betker, 91, of Almont, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003.
She was born July 11, 1911, in Avoca to William and Carrie (Wanklin) Bricker. She married Frank Betker on Oct. 28, 1934.
She worked at Bischacks Restaurant in Almont, the Chuck Wagon in Dryden and at Lovell's Country Corner in Almont.
She is survived by her sons, Howard (Carol) of Almont and Elroy (Carol) of Attica; grandchildren, Jennifer (Gene) Rosati of Emmett, Andy Betker of Almont, Lewis (Dawn) Betker of Imlay City, Marjorie (Jimmy) Williamson of Dryden, David (Gordana) Betker of Lapeer, John Betker of Almont, Frank Betker of Almont, Gayle (Brian) Sadler of Ortonville, Lynn (Kevin) Wilson of Rapid City, S.D., Dean Betker of Attica and Sam (Kim) Betker of Holly; 12 great-grandchildren and a sister, Lyetta Stanlake of Lapeer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Betker; parents, one granddaughter; brothers, Wilfred Bricker and Arthur Bricker; and sister, Anita Shaw.
Funeral services were Wednesday (Jan. 29) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Almont. The Rev. Tom Shannon of the Restored Life Church, Lapeer, officiated. Burial was in Hough cemetery, Almont.

Alberta Sherry

Alberta Sherry, 93, of Dryden (formerly of Warren), died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003.
She was born Aug. 18, 1909, in Alpena to William and Clementine (Sprage) Brandenburg.
She worked many years at the Chrysler Plant in Detroit. She also worked for Robinson's Furniture in Detroit for several years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
She is survived by her daughter, Delores Bmabic of Dryden; daughter-in-law, Betty Socia of Rogers City; step-children, Michael Sherry of Warren, Donald Sherry of Warren, Gerald Sherry of Warren and Carol Abdelnour of Dearborn; 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Delos Socia in 1954; second husband, Michael Sherry in 1993; son, Donald Socia in 1989; son-in-law, William Bmabic in 1999; sisters, Mabel and Marilyn; and brother, Charlie.
Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church Building Fund in Dryden.
Funeral services were Monday (Jan. 27) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Steven Helms officiated. Burial was in Roseland Park cemetery, Royal Oak.

Mildred E. Johnson

Mildred E. Johnson, of Lapeer, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003.
She was born Jan. 24, 1915, in Clifford to Ray and Elsie (Raybolt) Lyman. The family moved to Lapeer in 1922. She graduated from Lapeer High School in 1933. She married Max Johnson in 1937.
She served as president of the American Legion Auxiliary in 1956-57. She was a member of the Michigan Register of Deeds Association and served as president in 1973-74. She was the Register of Deeds for Lapeer County for 17 years, having worked in that office for 11 years prior to being elected Register of Deeds. She was also a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Organization and the Thumb Area Sweet Adelines Chorus.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Jack) Sweeney; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughters, Kay Lynne (Bliss) O'Brien and Karen McCarthy; parents, brother, Lester Lyman; and sisters, Leona Walker and Doris Willis.
Funeral services were Friday (Jan. 24) at Baird-Newton Funeral Home, Lapeer. The Rev. Peter DeKlerk officiated. Burial was in Stiles cemetery, Mayfield Township.

Gerald Freeman

Gerald "Jerry" Freeman, 71, of Flint, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Genesys Health Park in Grand Blanc.
He was born March 26, 1931, in Anderson, Ind., to Daniel and Clara (Hilligoss) Freeman.
He was employed by Pacific Bell Telephone Co. He attended Bentley Wesleyan Church for eight years.
He is survived by his fiancee, Lois Borst; step-children, one son, four daughters, seven grandchildren; sisters, Genevieve Wantowski, Winnifred (Barry) Yoder and Clara Schweihofer; and 15 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; parents; and sister, Patty Hubbard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alhzeimer's Association.
Funeral services were Saturday (Jan. 25) at Allen Funeral Home, Davison. The Revs. Walt Reynolds and Roger P. VanDonkelaar officiated. Burial was in Mount Pleasant cemetery, Dryden.

Mary Pauline White

Mary Pauline White, 88, of Imlay City, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at home.
She was born Feb. 8, 1914, in Mexico, to Cipriano and Merejilda Morales. She married Clarence Edgar White on March 21, 1937, in Goodells.
She lived most of her life in the Imlay City area. She had been employed as a nurse's aide at the Lapeer County Medical Care Facility (Suncrest) in Lapeer for 27 years. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Imlay City and the Sunshine Sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence White of Imlay City; daughters, Mary Dobson of Lapeer, Delores (Adam) Roblodo of Sanger, Calif., and Lupe (Bill) Teague of Waco, Texas; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and a sister, Jennie Gerow of Twining.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cipriano and Merejilda Morales; brothers, Alex "John" Morales and Ray Morales; and son-in-law, James W. Dobson on May 10, 2002.
Funeral services were Friday (Jan. 24) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Imlay City. The Rev. Alan Casillas officiated. Burial was in Imlay Township cemetery, Imlay City.
