John Dalton Westgate,
age 74, of Raisin Township, MI, passed away, July 12, 2004, at Herrick Manor. He was born September 20, 1929, in Adrian, MI, the son of Alvin & Lenora (Lofberg) Westgate. On November 6, 1947, he married Doris "Dody" Perry, she survives.
John retired from Bohn Aluminum in 1991.
He is survived by his wife Doris "Dody", his children, Kathy (Rick) Coscarelli of Adrian and Jeff (Wilma) Westgate of Onsted, nine grandchildren, and eightgreat grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Saturday, July 17, 2004, in the Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh. Memorial Services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, at the funeral home following visitation, with The Rev. Dr. Kenneth Boyd officiating. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Lenawee County Humane Society. :
Dirk Doorn
Age 59, passed away July 11, 2004, at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan. At his side were his beloved wife, Jane Armstrong, their son Hendrik Doorn and daughter Sarah Doorn. His brother, Gerrit Doorn, and sister, Diny Doorn, were also able to be with him in his final days.
Dirk was born January 30, 1945, in Zwolle, The Netherlands, son of Hendrikus Doorn and Grietjen Doorn Agterhuis. He came to the United States in December 1963, accompanying Lawrence and Gladys Cherrington, who were returning home to Michigan after supervising the construction of a factory for the manufacture of baby formula in Dirk’s home town of Zwolle. Since that time, Dirk and his wife and children have enjoyed the love and support of the extended Cherrington family.
Dirk served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Following his return to civilian life, he earned an Associates degree from Glen Oaks Community College in Sturgis, Michigan, and then transferred to the University of Michigan. He began what became a life-long career of auto service while attending the University. After working as a mechanic for a number of years, he started an import auto parts business, though he continued to provide advice and assistance to the owners of many old VW beetles and buses and dune buggies.
Dirk was also active in local Boy Scout Troop 111. He was himself a scout in the Netherlands, earning the Queen’s Scout rank, the equivalent of the American Eagle Scout.
Dirk worked hard to make a good life for his family. He also loved to fish, eat Korean food, and listen to the Blues and Zaydeco music.
He will be sorely missed.
Graveside Services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at Washtenong Memorial Park, Ann Arbor. Military Honors will be performed by the Washtenaw County Veterans Funeral Team. Donations may be made in his name to Arbor Hospice. Arrangements by Purse Funeral Home, 800-613-4854.
Clarence P. Damon
February 9, 1919 - July 17, 2004
A gathering of friends to celebrate the life of Clarence Damon are welcome to unite at PURSE FUNERAL HOME, Tecumseh, on July 24, 2004, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
Howard McEldowney, Jr.
passed away at home on July 23, 2004 at the age of 49, under the loving care of his wife, son, family and Great Lakes Hospice. He was born on Dec. 08, 1954 to Howard Sr. and Evelyn McEldowney.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Colleen, a treasured son, Scott, and three adorable grandchildren; Shelby, Bianca, and Dominick. He is also survived by his mother Evelyn, six sisters; Dorothy Moore, Mary (Jim) Hixon, Carol McEldowney, Lois (Rick) Surber, Joann (Brad) Flack, Janet Richards and one brother Gerald. He had several nieces and nephews, and a special nephew Roger (Beth) Moore; also nephews Rick & Jason Surber, Dale McEldowney, Richard Moore, Chad Richards, and a special niece Sue Hixon. He leaves two very special great nieces, Deanna and Alyssa Moore, several great nieces and nephews, as well as two childhood friends Gene Moore, Bill Koch, and friend Betty Bryan. Howard loved hunting and fishing with his son and nephews. He cherished anything to do with family, friends and the outdoors. He was a very special man and will be missed and loved by everybody who knew him.
Cremation has taken place. To celebrate his life, a memorial service will be held at Vista Grande Villa at 2251 Springport Rd. on August 7th at 1:00pm with Chaplin Craig Britton officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family.
SUZANNE MASTERS
Age 60, of Tecumseh, died March 31, 2004, at Flower Hospital, Sylvania, OH. She was born July 19, 1943, in Jackson, MI, the daughter of Thomas and Thelma (Snyder) Conklin. On October 23, 1965, she married Louis Masters in Jackson, MI. He survives.
In addition to her husband Lou, she is survived by, one son Christopher of Tecumseh; one daughter Sarah of Charlotte, NC; and two sisters, Patricia (Ted) Renfer of and Nancy (John) Timberlake, both of Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 506 N. Union Street, Tecumseh, with the Rev. Fr. Daniel Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside cemetery, Tecumseh. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday, in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. A Scripture Service will be held 8:00 p.m. Friday in the church.

