Durward L. Johnson
Durward L. Johnson, 88, of 719 N. James St., Ludington, died Wednesday, May 17 at Tendercare of Ludington. Durward L. Johnson was born July 31, 1917 in Ludington, the son of John F. and Britta A. (Anderson) Johnson. He grew up in Ludington, graduating from Ludington High School. He was married on July 10, 1944 to Clara I. Dust and she survives.
Better known to his family and friends as Dewey, he worked as custodian for the Ludington public school system, spending most of those years at Ludington High School.
He enjoyed good coffee and good conversation with his friends and will be missed by them.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 62 years, Clara; his daughter, Thensia Wood of Kalkaska; his son, Ward (Jill) Johnson of Simpsonville, S.C.; his grandchildren, Erin (Ryan) Moore of Kalkaska, Joel Wood of San Francisco, Calif., Tobin (Laura) Johnson of West Bend, Wis., Lukas (AnneMichelle) Johnson of Germantown, Md., Robin Johnson of New York, Heather Johnson; his great-grandchildren, Hayden Moore, Camden Moore, Elizabeth Johnson, Sarah Johnson, and Braeden Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, his son-in-law, Stafford and his grandson, Chad.
A memorial service for Mr. Johnson will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Emanuel Lutheran Church of Ludington with the Rev. James Friesner officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the church.

Richard W. Hartman
Mr. Richard W. Hartman, 77, of Pentwater, went home to be with the Lord, May 11. Mr. Hartman was born March 16, 1929 in Kalamazoo, the son of Joe and Mildred (Grimes) Hartman. Richard grew up in Kalamazoo, graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and received his bachelor of science degree from Western Michigan University.
Richard served his country for four years in the United States Air Force, during the Korean War. He was a life member of the VFW Post 6017. He married Dorothy L. Rohrer in April 1950. From 1962 until 1985 Richard had his own insurance agency in Otsego. He was an Otsego City Commissioner, school board member, a volunteer fireman for 25 years and served as an Allegan County Board of Supervisors. Over the years Mr. Hartman served on various boards and committees at both the state and national level for the Church of God. For many years he has been a member of the Michigan Association of Insurance Agents, serving as its president 1993-94.
The Hartmans have lived in Pentwater since 1978 and permanently in 1990 to the present. He started the Harbor/McKee Agency which he managed until his illness. He served on the Pentwater School Board, Village Council serving one year as Village President. He was a member of the Pentwater Yacht Club serving as commodore in 1997 and a member of the Pentwater Service Club.
Mr. Hartman is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Pentwater; children, Debra and Ronald Hartwell of West Bloomfield, Ann and Brad Rayle of Birmingham, Pamela and David Farmer of Clarkston; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his sister-in-law Madelyn Hartman of Anderson, Ind.; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Mildred Hartman; two brothers, Marvin J. Hartman and Gerald “Jerry” Hartman.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, May 17 at 11 a.m. from the Faith United Church of God, 3290 Walker Avenue NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49544-9431. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Faith United Church of God.

Laura Carmen Fisher
Laura Carmen Fisher, beloved mom and grandmother of Bellaire, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 10, 2006. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Ramotowksi; son, Lance Fisher; grandson, Brendan Topolowski; and granddaughter, Kaitlyn Fisher.
A memorial service for friends and family will be held at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home in Ludington at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 18. Darlene Clancy
Darlene Clancy, 40, of Fountain, passed away on Thursday March 16, 2006 at her home. She was born on Sept. 24, 1965 in Pittsburgh, Pa., the daughter of Frank Hauserman and Judy (Taylor) Hendrickson. On Sept. 22, 2001 Darlene married Randy Clancy in Free Soil. He preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 2006.
Darlene enjoyed collecting dolphins and dragons, crocheting, knitting and gardening.
Darlene is survived by her mother, Judy Hendrickson; children, Sarah (Aaron) Thorne, Desiree Watros, William Watros, Bruce King, Brandy Clancy, Brandon Clancy, Bradley Clancy, Joel Jones, Heather (Wayland) Dilts, Kenneth Mier Sr., Christopher (Alexis) Clancy and Danny (Kristen) Clancy; 14 grandchildren; two brothers, Dean and Bruce Hendrickson; sister, Helen Hendrickson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, husband and daughter, Tiffany Watros.
Funeral services for Darlene will take place at 7 p.m. tonight at Oak Grove Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Ludington with the Rev. Raymond Haner Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6 p.m. tonight until time of service.
Memorial contributions in memory of Darlene may be directed to the Clancy family, care of Sarah Thorne.

Margaret Heath Gilbert Barr
Margaret Heath Gilbert Barr, 97, a resident of the Croasdaile Village Retirement Home in Durham, N.C., died March 17, 2006. Mrs. Barr, better known to Ludington residents as Peg Gilbert, was born Feb. 14, 1909 in Hastings to George and Nora Heath. She was one of six siblings, all who predated her in death. She was educated in the Hastings school systems and attended Western Michigan University where she received a “Life Certificate in teaching.” She received her Bachelor of Education degree from National College of Education in Evanston, Ill.
She began her teaching career in Muskegon where she met and married Raymond Gilbert. She and Gilbert moved to Ludington in 1945 when her husband helped to form the Great Lakes Foundry and Machine Corporation. Raymond Gilbert was known in Ludington as an active choir director at Bethany United Methodist Church, an avid snow skier, and a second ward commissioner and later, commissioner at large. Raymond Gilbert died in 1963.
Peg Gilbert was a well-known Ludington kindergarten teacher, having taught hundreds of students mostly at Foster Elementary School. She retired in 1974 and married David Barr who predated her in death in 1990. She lived in Florida for several years until health forced her to move to a retirement home. While in Ludington, Mrs. Barr was active in civic activities, and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and later the United Methodist Church of Ludington.
Mrs. Barr was predated in death by her husbands, Raymond Gilbert and David Barr, and by a son, Gerald Gilbert. She is survived by one son, the Rev. Dr. Milton H. Gilbert of Goldsboro, N.C.; three granddaughters, Krista Thies, of Freeburg, Ill., Jacque Wilson, of Arlington, Tenn., and Sharon Albert of New Athens, Ill.; and two grandsons, Milton Heath Gilbert Jr, of Charlotte, N.C., and Mark Raymond Gilbert of Pittsburgh, Pa. She is further survived by seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at the Dorrell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ken Tabor, celebrant. A visitation will take place at 2 p.m. prior to the funeral. Memorial gifts may be given to the Croasdaile Village Retirement Home, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham, NC 27705. Mrs. Barr will be buried next to her late husband, Raymond Gilbert, in the Ludington City Cemetery.
