Alice Eleanor Mae Manley, nee Everlove
Age 77 of Tecumseh, passed away late Monday evening, at Provincial House of Adrian, where she had been a resident for about a year. Alice was an inspirational, life-long optimist who fought a courageous fifteen year battle against serious medical problems that would have defeated a lesser spirit. Alice was born on Feb. 25, 1931, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the only daughter of Bernhard and Eleanor Renton Everlove. Her father was a gifted foundry engineer who was highly respected for his innovative work with aluminum mold and sand castings. Her mother was a life-long business woman, who excelled in retailing and was well known in Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor as the manager of the children’s department at Jacobson’s. During the Great Depression, when Alice was a baby, her father moved the family to Bermuda in hopes of finding work. He found a job in retail and was a correspondent for the Royal Gazette & Colonist Daily newspaper. Her mother owned and managed a guest house in Somerset, Bermuda. Two brothers, Thomas and Victor were born on the island. The Everlove children enjoyed an idyllic childhood. Alice’s children and grandchildren loved to hear her tell stories about the family’s life in Bermuda. She had a special gift for telling these stories. In 1985, she visited Bermuda with her daughters, Mary and Vickie, who were privileged to visit all the places described in the stories and to meet some of their mother’s childhood friends. In 1942, the Everlove family returned to the states so that Alice’s father could resume his career as a foundry man. The family settled in the Detroit area, eventually moving to Tecumseh when Alice was in high school. At Tecumseh High School, Alice met her soul mate and the great love of her life, Charles Manley. They were married on Aug. 26, 1948, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Tecumseh. This past August, Alice and Charlie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Charlie unexpectedly died on September 29, 2008. Alice never fully recovered from this great loss. Alice was a loving wife and gifted homemaker but her greatest talent was motherhood. Together, she and Charlie raised three girls, two boys and a grandson. Alice raised each one of her children to be strong, independent, confident individuals. She took great pride in each of her children’s unique personalities and different successes. Her hard work as a mother of six was rewarded with the gift of six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Following the birth of her three youngest children, Alice also worked outside of the home. She began as an Avon lady, was the assistant manager at the Tecumseh Products cafeteria and retired as a cashier at the Kroger Store. Her beautiful smile and genuine interest in people helped her form long lasting friendships with her colleagues and customers. People were often willing to stand in long lines to go through her check-out station. The last year of Alice’s life was challenging for her and her family. The family is deeply indebted to the skilled, kind and caring employees of the Provincial House of Adrian who helped Alice maintain her dignity and quality of life. They patiently met her needs with genuine professional, care. The family, also, would like to acknowledge the comfort that Alice and the family received from the Hospice of Lenawee during the last week of her life.
Alice is survived by her five children: Victoria Manley of Naperville, Ill., Kathryn Manley of Grand Rapids, Mich., James (Erva) Manley of Tecumseh, Mary (Bryan) Koebbe of Adrian, Robert Manley of Tecumseh and the grandson she raised, Richard Manley (Patti) of Sycamore, Ill.
