Rolaine Vivian Truax
Rolaine Vivian Truax, 81, of Elk Rapids, died peacefully at home with her family by her side Feb. 22, 2000. Rolaine was born Jan. 19, 1919, in South Milton Township, where she spent her childhood. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Grace Leora (Wood) and Delbert James Fox; and brothers Wayne, Richard and Kenneth. She married Leland D. Truax on Oct. 13, 1947, in Reno, Nev. They moved to Elk Rapids in 1985, after living in the Detroit area and Florida for many years. Rolaine is survived by her husband; daughters Carol (Sam) Marlatt of Elk Rapids, Patricia Lonaker of Canton, and Faye McCallum of San Antonio, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew. Rolaine was a homemaker all of her life. She was an avid bingo player with a more than average share of luck, and was a team bowler for more than 50 years, bringing home many trophies. She also enjoyed doing embroidery work and playing cards, particularly cribbage, with her family. Her family, friends and neighbors enjoyed her cooking, especially her apples pies. Her sense of humor was always there. Rolaine has been cremated. Arrangements were handled by the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Private family memorial services will be scheduled at a later date. John G. Velesz
John G. Velesz of Kalamazoo, formerly of Mancelona, died Feb. 27, 2000, in Battle Creek. John was born in Mancelona on Jan. 10, 1917, the son of George and Anna (Kelbel) Velesz. He was a stockman at Fuller Trans Co. He was a member of St. Augustine Cathedral and the Knights of Columbus. John was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth A. (Barr) Valesz on Jan. 29, 1998, and brother Father Dunstan Velesz in 1998. He is survived by brother Frank T. Velesz of Springfield, Va.; sisters Anne Wayne of Kalamazoo, Mary Pasch of Kalamazoo, Margaret Neher of Mancelona, Kathryn Lacey of Kalamazoo and Rose Wilson of Burton; and several nieces and nephews. A rosary was recited Feb. 29 at Redmond Funeral Home, 330 N. Westnedge, Kalamazoo. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wed., March 1; Father Thomas Fernando celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Augustine Education Fund.
Charles E. Bellinger
Charles E. Bellinger, 93, of Charlevoix and Zephyrhills, Fla., died April 18, 2000, in Zephyrhills. Mr. Bellinger was born March 3, 1907, in Charlevoix, the son of William and Eleanor (Greenaway) Bellinger. He is a 1925 graduate of Charlevoix High School, and graduated from County Normal School in 1926. On Sept. 20, 1931, he married Alice McNeal in Boyne City. He owned Bellinger Jewelry Shop for almost 50 years, retiring in the early 1970s. "Charlie" was a 70-year Life Member and Past Master of Charlevoix Lodge 226, F&AM, and had served on the Charlevoix City Council for 17 years. He attended the First Congregational Church in Charlevoix. He is survived by wife Alice of Charlevoix and Zephyrhills, Fla.; son Donald (Barbara) Bellinger of Elk Rapids; sisters Wilma Smith of Charlevoix, and Adeline (George) Wallam of Traverse City; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Bellinger was preceded in death by son Joseph in 1976. A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sat., June 10 at the United Methodist Church in Charlevoix; the Reverend Philip 0. Schairbaum of the First Congregational Church in Charlevoix will officiate. Interment will be in Brookside cemetery, Charlevoix. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church in Charlevoix. The family is being served by the Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix.
Donna Eva Champney
Donna Eva Champney, 74, of Helena Township, died Mon., June 5, 2000, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Donna was born July 24, 1925, in Flint, the daughter of Coldon "Don" and Sylvia (Schlecte) Woodruff. On Jan. 26, 1946, in Flint, she married Clark Champney. He died on April 29, 2000. Donna had worked for the Secretary of State Office in Garden City for numerous years, and then at the Michigan Department of Mental Health in Livonia for five years. She retired in 1985. She lived in the Garden City and Westland area for 40 years. In 1986, she moved north to the Alden area. She was a member of the Alden United Methodist Church. Donna is survived by children Dennis (Jane) Champney of Hebron, Ky., Don (Evelyn) Champney of Sparta, Cheryl (Dave) Sprik of Bellaire, and Carole Putnam of Asheville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother Jim (Anne) Woodruff of Rapid City; and sisters Margorie (Leon) Chapman of Rapid City and Louise Dillenbeck of Flint. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister Marion Briniger. The family will receive friends on Wed., June 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc. in Mancelona. Funeral services are Thurs., June 8 at 11 a.m. at the Alden United Methodist Church; Rev. Richard Matson will officiate. Memorials may be given to Alden United Methodist Church.
