Ellen E. Long
Ellen E. Long, 89, of Kalkaska passed away on Jan. 25, 2003. She was the beloved wife of the late Isiah James "Pete" Long (June 1971); dear mother of Grace (Pat) McCauley of Kalkaska, Sam Long of Kalkaska, Mary (Dave) Robins of Mancelona, Alice Dorman of Kalkaska, John (Jean) Long of Kalkaska, Pete Long of Kalkaska, and Sid (Terrie) Long of Kalkaska; dear grandmother of 16 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Ellen was preceded in death by daughter Kay Woodin.
Ellen married Pete Long on March 18, 1937 in Kalkaska. Mrs. Long was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church and a life member of VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary. She loved her garden and her soap operas.
Mass of Christian burial was Jan. 28 at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Interment will be at Evergreen cemetery.
Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
Durand R. Gotts
Durand R. Gotts, 101, a resident of Elk Rapids since 1952, died last Sunday at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Born in Ypsilanti on March 18,1902, he was the son of Edward and Eliza Gotts. On May 22, 1920, in Ypsilanti, Durand married Rose Banninger, who preceded him in death in 1989, just three days after their 70th wedding anniversary.
Until he retired in 1967, Durand operated a Standard gas station across from the theater in Elk Rapids. He was a member of the Elk Rapids Masonic Lodge and the Elk Rapids Sportsman's Club.
Durand is survived by four sons, Robert (Marge) of Madison, Ind., Richard (Mary Ellen) of Elk Rapids, Thomas (Inez) of Elk Rapids and John (Johanna) of McCall, Idaho; 25 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Gotts, in 1989; and his daughter, Rose Marie Riffe, in 1997.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 5, at the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids. The Rev. Sandra Murray officiated.
Interment will be in Maple Grove cemetery, Elk Rapids.
Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements were entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes of Elk Rapids.
Ben Robinson
Ben Robinson, 91, of Kewadin, died last Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Oct. 3, 1911, in Honor, he was the son of Arthur and Flora (Frederickson) Robinson.
A lifelong area resident and business owner, Ben had retired and enjoyed traveling.
Ben is survived by his children, Larry (Sally) Robinson of Kewadin, David (Janet) Roblnson of Kent, Wash., Linda of Kewadin; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene (Stites); and brothers, Pat and Donald.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, at Maple Grove cemetery in Elk Rapids. Immediately following the service, a luncheon will be served at AMVETS Post #114 at 410 Bridge St. in Elk Rapids.
Arrangements are being handled by the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
Vivian Wall
Vivian G. "Sally" Wall, 94, of Fife Lake, formerly of Greenville, went home to be with her Lord early Friday morning, April 4, 2003, from the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, Kalkaska.
The daughter of Eston and Achsa (Williams) Jackson, she was born Oct. 8, 1908, in Montgomery County, Ind.
On Nov. 27, 1926, in Crawfordsville, Ind., she married Francis L. Wall. They later moved to Michigan and settled in Grand Rapids around 1937. In October of 1947, Frank and Vivian moved to Cedar Springs when they purchased Hill's Bakery, which they owned and operated for many years.
In 1952, Vivian, who was known as "Sally" by then, bought the patterns, material and one sewing machine from a local lady and began to design and make a variety of red flannel garments. The business was known as The Francis Lee Red Flannel Factory. When she retired and sold the business in 1971, she had 20 sewing machines in operation. Her garments can be found all over the world.
Sally enjoyed her family, friends, flower gardens, crocheting, knitting and doing anything artistic with her hands. Sally had a knack for offering kind words of guidance, support and encouragement to everyone, especially young people. She was a great story teller. Vivian was an active member of the Greenville First Church of God and enjoyed participating in many community events.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Francis L. Wall, on Nov. 18, 1986; a brother, Athel Jackson; and sister, Bonnie Smith.
Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Darwin L. and Lillian Wall, of Cedar Springs; daughter and son-in-law, Achsa and Merlin Hulbert, of Fife Lake; grandchildren John Hulbert of Fife Lake, James Hulbert of Glendale, Ariz., Jack and Sue Hulbert of Shelbyville, and Joyce and Ruben Barreto of Grandville; 10 great-grandchildren and their spouses; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the Brown-Teman & Christian-sen Funeral Home, Greenville, with the Rev. Dave Perry, pastor of the First Church of God, and the Rev. Don O'Leary, pastor emeritus, officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Home cemetery, Greenville.

Margaret Hoppe
Margaret Anna Hoppe, 64, passed away April 2, 2003, surrounded by her family after a long illness at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long Term Care.
She was the mother of Herman Walter Hoppe Jr. of Kalkaska, Teresa A. (Robert) Watts of South Boardman and Vicki L. Hoppe of South Boardman; sister of Marie Conley of Weeping Water, Neb., Marjorie Hayes of Tabor, Iowa, Lois Addleman of Bellevue, Neb., John (Jean) Fleck of Springfield, Neb.; brother Harold Fleck of Lincoln, Neb.; three grandchildren and one greatgranddaughter.
Margaret married Herman Walter Hoppe Sr. on Aug. 11, 1955, in Papplion, Neb. She was a resident of South Boardman since 1969 and a past member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, on July 4, 1972, her parents and four brothers.
A funeral service was conducted April 5, 2003, at Wolfe Funeral Home. The Rev. William D. Kuiper of Evergreen Bible Baptist Church officiated. Interment was at the Boardman Township cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorials be made to the family of Margaret Hoppe, P.O. Box 171, South Boardman, Mich. 49680.

