Jeanne Marie Drum
Jeanne Marie Drum, 65, Cheboygan, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 after many years of surviving cancer.
She and her family had visited the Cheboygan area for over 40 years. Having enjoyed the area so much, she and her husband retired here in 1999.
Jeanne is survived by her husband, Steve; two sons, Larry Drum of Clearwater, Fla., and Matt Drum of Crescent City, Ca.; her mother, Virginia Buechler of Marshall, Ill., and brother, Dr. James Buechler of Terre Haute, Ind.

Ruth Nau
Ruth Nau, 82, Cheboygan passed away at her home Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008.
Ruth was born in Cheboygan Dec. 26, 1925. She was the last of a family of 10, born to Everett and Jesse Carter.
In her younger days, Ruth enjoyed hunting, fishing, knitting and crocheting. She was an avid CB’er since 1958, known by many as "Rosie’s Base." Ruth retired from Center Tool in Cheboygan in 1980. Ruth also enjoyed selling Avon products for over 27 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Melody (Jeff) Budzinski and Sherry (Paul) Phillips of Prescott; granddaughter Jesse Budzinski of Cheboygan; grandson Paul (Heather) Phillips of Prescott and grandson James (Jenny) Phillips of Algers; great grandsons Dominick, Michael, and Aaron Phillips; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son Bill "Terry" Nau and a daughter-in law, Rochelle Nau.
Friends may call at the Nordman Funeral Home on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008 at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Rev. Jeff Dinner will officiate. Burial will take place in Pinehill cemetery in the spring.
Mary Jane Colburn
Mary Colburn, 72, Afton passed away Monday, December 1, 2008 at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey.
Mary was born in Lansing Sept. 2, 1936, the daughter of Earl and Rose Ann (Lownsberry) Clementson. She married George Colburn Aug. 30, 1952 in Cheboygan County. She was employed for many years with Standard Products in Gaylord until retiring a few years ago.
Mary enjoyed traveling when she was young, living in Washington and Arizona before returning to northern Michigan. She loved to read and was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses of Indian River.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, George; one son, Earl G. (Ruth) Colburn of Afton; three grandchildren, Sandy (Wayne) Maves of Indian River, Stacey (John) Barney of Afton, Sharon (Jeff) Hush of Afton; five great grandchildren, Cole, Hanna, Weston, Russell and Riley; a brother, Fred Clementson of Afton; and a sister, Carla Jones of Graying.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Betty Ann Rueckert.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Indian River on South Straits Highway. Brother Gary Barney will officiate.
Nordman Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Norman L. Rubert
Norman L. Rubert, 70, passed away at his Koehler Township home on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.
Norm was born Sept. 9, 1938 in Detroit. He was the son of Earl and Edna (Graf) Rubert. He grew up in Detroit and in 1951 moved with his family to Indian River. He graduated from Inland Lakes High School in 1957. Norm attended Henry Ford Community College Trade Center, where he received tool and die training.
On Feb. 1, 1964 he married the former Susann Tomasovic in Detroit. The couple made their home in Dearborn Heights until 1972, when they moved to Indian River.
Norm was employed as a tool and die engineer at Link Industries in Indian River, the former Warner Manufacturing in Cheboygan. He retired from Cooper Standard Products in Gaylord in 2003.
He loved the outdoors and especially liked hunting, fishing, boating and camping. He was a member of the Indian River United Methodist Church, Indian River Sportsman’s Club and the N.R.A.
Norm is survived by his wife, Sue; sons Tim and Bill Rubert, both of Indian River; grandson Bill Rubert, Jr.; step grandchildren, Mike and Bill Crawford and Jason Parrott; great grandchildren, Shianne, Jeremiah and Mitchell; a brother, Gerald (Nancy) Rubert of Indian River; and several nieces and nephews. Norm was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008 at the Indian River United Methodist Church. Pastor Gary Step will officiate. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from noon until the time of service at 2 p.m.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Indian River United Methodist Church or Hospice of the Straits.

