John F. Krout

Age: 80
Flushing
John F. "Jack" Krout, 80, of Flushing, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at home with family, following complications from emphysema and lung cancer.
He was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Rhinelander, Wis. He married Ruth Zaliagiris of Detroit.
His parents and siblings moved to Gladstone in 1926, where he lived for 74 years. Following his graduation from Gladstone High School, he entered the Army and served under the command of General George S. Patton, who presented him with the Bronze Star for meritorious service. His unit landed at Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion and he was one of the first Americans to enter and liberate prisoners held at the Buchenwald Concentration Camp. After his discharge, he returned to Gladstone, where he was employed by the Soo Line Railroad Co. as a fireman-engineer until retirement in 1982. He was a parishioner at All Saints Catholic Church and was a member of the August Mattson American Legion Post 71. He was active in fund-raising and initial construction efforts for the development of the Legion's Little League Baseball facility in Gladstone. He and Ruth moved to Flushing several years ago to be closer to their children and other family members.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth; children, Michele George of Bridge City, Texas, Joan (Bill) Aue of Owosso, John (Nancy) of Holland, Barb (Scott) DePree of Lapeer and Isabel (Michael) Mondelli of Flushing; 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, sister, Virginia Noreus of Gladstone; brother, Francis "Bud" of Gladstone; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Cleve and Isabell Krout; and brothers, Cleve Jr. and Oakley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church or the Genesys Home Health Care and Hospice Program.
Cremation has taken place.
A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday (Feb. 8) at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley Ave., Flint. Burial will be later this year at the Gardens of Rest cemetery, Escanaba.

Emily Stoll
Died: Thursday, January 30, 2003
North Branch
Emily Stoll, 93, of North Branch, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.
She was born Oct. 14, 1909, to John and Emilie (Schempf) Stoll.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lapeer.
She is survived by her brother, Raymond (Virginia) Stoll of Columbiaville; sisters, Hilda Tank of Pontiac and Tillie (Don) Smith of Engadine; nieces and nephews, Alvin Tank, Diane Tyson, Sharon Ashley, Larry Smith, David Stoll; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Emilie Stoll; brothers, Alexander Stoll and Ronald Stoll; and sister, Mary Stoll.
Funeral services were Monday (Feb. 3) at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lapeer. The Revs. John Kaiser and Mark Gilson officiated. Burial was in Rich Township cemetery.

C. J. Swoish

North Branch
C.J. Swoish, 81, of North Branch, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Marlette Hospice Residence.
He was born Jan 17, 1922, in North Branch to Christian and Caroline (Nellenbach) Swoish. He married Blanche Reynolds on Jan. 19, 1952 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Burnside Township.
He was a lifelong resident of North Branch and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a farmer his entire life, and enjoyed his antique tractors. All of his children continue to live on the Swoish Farm.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche; daughter, Judy (Lou) Stalker of North Branch; sons, Al (Linda) of North Branch and Gary (Jane) of North Branch; grandchildren, Caneda Stalker of Alma, Nathaniel Stalker of Redford, Rodney Stalker, Jon Stalker and Timothy Stalker, Caryn (Kurt) Knappen, Christina (Joe) McCalla, Michael Swoish, Alicia Swoish, Travis (Jennifer) Swoish, Jacob Swoish, Katie Swoish, Ben Swoish, Chris Swoish and Matt Swoish, all of North Branch; great-granddaughter, Emilee Knappen of North Branch; brother, Leo (Violet) Swoish of North Branch; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marlette United Hospice or St. Mary's Catholic Church.
A Funeral Mass was Saturday (Feb. 1) at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery. The Rev. Lawrence Dunn officiated.

Edward E. Fleming

Edward E. Fleming, 62, of Lapeer-Metamora, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003.
He was born Oct. 6, 1940, in Lapeer County to Harry and Arlene (Starking) Fleming.
He belonged to the Boy Scouts for more than 56 years, devoting his time to the Tall Pine Counsel in Blue Heron District for 16 years. His recognition was received in the state and national Achievement Awards.
He is survived by his children, April Fleming of North Carolina and Greg Fleming of Lapeer; three grandchildren, sisters, Wilma Fleming of Lapeer, Linda Fleming of Davison and Fran (Ralph) Schroeder of Lapeer; brothers, Keith Fleming of Metamora and Richard (Dorothy) Fleming of Attica; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as many friends from the Boy Scouts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Arlene; step-father, Lawrence Davenport; and his grandparents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Camp Holanka Boy Scouts Camp.
Funeral services were Saturday (Feb. 1) at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Lapeer. The Rev. Colin Stover officiated with State Representative John Stahl co-officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery, Lapeer.

Harry A. VanSipe, 84, of Metamora, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at home.
He was born July 10, 1918, in Alpena.
He retired from the Chrysler Tank Arsenal after 30 years of service as a tool and die maker.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Beatrice VanSipe; children, Margie (Pat) Griffin, Charlie, Ted (Wendy) and Barb (Terry) Medlock; nine grandchildren and three great-grandsons.
Cremation already has taken place.

Barbara Kalanquin, of Davison, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Genesys Health Park in Grand Blanc.
She was born Dec. 4, 1920.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin Kalanquin; son, Ron (Yolanda) Kalanquin; daughter, Barbara (Gary) Baldwin; grandchildren, Ron Kalanquin Jr., Tanya Brooks and Angie Baldwin; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Armand Baldwin.

Clara Z. Sedlow, 102, of Urbana, Ohio, died Monday, Jan. 27. 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, Ohio.
She was born Aug. 28, 1900, in Thomas to Morris and Ety (King) Smith.
She attended the First Baptist Church of Urbana.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Gorby of Urbana; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, H. Clifford Diehl; second husband, Stanley Sedlow; parents, step-father, M.L. Anderson; son, Elwyn C. Diehl; sisters, Marguerite Coulter, Lucy Hovey and Doris Fritch; and brother, Luther (Pat) Anderson.

Mary Ann Elizabeth Smith, 80, of Colorado (formerly of Metamora), died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003.
She was the former proprietor of the White Horse Inn, in Metamora.
She is survived by her children, Gregory Levi (Sharon) Clark of Michigan, Danny W. Smith of Colorado, Maureen E. (Brian) Chandler of Colorado, Patrick X. (Linda) Smith of Colorado and Sarah Laurie (Morgan) Smith of Montana; sisters, Francis Manuel of South Carolina, Patricia Kyle of Michigan, Margaret Roe of Illinois; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Levi Keefer Clark and Lawrence William Smith; and sister, Nancy Chartrand.
A Mass of Christian burial was Saturday (Feb. 1) at Mount Olivet cemetery.
