Evelyn K. Brammer
Evelyn K. Brammer, 83, formerly of Grosse Pointe Park, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, in Dearborn.
Born in Altamont, Ill., to Walter and Pearl Klitzing, Mrs. Brammer was a graduate of Altamont High School and MacMurry College in Jacksonville, Ill.
She taught high school English before marrying her husband, the late Dr. Forest E. Brammer, a professor and chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department at Wayne State University.
Mrs. Brammer was a very active member of the Wayne State University Faculty Wives Club, serving as an officer on the board of directors and chairing many committees. She was an effective and tireless fundraiser for projects that impacted the University including the chimes on campus, student scholarships, loan funds and grants for special projects.
She was also a dedicated member of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church where she was the past moderator of the Presbyterian Women, Sunday School Superintendent and served on numerous church committees.
Mrs. Brammer was also the past president of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter CV, a parent volunteer working on ticket sales and costumes for Grosse Pointe Children's Theater and a leader in the Junior Great Books program in the Grosse Pointe Public Schools.
Survivors include her sons, Robert F. Brammer and William E. Brammer; daughters, Mary E. Brammer and Susan Gedert; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Micki Leslie.
Arrangements were handled by the Verheyden Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Park. A memorial service was held on Monday, Oct. 22, at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church in Grosse Pointe Farms. Interment was at the Grosse Pointe Memorial Church Columbarium.

Elizabeth Claire Plaggemeyer Candler
Elizabeth Claire Plaggemeyer Candler, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, in Grosse Pointe Farms.
Known to her friends as Betty Claire, Mrs. Candler was born in Indian Village in Detroit and graduated from Grosse Pointe Country Day School. Upon her marriage to the late Joseph Boyer Candler in 1952, she moved to Grosse Pointe.
A dedicated community volunteer, Mrs. Candler served on the board of directors of both the Sigma Gamma Association and The Detroit Institute for Children, an organization founded by Sigma Gamma.
Throughout her life she was active in the affairs of the Episcopal Church, first with Christ Church, Detroit and later with Christ Church Grosse Pointe where she served on the vestry.
In addition, Mrs. Candler was a former board member of the Neighborhood Club, The Garden Club of Michigan and LocalMotion, a foundation seeking to increase awareness of environmental issues. She was also a former member of the Junior League of Detroit.
Mrs. Candler is survived by her sons Henry Ernest (Mary Alice) Candler, II and Joseph Boyer (Barbara) Candler, Jr.; daughters Greer Candler Lerchen and Libby Claire Candler; grandchildren Richard Candler, Joanne Linehan, Lorna Candler, Mark Candler, Lindsay Candler, Leland Candler and Claire and Reed Lerchen.
A memorial service was held on Monday, Oct. 22, at Christ Church, Grosse Pointe.

Mary F. DeMercurio
Mary F. DeMercurio, 80, dear wife of Edward DeMercurio, died of cardiac arrest Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, in Homosassa, Fla.
The former Grosse Pointe Woods resident was born in Detroit to Tony and Jennie Mara. Mrs. DeMercurio was a graduate of Miller High School and Wayne State University. She worked as a teacher for the Detroit Board of Education for 28 years.
Her hobbies included bridge, golf, cooking and enjoying people.
Survivors include her sons Salvatore (Kathleen) DeMercurio, Anthony DeMercurio and Edward DeMercurio, Jr.; five grandchildren; and a sister Susan Mara. She was predeceased by her brothers Sam and John and sisters Lena and Jennie.
Arrangements were handled by the Verheyden Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Park. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul Catholic Church, 157 Lakeshore in Grosse Pointe Farms. Mrs. DeMercurio was cremated and will be interred in the St. Paul Church Columbarium.

