Raymond L. Carnes
Raymond L. Carnes, 87, of Bellaire died Friday evening, Jan. 23, 2004, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
Born Jan. 26, 1916 in Meadville, Penn., he was the son of Norman and Cora (Zuber) Carnes.
On Oct. 7, 1942, in Lucas County, Ohio, he married the former Grace Johnson who survives.
Raymond worked for many years for the Farmer's Insurance Group, retiring as district manager in Oakland County. He and his wife moved to their home at Deepwater Point from Union Lake 29 years ago.
A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and golfing. He was a member of the Central Lake Bible Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Ruth Worthley.
Surviving in addition to his wife Grace, is a son, Leonard R. Carnes of Holly; two granddaughters, Christine (David) Nicholie of Richmond, Texas and Susan (Matt) Bainbridge of Chesterfield; three great-grandchildren and a nephew.
Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at the Central Lake Bible Baptist Church with pastor Dr. Tom Hunter officiating. Burial was in Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens in Novi.
Memorial contributions in Raymond's name may be directed to the church. Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Lucille Adella Ayers
Lucille Adella Ayers, age 91, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004.
Born in Cadillac on Jan. 13, 1913, she was the daughter of Melvin and Ella Lockhart. Lucille was 6 years old when they moved to Eaton Rapids, then to Antrim County. Lucille had been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mancelona since 1960 and a faithful attendant of the First United Methodist Church of West Branch since 1993. She is also a past member of the Mancelona Eastern Star and the Mancelona Rebeccas.
On Sept. 30, 1928, she married Clifford James Ayers. They lived in Flint and Gaylord in several logging camps. They spent 11 years in East Jordan, and 46 years in Mancelona. Clifford and Lucille shared 64 years of marriage before Clifford passed away in 1993. She then moved to West Branch to live with her daughter Sheryl (Guy) Dean.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Victor (Diane) Ayers of Boyne City; son-in-law, John (Marge) Spohn of Petoskey; son, Gerald (Nancy) Ayers of Rockford; daughter, Gayla (William) Wolf of Quincy; and daughter, Sheryl (Guy) Dean of West Branch; 20 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Clifford Bud Ayers of Wixom; and a sister-in-law, June Boss of Ellsworth. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Clifford, in 1993 and daughter, Joyce, in 1994.
Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the First United Methodist Church in West Branch. Pastor John Spohn will officiate. Interment will be at Fairview cemetery, Mancelona.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, West Branch, Mich.

Robert J. Cole
Robert J. Cole, 70, of Gaylord and formerly of Twin Lakes, Mancelona, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004.
Mr. Cole was born in Northville on May 2,1933, and had been a longtime resident of the Northville area. He later moved to Mancelona where he owned The Hideaway Bar for 25 years. He had been living in Gaylord for a short time. Mr. Cole was a member of the Elks Lodge.
Visitation will be held at the Nelson Funeral Home,135 North Center, in Gaylord on Wednesday, Jan. 28, beginning at noon and concluding at 7 p.m. with an Elks Lodge memorial service.
Mr. Cole, a very devoted father, is survived by his children, Brad (Wendy) Cole of Northville, Melanie Cole of Northville, Guy Cole of Mancelona and Ty Cole of Howell; and several grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan (Gaylord area) through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, Mich., 49734.

Vincent Dietrich
Vincent P. Dietrich, 78, of Kalkaska, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2004, at his home.
Born on April 1, 1925, in Muskegon, he was the son of Edward and Mina (Langlois) Dietrich.
Vincent was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He married Jean Kluting on Sept. 2, 1946, in Conklin. Vincent and Jean moved to Kalkaska in 1973. He retired in 1987 from the Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. Vincent was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Kalkaska.
Vincent is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jean; his children, Voloyce (Gary) Grveneberg of Jerome, Ann (John) Schoenborn of Ravenna, Sid Dietrich of Conklin and Chuck (Susan) Dietrich of Kalkaska; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his brothers and sisters, Marie, Edward, Clara and Margaret.
Vincent was preceded in death by his parents, his son Chris Dietrich, and his daughter-in-law Terri Dietrich.
A memorial mass will be held on Monday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of the Woods.
Memorials may be given in behalf of Vincent Dietrich to Munson Hospice.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Hubert Tucker
Hubert M. "Tonto" Tucker, 71, of Kalkaska, passed away peacefully March 16, 2004, at his home.
He was born May 16, 1932, in Whitley City, Ky., where most of his family still resides.
Tonto loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fishermen. Every year he would plant a vegetable garden that was big enough to feed the whole town. He only lived in Kalkaska the past four years, but he made a lot of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Dillie Tucker; granddaughter, Brittney Chitwood; and son, Tony Tucker.
Surviving is his son, Terry (Kathy) Tucker; daughter, Melissa Chitwood; grandchildren, Robert J. Tucker, Ayla M. Tucker, Russell Chitwood and Todd Chitwood; brothers and sisters, Herbert, James, and Ralph Tucker and Evelyn Shepard and Tammy Walker.
He was really loved by all and will be missed forever by family and friends.
Services were held at Bear Lake Christian Church on Saturday, March 20, 2004.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