Cecil B. Elkins
Cecil B. Elkins, 81, of South Boardman, died Sat., June 3, 2000, at his home. Mr. Elkins was a retired logger, and moved to Kalkaska County in 1962. He had previously resided in Roscommon, Manton, Freesoil and Manistee. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and enjoyed gardening, fishing and the outdoors. He was born in Chase on July 26, 1918, the son of Ernest and Pearl Ballard Elkins. He married Margaret Humphrey, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 17, 1949, in Kingsley, he married Phillis Smith who survives. Besides his wife, he is survived by son Marshall (Kathy) Elkins of Mancelona; daughters, Nelda (Andrew) Schaub of Kingsley, Cinda Snell of South Boardman, Carol (Marvin) Schwab of Canton, Ohio, and Tina (Gary) Tracey of South Boardman; brother Arthur Elkins of Mancelona; 25 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. A brother Robert, and sisters Barbara and Beverly also preceded him in death. Memorial services were June 6 at the Evergreen Bible Baptist Church; Rev. William Kuiper officiated. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
Wayde Goodall
Wayde Goodall, 81, of Bellaire and Zephyrhills, Fla., died early Fri., June 2, 2000, at Genesys Regional Medical Center near Flint. The son of William G. and Nina (VanDuskirk) Goodall, he was born June 7, 1918 in Carsonville. On Aug. 10, 1940, in Flint, he married the former Jane S. Smith. He was employed for many years as a route supervisor for Layman Distributing Co. in Flint. He also worked several years at the Flint General Motors plant, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Church in the Hills, and a life member of Swartz Creek Lodge No. 458, F and A M. He was a veteran of the United States military, having served in the Army during World War II. He had enjoyed coming to Lake Bellaire for 45 years, and in 1986 made Bellaire and Zephyrhills, Fla., his permanent homes. He is survived by his wife Jane; sons Kirk A. (Marsha) of Swartz Creek, and Wayde I. (Rosalyn) of Springfield, Mo.; daughter Linda J. (Joseph) Heintz of Mount Pleasant; brothers Reed (companion Mary Berlin) of Grand Blanc, Max, also of Grand Blanc, and William (Donna) of Davison; sister-in-law Thelma Goodall of Davison; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers Vivian and Myrle; and an infant sister Jane. Funeral services were June 6 at the Church in the Hills; Rev. Duane E. Ferris officiated. Burial was in Lakeview cemetery, Bellaire. Arrangements were made by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Alfred C. Hansen
Alfred C. Hansen, 70, of Lansing, formerly of Kalkaska, died Mon., May 29, 2000, at his home. Mr. Hansen had been employed by General Motors Corp. in Lansing for 25 years prior to his retirement. He lived in Kalkaska for many years before returning to Lansing. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. A. C. was born in Remus on Jan. 8, 1930, to Arthur and Bertha Ames Hansen. Surviving are son Tim Hansen of Manistique; daughter Tammy Schmidt of Rives Junction; mother Bertha Hansen of Kalkaska; brother Winfield Hansen of Kalkaska; sister Dorothy Darke of Muskegon; former wife Phyllis Hansen of Kalkaska; and two grandchildren. Brother John C. Hansen preceded him in death. Memorial services were June 2 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska; Rev. David McCool, pastor of the Kalkaska Church of the Nazarene, officiated. Inurnment was in Evergreen cemetery, Kalkaska.
