Albert Headley
Albert Headley, 85, of Kalkaska, died July 29, 2001 in Traverse City after suffering many years with Alzheimer's disease. He was born in Lakeview on Oct. 30, 1915, the son of Sylvester Headley and Mary Miller. His wife, Vina, preceded him in death on Dec. 3, 1995. Mr. Headley was a World War II Veteran. He spent many years in the Harbor Springs area working as a woodsman until moving to Kalkaska in 1969. For the last four years he was a resident of Tendercare Nursing Home in Gaylord and the last few months a resident of Tendercare Nursing Home in Traverse City. Surviving are sons Stanley R. of Tacoma, Wash. and Samuel L. (Ilene) of West Palm Beach, Fla.; daughter Dorothy J. (Hassan) Restum of Traverse City; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service were July 31 at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska; Dan Johnson officiated. Burial was at the Evergreen cemetery in Kalkaska. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer Association.
Margaret Alice Watson
Margaret Alice Watson, 75, died Thurs., July 26, 2001, at her home in Mancelona. She was born on Sept. 20, 1925, in Detroit, the daughter of Wilson and Mildred (Crummie) Conner. She grew up in Detroit and graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit in 1944. Margaret married Francis J. "Frank" Watson on June 22, 1946, in Detroit. During World War II, she had worked in a defense plant in Detroit and volunteered in the US0. She also had worked at the Brown's Creamery in Detroit and Sears, Roebuck & Co. store in Highland Park. When her children were growing up, she was active in the Hazel Park PTA. She was also a Cub Scout Leader. When she moved to Mancelona in 1968, she began working at the Mancelona Schools as a teacher's aide and then as a cook. She later worked in maintenance and retired in 1988. Margaret attended the Mancelona United Methodist Church and was a life member of the Eastern Star in Bellaire. She enjoyed bowling, camping, playing cards and bingo with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband Francis J. "Frank" Watson of Mancelona; children Alexander M. (Connie) Watson of Hazel Park, Francis J. Watson Jr. of Mancelona, Karen L. (Michael) Ohneck of Mancelona, Barry A. (Andrea) Watson of Grand Rapids, and Ryan K. Watson of Mancelona; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers Wilson Conner of San Francisco, Calif. and Donald Conner of Florida; sisters-in-law Jan Conner of Florida, Betty Conner of Royal Oak, and Bernice Conner of Madison Heights; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Alfred, Wayne and Charlie Conner; and sister Nancy Aicher. Funeral services were Tues., July 31 at 2 p.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona; the Rev. Kathy Steen of the Mancelona United Methodist Church officiated. Interment will be In Fairview cemetery in Mancelona. Memorials may be given to the Munson Hospice.
Doris May O'Hearn Bates
Doris May O'Hearn Bates, 80, of Torch Lake, Central Lake Township, passed away Wed., Oct. 17, 2001. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Born March 4, 1921, in Watertown, N.Y., Doris was predeceased by her parents Frank and Olive (Benson) O'Hearn, and younger brother Frank William Jr. (Sonny), who died in World War II. Doris' life experiences exemplified her generation. A child of the Depression, she worked in defense industries during World War II and met her husband William while he was stationed at the Naval Hospital at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard in New York. After the war, William and Doris chose a naval career. They retired to Torch Lake in 1969. Doris was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are her husband of 58 years, William Bates; daughter Patricia (Paul) Roush of Charlotte, Mich.; grandson Wade Roush and his partner Kevin Park of San Francisco, Calif.; grandson Jamie (Jen Athey) Roush of Fairbanks, Alaska. A graveside service will be held Sun., May 26, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Lakeview cemetery in Torch Lake Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lake Township Library, P.O. Box 397, Central Lake, MI 49622, or to the Leukemia Society of America, Michigan Chapter, 21617 Harper Ave., St. Clair Shores, MI 48080-2254. Arrangements are being made by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
Alice May Bollinger
Alice May Bollinger, 78, of Bellaire (formerly of Lakeview), passed away at Munson Memorial Hospital Sun., Oct. 21, 2001. She was born May 25, 1923, the daughter of Christopher and Emma (Anton) Petersen of the Trufant area. On Sept. 15, 1947, in Greenville, she married Keith Boflinger who survives. She graduated from Lakeview High School in 1941, moved to Grand Rapids and worked at Steketees Department Store. After their marriage, she and Keith resided in Lakeview for 39 years where they owned and operated Bollinger's Inc. They retired to their summer home on Torch Lake for the past 16 years. Besides her husband Keith of 54 years, Alice is survived by daughters Kaylyn Kale of Grand Rapids, Faye Bollinger of Littleton, Colo., and Kelly (Jim) Palmer of Spring Lake; six grandchildren; sister Grace Cahiff of Howard City; and several nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Leona Roush and Frances Dauser; brothers Raymond, Howard and Norman "Lefty" Petersen. There will be a private service held for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in memory of Alice Bollinger be made to Munson Hospice, 1105, 6th St., Traverse City, MI 49684. Elizabeth Calven
