Alena Olson
Died Feb. 24, 1998
Alena Olson, 86, of 7983 Outer Drive, Traverse City, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center following a brief illness.
Alena Grace Weiss was born May 21, 1911, to Fred J. and Mary E. (Quigley) Weiss in Ludington. She grew up in Ludington and lived her entire life here until moving to Traverse City in 1994.
She married Reuben J. Olson on June 23, 1934, in Ludington and he preceded her in death. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
She enjoyed cards, knitting and crossword puzzles. The majority of her knitting she donated to various hospitals and women’s resource centers.
In addition to her husband, Reuben, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and five sisters.
She is survived by one sister, Bessie Lyon of Traverse City, and several nieces and nephews.
Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery. In accordance with the deceased’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service at this time.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association; envelopes are available at Dorrell Funeral Home.
Cornelia Dibble
Died Feb. 24, 1999
Cornelia Dibble, age 95, of 319 E. Dowland St., died unexpectedly at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24 on arrival at Memorial Medical Center.
Services for Mrs. Dibble will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home with the Rev. John Christensen officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, and 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Juanita M. Boline
Died Feb. 26, 1999
Juanita M. Boline, age 68, of 1027 Daisy Lane, died at 10:50 p.m. Friday at Memorial Medical Center following an illness of several months.
Juanita M. Cocke was born Sept. 12, 1930, in Columbus, Ohio, and came to Ludington from Ohio in 1992. She was married to Richard M. Boline and he preceded her in death Jan. 31, 1998. She had been employed at Mason County Fruit Packers for the past seven years, until last December when illness forced her retirement. She was a member of the Ludington Chapter No. 508, Women of the Moose, the 40 and 8 Chapter No. 768 of Temple, Mich.
Surviving are one brother, Donald Cocke of Ludington; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois and William Meloney of Ludington; nieces, nephews and cousins.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation or funeral services.
Arrangements are by the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home.
Ralph Ivan Penland
Died Jan. 26, 1999
Ralph Ivan Penland, age 63, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 26, at St. Paul’s Retirement Community, South Bend, Ind., where he had made his home since moving from New Buffalo in April.
Mr. Penland was born Oct. 8, 1935, in Three Oaks, the son of Ralph L. and Violet (Anderson) Penland. He graduated from Ludington High School in 1954. He served his country in the United States Army during the peacekeeping mission in Korea. He was employed in the cost accounting department of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Burns Harbor, Ind., before his retirement in 1996 after 28 years of service.
Survivors include his sisters, Carol Christopher of Niles, Mary Ellen Colyer of Ludington, Doris Anthony of Benton Harbor and Norma Souers of Ludington; his brother, Roy Penland of Chandler, Ariz.; along with many nieces and nephews.
Services for Mr. Penland will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Pobocik Funeral Home, Three Oaks. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Chikaming Township. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Richard Paul Peterson
Died Feb. 4, 1998
Richard Paul Peterson, 73, of 410 N. Robert St., Ludington, died Wednesday at Memorial Medical Center following a brief illness.
Services for Mr. Peterson are tentatively scheduled for Saturday morning at the Dorrell Funeral home, with visitation prior to the service.
Mrs. Doris Scanlon
Died Jan. 9, 1999
Mrs. Doris Scanlon, age 65, went home to be with her Lord Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9.
She was born July 28, 1933, in Muskegon to William G. and Evea (Hughes) Morse (who later resided in Fountain) and had been a lifetime resident of the area.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Scanlon; three children, Roger (Gayle) Scanlon of Muskegon, Ronald (Dorene) Scanlon of Grand Haven, and Rochelle (Don) Westhof of Fruitport; seven grandchildren; one sister, Gay Christiansen of Ludington; one sister-in-law, Doralee Morse of Muskegon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Robert J. “Rob” Scanlon on Oct. 15, 1988, and by her brother, James Morse.
Services for Mrs. Scanlon will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at the Fellowship Reformed Church, 4200 E. Apple Ave., Muskegon.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Sytsema Funeral Home, 737 Apple Ave., Muskegon.
Memorial gifts may be directed to the building fund of Fellowship Reformed Church.
Jack W. Baltzer
Died Feb. 28, 1998
Jack W. Baltzer, 70, a former Ludington resident, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, at his home in Gary, Ind.
He was born May 11, 1927, in Ludington, the son of Amuel and Gertrude (Hengsler) Baltzer. He attended Ludington schools and graduated from Ludington High School in 1945, after which he joined the U.S. Navy. He then attended Michigan State University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree. While at Michigan State he was active in theater, speech and music organizations. He was an accomplished pianist and he loved animals. Following graduation he was employed at a large bank in New York City. Later he was an executive with General Motors in Detroit. For many years he held the position of dean of students at Coyne Electronics Institute in Chicago, where he remained until his retirement.
Survivors including two sisters, his twin sister Jo Ann (Dorence) Freed of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Margie (Keith) Bird of Coconut Creek, Fla., and five nieces, one nephew and several cousins, including Sue Baltzer, Carolyn (Ken) Steiner, Kay Sutton and S.L.E. Wanderer, all of Ludington.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has taken place. At the request of the deceased, there will be no service.
Memorials may be directed to the Community Church of Ludington, the Humane Society of Mason County or a charity of the donor’s choice.
