James R. Sexton, age 62, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2014, after a brief battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Odell Sexton. Surviving are his son, James Robert Sexton, along with his mother, Connie Riggs; a daughter, Morgan Poelman; three grandchildren, Katie, Gwendolen, and Hunter; sisters and brothers, Virginia (Fred) McGraff, Nancy (Burt) Harris, Caroline (Howard) Pennington, Luther Gilley, Charlotte (Dan) Kathan, Anne Cutler, Orville Sexton, Steven Sexton, Elaine Sexton; many nieces and nephews. Honoring Jim's life, a private family gathering will be held.

Lois Rentschler, age 86, of Grand Rapids, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 7, 2014. Lois was born and raised in Illinois and moved to Michigan in her twenties. She worked for insurance companies, Blodgett Hospital, the Michigan Blood Center, and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. Her husband, Charles; sister, Erma; and parents, Wilhelm and Kate Wallenstein, preceded her in death. Surviving are her children, Thomas Rentschler, Greg (Tari) Rentschler, Jill (Tim) Fletcher; grandchildren, Zachary Fletcher, Katie Fletcher; and niece, Kathleen Bunting. The funeral service will be held 11 am Friday, December 12, at Stroo Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Daniel Gruenwald officiating. Interment in Oakridge Cemetery, Marshall, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Hope Lutheran Church.

Joyce Hansel, age 81, of Caledonia, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, Scott and Evelyn; brother, Scott C. Graham; mother-in-law, Blanche (Hansel) Wilkins; and sister-in-law Patricia Farrow. Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, Thomas R.; their children, Thomas S. Hansel, Lynn (Lee) Jorgenson, Daniel (Cathy) Hansel; granddaughters, April (Matt) Sweedyk, Angela (Jordan) Parks; grandson, Kyle Jorgenson; great grandson, Ezekiel Sweedyk; sisters-in-law, Carol (Phil) Conley, Diane Graham; brothers-in-law, James Hansel, Gary (Jerri) Hansel; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1:30 pm Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Kentwood Baptist Church, 2875 52nd St. SE, with Pastor Richard Liverance officiating. Visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, or a charity of your choice.

Frederick Joseph Haslem, of Kentwood, MI, left this world to be with his Lord and Savior on December 9, 2014. He will be sadly missed by his wife of fifty-three years, Sandra Marie (Elliott) Haslem; sons, Mark Frederick Haslem (Christine), Steven Anthony Haslem (Barbara); grandchildren, Ethan Elias Haslem, Eden Elizabeth Haslem, Graham Rhys Gilman-Haslem, Fiona Lucille Gilman-Haslem; and brother, James M. Haslem. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick W. and Mary (Kailing) Haslem; a daughter, Linda Marie Haslem; and brother, William E. Haslem. From 1963 until his retirement in 1995, Fred was employed by State Farm Insurance as an accountant and auditor at the regional office in Marshall, MI. He was a member of St. Mary Church in Marshall, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Fred was an Air Force veteran, having served from 1951 to 1955, and was stationed in Korea during the war. He also served in the Naval Reserve prior to joining the Air Force. A native of Grand Rapids, Fred attended St. James school, Catholic Central, and in 1959, he received a degree in Business Administration from Aquinas College. During his active years, Fred enjoyed camping and gardening. He and Sandra also enjoyed many wonderful trips to visit their sons and grandchildren. Fred's family extends their thanks to the staff at Elmcroft Assisted Living of Kentwood for their excellent care in his final months, and also to the employees and volunteers of Gentiva Hospice who saw Fred through his final days. Thanks also to the Hillside Church family for their care, prayers, and support, and to the pastor of St. Mary Magdalen for his visits. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at Hillside Community Church, 1440 68th Street SE, Grand Rapids. There will be visitation at the church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A luncheon at the church will follow the service. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery in Grand Rapids will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hillside Community Church, or St. Mary Magdalen Church in Grand Rapids.

Valerie L. (Stauffer) Bierlein

Valerie L. (Stauffer) Bierlein, age 68, of Caledonia, went home to be with her Father in heaven on Tuesday, December 9, 2014. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 33 years, Jim; her children, Amberly (Bierlein) Fletcher, Alexandria Bierlein, Aaron and Kuala Bierlein; five grandchildren, three sisters; and one brother. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, December 15, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 9669 Kraft SE, with Fr. Pat Grile as celebrant. Interment in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of West Michigan. The family will greet relatives and friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, with a Rosary recited at 7:30 pm, at Stroo Funeral Home, and Monday prior to the service from 10-11 am at the church.

Richard W. "Dick" Dearborn, age 71, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2014. Dick liked classic cars and loved to garden. He was preceded in death by a brother, George Dearborn. Surviving are his wife, Jan; his children, Traci (Scott) Hesselberg, Steve Dearborn, Chris Dearborn; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Marion Crank and Dorothy McCoy; sisters-in-law, Mary Murnik, Joy Jeromin, Rena Rengo, numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held 1 pm Tuesday, December 16, at Stroo Funeral Home, with Rev. Evan Heerema officiating. Interment in Blain Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Crashes Landing or St. Judes Children's Hospital.

William R. "Bill" DeHaan, age 79, of White Cloud, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away unexpectedly in Florida on Saturday, December 13, 2014. Bill was a car salesman on Division Avenue for over 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Pearl DeHaan; brother-in-law, Gene Westra; sister-in-law, Bonnie DeHaan; nephew, Bruce DeHaan; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harriet and George Laird; and brother-in-law, Terry Laird. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Sandra; his son, William "Bill" Jr. and Michele DeHaan; grandchildren, Lauren, Paige, and Blake; sister and brothers, Pat Westra, Ed "Butch" DeHaan, Roger and Chris DeHaan; sister-in-law, Annette Kowatch; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
