Harold Marion Biehl
Harold Marion Biehl, 81, of Bellaire, died Sun., Jan. 30, 2000, at the Northwest Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz. Harold was born July 8, 1918, in Brazil, Ind., to the late Gerald and Marie (Easter) Biehl. In 1920, the family moved to Mancelona, where he graduated from high school in 1936. In 1941, Harold and his father began operating the Farmer's Marketing Association in Bellaire as "Gerald Biehl and Son" until June 9, 1942, when Harold was drafted and served in the Army Air Corps of World War II for three-and-a-half years. Harold's father continued to operate the store in his absence. He was stationed in various places in the United States and overseas in England for two years. He was discharged from the Army on Dec. 26, 1945. On Jan. 1, 1946, he was married to Bernice Ella Hintz of western Nebraska. After their marriage, they made their home in Bellaire, and Harold again took his place in the Feed Store. In 1968, the Feed Store was closed in Bellaire, but he with his father and brothers continued to operate the feed business as Biehl's Feed Inc. in Mancelona. Harold also worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Bellaire for 25-and-a-half years - 21 years as a postal clerk and four-and-a-half years as a rural route carrier. He retired in February 1980. Since 1981, Harold and his wife have been spending their winters in Arizona. Harold was a member of the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church. He held various offices in the church, including that of church treasurer for 15-and-a-half years. Surviving are wife Bernice; son Harold J. (Peggy) of Hudson; daughters Sharon K. (John) Donovan of Milwaukee, Ore., and Debra L. (Craig) VanSice of Tucson, Ariz.; brothers Arthur (Virginia) Biehl of Mancelona, Robert (Evida) of Mancelona, James (Darlene) of Alden, Gerald (Vera) of Mancelona, and Donald of Mancelona; sisters Helen Northrup of West Palm Beach, Fla., Mary (Frank) Mehlberg of Mancelona and Betty (Delmer) Duerksen of Mancelona; sister-in-law Leonore Hintz of Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of the Mortenson Funeral Home. Family and friends may call Fri., Feb. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Services are in the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church on Sat., Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. Burial will be at Lakeview cemetery in Bellaire in the spring with details to follow. Willis J. Lee
Willis J. Lee, 80, of Mancelona, died Sun., Jan. 30, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. A mechanic, he was retired from Dowell in Kalkaska where he had worked for many years. A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army. Having lived in several towns in Michigan, he spent the majority of his adult working life in Kalkaska, moving to Mancelona three years ago. The son of Robert E. and Virginia (Barrow) Lee, he was born Sept. 28, 1919, in Mancelona. On July 8, 1939, in Atlanta, Mich., he married Lelia McConnell, who preceded him in death in 1978. Also preceding him in death were brothers Delbert, twin Willard, and Lloyd; and sisters Mildred Cornish, Goldie Lee and Velma Lee. Surviving are sons Willie K. (Millie) of Bellaire and Lloyd (Alice) of Saline; daughters Pat Szymchack and Dee Lee, both of Kalkaska; brother Robert (Donna) of Mancelona; sisters Ramona Ford of Grand Rapids, Lois (Delos) Rulapaugh of Alba, and Rebecca Hill of Traverse City; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wed., Feb. 2 at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes; Sr. Celine Goessl officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview cemetery, Bellaire. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.
Joy J. Mudge
Joy J. Mudge, 70, of Ellsworth, died Tues., Jan. 25, 2000, at home. Joy was born March 14, 1929, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of John E. and Doris I. (McKinnon) North. She was raised in East Liverpool, Ohio, and graduated from high school there in 1947. She received a bachelor of arts from Beaver College in Pennsylvania and a masters in library science from Wayne State University in Detroit. She was member of the Phi Lamda Theta Sorority. She began her career as a teacher in East Liverpool, followed by becoming a librarian, working at Wayne State University, Oak Park High School, and the Charlevoix Public Schools, where she was the director of school libraries from 1968 to 1992 when she retired. She was listed in Who's Who of American Women and selected as the Girl Scout Career Woman of the Year in 1990. She was a longtime volunteer for the Central Lake Township Library and the writer of the articles I Love This Book and So Many Books - So Little Time for local newspapers. Surviving are cousin Carolyn "Kay" (John) Michaels of East Liverpool, Ohio, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by husband Glen R. Mudge in 1977, her parents, and stepfather Frank Farnsworth. A memorial gathering was Jan. 29 at the Central Lake Township Library; Rev. Estel Clark officiated. Interment will take place in Lakeview cemetery, Torch Lake Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Lake Township Library, P.O. Box 397, Central Lake, MI 49622. Mabel C. Reiley