Ann Marie Santana,
age 41, formerly of Blissfield, died suddenly at her home on June 30th, 2004. She was born June 3, 1963 in Toledo, OH, the daughter of William J. Braun, of Madisonville, TN and Alice Gorney, of Adrian.
Ann was formerly employed by Amco Convertible Fabrics Inc., The Hill Tavern, and Cargotainer. She was also a volunteer at Catherine Cobb Domestic Violence Shelter.
Ann enjoyed spending time painting ceramics, sewing, quilting, and attending bingo; but her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Ann is survived by her five children, Duston Santana of Hudson, Joshua Santana of Adrian, Cynthia Ruiz of Adrian, Heather Carroll of Adrian, and Danielle Carroll of Adrian; three grandchildren, Trinity Santana of Adrian, Tyler Irwin of Adrian, and Damien Rosas of Adrian; one brother, Wayne (Tina) Braun of Toledo, OH, two sisters, Tammie Barber of Adrian, and Shellie (Chris) Patty of Maryville, TN; one grandfather, Eustace Fields of Adrian, several aunts and uncles, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ann was preceded in death by one brother, Larry (Shana) Braun of Adrian; and her grandparents, Lawrence and Marie Braun of Blissfield, Oliver Sharrai of California, and Martha Fields of Adrian.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. At Ann's request cremation and a private family service took place on July 1, 2004 at Purse Funeral Home in Adrian.

Virginia Lee "Gabby" Gifford,
age 46, of Adrian, passed away June 16, 2004 at home. She was born February 10,1958, in Toledo, OH. She worked for the Adrian Public Schools for 14 years.
Virginia is survived by her loving companion Jim Turpening, her children, Bradley Gifford and Kimberly Gifford, her mother; Dorothy Webber, six sisters; Linda, Dodi, Sherry, Ann, Joni, and Brenda, one brother; Bill, and many loving grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and one brother.
Funeral Services will be held 1:00 PM Monday in the Purse Funeral Home, Adrian. Interment will follow in Oakwood cemetery, Adrian. Visitation will be from 2 - 4 PM & 6 - 8 PM Saturday and Sunday in the Purse Funeral Home, Adrian.
Robert Exelby McCrate
age 91, of Tecumseh, died June 21, 2004 at Herrick Memorial Hospital. He was born August 16, 1912, the son of Edward and Alice (Exelby) McCrate in Columbus Grove, OH. On June 7, 1939 he married Mary Kathryn Doepker in Columbus Grove, OH. She preceded him in death on August 10, 1991. He then married Mildred Saksewski on Sept. 12, 1992. She survives.
Bob was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh. Previously, Robert owned a Ford Tractor and Dearborn Farm Implement Dealership in Columbus Grove, OH. In 1953 he moved his family to a Farm South of Britton, raising crops, livestock and his family. In 1966, the family moved to Tecumseh where Bob, a 38 year resident of Seminole Dr., retired from St. Elizabeth's Parish working as Maintenance person and Groundskeeper.
In addition to his wife Mildred, he is survived by three daughters, Sharon (Steve) Neal, Karen (Jerry) Watson, and Pat (Ken) Brown; eight sons, Jerry (Sue), Dick, Don (Gail), Fred (Sandy), Steve (Kathy) David (Linda) McCrate, Joe (Judy) Saksewski, and David (Margie) Saksewski; daughter in law, Chris Saksewski, numerous grandchildren, many great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Cecilia and Jeanne, and 3 brothers, John, Carl and Lane.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Edward Leon, 2 daughters in law, Diane and Carolyn, son John Saksewski, and one sister, Alice.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh with Fr. Daniel Wheeler officiating. Interment will follow in Brookside cemetery, Tecumseh. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, and from 1-4 p.m. Thursday in the Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh.
Additional visitations at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday and from 11:00 a.m. until time of funeral mass on Friday. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church Pew Cushion Fund.
Arlene L. Beach
Age 72, of Adrian, passed away August 1, 2004 at Herrick Memorial Hospital. She was born October 21, 1931, the daughter of John & Edith (Schrock) Hendershott. In 1968, she married Edward J. Beach, Sr., he survives.
In addition to her husband Edward, she is survived by her children; Korlis "Cookie" (Jimmie) Garland of Adrian, Agnes Arlene Long of Findlay, OH, Betty Jean of Findlay, OH, Robert Beach of Adrian, Guy Beach of Adrian, Ruth Ann Beach of Wauseon, OH, and Pat Beach of Adrian, one sister Rose Lawson of Adrian, four brothers; John Hendershott of Adrian, Orville Hendershott of Toldeo, Bill Hendershott and Henry Hendershott both of Adrian, and a host of grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son Edward Beach, Jr., her grandson Jamie Garland, and her parents.
