Elizabeth Jane Filter

Tecumseh, MI

Elizabeth Jane (Anderson) Filter, age 90, of Tecumseh, died at her home in Cambrian Assisted Living in Tecumseh, Michigan, on January 11, 2008. Bettie, as her friends and family called her, was the daughter of John Harold (Hop) Anderson, proprietor of the longtime downtown boulevard business bearing the Anderson name in Tecumseh from the Civil War until the 1950's, and Anna Lentz Anderson. Bettie echoed her Father's choice of spouse years later when she fell in love with Donald Francis Filter, a son of a German immigrant family who was making waves with his twin Ron as star students and athletes at THS. Her friends teased Bettie about her long crush on Don in the THS yearbook, but she bided her time until Don's return after graduation from GMI (now Kettering University), and they married on September 17, 1937.

Don's career as an industrial engineer took them to Dearborn, then to the Dayton and Galion, Ohio areas before they returned to live in Brooklyn Michigan in 1968.

In the meantime, Bettie, who took her responsibilities as a traditional homemaker very seriously, raised two children: Terrance A. Filter, Ph.D., now a clinical psychologist living in Ann Arbor; and Jennifer Dianne (Filter) Simpson R. N., now the nursing manager of a healthcare facility in Traverse City. In every place they lived, Don and Bettie were active members of the local Episcopal church, enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and socializing with a few friends and family, in addition to supporting their children's activities. Seldom were there a ballgame, recital, or school play that was missed. In 1989, Don and Bettie moved back to Tecumseh and lived in Herrick Park until their move to Cambrian in mid-2006.

Bettie is survived by both children, her husband, a sister, Jocelyn Barritt of Tecumseh, and a brother, Harold Anderson of Clark Lake, in addition to a grandson, Dr. Christopher Adam Pohlod of Lansing, a grand daughter, Amy Melissa (Pohlod) Zezulak of Chicago, and two great grandchildren, Sydney and Erin Elizabeth Pohlod. She is preceded in death by a brother John Anderson, and sisters Wilhemine (Billie) Retter and Julie Johnston.