Mabel C. Reiley, 89, of Bellaire, went to be with the Lord Thurs., Jan. 27, 2000, from Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. She was born to Milo R. and Elizabeth (Roy) Montgomery on Nov. 27, 1910, in Kearney Township. She lived most of her life in Bellaire. Mabel was the 1928 Bellaire High School valedictorian, later receiving a teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan University. She then taught briefly in Alba and Posen, but spent most of her life as a homemaker. She was a member of the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church; Auxiliary of Gideon International; Bellaire Literary Club; United Methodist Women; Grand Traverse 29ers mission group; and Antrim County Retired Michigan Education Association. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening as well as sewing and crocheting. She was also an avid reader. On Aug. 25, 1934, in Kearney Township, she married Loyd F. Reiley, who preceded her in death on March 24, 1999. Also preceding her in death was brother Donald Rex Montgomery, sisters Esther Smith and Jean Montgomery; and great-granddaughter Emily Haueter. Surviving is daughter Martha E. Reiley of Traverse City; sons Norman J. (Sharon) of Lima, Ohio, and Forrest A. (Lorraine) of Eastham, Mass.; grandchildren Michael (Barbara) Reiley of Maui, Hawaii, Mary Lu (Rev. Douglas) Anthony of Elida, Ohio, Sharon (Rev. Gregory) Haueter of Toledo, Ohio, Karen Reiley of Cambridge, Mass., Anne (Jordan) Carlson of Mishawaka, Ind. and John Katana of Traverse City; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Farmily will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Fri., Feb. 4 at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Sat., Feb. 5 at the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church; Rev. Mary Brown will officiate. Interment will be in the spring at Eldred cemetery, Kearney Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Marshall F. Richards
Marshall F. Richards, 99, of St. Clair, formerly of Torch Lake Township, died Thurs., Jan. 27, 2000, at the Baar's Nursing Home in Fort Gratiot Township. He was born Sept. 7, 1900, in Howell, the son of William and Carrie (Taft) Richards. He was a teacher most of his life, after receiving a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and a master's in agriculture from Michigan State University. He was a longtime member of the Rotary and the Central Lake First Congregational Church, and enjoyed traveling, agriculture and music. He delighted in the writing of his autobiography. He resided in Torch Lake Township from 1965 to 1985. On June 21, 1923, in Clarks Lake, he married Alice Davison, who died in 1983. Surviving are daughter Patricia Lee (Henry Sobell) Kirkby of St. Clair, son Dr. Richard D. (Alice) Richards of Easton, Md., six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Jan. 31 at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes; Rev Daniel Clark officiated. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Torch Lake Township.
Charles A. Robertson
Charles A. Robertson, 63, of Lakes of the North, died Sat., Jan. 29, 2000, at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord. He was born July 7, 1936, in Kalamazoo, the son of Charles A. and Dorothy (Mason) Robertson. He graduated from Comstock High School in 1955. He then served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. On Jan. 3, 1959, in Vicksburg, he married Sara O'Brien. They made their home in Kalamazoo. He worked for Crown Vantage, a papermill, in Kalamazoo for 42 years. The last 10 years he served in quality control. He retired in 1997 and moved to Mancelona where they had owned property for some years. Charles was the past master of the Climax-Prairie Masonic Lodge 59 and Galesburg Masonic Lodge 92. He was a member of the Bellaire Masonic Lodge 398 F&AM, Gaylord Masonic Lodge 366 F&AM, York Rite and Scottish Rite, Saladin Shrine Temple in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo Shrine Club, Northwest Shrine Club, Royal Arch Chapter in Gaylord, and Commandery in Battle Creek. Charles is survived by wife Sara Robertson; children Donna (Steve) Weinburg of Vicksburg, Mark Douglas (Lisa) Robertson of Vicksburg, Laura Secrist of Kalamazoo and Rita (Dennis) Fischer of Chelsea; three grandchildren; and sisters Gwen Robertson of Portage and Marie (Dennis) Wilcox of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Michael Patrick Robertson in 1959, and sisters Carolyn Blackmore in 1965 and Mary Jean "Jeannie" Teall in 1999. Funeral services were Feb. 1 at the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc. in Mancelona; Rev. Gerald Cook of the Mancelona Free Methodist Church officiated. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery, Mancelona. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Michigan or Juvenile Diabetes Association.
Bryan B. Shoop
Bryan B. Shoop, 4, of Kewadin, formerly of Central Lake, died Mon., Jan. 24, 2000, at home. Bryan was born Dec. 28, 1995, in Loma Linda, Calif. Surviving are his parents David and Laurie (Casey) Shoop, and brothers and sisters Shane, Adam, Leah, Nicki, Ashley, Danny, Shauna, Mark, Melissa, Zachary and Hannah. Funeral services were Jan. 27 at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes; Pastor Kimon Criner officiated. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery, Torch Lake Township.
