Mildred Cole
Mildred Cole, 89, of Elk Rapids, died Feb. 24, 2005. She was born Oct. 2, 1915 in Milton Township to James and Katherine (Easley) McLain. On Nov. 25, 1933 she married William Charles in Elk Rapids. He preceded her in death.
Mildred was employed as a Michigan Bell operator, also working for Dalquist Dime Store, J.C. Penney Co., Elk River Inn, and Chuck's Gas Station. She was a member of the Eastern Star #326, past grand officer; member of Meguzee, past worthy matron; and a life member of VFW Post 6507 Ladies Auxiliary in Chassell, Mich.
Mildred loved to play cards, knit, crochet, garden, and was a great baker.
Survivors include her daughters, Patricia (Don) Reed and Jayne (Lawrence) Tilley son, William Charles (Sunny) Cole; sister, Evelyn (Clare) Easley; sister-in-law, Sylvia Cole; grandchildren William Cole, Monica Veltkamp, Cole Reed, Chan Reed, Tim Tilley and Corey Tilley; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Charles; son, James; parents; and brothers, James and Versil.
Visitation and Eastern Star services were held on Feb. 26. Funeral services took place on Feb. 27 at Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids, with the Rev. Dr. Dan Herlein of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids. Arrangements were entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids.
Rev. Barney D. Roepcke
Rev. Barney D. Roepcke, 90, of Grand Rapids, died on February 22, 2005. He was preceded in death by his brother, Norwood Roepcke and two sisters, Margaret Hopper and Wilhelmina Eder.
Surviving are his wife, Lois; daughter, Karen Kooistra; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Gail Roepcke; grandsons, Cory and David Roepcke all of Grand Rapids; his brother and sister-in-law, Fay and Almeda Roepcke of Sun City West, Ariz.; and his sister-in-law, Betty Dyer of Unadilla, Mich.
Rev. Roepcke was a graduate of Alma College and McCormick Seminary. During his ministry he served the Orchard Lake Community (Presbyterian) Church, First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo, North Park Presbyterian Church of Grand Rapids, and First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids. An important part of his ministry was his work with young people. He served as Presbytery Advisor, and later Synod Advisor to Westminster Fellowship. He spent at least one week every summer as leader or director of a camp or conference.
A loving husband and father, and a loyal friend, he found great joy in his faith, and was a devoted pastor. His beautiful garden, and attractive wood carvings are evidence of his two favorite hobbies.
A memorial service was held last Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids with his good friend and colleague, the Rev. Dr. Allan J. Weenink officiating.

John I. Borst
John I. Borst, 84, of Alba died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
He was born on Feb. 14, 1921 in Star Township the son of William and Hatti (Hawley) Borst.
He was a lifelong resident of Alba and was employed by the East Jordan Iron Works for many years.
He was a member of the Alba United Methodist Church as well as the Alba Sportsman Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.
He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On Jan. 12, 1946 in Bellaire, he married June Strickland who survives. Also surviving are six children, Marlene (Gary) Bowen of Mancelona, Mick (Barbara) Borst of Gaylord, Clarice (Robert) Beckner of Alba, Sonja (Lynn) Handrich of Fairview, Peggy (Chris) Botens of Waters and John (Marlayna) Borst of Mancelona.
Also surviving are a sister, Betty (William) Drenth of Mancelona, 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, George, Alvin, Marvin, William and Lloyd and three sisters, Iva, Iola and Rose.
Funeral services were held on Feb. 26 at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The Rev. Kathy Steen officiated
Interment will take place in Star Township cemetery in Alba in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alba Sportsman Club, the Alba Public Schools Sign Fund or the alba Memorial Park.
Jerome `Jerry' Conway
Jerome "Jerry" Conway of Mancelona passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005. There was a death notice in the Feb. 16 addition of the Antrim County News, and some of the family felt he deserved more than that.
Jerry was a great, kind-hearted guy. He loved the outdoors. He also loved to fish. He was a very hard worker all his life. Jerry was full of life and had a terrific sense of humor. He loved his children, grandchildren, and family very much.
Jerry is survived by his son, Karl (Denise) Juhasz of Highland, Ind.; daughter, Kristine (Mark) Robbins of Mancelona, and son, Ken (Shannon) Juhasz of Bellaire. Jerry also has two sons Jerry and James Conway of Florida. He has 12 wonderful grandchildren, twp of which he was very close with, Melissa and Amanda Robbins of Mancelona. He also has a great-grandson Haden Zirkle of Kalkaska. He has one brother, Ron Conway of Bellaire and five sisters, Anna Brown of Texas, Geraldine (Hank) Deater of Mancelona, Valerie (Ron) Usher of Auburn Hills, Bonnie Conway of Auburn Hills, and Pat Conway of Mancelona. Along with several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome Sr. and Eleanor Conway, and his sister, Betty Jelsin. Also wife Diane, daughter Donna Marie, and two sons Jo-lou and Eric.
No services are planned at this time.
Leona May Ross
Leona May Ross of Bellaire passed away Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at Meadow Brook Care Facility.
She was born Jan. 8, 1937 in Omer, the daughter of Tomas and Amanda Mogg.
She worked for many years in the restaurant business. She was a great cook and baker.
Leona was a kind, caring and giving person. She was always willing to help anyone out. She was also a great mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by many.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, including her twin brother Leo Mogg.
She is survived by three children, son Mark (Nancy) Sulz of Central Lake, daughter Brenda Kiessel of Central Lake, and son Eric Sulz of Bellaire; five grandchildren, Steven Sulz of East Jordan, Adam and Nathon Marsh of Central Lake, Dalton Sulz of Bellaire, Victoria Sulz of Central Lake; one stepdaughter, Hanah Gregory of Ann Arbor; and one great-granddaughter, Thamia Sulz of East Jordan.
There will be a memorial service at a later date and will be announced.
Her children would like to deeply thank the staff of Meadow Brook for all the great care they gave our mother. The kindness and care you gave to our mother will never be forgotten. Memorial contributions may be made to Meadow Brook Care Facility.
Marjorie A. Bell Dachtler
Marjorie A. Bell Dachtler, 95, of Bellaire died late Thursday night, Feb. 24, 2005, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
Born March 29, 1909 in Portsmouth, Iowa, she was the daughter of Walter and Madge (White) Bell. On Dec. 31, 1930 in Harlan, Iowa, she married William C. Dachtler who died in 1988.
Marjorie was a graduate of Iowa State University. A homemaker, she was an avid reader and was fond of gardening. She moved to Bellaire in 1996 coming from Kimberling City, Mo.
Marjorie is survived by two daughters, Roxanne Wilson of New Orleans and Sally Rodgers of Eastport; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death, along with her husband, were her parents; a sister, Louise, at birth; an infant son, William Lee Dachtler; and a son-in-law, Robert T. Rodgers.
Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held in the spring at the Kimberling City cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the animal welfare group of one's choice or to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.

