Bertha Lindholm Rumora
Devoted wife, mother and educator, Bertha Lindholm Rumora, 82, a longtime resident of Grosse Pointe Farms, died on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, after a long illness.
Mrs. Rumora was born in Kinney, Minn., on April 13, 1919 and later moved to Michigan where she met her husband Matthew G. Rumora, who preceded her in death in 1980.
Mrs. Rumora graduated from Wayne State University, with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in education. She taught third grade for 25 years in the Detroit school system and retired from Lillibridge Elementary School in 1983.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care Mrs. Rumora received during her long illness.
She is survived by five children: Margaret (Ray) Beeman, Janet Epperson, Thomas (Martha) Rumora, Judge Matthew R. (Kathleen) Rumora and James (Susan) Rumora. Mrs. Rumora has 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Verheyden Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Park. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Paul Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Farms on Saturday, Nov. 10. Interment is at Resurrection cemetery in Clinton Township.

Grace L. Ryan
Former Grosse Pointe resident Grace L. Ryan, 84, of West Bloomfield, died on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the Alterra Clarebridge Assisted Living Center in Grand Blanc.
Mrs. Ryan was a retired secretary for the Detroit Board of Education. She was also a lifetime member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her daughters, Grace (Dale) Novak and Sally (Robert) Bessert and grandchildren Stephen Novak, Darren Novak and Kelly Novak and Ryan Bessert, Kevin Bessert and Emily Bessert. She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth C. Ryan.
A funeral service was held on Friday, Nov. 9, at the A. J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), in Royal Oak. Interment is at White Chapel cemetery in Troy.

Elizabeth Prescott Walker
Elizabeth "Liz" Prescott Walker, 75, of Harrisville, formerly of Greenbush and Grosse Pointe Farms, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Dec. 15, 1925, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Joel Henry and Ruth (Weber) Prescott. She married
Richard D. Walker on May 23, 1959, and they had one son, Richard "Rick" D. Walker II.
She received a B.A. in English from Western College of Ohio. Her lifelong love of literature lead her, at various times, to own book stores, collect thousands of books, and write book reviews for local and regional newspapers, including the Grosse Pointe News.
Mrs. Walker was a member of the Quota Club and was active in the establishment of the Alcona County Humane Society. Animals like books, were one of her greatest passions.
She is survived by her beloved son Rick and his wife Jennifer of Winnetka, Ill., and by one of her many adored pets, Pudge.
Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband; parents and a brother, Joel Henry Prescott.
Arrangements were handled by the Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Detroit. Interment is at Woodlawn cemetery in Detroit.

Julie Asmus
Julie Asmus, 85, of Grosse Pointe Woods, died on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at the Mercy Beubrook Nursing Home in Rochester Hills.
Born in Detroit, Mrs. Asmus was a 1933 graduate of Southwestern High School.
She was a homemaker and an active member of the Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by a son, Thomas (Mary) Asmus and a daughter, Susan Allum and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Carl Asmus.
Arrangements were handled by the A. H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 1, at Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church.

Leland Karl Bates
Leland Karl Bates, 63, died at his home in Pentwater, on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001.
The former Grosse Pointe resident, who also owned a home in Palm Beach, Fla., was an award-winning designer and president of Bates and Company Interior Designers.
Mr. Bates was born in Hart on Aug. 18, 1936. After graduating from Michigan State University, he was employed by the J. L. Hudson Company in their design studio. From there, he went to work for William Austin Interiors before establishing his own firm. He was later named best traditional interior designer by Detroit Monthly magazine and selected by The Detroit News as one of the three best designers in metropolitan Detroit.
An avid international traveler, he made many friends throughout the world.
Mr. Bates was a former member of the Board of Trustees of both the Michigan Opera Theatre and the Barat House. He also enjoyed memberships in the Pentwater Historical Society, the Pentwater Yacht Club, Lincoln Hills Golf Club and the Governor's Club of Palm Beach.
Mr. Bates is survived by his mother, Helen Templar Bates; a brother Merle (Linda) Bates; sisters Margaret (Richard) Faller and Judy (Dale) Conner and eight nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Leland Bates and his brother Richard Bates.
Services were held privately.

John Jachimec
John Jachimec, age 80, of Grosse Pointe Park, died of congestive heart failure on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Kindred Hospital in Detroit after a lengthy stay at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit.
Born in the Ukraine in 1921, Mr. Jachimec attended diplomatic school in Switzerland until the outbreak of World War II.
He emigrated to the United States after the War and opened J. J.'s Barbershop on Kercheval in Grosse Pointe Park in 1954.
He is survived by many friends and loyal customers.
Arrangements were handled by the Verheyden Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Park. Interment is at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Detroit.
Donations may be sent in Mr. Jachimec's name to the Capuchin Monastery in Detroit.
Keith R. Klempay
Harper Woods resident Keith R. Klempay, 23, dear son of Robert and Karen Klempay, died on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Born in Detroit, Mr. Klempay was a 1996 graduate of Grosse Pointe North High School. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Business Administration from Wayne State University in 2000.
Mr. Klempay worked in management information systems for Pulte Homes since 1999. His hobbies included collecting Star Wars memorabilia, computers and video games.
Survivors include a sister Kristin (William) Schram; grandparents Margaret Klempay and Arnold and Kathleen Gentry; aunts and uncles, Michael (Jackie) Klempay, George (Peggy) Klempay, Thomas (Renee) Klempay and Joseph (Laurie Lancaster) Klempay, Stephen Klempay and Michael Gentry; a great-uncle Otto Lehre and a great-aunt Joan Gardiner.
Arrangements were handled by A. H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores. Interment is at White Chapel cemetery in Troy.
John Mansfield
John Mansfield, 83, beloved father of Grosse Pointe Farms resident Patrick Mansfield, died of lung and heart complications on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, while surrounded by his seven children at the home of his daughter Sheila Miller in Missoula, Mont.
Born Oct. 15, 1918, in New York City, he was raised in Great Falls, Mont., where his parents ran the Mansfield Grocery Store.
He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1937 and from the University of Montana in 1942. He served in the United States Army until 1945.
Mr. Mansfield married
Mary Leary of Burke, Idaho, in 1943.
He worked as an office manager at the Phillips Petroleum Refinery until his retirement in 1985.
Mr. Mansfield was a member of the Christian Family Movement, Central Roundtable, Central Catholic High School Board and the Quarterback Club. He was also an active force in Holy Spirit Parish.
In addition, he served as a timekeeper, religious educator, bookkeeper, sports fan, taxi driver, leader, coach and counselor.
His love, integrity and warmth will be missed.
Mr. Mansfield is also survived by his sons Daniel Mansfield of Helena, Mont. and Michael Mansfield of Mercer Island, Wash.; daughters Maureen Conlen of Tacoma, Wash., Kippy Redman of McGregor Lake, Mont. and Meghan McGree of Yakima, Wash.; 27 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Schnider Funeral Home in Great Falls, Mont. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Great Falls.