Mildred C. Zook
Mildred C. Zook, 82, of Central Lake, died Wed., Jan. 26, 2000, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Mildred was born in Central Lake on June 14, 1917, the daughter of Howard and Daisy (Williams) Chamberlain. She was a resident of Central Lake her entire life. She was a past member of the Bellaire Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed crocheting and playing the piano. On Dec. 23, 1946, in Bellaire, she married James T. Zook, who preceded her in death in 1974. Also preceding her in death were her parents, sisters Beatrice Kaeser and Violet Darling, and brother Fred Chamberlain. Survivors include daughter Karen Nachazel of DeWitt; and sons Robert (Judy) Johnstone of Laingsburg, Jim (Kathy) Zook of Trenton, and John and Tom Zook, both of Central Lake. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Jan. 29 at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes; Rev. Dave Scott officiated. Interment will take place in Southern cemetery, Central Lake Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Antrim-Kalkaska Community Mental Health.
Luther D. Berry
Luther D. Berry, 96, of Alma, formerly of Central Lake, died Sun., Feb. 27, 2000, at the Michigan Masonic Home in Alma. Mr. Berry was born July 31, 1903, in St. Charles, the son of Ernest and Laura (Luther) Berry. He retired from the Flint Board of Education in 1968 and then moved to Central Lake with his wife. He was a life member and past master of the Central Lake Masonic Lodge 426. He was also a member of the Central Lake First Congregational Church, and the Central Lake Golden Diners. He served in the United States Army from 1920 to 1923 as a signal Corpsman. On Nov. 25, 1925, in Flint, he married Margie Dunn, who preceded him in death in 1994. Also preceding him in death were son Clayton and daughter Barbara Cull. Surviving are sons Eugene (Linda) of Burton, and Maurice (Patricia) of Columbia, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wed., March 1 at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes; the Rev. Estel Clark officiating. Interment will be in Southern cemetery, Central Lake Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Charlotte K. Birgy
Charlotte K. Birgy, 94, a longtime resident of Fife Lake, died Mon., Feb. 21, 2000, at Munson Medical Center. Mrs. Birgy was born in Kalkaska County on Feb. 3, 1906, the daughter of Knud and Carrie Johnson. On Nov. 20, 1922, in Kalkaska, she married Joseph Birgy, who preceded her in death on March 27, 1987. Mrs. Birgy formerly served as Springfield Township Treasurer, and had been a member of the Boardman Area Senior Citizen's Club. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Surviving are brother-in-law Derwood Birgy of Fife Lake; sisters-in-law Ursal Birgy of Kalkaska and Helen Birgy of Grayling; and many nieces and nephews. Daughter Jeanette preceded her in death in 1926, and half-sister Marguerite Miller Norwood also preceded her in death. Funeral services were Feb. 24 at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska; Rev. David McCool officiated. Interment will be in the spring at St. Aloysius cemetery in Fife Lake.
Anna Jensen
Anna Margrethe Cecillie Jensen, 93, of Petoskey, died Feb. 24, 2000, at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey. Anna was born June 19, 1906, in Hou, Denmark, the daughter of Soin Peter and Sophia (Jensen) Andersen. She grew up near Herning, Denmark. On May 4, 1929, Anna married Christian Gotfred Jensen in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. After her marriage, she moved to Lansing, where her husband was a veterinary student attending Michigan State University. In 1936, Anna and Dr. Jensen moved north to Petoskey, where the couple opened Jensen's Animal Hospital. During World War II, Dr. Jensen served with the United States Army in Europe as a lieutenant colonel. After the war, he remained in Europe assisting with the Marshall Plan. Anna joined her husband and traveled with him extensively. After a time, the couple returned to the animal hospital and to Petoskey. In 1954, Anna became the general chairman of the Wives of Northern Michigan Veterinary Medical Association. She was also very active at one time with Girl Scout Troop 6 in Petoskey. In the 1970s, she moved to MacKenzie Drive in Kewadin near Elk Rapids. Then, in the mid-1990s, Anna moved back to Petoskey to Independence Village. Anna is survived by sister Olga (Alfred) Madsen, of Herning, Denmark, as well as several nieces an nephews. Dr. Jensen preceded his wife in death on Aug. 15, 1969. Funeral services were Feb. 29 at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey; Rev. David Behling officiated. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey.