Graveside Services will be held 2:30 PM Thursday in Oakwood cemetery, with Rev. Ron Sparks officiating. At Arlene's request, cremation has taken place. Arrangements by Purse Funeral Home, Adrian.
Charles R. Van Aken,
of Dexter, MI died August 7, 2004 at Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor. He was 81 years old. He was born in Dexter, MI, on the 31st of May, 1923, to Addison D. Van Aken and Maude (Garn) Van Aken. He was among the last of the native sons of Dexter having been born there in the Village of Dexter and residing there until his death.
He married Rosemary Mathews on July 2, 1949. She preceded him in death on March 4, 2003. He was educated at the Dexter High School, and was an alumnus of The University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, the War College, the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, and the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 as an Aviation Cadet and received his Commission as a Second Lieutenant (Navigator) on April 22, 1943. He saw duty overseas with the 489th Bomb Group in the 8th Air Force.
In private life he became a pharmacist, served a Residency with the Hospital Pharmacy in the University of Michigan Hospital, and retired from the State Mental Health system in 1988 where he worked as Director of Pharmacy at the Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital. He was active in the education of other pharmacists and found great satisfaction as a preceptor in training his pharmacy interns. He also found a niche in the education system in the hospital as a lecturer on geriatric medicine, which he continued throughout Southeastern Michigan in hospitals and nursing homes after he retired from the state Mental Health System. He spent many hours since he retired in volunteer work in the community, some at his parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter, and most recently with the Dexter Senior Citizens Center interviewing Seniors and taking their oral histories.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Rosemary, one brother Douglas A. and a sister, Fern M..
He is survived by a son Thomas (Diane) of West Palm Beach, Florida; a daughter Catherine (Mark) McCoy of Ellicott, Maryland; one brother Richard (Vella Dean) of Monroe, MI; a wonderful sister in law Vivian French (Richard); one granddaughter Jessica Van Aken; devoted friends Steve & Linda Hunt, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces,
The body has been cremated at his request. The family will receive friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter from 6 - 8 PM Thursday, September 16, 2004, with a Scripture Service at 7:30 PM. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 17, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter with Fr. Brendan Walsh as Presider. Friends may call at the church from 10:00AM until the time of Mass. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery, Dexter, with Military Honors performed by the Washtenaw County Honor Guard.
The family requests that those who wish to give memorials that they be made in his name to the St. Joseph Building Fund in lieu of flowers, or in his memory to the A. D. Otis Edward White "Jack"
age 79, of Onsted, formerly of Pulaski, VA, died June 22, 2004 at home. He was born April 6, 1925 in Pulaski, Virginia, the son of Lawrence & Gracey (Hughett) White.
He served his country in the U.S. Army from June 6, 1943 to July 6, 1946 during WWII. He also served from July 26, 1949 to December 19, 1952 in the Korean Conflict. He was employed at Tecumseh Products Company for 34 years retiring in 1987.
He married Ruby Irene Duncan on July 21, 1953 in York, South Carolina.
She survives.
In addition to his wife Ruby he is survived by a son, Roger Wayne White of Britton MI; 3 daughters, Linda Kay Goll of Adrian, MI Brenda Gay Evers of Cement City, MI and Cynthia Fay Shippy of Henderson, CO; brother, Theodore Ward of Elkton, KY; 6 sisters, Dorothy Burton or Adrian, MI, Nancy Duncan and Darline Barrett of Whitmore Lake, MI, Maxine Harris of Midlothian, VA, Nadine Harless of Suffolk, VA, and Shelvy Covey of Pulaski, VA; 4 grandsons, Mike Evers, Jeremy Johnson, Travis White, and Jacob Shippy; 2 granddaughters, Mandy Hitt and Rhonda Shippy, and two great grandsons, Joshua Hitt and Kyle Tompkins.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, June 26, 2004 at Purse Funeral Home, 2959 N. Adrian Hwy. (M52) Adrian, MI, 49221, with Rev. Ron Sparks officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until time of services Saturday in the funeral home. Interment will follow in North Rome cemetery with Military Honors performed by Adrian VFW Post 1584 Annis Fint.
Joyce Ann Cleghorn,
age 64, of Adrian, died June 24, 2004. She was born August 27, 1939, in Adrian, MI, the daughter of Karl and Thelma (Horton) Strobel.
She is survived by her children, Ronald L. Cleghorn, Devin G. Cleghorn, Joy E. McMahan, and Karl V. Cleghorn, eleven grandchildren, and one great grandchild, and one uncle Donald Horton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Jeanette Pulin and Dorothy Strobel..
Memorial Services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, in the Purse Funeral Home, Adrian, with Rev. Larry Johns officiating. Memorial Contributions can be made either to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