Elizabeth Calven, 86, of Boyne City, died Fri., Oct. 19, 2001, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Elizabeth was born in Trenton, N.J. on Jan. 1, 1915, to Joseph and Mary Zurza. The family, which included brothers John, Joseph Jr. and sister Irene, moved to Detroit where her father worked for Ford Motor Co. She met and married Charles Calven in Detroit in 1937. When her father retired from Ford, he moved to Central Lake where he and Mary farmed and Elizabeth and Charles owned and operated Calven's Cottages on Intermediate Lake until the late '60s. With her parents passing, she and Charles moved to Boyne City. They had no children of their own but lavished love and care on their nephews and nieces. Elizabeth was a very caring person to whom family came first and the rest of the world a close second. During her stay at Meadow Brook, she helped her fellow patients as much as her frail condition would allow and lamented she could not do more. She will be missed by all whom she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, brothers John and Joseph Jr. and sister Irene. She is survived by nephews Thomas P. Sheldon of Bellaire, Terrance R. Sheldon of Moundsville, W. Va., grandnieces Kristen L. (Sheldon) Lensch, Nicole M. (Sheldon) McGinty, both of Denver, Colo., and five great-great grandnephews. No services are planned. Burial will be in Boyne City. The Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Rosaline 'Rose' Chambers
Rosaline "Rose" Chambers of Elk Rapids, died Thurs., Oct. 18, 2001 at the home of her daughter, Laura Klave in Kewadin. A memorial service will be held Sat., Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. at the Kewadin United Methodist Church. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service.
Eliza A. Collins
Eliza A. Collins, 92, of Kalkaska, died Oct. 14, 2001, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. Eliza was born Jan. 3, 1909, to Alvin and Etta (Waid) Miller in Fowlerville. She married Joseph C. Collins on August 14, 1941 in Farmington. Surviving are nephew Louis M. (Ilene) Phillips of Lake Wales, Fla.; niece Joan Prince of Wyandotte; and cousin Dorotheo Wedal of Pellston. Her husband Joseph preceded her in death, Visitation was Oct. 18 at Wolfe Funeral Home with the funeral service at 6 p.m.; Pastor Larry Brown of the M-72 Church of Christ officiated. Interment was at the Evergreen cemetery. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
Henrietta E. Homberg
Henrietta E. Homberg, 93, of Rapid City, died Tues., Oct. 16, 2001, in Bellaire. Mrs. Homberg was born Sept. 26, 1908, to Louis and Adel (Lupe) Marrs in Montreal, Canada. She married Henry Homberg Aug. 18, 1934, in Detroit. They moved to Rapid City in 1972. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her grandchildren Surviving are her husband Henry; son Marne (Joann) Homberg of Rapid City and daughter Carole Turf of Clinton Township. A private memorial service was held Oct. 18 at Milton Township cemetery. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
LeRoy "Roy" Nevin
LeRoy "Roy" Nevin died Sun., Oct. 21, 2001, at home in Elk Rapids. A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Sat., Oct. 27 at AMVETS Post 114 on Bridge Street in Elk Rapids.
David Leland Risk
David Leland Risk, 45, of Alden, died Fri., Oct. 19, 2001, at home. He was born Nov. 26, 1955, in Lansing, the son of Donald James and Mary Ann (Smith) Risk. On Dec. 21, 1994, in Farmington, N.M., he married the former Cynthia M. Morgan who survives. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam era. He was a member of the Kalkaska Seventh Day Adventist Church. Surviving beside his wife Cynthia is a son, David L. Risk Jr. of Morgan City, La.; his parents, Donald and Mary Ann Risk of Arkansas; brother Jimmy (Dawn) Risk, also of Arkansas and a sister, Ruth Ann (George) Roys of Evart. Funeral Services will be conducted 11 a.m., Thurs., Oct. 25 at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes where family will meet with relatives and friends one hour before the start of services. Pastor Jeff Arthur of the Graling Seventh Day Adventist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Southern cemetery, Central Lake Township.
Stanford P. Schwartz
Stanford P. Schwartz, 94, died Sat., Oct. 20, 2001, in Westland Convalescent in Westland. Mr. Schwartz was born on April 29, 1907, in Nahma to the late Judson Schwartz and Mary Slice Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn in 1997 and a granddaughter Diane. Mr. Schwartz and his late wife were former residents of Mancelona. Mr. Schwartz was a foreman with the Pfaff Sash & Door Company for 30 years prior to his retirement in 1970. He had been with the company for 30 years. Mr. Schwartz was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Schwartz is survived by sons Richard (Pat) Schwartz of Northville and Larry (Joanne) Schwartz of Livonia: grandchildren Terre, Rick, Chris, Jeff, Mark and Jill: eight ten great-grandchildren. Graveside services were Tuesday at in Fairview cemetery in Mancelona. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions to Community Hospice of Westland would be appreciated by the family.