Natalie Fossee
Natalie Fossee, beloved wife of R. Burke Fossee, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, after a long illness, surrounded by family, looking out into the garden of her Grosse Pointe Woods home.
Mrs. Fossee had a deep and abiding love for nature, flowers and, most of all, her blended family.
When she married
her husband 34 years ago, she was the mother of a daughter and a son and he had four sons of his own. At no time did she ever use the word step when referring to any of the children.
As an artist, Mrs. Fossee was talented in several media, but specialized in working with pressed flowers which she raised and dried. She used them to create unique and beautiful cards and bookmarks. Her work was displayed in the Women's Hall of Fame in Lansing.
Mrs. Fossee was also interested in sailing, skiing, canoeing and mountain climbing in Colorado. Her family also noted her reputation as a "whiz-bang" ping-pong player.
According to her husband, Mrs. Fossee was, "the epitome of St. Paul's philosophy, 'and now abideth faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love.'"
Mrs. Fossee is also survived by her sons Daniel R. (Kimberly) Warner, Burke (Carol) Fossee III, Brian (Alka) Fossee, Mark (Sandra) Fossee; daughter Donna W. (Richard) Manczak; and grandchildren Erika Manczak, Lauren Warner, Austin Speer, Sean, Kevin, Ryan, Preston, Erica, Jessica, Brendan and Dane Fossee. She was predeceased by a son, Kevin.
Arrangements were handled by A. H. Peters Funeral Home of Grosse Pointe Woods. A memorial service was held on Oct. 7, at Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church. Interment is in White Chapel cemetery in Troy.
Charles Patrick Halat
Former Grosse Pointe Woods resident Charles Patrick Halat, 61, beloved husband of Jean Pearson Halat, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 at his residence in Charlotte, N.C., after a long battle with brain cancer.
Mr. Halat was born on March 17, 1940, in Detroit. He attended Wayne State University and was employed by the J. N. Fauver Company until he relocated to Charlotte in 1990 and began working for HPS.
A musician, Mr. Halat played the accordion and electric piano with a Detroit band. He was also an avid sailor who crewed on a boat that twice won first place in its class in the Port Huron to Mackinac Race. In addition, he enjoyed golf and fishing
He is also survived by a son Charlie Halat, Jr.; a daughter Beth Halat; parents Charles and Lottie Halat; a brother Frank Halat; and a sister Patricia Hallman.
Arrangements are being handled by Carolina Funeral and Cremation Center in Charlotte, N.C. A memorial Mass will be offered at St. John Cantius Church, 844 South Harbaugh in Detroit, at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church basement.

Jeanne Hartz
Former Grosse Pointe resident Jeanne Hartz, 83, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, of natural causes at the Bortz Health Care Center in Warren.
Mrs. Hartz was born in Springfield, Ill. She attended the University of Iowa and William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va.
She was an active member of the Grosse Pointe High School Mothers' Club, Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, the St. Clair Golf Club and the Harper Hospital Auxiliary.
A homemaker, Mrs. Hartz enjoyed reading, history, gardening, golf and spending time with her family.
Mrs. Hartz's interest in identifying ships that passed her riverfront home in St. Clair earned her the family nickname "Grandma Freighter Boat."
Survivors include her son Patrick (Peggy) Webb, daughters Prudence Riley (Charles) Billiu and Priscilla (Ronald) Schaupeter; step-sons, Jonathan (Susan) Hartz, Peter Hartz and Henry Hartz; step-daughter Mary Bradley; sisters Phyllis Hinman and Shirley Read and 12 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband H. Read Hartz and her brother Parker Anderson.
A private celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001.

Annette L. Olkowski
Annette L. Olkowski, dear wife of Frank J. Olkowski, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Mrs. Olkowski was born in Detroit on Aug. 10, 1928 to Norman and Anna Marie (Krause) Ballbach. She was a longtime resident of Grosse Pointe Woods.
She worked for the city of Grosse Pointe Woods as a clerk, most recently in the Department of Public Safety, retiring in May of 2001, after 25 years of service.
Mrs. Olkowski enjoyed teaching dancing, tap and theatrical arts as well as being involved in plays and musicals. She was also an avid reader.
Married for 50 years, she will be remembered by friends and family for her sense of pride and strong will.
Survivors also include her sons Glenn Olkowski, Dean (Melinda Clynes) Olkowski; daughters Kathy (Robert) Humiston and Gail Olkowski; grandchildren Anna, Gillian and Laurel Humiston; brothers Donald (Raymonde) Ballbach and Alan Ballbach; one nephew and two nieces.
Arrangements were handled by Betzler Funeral Home of Kalamazoo. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Unity of Kalamazoo.