Dr. Robert E. Bogue
Dr. Robert E. Bogue, 91, of Bellaire died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at his home.
Born Jan. 15, 1914 in Amherst, Mass., he was the son of Robert H. and Bernice (Newhall) Bogue. On Aug. 6, 1937 in Bellaire he married the former Charlotte Johnston who died in 1995.
Dr. Bogue was a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School. He practiced at Grace Hospital in Detroit before entering private practice as an OB/GYN physician in Detroit. He moved to Bellaire upon his retirement in 1979.
Dr. Bogue was a member of the American Medical Association; American College of OB/GYN's; Central Association of OB/GYN's; Michigan State Medical Society; and the Wayne County Medical Society. He was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Detroit.
Preceding Dr. Bogue in death, along with his wife, were his parents; son-in-law, Jerry Smith, in 1972; and his sister, Verne Gile, in 2000.
He is survived by son, Robert D. (Jani) Bogue of Bartlesville, Okla.; daughter, Katherine Smith of Alma; three grandchildren, Robert Jeremy, Shannon (Jon) Murton, and Katherine (Michael) Millar; three great-granddaughters, Michaela, Katie and Marysol; one great-grandson, Keenan; and many nieces and nephews.
Per Dr. Bogue's wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held in the spring at Lakeview cemetery in Bellaire. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grass River Natural Area, PO Box 231, Bellaire, MI 49615.

George M. Finch
George M. Finch, 88, of Central Lake died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at his home.
He was born on March 18, 1916 in Custer Township, the son of Charles and Jessie (Pickard) Finch.
He was a resident of Antrim County his entire life. He was employed by Lamina Bronze in Bellaire for many years.
He enjoyed farming and operated a foster home in Central Lake for many years.
On Sept. 24, 1937 in Bellaire he married Alma Shonk who survives. Also surviving are two sons, George Finch of Bear Lake, William Finch of Soldotna, Alaska; three daughters, Delores (David) O'Dell of Soldotna, Alaska, Faye (John) Kirkpatrick of Bellaire and Susie. Also surviving are a brother Francis Finch of Traverse City; one sister, Erma (William) Best of Ellsworth; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were a son, Marvin "Bud" Finch, three brothers, Elgy, Lloyd and Herbert Finch, four sisters, Marjorie Paige, Tressie Brace, Lois Vanniman, Ione Hart and his parents.
Funeral services were held on Feb. 26 at the Bellaire Wesleyan Church. The Rev. Steve Eccles and the Rev. Chris Wallace officiated. Interment will take place in Southern cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellaire Wesleyan Church.

Michael Alan Moore
Michael Alan Moore, Sr., 50, of Boyne City died early Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Northern Michigan Hospital.
Michael was born on April 25, 1954 in Grand Rapids the son of Harold and Margaret (Washburn) Moore. He married Marsha Ferris in 1973.
Michael served in the United States Army for three years. He worked for Matelski Lumber Company for the past 17 years. Michael enjoyed fishing and taking walks, over the past several years he really loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Michael is survived by his wife Marsha Moore; son Michael and Jessica (Bunting) Moore; two grandchildren, Emily and Alexander; five brothers, Roy (Jane) Moore of Texas, Mark (Laurie) Moore of Boyne City, Steve (Rhonda) Moore of Mancelona, Marty (Theresa) Moore of Florida, and Harold (Jessica) Moore, Jr. of Boyne City; five sisters, Pam (Robert) Roberts of East Jordan, Penny (Rick) Richards of Boyne Falls, Debra (Lee) Loebiq of Florida, Christine Adame of Florida, Alica (Monty) Loper of Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews.
Michael is preceded in death by his father Harold in February of 1993; mother Margaret in December of 2000; and grandson Dominic Michael Kitson in March of 1992.
Per Michael's request cremation has take place and no services are planned at this time. The family would like to thank all the people of Northern Michigan Hospital, especially Dr. Heise, Dr Griffin and all of the third floor staff for your support and kindness.