Samuel J. Persons
Samuel J. Persons died Monday, March 15, 2004 surrounded by his family after a two year battle with cancer.
A funeral service was held Thursday, March 18, at Boyne City United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Carl Litchfield officiated. Burial took place at Sunset Hill cemetery in East Jordan.
Samuel was born in East Jordan, the son of Lyle G. and Esther (Piggott) Persons, on Sept. 24, 1934.
Samuel will be sadly missed by his sons, Samuel L. Jr. (Pat) Persons of Grand Rapids, Bruce (Pam) Persons of East Jordan and one daughter, Sherry (Dan) Van Slyke; seven wonderful grandchildren who meant the world to him, Scott Persons, Jason, Jacob (Emma), and Justin Persons, Tricia (Dennis) Poll, Dan and Mark (Dawn) Van Slyke; three great-grandchildren, Bryant and Bryce Poll, Cameron Persons; one brother, Jim Persons of Florida; many nieces and nephews; and the love of his life, that he met again five years ago, Shirley, and her four children, 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, whom he loved and also will miss.
Samuel will also be missed by many friends and fishing buddies.
Samuel is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Family would like memorial contributions to be directed to Hospice of Michigan, 128 North Court St., Gaylord MI 49735.

Kristen Marie Cleary
Kristen Marie Cleary, 18, of Boyne City, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 18, 2004.
A Mass was held Monday, March 22, at the St. Matthews Catholic Church in Boyne City.
Kristen was born on July 3, 1985 in Petoskey, the beloved daughter of John D. and Marilyn (Kabat) Cleary. Kristen grew up in Boyne Falls and Boyne City. She graduated from Boyne City High School and was currently attending North Central Michigan College and was on the Dean's list. Kristen was a talented artist, writer of poetry, and a piano music composer. She could often be found reading her Bible or the Celestine Prophecies. Kristen loved animals and had a very gentle and kind nature.
Kristen is survived by her parents John and Marilyn; sister Joslyn (Daniel) Cleary Matelski, brother Justin D. (Jennifer) Cleary; her two nieces Sierra and Kaylle; two grandmothers, Margaret G. Cleary and Muriel Kabat; and many special aunts, uncles and friends.
The family has asked that memorial contributions be directed to an art scholarship fund to be established in Kristen's name, c/o her mother Marilyn Cleary, 390-F Drury Lane, Boyne City, MI 49712.
Kristen's loss will be felt by all and her family will miss her deeply, Kristen we will always love you.

Ardis Rose Lockman
Ardis Rose Lockman, 80, of Boyne City, died Friday, March 26, 2004 at her home.
Per her wishes, a family graveside service will be held later this spring.
Ardis was born in Charlevoix, on Nov. 26, 1923, the daughter of Lyle and Christine (Krulik) Kowalske.
When she was six years old, her family moved to Boyne City, where she attended Boyne City Schools, graduating in 1942.
During World War II, she worked in a defense plant, building airplanes in Mount Clemens, Mich.
She later worked at Selfridge Air Force Base as a secretary (also in Mount Clemens).
On Nov. 4, 1950, she married Robert (Bob) Lockman of Boyne City and her next job was being a super "stay at home" mom.
For several years (19621974), she was secretary to the Charlevoix County Extension Agent in Boyne City.
The main goal in her life was simply to make other people happy.
Many stories and laughs were shared around her kitchen table with family and friends over the years.
This brought joy to both her and her husband, Bob. Ardis loved to read novels, do crossword puzzles, and to go shopping, especially with her "girls" and sister-in-law, Ester Lockman. Holidays were a special time for her bringing her family together.
Her smile and kind gentle ways will live on in the hearts of all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Lyle Kowalske.
Her loving husband Bob passed away on July 19, 1996.
Survivors include her brother, Don Kowalske of Virginia Beach, Va.; her sons, Don (Jackie) Lockman and Carl (Elaine) Lockman of Boyne City; daughters, Nancy (Raymond) Fortune of Walloon Lake, and Chris (Sandy) Robinson of Boyne City; sisters-in-law, Loretta Fineout of Traverse City and Ester Lockman of Boyne City; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Northwest Michigan at P.O. Box 233, Boyne City, MI 49712 or to the Charlevoix County Easter Seals Loan Closet, c/o Gen Varnum, 519 State Street, Boyne City, MI 49712 or call (231) 582-7138.
The family was served by Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City.
Margaret Louise (Johnson) Moore
Margaret Louise (Johnson) Moore, age 84, of Boyne City passed on Friday, March 19, 2004.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, March 23, at the Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City.
Private burial services will be at a later date in the Lakeview cemetery, Harbor Springs.
She was the wife of Rolland Elmer Moore and loving mother of Rodney Karston, Marcia Karen, Janice Karla Fangboner and Jeryl Kara (Moore) Harford and helped to raise her grandson, Kevin Moore.
Proud and loving grandmother to Andrea (Moore) Melzer, Amanda (Moore) Elsner, Brian, Atrena, Trent, Adam and Ambera Moore; Jason, Jared and Jalend Fangboner; and Kevin and David Harford. Loving great-grandmother to Victoria, Ethan and Kayla Melzer; Daniel Elsner; and Nathan and Katie Moore.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two older brothers, Ralph and Earl Johnson.
