Ray Miller
Ray E. Miller, 64, of Interlochen passed away on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006, at his home.
Born on Oct. 10, 1942, in South Boardman, he was the son of the late Lee and Emma (Hoppe) Miller.
Ray was a veteran serving our country in the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong resident of Kalkaska and Grand Traverse counties.
Ray was a truck driver until retirement. He enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing, camping and metal work. Ray loved his family and grandchildren.
He was a member of the VFW Post No. 8684 in Kalkaska and the Eagles in Interlochen.
Surviving Ray are his children, Steven R. (Tracie) Miller, Luke (Susan) Miller and Lena Thompson, all of South Boardman; step-children, Todd Lewis and Melanie Sanborn of Traverse City, and Shane Lewis of Indiana; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; siblings, Glen Miller and Sandi Hall of South Boardman, Ivan Miller of Indiana, Karen McNamara of Kalkaska, Christine Doval of Alaska, Russell Young of Monroe, Gary Young of Lapeer and William Young of Pontiac.
Preceding Ray in death was his daughter, Linda Marie Miller; and his sister, Janet Klann.
A memorial service honoring Ray's life was set for Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. at Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home in Kalkaska. The VFW Post No. 8684 and the Beebe Sherwood Post No. 480 will be providing military honors. Burial will be at Boardman Township cemetery.

Arlene McMichael
Arlene A. McMichael, of South Boardman, passed away on Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at Bortz Nursing Home in Traverse City.
Born on Jan. 6, 1924, in Hamburg, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Henrietta (Bennett) Lear.
Arlene married Paul F. McMichael on June 17, 1944, in Hamburg. Together, they have been residents of South Boardman since 1972 moving from Dexter.
Arlene was a member of the Kalkaska United Methodist Church. She enjoyed being a homemaker and loved her family immensely.
Surviving Arlene is her husband, Paul, of 62 years; children, Paul R. McMichael of South Boardman, Donna Valentine of North Carolina, Linda Magee of Mancelona and Wendy Wagenschutz of Thomasville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Hazel Alberts of Kalkaska.
The funeral service was held on Friday, Sept. 1 at Wolfe-O'Neill Funeral Home in Kalkaska, with Pastor Bob Stark officiating from the Kalkaska United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Lodi cemetery.
Memorials may be given in behalf of Arlene to the Kalkaska County Commission on Aging, 303 S. Coral St., Kalkaska, Mich. 49646

Amy Courtney
Amy Courtney, 93, of Boyne City died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2006 at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan. Rev. David L. Behling officiated. Interment will be in Maple Lawn cemetery in Boyne City.
Amy was born on Sept. 19, 1912, in Logan Township, Mich., the daughter of Albert and Augusta (Pillsbury) Wilber. On Sept. 27, 1930, in Boyne City, she married George Courtney. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Amy had worked as a restaurant cook for many years. She later worked and retired from Essex in Boyne City. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Boyne City. Amy enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, baking and traveling. She also enjoyed the Boyne City Fire Department Country Western Shows at the Boyne City High School.
Amy is survived by one son-in-law, Marlin (Ellie) Eaton of Boyne City; two granddaughters, Cindy (Mark) Wuerth and Linda (Scott) Hausler, both of Boyne City; three great-grandchildren, Kurt Wuerth, Elliot Hausler and Mary Hausler, all of Boyne City; and one sister, Helen Moore of Manistee. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Eaton, her parents and nine siblings.
The family received friends at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan. Memorials may be given to Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.
Brenda Cool
Brenda S. Cool, 52, of Mancelona, died on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006, at her home.
Brenda was born on Dec. 30, 1953, in Lansing, Mich., the daughter of Charlie and Blanche (Fry) Vandergriff.
She was an active member of the Antrim Church of Christ in Mancelona and was involved in the street ministry.
She was a Mancelona area resident for many years where she was a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed collecting angels and most of all spending time with her grandchildren and many friends.
On Jan. 15, 1977, in Boyne City she married Norman G. Cool who survives. Also surviving are four children, Chris Cool of Mancelona, Christina Cool of Kalkaska, Michael (Kristine) Cool of Bellaire, Michelle Cool of Mancelona, three step children, Norman Cool, Betty Wilson, and Daniel Cool, all of Petoskey, a brother Ron (Judy) Vandergriff of Washington, Nancy (Rollin) Nice of Grawn, Cindy (Bob) Workman of Fremont, 6 grandchildren, numerous step grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services took place on Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Antrim Church of Christ in Mancelona. Pastor Mark McCool and Pastor Drew Filkins officiated.
Interment was in Fairview cemetery in Mancelona. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
John W. Carmichael
John W. Carmichael, 79, of Coldwater, Mich., died Aug. 31, 2006, at the Laurels of Coldwater. He was born Nov. 1, 1926, to Timothy C. and Hulda (Montgomery) Carmichael in
Mancelona, Mich. He had been a resident of the Coldwater area for over 30 years.
John had been a builder and an architect in northern Michigan, he retired as Director of Michigan Regional Housing-Branch County and after retiring built original wood furniture.
He is survived by two sons; Timothy J. (Bonnie) Carmichael of Sturgis, and Martin (Wanda) Carmichael of Albert, Colo.; two daughters; Valarie Peterson of Eagle, Colo., and Brenda Carmichael of Sturgis, 11 grandchildren and his former wife Joanne Carmichael of Sturgis.
Preceding him in death were a son; Mark W., a daughter; Teresa Goebel, a brother and a sister. No visitation or services are scheduled. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Joseph Community Cooperative, 100 E. Chicago Road, Suite 100, Sturgis, Mich., 49091. This is a program for assisting the mentally disabled.

