Earl Manuel, 70
BEAUGRAND TOWNSHIP - Earl Manuel, 70, of 12182 Inverness Trail Road, passed away at his home on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002. Earl was born on Feb. 5, 1932, the son of Earl and Minnie (Socha) Manuel. He married Ursula Skiera on Jan. 22, 1955, in Detroit. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954. He worked at the Cheboygan Manufacturing Co. from August 1956 until 1981, when they moved out of the state. Since then he has enjoyed hobbies such as farming, gardening, logging, enjoying his sawmill, woodworking, planting fruit and nut trees the last few years until he lost his sight a year ago, along with many other illnesses. Earl always said we should leave the earth better than we found it. He didn't get to see his fruit trees blossom for the first time as he was in the hospital at the time. He also was active in St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Ursula; daughters Janice Heilman, Lynn (Bob) Hoyt and Beverly Manuel; and a son, Earl. Also still friends of the family are Mike Heilman and Theresa Daleski Manual, all of whom live in Cheboygan. Also surviving are sisters Helen Armantrout and Beatrice Graham, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Michael in 1972. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 11, 2002, at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Cheboygan. Services were provided by the Charles Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may give to the family to help pay for medical expenses or to Hospice of the Straits or St. Thomas Lutheran Church.
Thomas Schramm, 86
LINCOLN PARK, Mich. - Thomas Schramm, 86 years old of Lincoln Park, Mich., and formerly of Cheboygan, passed away in Lincoln Park on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002. Visitation was held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at Christian Funeral Home. The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 11, 2002, at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the charity of your choice. Envelopes for this purpose are available at the funeral home.
Lillian A. Towers, 92
ROGERS CITY - Lillian A. Towers, 92, of Benton Township, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Tendercare Nursing Home in Rogers City. She was born June 11, 1909, in Jeanette, Pa., the daughter of August and Pauline (Ertman) Gerber. She grew up in Detroit and attended public schools there. On June 15, 1929, she married Chester P. Towers in Detroit. The couple made their home in Detroit while spending their summers at their Benton Township cottage. Mr. Towers preceded her in death in 1975, and she continued to make her home between Detroit and Benton Township. Mrs. Towers enjoyed art, music and gardening. She is survived by a son, Delmar (Marylou) Towers of Ocqueoc, Mich.; grandsons Bruce (Crystal) Towers of Fargo, N.D., Craig (Kristine) Towers of Indian River and Kevin (Sherri) Towers of Marquette; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her three brothers and two sisters. There will be no visitation or funeral service. Lintz Funeral Home of Indian River cared for the family.
Robert Jordan, 56
CHEBOYGAN -- Tuscarora Township Fire Chief Robert Jordan, 56, of Indian River, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital. Jordan was born in Akron, Ohio, on Sept. 24, 1942, the son of Clarence and Ethel (Erwin) Jordan. In 1947 the Jordan family moved to the Indian River area. Bob attended Inland Lakes public schools in Indian River. On Oct. 13, 1962, he married Betty Bishop in Indian River, where the couple made their home. Bob was a mechanic by trade and owned and operated Clyde's Repair in Indian River. He was a long-time member of the Tuscarora Township Fire Department, serving as chief of the department for the last 30 years. In 1989 he was the community's recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. He was currently vice president of the Cheboygan County Fireman's Association and has been a board member of the Cheboygan County Ambulance Board for several years. He had been a DNR keyman for 40 years. He also was a member of Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 4046 in Indian River. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his sons, Robert Jordan Jr. and Darcy (Wendy) Jordan, both of Alanson, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Douglas in 1983 and his brother, Ronald, in 1966. Visitation will take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the Cross in the Woods Catholic Church in Indian River. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002, at the church, with Chaplain John Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Ohioville cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the Tuscarora Township Fire Department. The Lintz Funeral Home of Indian River cared for the family.
James Allen Ramsey, 67
SAUGUS, Calif. -- James Allen Ramsey, 67. of Saugus, Calif., died on March 20, 2002. He was born in Cheboygan on Jan. 15, 1935, the son of Allen and Joyce Ramsey. They both preceded him in death, as did his brother, William. Survivors include his wife, Janet; daughters Renee and Susan, sister Madonna, brothers Harlan and Grant, stepsons George, Greg and Bobbie, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Eternal Valley Funeral Home of Newhall, Calif., served the family.
Florence A. Newman, 92
CHEBOYGAN -- Florence A. Newman, 92, of Cheboygan, passed away Wednesday evening, June 5, 2002, at the Extended Care Unit of Cheboygan Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Newman was born in Monticello, Wash., the daughter of William and Huldah (Amundsen) Olson. She attended Cheboygan schools and graduated from Cheboygan High School and later from County Normal.
