Donald VanSpyker, age 86, of Kentwood, entered into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, August 30, 2015. Don was a truck driver, retiring from Central Transport, and also a master carpenter. Preceding him in death are his son, Gerald; brother, Edward and Louise VanSpyker; and sister-in-law, Gerry VanSpyker. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Marie (Sawyer); daughters, Donna (Daniel) Brinks of Kentwood, Deborah (John) Cortez of Holland, Linda (Jeff) Hirt of Grand Rapids; daughter-in-law, Pamela VanSpyker of Kentwood; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and soon one great-great granddaughter; brother, Bernard (Joan) VanSpyker of Florida; many nieces and nephews. Don was the ultimate carpenter who took on a multitude of construction projects right up to the end of his life. His work belief was "that the impossible just takes a little longer". He was a man of his word, very loyal and a champion of the underdog, stepping up to help family and strangers alike. In his retirement years, Don and Marie found an out of the way home in Hardee County, FL. A place that they loved and returned to in the winter. He enjoyed any type of craft from crocheted lawn chairs, scenic oil painting, woodcrafts and plastic mesh creations. He again stepped up to help the Spanish while involving himself with a small Spanish Mission in Bowling Green, FL. Dear to his heart was his wife who was right by his side in all his fruitful endeavors. Don was also an avid "motor head". From dirt track, short track, tri-oval, Silver Lake Sand Dunes, to Nascar. If it involved engines and tires, he was all in. Don led a full life and left no stone unturned in his quest to know as much as he could about everything. He departed this short, temporary earthly life with his trust in his Lord, our Lord, who blessed him with great abilities. The funeral service will be held 11 am Thursday, September 3, at Stroo Funeral Home, with Rev. Greg Howard officiating. Interment in Rosedale Memorial Park. Contributions in Don's memory may be made to Holland Baptist Church.
