Kathleen Stimpson
"`Miss Sunshine' will be forever missed,'" was the comment from a long-time boating friend Kathy Willnow.
Kathleen had a contagious smile and keen intellect; these were just two of the traits that made her such a fun person to be with.
This happy, loving lady will be sorely missed. Kathy, 61, died of metastasized breast cancer to the bone and brain on Aug. 22, 2006, at Joanne's Hope Hospice of Bonita Springs, Fla., with her family at her side.
Her cousin, Linda Jensen, said, "Kathy's quality features blossomed very young. She was highly intelligent, talented, had a great sense of humor, was honest, loyal, responsible, ambitious, and had a very loving nature. All these traits seemed to get only stronger through age and maturity. She was fiercely proud and loving of her family."
Born in Flint on Sept. 13, 1944, the daughter of Donald and Ruth (Havers) Parkhurst, Kathy attended Flint Central High School where she was in the top percentile of her class. During high school she taught music, both piano and accordion. Kathleen further attended and performed at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in both piano and voice.
She graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in education and returned to teach history in some of the needier neighborhoods of Flint. She loved teaching and the challenges of high school students. While working at General Motors, at a summer position, she met her future husband, John G. Stimpson, who was in a management training program.
They were married in 1969 and made their home in Birmingham. John entered the investment management field and Kathy taught high school in Birmingham and then again in Brunswick, Ohio, following a business move. After the birth of son John in 1972, and twins, Robert and Michael in 1973, the family moved to London, England. After 9 years in London they returned to America, moving to Greenwich, Ct.
In Greenwich, Kathy was active at Burning Tree C.C., several Bridge groups, and was a deacon at the Second Congressional Church, while the children attended The Brunswick School, where she was a frequent volunteer.
From a teacher to mother she raised three successful sons. She loved to cook, golf, boat, travel, and enjoyed friends and family. She loved animals; always making sure the family was not without a kitten and a fuzzy dog for 37 years.
Marcia Newkirk, who traveled and boated with Kathy remembers, "Spending times with Kathy was like being with a ray of sunshine. Her smile and laughter were infectious as were her enthusiasm and zest for life. She was the ultimate caretaker. I cherish the time we spent together and the wonderful memories we shared."
Kathy Stimpson is survived by her husband, John; sons, John (Kate) grandson Matthew of Hong Kong, China; also Robert (Hilary) granddaughter Ella of Akron, Ohio, and Michael (Stacie) of Dallas, Texas, and her brother John Roy (Beth) Parkhurst of Murphy, Texas.