Jeanette King
Jeanette Higgins (Atkins) King of Kalkaska, beloved mother and grandmother, as well as the devoted wife of Jack King, departed this earth on April 2, 2003, at Norwood Hospital in Mobile, Ala.
Jeanette was born to Eugene and the late Alma (Simpson) Atkins on Nov. 4, 1934, in Vassar. She married Bob Jones in 1953 and started a family with him in 1955. They had five loving children together.
In 1997, Jeanette retired from Lapeer Regional Hospital after 27 years of dedicated service as a respiratory therapist.
Jeanette and Jack traveled between homes in Kalkaska and Gulf Shores, Ala. In retirement, they enjoyed their time together visiting with friends and family.
Jeanette is survived by her husband, Jack; children Jeff (Ann) Jones of Vassar, Rob Jones of DeSoto, Texas, Dan Jones of Davison, Susan Beckman of Ada, and Heather (Paul) Rossler of Sand Springs. Okla.; father, Eugene Atkins of Vassar; and sister, Barbara (Bruce) Barr of Boynton Beach, Fla. She is also survived by 12 loving grandchildren who will cherish the memory of their grandmother forever. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her greatly.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her mother, Alma Atkins, and her brother, Thomas Atkins.
She has touched the lives of many, and will forever be missed in our hearts.
A memorial service is being planned for June.
Doris Kusch
Doris A. Kusch, 75, of Kalkaska passed away April 1, 2003, at the Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
She was born March 4,1928, in Bad Axe, the daughter of Charles and Jessie (Couper) Murdoch.
Doris married Donald A. Kusch on June 10, 1950, in Saginaw. They were residents of Kalkaska since 1973. Doris was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kalkaska, where she enjoyed participating in the choir, hand bell choir, ladies auxiliary, Altar Guild and taught Monday school. She was also a founder of Grand Traverse Highlanders Pipe Band, playing the bagpipes and was the secretary of the group.
Surviving are her children, Connie (Eugene) Bielby of Waterbury, Conn. and David (Raeann) Kusch of Livonia; grandchildren, Rick, Tiffany and Remington; and brother, Charles (Claire) Murdoch of South Windsor, Conn.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Donald.
The funeral service was conducted April 5 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kalkaska. The Rev. Ted Turanski officiated. Interment was April 7 at Roselawn cemetery in Saginaw with a chapel service.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials be made in Doris' behalf to any of the following three charities: St. Paul Lutheran Church's music program, 2470 Beebe Road, Kalkaska, Mich. 49646; St. Paul Lutheran School, 20805 Middlebelt Road, Farmington Hills, Mich. 48336; Concordia Lutheran High School, Kusch Endowment, 1601 St. Joe River Drive, Fort Wayne, Ind. 48105.

Gertrude (Trudy) Upton Kent
Gertrude (Trudy) Upton Kent, 79, of East Jordan, died Monday, March 31, 2003 at Grandvue Medical Care Facility.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Born in Boyne Falls on April 30, 1923, she was the daughter of William and Florence Upton.
A 1941 graduate of Boyne Falls High School, she was a bookkeeper for Consumer Power in Boyne City, chief auditor for the City of Painesville in Ohio, a bookkeeper for the Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, Fla., and a bookkeeper for Rockwell and Bond in Harbor Springs.
Trudy was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Harbor Springs.
Surviving are several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Trudy was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Edith Danforth, Grace Higgins, and Alice Cooper.
Her brother, Lewis Upton, Sr. also died on Monday, March 31, 2003.
Arrangements were handled by Stackus Funeral Home in Boyne City.
Marjorie E. Carey
Marjorie E. Carey, 83, of Bellaire, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
The daughter of Col. Glenn and Pearl (Yeoward) Carey, she was born Aug. 12, 1919, in Bay City. She lived at Higgins Lake for many years, spending her summers in Bellaire. She moved permanently to Bellaire from Tampa, Fla. three years ago. Marjorie had been employed as a hotel manager in Tawas City, and was a life member of Lansing Arbutus Chapter 45 Order of the Eastern Star.
Marjorie is survived by three nephews and three nieces, including special niece Cynthia "Cindy" (Rodney) LaPointe of Bellaire. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Katharine Carey; and brother John Carey.
Cremation has taken place and a family graveside interment of ashes will take place at Oakwood cemetery, Higgins Lake at a later date. Pastor Mary Brown and Rev. Dave Stephens will preside.
Arrangements were made by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Home.