She married William Newman on April 21, 1938, in Cheboygan. Mr. Newman preceded her in death in 1990.
Mrs. Newman was employed for several years at the Garment Factory in Cheboygan and later as a cook at the Step Inn restaurant for more than 25 years.
She loved to play bing, cards and cook for her family and friends. She was a member of the Rebeccas, the Eagles Auxiliary and the Maccabees, all of Cheboygan.
Mrs. Newman is survived by two daughters, Shirley (Joe) Tornovish of Cadillac and Rayma Newman of Cheboygan; two sons, Bill (Sue) Newman of Millerville, Mo., and Gary (Marva) Newman of Perry, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister-in-law, Lois Olson of Cheboygan. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; three children; and a brother, Stan Olson.
Visitation will be conducted from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, June 7, 2002, at the Nordman Funeral Home in Cheboygan. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Harry A. "Budd" Wagner officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Hill cemetery at Aloha.
Memorial contributions may be given to St. Thomas Building Fund or Larson Hall Activity Fund.
Walker Russell, 71
CHEBOYGAN -- Walker Russell, 71, of Cheboygan, passed away late Monday evening, June 3, 2002, at Cheboygan Health Care Center, where he had been a resident for only two days.
Mr. Russell was born in Cheboygan on May 15, 1931, the son of Raymond and Cecilia (Gaynor) Russell.
Walker served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1949 to 1952 and then in the Merchant Marine for several years. He was then employed for many years as a cook and baker on commercial ships until his retirement. Walker married the former Theresa Ptasnik in Cheboygan in 1982.
He enjoyed gardening and country music.
Walker is survived by his wife, Theresa; one son, Rusty "Kerry" Russell of Cheboygan; and two grandchildren, Daniel and Cody.
Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were made from the Nordman Funeral Home.
Donald F. Babcock, 69
PETOSKEY -- Donald F. Babcock, age 69, of Brutus, passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
Don was born on Dec. 9, 1932, in Detroit, the son of Leslie and Marjorie Babcock and brother to Barbara (Jerry) Gilleran of Watervliet, Mich. On Sept. 10, 1955, he married Joanne Hanson. He was a loving husband to Joanne and loving father to Susan Dionne (Scott) of Marquette, Mich., Brian (Shannon) of Savage , Minn., Robert (Nicki), of Brutus and Cheryl Thies (Patrick) of Lakeville, Minn. In 1971 he moved his family north to Brutus, locating on the West Side of Burt Lake. In 1972 he was elected supervisor and assessor for Burt Township, which office he had held until his death.
In 1977 he built and operated the first 30-lane bowling alley in Cheboygan County (Spare Time Lanes). It was operated by the family for 12 years and sold in 1989. He was a past president of the Cheboygan Rotary Club. He was a member of the St. Clement Church in Pellston and served on the Church Council. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Thomas and Michelle Dionne; Brianna, Chelsie and Alicia Babcock; Bradley, Gregory, Cory and Timothy Babcock; and Celina Thies, who will miss him dearly because he was very much a part of their lives. He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant brothers.
Visitation for Don will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at St. Clement Church. There will be a rosary following the visitation. There will be a viewing at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Pellston. Funeral services for Don will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Sylvester Micek, OFM, officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cheboygan Hospice of the Straits and/or St. Clement Catholic Church.
Fannie L. Daniels, 79
CHEBOYGAN -- Fannie L. Daniels, 79, of Cheboygan, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002 at home.
A resident of Cheboygan since 1961, Fannie was born Nov. 11, 1926 in Paducah, Ky., the daughter of James and Angeline (Latondras) Maddix. On Jan. 15, 1944, in Green Bay, Wis., she married Walter Daniels, who survives.
She was a member of St. Mary's/St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan, had been a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and watching wildlife.
She is survived by her husband, Walter, of Cheboygan; one daughter, Linda Goodrich of Cheboygan; one son, Walter Jr. (Sally) Daniels of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Effie (Alvin) Trepanier of Green Bay and Loula Wildfong of Traverse City; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, an infant son Felix, two sisters, Shirley Stammer and Alice Maddix, and two brothers, James and Walter Maddix, preceded her in death.
Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2002 at the Christian Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday Aug. 3, at St. Mary's/St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan, with the Rev. Paul Megge officiating, and entombment was in Ft. Howard Memorial Park mausoleum in Green Bay.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice, or Cheboygan Catholic Community Campaign. The Christian Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Leonard P. Grabiec, 72
PETOSKEY -- Leonard P. Grabiec, 72, of Wolverine, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at the Bortz Health Care Facility.
A funeral Mass for Leonard will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 5, 2002, at Cross in the Woods Catholic Church in Indian River. Visitation was conducted from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey.