Noreen M. Caraway
Noreen Marie Donovan Caraway, 66, Stockbridge, Ga. died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at Henry Medical Center.
Noreen was born in Cheboygan on July 28, 1942, the daughter of the late Ethel Chimner Donovan Sarazin and Alfred Timothy Donovan.
Noreen was a member of St. James Catholic Church in McDonough, Ga. and she was well known for her generous spirit. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and also a great cook.
She was also preceded in death by her infant son, Patrick Dean Swank; and her brothers, John, Tim, and Ricky Donovan.
Survivors are sons David (Lynn) Swank and Harry (Kelli) Caraway; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all from Georgia; sisters Grace (George) Rowley, Mary Donovan, Jean (Buck) Pavlik, Patricia Ozybko and Edith (Ken) Blust, all of Michigan; a sister-in-law, Diane Donovan, also of Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Cheboygan at a later date.
David G. Nieland
David G. Nieland passed away peacefully at Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, Fla. on Dec. 6, 2008 following a short illness.
Dave was born in Highland Park in 1922, the son of Charles and Mary Nieland. He attended Dearborn High School and graduated from Michigan State University in 1949.
Dave was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, and served in Bougainville, the Solomon Islands and Luzon, earning the Purple Heart.
He spent his working years teaching and coaching in Wolverine, Belleville, Alanson and Mackinaw City, retiring in 1984. He continued to be an energetic supporter of athletics throughout his life, attending local football games through this past fall before heading to Florida for the winter, where he enthusiastically watched Michigan State football and basketball games until two days before his passing.
Dave was a longtime Rotarian and member of Cheboygan Golf Club. He enjoyed golfing with his many friends, attempting to beat them out of hard-earned pocket change.
He married Betty McGee in 1948, and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Nancy (Bob) Sawyer of Gaylord, Dan (Wendy) of Cheboygan, Tim (Ronnie) of Belleville and Ken (Denise) of Saukville, Wisc.; his brothers Clifton and Paul; and grandchildren David and Katy Sawyer, Corey and Jeff (Amber) Nieland and Taylor Nieland.
A memorial service to celebrate Dave's life will be planned in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Straits, 722 South St., Cheboygan, MI 49721.
James R. Tibbits
James "Jim" R. Tibbits, 68, Erwin, Tenn. and Onaway, died Dec. 7, 2008 at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital in Erwin.
Jim was born Feb. 20, 1940 in Richmond to Lee Harold and Alma Viola (Parlow) Tibbits. On May 13, 1961, he married Betty Rae Kutz in Monroe.
Jim was the kindest person you would ever know. He loved helping, talking, and visiting with family, friends, and even strangers. He enjoyed going to the shooting range and target practicing. His hobby was re-keying locks and had collected over a thousand locksets.
The couple raised their children in Onaway 1967-1988, then moved to Erwin. Jim worked as an electrician at Proctor and Gamble in Cheboygan before moving to Tennessee, where he worked for Bud Wheel as an electrician.
Survivors include sons Randy (Shelly) Tibbits of Onaway, Wayne (Linda) Tibbits of Glasgow, Ky., Glenn (Robin) Miller and James Miller, all of Roscommon; daughters Linda (Jerry) Northrop of Grayling and Pamela (John) Hathaway of Zeeland; sister Nancy (Dave) Shoenherr of Richmond; 15 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Rae Tibbits, on Nov. 8, 2007; and an infant son, Victor Tibbits.
Visitation is Tuesday Dec.16, from 4-8 p.m. at the Chagnon Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Onaway, with the Rev. Father Thomas Dominiak officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery inTower.

Margaret LaVigne
Margaret "Marge" LaVigne, 87, Cheboygan passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2008 at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, Extended Care Unit (Larson Hall).
Marge was born Dec. 27, 1920 in Zeeland to Hendrikje and Henrietta (Abraham) Palmbos. The Palmbos family migrated to Zeeland from the Netherlands and Marge attended school in Hudsonville where she graduated. She married Thomas LaVigne in 1953 in Hudsonville.
Marge began her working life at a pickle canary in southwestern Michigan. After marrying Tom, they operated several gas stations in both southwestern and northern Michigan. They began their retirement in Topinabee. For several years, she and Tom spent the winter months in Texas with friends. In the early 1990s, they moved into a home in Cheboygan across from McDonald's.
Following Tom's death, Marge moved to the Cheboygan Housing Commission's senior citizen's complex on Lincoln Avenue until her sight failed and she was no longer able to take care of herself. She then moved into Larson Hall in April 2008, where she lived until her death.
Marge was a fun loving lady who enjoyed going to the local restaurants for morning coffee and visit with her many friends.
Survivors include her stepdaughter, Mary (Bill) Durfey; four grandchildren, Roderick Durfey, Tammy Ladd (Durfey), Amy Bur (Durfey) and Amanda Hyde (Durfey), five great grandchildren, Melisa Jarvis, Samantha Ladd, William Durfey, II, Justin Hyde and Zachary Rovenko; and three great-great grandchildren, Melody, Addison and Owyne.
Besides her husband Tom, Marge was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Henrietta and Lillian; and four brothers, Harold, Harvey, Clarence (Kelly) and Donald.
A memorial service for Marge will be held in the spring on a date to be announced. She will be laid to rest near her husband in Maple Grove cemetery in Inverness Township.
Arrangements are being handled by the Christian Funeral Home.