Marguerite Childers
Marguerite Childers, 83, of Central Lake, formerly of Lewiston and Ortonville, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2006, at her daughter's house.
She was the daughter of Shelton and Etta (Moore) Deaton in Breathitt Co., Ky., on April 20, 1923.
In 1934, Marguerite moved with her family to Rochester, Mich. On Oct. 6, 1941, she married the love of her life, Russel. They started their own family and in 1952 moved to Ortonville where they resided for 30 years. Marguerite was an active member in the Ports Southen Baptist Church of Ortonville and enjoyed quilting. When Russel retired they moved to Lewiston and then to Central Lake in 1994 to be closer to her family.
Marguerite loved her family. She loved big family gatherings with her children, grandchildren and close friends. She especially loved the children and they loved her too.
She was a caring, kind and generous mother, grandmother, wife, aunt, and friend who will be greatly missed by all.
Preceding her in death were her husband Russel of 54 years, two infant daughters, Della Rae and Patricia Ann, her parents, six brothers, Sam, Ed, Wes, Roy, Berle, and Waldo and one sister Wanda.
She is survived by her children, Glenda (Earl) Simonson of Central Lake, Russel "Danny" (Sandra) of Amasa, Mich., Richard (Sharon) of Mio, Cassandra "Sandy" Patterson of Central Lake, and Roderick (Cindy) of Ortonville , Twenty grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at 2 p.m. at the Deaton Funeral Home in Jackson, Ky. Interment will take place in Childers cemetery, the family cemetery, in Wide Creek, Ky.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Northwest Michigan.
Arrangements are being handled by Deaton Funeral Home in Jackson, Kentucky with local arrangements by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
Ronald E. Gilbert
Ronald E. Gilbert, 70, of Bellaire, died Monday morning, Aug. 28, 2006, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born May 5, 1936, in Detroit, he was the son of the late Emerson M. and Roberta (Garlick) Gilbert. On Feb. 8, 1958, in Dearborn, he married the former Lee A. Cragg who survives.
Ron graduated in 1964 from Western Michigan University with a mechanical engineering degree. For 28 years he owned and operated Crankshaft Form Tool Co. of Plymouth. Moving to Bellaire in 1987 from Dearborn, Ron and his wife Lee opened the L and R True Value Hardware. Due to health reasons Ron retired from the hardware in 1995.
A member of the First Congregational Church of Central Lake, Ron was particularly fond of the men's bible study group. He also was a past president of the Bellaire Lions Club, a past member of the Dearborn Kiwanis Club, the Cutting Tool Association and the Society of Mechanical Engineers.
An avid hunter, Ron enjoyed the out-of-doors especially here in the north.
Surviving along with his wife, Lee, are his sons, William M. of Grayling and David R. of Bellaire, his daughter, Lori B. Harhold of Bellaire; a twin brother Donald C. of Bellaire; and two grandchildren, Clayton L. and Jaelyn A. Harhold.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Aug. 30 at the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Donald E. Gordon officiating. Cremains burial took place in the family plot in Belleville.