Frances Jackson
Frances Jackson, 63, of Mancelona, died Mon., May 29, 2000, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. She was born Dec. 14, 1936, the daughter of Sylvester and Daisy Hissong. On Aug. 5, 1961, she married Richard Lee Jackson Sr. He died on March 15, 1999. She enjoyed reading, fishing and playing cards She is survived by children Richard L. Jackson Jr. of Mancelona, Graves Lee Jackson of Colorado, Jo Arlene (Brett) Smith of Litchfield, and Michelle (Sammy) Frances and Leo Jackson, both of Homer; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Marlene, Mona and Sheila. Funeral services were June 2 at the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc. in Mancelona; Rev. Fr. Fredrick Myers of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids officiated. Interment was in Chapman cemetery, Custer Township.
Royce "Dutch" Lueck
Royce C. Lueck, 87, died Sat., May 20, in Ocala, Fla. He was born April 29, 1913, in Mancelona, the son of Arthur and Erma Lueck. Royce worked in a defense plant during World War II in Detroit and moved to Kewadin in 1945 where he was a dairy farmer for many years. He also worked at Cone Drive Gear in Traverse City until he retired in 1975. He is survived by his wife Mary E. Lueck of Ocala, Fla.; son Corky (RuthAnn) Lueck of Williamsburg; daughters Carolyn Sue (Tom) Bradford of Midland, Janice (Ken) Nordin of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Diane (K.C.) Gilbert of Owosso; daughter-in-law Carolyn (Butch) Lueck of Kewadin, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and son Butch Lueck in 1988. No services are planned at this time.
Emma McAllister
Emma Otto McAllister, 89, died Sun., May 21, 2000, at Arbor Hospice Residence. She was born in Kalkska County on June 24, 1910, the daughter of Raymond G. and Nellie M. (Packer) Vargason. On June 30, 1936, she married Walter Otto in Rapid City. He preceded her in death on June 12, 1982. On June 5, 1985, she married Almond Paul McAllister. He also preceded her in death in 1994. Emma was a nurse's aide at Beyer Hospital and retired on June 24, 1975. She was a member of the Cross Street Church of Christ in Ypsilanti. Survivors include son Richard Raymond (Sally) Otto of Kalkaska and their daughters Rosemary Sue (John) Smith [daughter Kelsey Rae], and Paige Ann Otto; daughter Rosemary Edith (Bobby) Cole of Roseburg, Ore., and their children Kenneth and Tanya; and brother Leonard (Vera) Vargason of Flint. Ten nieces, three nephews and a host of great- and great-great nieces and nephews also survive her. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, their wives, a niece and a grandson Jason Cole. Funeral services were May 24 at Stark Funeral Home in Ypsilanti. Burial followed in Cadillac Memorial Gardens, Westland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor were requested.
Sally Goodson Roth
Sally G. Roth, 66, of Traverse City, died Wed., May 31, 2000, at Munson Medical Center. She was born June 6, 1933, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the daughter of Elbert and Lucille (Manning) Goodson. After graduating from Classen High School of Oklahoma City, she attended Mills College in Oakland, Calif. She married Louis A. Roth in 1952 and they settled in Webster Groves, Mo. Summers were spent on Torch Lake and her love of northern Michigan prompted her to move her permanent residence here later in life. She loved to travel, read, do needlework and entertain. Most of all she loved young people - of course her own, but the door was always open to everyone, as evidenced by the many "extra" kids who called her Mom. Her gentle smile and grace will be missed by all. Sally is survived by children Louis R. (Katie) Roth and Sherry R. (Jeff) Jones; daughters-in-law Rebecca G. Roth and Elizabeth Roth Kershner; and grandchildren Catherine G. Roth, Sally T. Roth, Louis R. Roth, Anne E. Roth, Paul A. Roth, Clare A. Roth and Mark D. Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved sons Mark A. Roth and John T.G. Roth; and husband Louis A. Roth. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Gerber Chapel of Webster Groves, Mo. Services were June 5 in St. Louis, Mo. Memorial services will be held at Torch Lake this August.