Muriel B. Pemberton
Muriel B. Pemberton, 91, of Newberry, died Friday evening Feb. 25, 2000, at the Robin's Nest Group Home in Newberry. Mrs. Pemberton had been an area resident since 1992. She was born Oct. 17, 1908, in Howard City, the daughter of the late Bruce and Beulah (Bennett) Potts. Mrs. Pemberton was a 1926 graduate of Howard City High School and a 1930 graduate of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, receiving a bachelor's degree in education. She was employed at the Howard City and Cedar Springs school systems as a sixth-grade teacher for 30 years until her retirement in 1972. Muriel was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mancelona and also member of the Michigan Retired Teachers Association. Her hobbies included arts and crafts, and she also enjoyed spending time at the Howard City Club north of Trout Lake. Muriel married Orson Pemberton June 23, 1934, in Howard City, and he preceded her in death on May 25, 1992. Survivors include sons Doug of Hulbert and John (Jeanette) of Mancelona; daughter Nancy (Nick) Kaars of Kaneohe, Hawaii; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother Willard Potts of Elizabethtown, Pa. At request, cremation services will take place. A memorial service will be in the spring at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mancelona, with internment at Reynolds cemetery in Howard City. Those who wish may contribute to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 469, Mancelona, MI 49659, in memory of Muriel B. Pemberton. Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry assisted the family with arrangements.
Janet M. Reed
Janet M. Reed, 71, of Gaylord, died Sun., Feb. 20, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Reed was born Aug. 15, 1928, in Maud, Okla., and had lived in the Gaylord area since December 1970. She was employed at Advance Electric for many years. She is survived by daughter Sheryl (Frederick) Scherf of South Boardman; grandson Frederick Robert Scherf of Alden; great-granddaughter Ariel Scherf of Alden; and brother Frank (Amy) Carter of Kaneohe, Hawaii. Preceding her in death werehusband Robert "R.J." Reed in 1976 and mother Mabel Carter on Feb. 19, 2000. Funeral services were Feb. 23 at the First United Methodist Church; Rev. John Naile officiated. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan, The American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society through the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord.
William "Bill" Lloyd Roach
William "Bill" Lloyd Roach, 66, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, went to be with his heavenly Father and Lord on Feb. 26, 2000, after battling cancer for over one year, with his loving family at his side. Bill was born Jan. 27, 1934, in Flushing, to Harold and Catherine (Glenn) Roach. His parents and daughter Sandra preceded him in death. On July 16, 1951, he married Marilyn Moser. He enjoyed golf and woodworking. He was an honorary member with the U.S.S. Barney after taking a Navy cruise with his son-in-law Curt Forcier. In November 1999, they took a trip to Arizona and were able to climb 1.7 miles up the White Tank Mountains and tour the Sabino Canyon with his sisters-in-law Glema Brown and Carol Romero. Bill was a wonderful dad and grandpa and was proud of his grandchildren. Bill is survived by his wife Marilyn; children Michael (Darlene) of Central Lake, Connie (Don) Smith of Boyne City, Janis (Curt) Forcier of Kalkaska, Tim of Charlevoix, Randy (Maggie) of Kettering, Ohio, Kris (Ray) Whisler of East Jordan, and Patti (Brian) McKelvey of East Jordan; 20 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brothers Glenn (Myrna) Roach of Twin Falls, Idaho and Robert (Betty) of Westland; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial celebration at the Central Lake VFW on Sat., March 4 at noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed in his name to the Hospice of Charlevoix. Arrangements have been made by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
Eldon C. Rouse
Eldon C. Rouse, 73, of Central Lake, formerly of Ann Arbor, died Mon., Feb. 21, 2000, at South Baldwin Hospital in Gulf Shores, Ala., where he wintered. Eldon was a 1944 graduate of Clarkston High School. Following high school he served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1949 and was an educator for 33 years before retiring from Ann Arbor Public Schools in 1982. He taught in Woodland, Petersburg, Summerfield, Berkley, Highland Park and Ann Arbor Pioneer high schools. He was a well-known high school basketball coach for many years and was named Michigan Coach of the Year in 1978. He held life memberships at the Central Lake Masonic Lodge 426 where he was a Worshipful Master, the National Educational Association, Michigan Education Association, Michigan Coaches Association, the Charleston American Legion, Michigan Sports Sages and the Pe Kaffa Phi National Fraternity. He was also a volunteer at the museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Fla. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Valoise Rouse of Central Lake; children Michael (Lynn) Rouse of Granger, Ind., Susan Zell of Lapeer, Mark (Teresa) Rouse of Ann Arbor, Kristine (David) Galaviz of Schoolcraft, and Kathryn (Jay) Masinick of Grosse Pointe Woods; grandchildren Derek (Megan) Zell of Park Ridge, Ill., Carlos and Andrea Galaviz, both of Schoolcraft, Joseph, Nicholas and Jacob Masinick, all of Grosse Pointe Woods, and Brad Scheisser of Granger, Ind. Also surviving are sisters Bernice Powell, Ina Powell and Dorothy Koop, all of Clarkston, and brother Clark Rouse of Grand Rapids. A memorial service will be at a later date.
