Wilma Marie DuBois
Visitation: None
Service: The chapel at Maple Creek, 2000 32nd Street, at 10 AM on Saturday, April 16
Memorials: to Maple Creek/Lutheran Social, or to the charity of your choice.
Wilma Marie (Venlet) DuBois died peacefully on March 21, 2016. She was born on August 2, 1925 to Gerrit and Anna (VanderGalien) Venlet in Grand Rapids. She attended Oakdale Christian School and graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School. She married William F. DuBois on May 17, 1946 after he returned from service in the Army in World War II. She was a member of First Cutlerville Christian Reformed Church, and also was blessed by the sermons and Bible studies of Pastor Rebecca Ebb-Speese, Chaplain at Maple Creek, where Wilma lived for the past five years. She had strong faith in the Lord and trust in her Savior Jesus Christ.
Wilma was inveterately curious. Though her formal education ended after high school, she took every opportunity to learn, to explore, and to experience new adventures. She was an avid reader of non-fiction, and was not afraid to encounter ideas that challenged her own. She loved science. Despite her own limited education, she encouraged her children as they earned advanced degrees or developed expertise in their careers. The early years of her marriage were spent raising her five children and keeping the books for Bill’s construction business. A highlight of those years was the annual, month-long family camping trip to Ottawa Beach with the family next door, the Masselinks. Later, she worked for 10 years at Pine Rest Christian Hospital as an administrative assistant. In retirement, she and Bill traveled the country doing volunteer work for CRWRC, rebuilding storm-damaged homes in Minnesota, Florida, and elsewhere. She and Bill especially enjoyed spending winter months in Gulf Shores, Alabama, at the Lighthouse. Wilma marveled many times that someone like herself would have a life filled with such rich experiences. She traveled on four continents, visiting her daughter, Sharon, in Germany, and her daughter, Amy, in Guyana and Mozambique. Her traveling partner and best friend of 60 years, Agnes Masselink, was the spur Wilma sometimes needed to cross a rope bridge or climb a cliff to the top of a waterfall, both of which they did together in their mid-80s. Recently, Wilma celebrated her 90th birthday at a surprise boat cruise on Lake Macatawa, with all of her children and grandchildren in attendance. Until only a week before her death, Wilma was still fully engaged in life – going to Bible study, communicating via Facebook with her children, and living independently at Maple Creek. Wilma will be missed by her five children and their spouses: Rosanne (Joel) Brouwer, William (Cathy) DuBois II, Sharon VanDerLaan, Anthony (Heidi) DuBois, and Amy (John Zak) DuBois. She is also survived by two sisters, Ida Terry and Betty DeVries, and sister-in-law, Edna Venlet. Her brother, Jerry Venlet, preceded her in death. Wilma also leaves 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who loved their "Grandma-Great" very much. According to her wishes, a celebration of Wilma’s life will occur in the chapel at Maple Creek, 2000 32nd Street, at 10 AM on Saturday, April 16. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Maple Creek/Lutheran Social, or to the charity of your choice.
