SAMUEL A. CHAMPION
Samuel A. Champion, 65, passed away Friday, March 12, 2004 at the Marlette Community Hospital.
He lived in the Kingston area for 21 years and was previously from Caseville.

He was born on April 20, 1938 in Cass City, Michigan, son to the late Clifton and Goldie (Parson) Champion.

He graduated from Cass City High School in 1956.

He married Mary Lou Waterkutter on June 19, 1976 in Caseville.

He was a member of the Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marlette.

He worked for Carl Thom Farm and Drainage.

He enjoyed wood working, hunting, gardening, his dog Sadie and, most of all, his family.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; two sons, Gerald and Alice Petty of Lapeer and Mark and Judy Champion of Marlette; two daughters, Marci and Blake Brooks of Honor and Samara Champion and fiancee Dan Paling of Grand Rapids, MI. and five grandchildren, Aaron, Gerald, Christopher, Zane and Peyton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marlette with Rev. Eric Kilmer officiating. Interment was in Elkland cemetery in Cass City.

Memorials may be given to Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Arrangements by Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette.

WILLIAM J. ROGERS
William J. Rogers, 68, of Clifford, formerly of St. Clair Shores, passed away Friday, March 5, 2004 in Bon Secours Hospital, Grosse Pointe. He was born March 26, 1935 in Royal Oak.
He retired in 1987 as a department of public works foreman after 32 years of employment with the City of St. Clair Shores. Raised in Warren, he graduated from Lincoln High School and also resided in Bartow, FL.

He coached Little League basketball in the St. Clair Shores Basketball Association and football for the Green Hornets team.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; children, Robert (Joy), Sarah Ruckman, Laurie (Noel) Bissinger, Joe (Karen), Daniel (Liza), Tim Rogers, Becky Rogers, Jennifer (Scott) McCormick and Theresa (John) Webster; brother-in-law, Jack Blower; brother, Jack Rogers; 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the way.

He was predeceased by his parents, William E. and Theresa V. Rogers.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at the Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Home, St. Clair Shores.

HELEN BARBARA DECKER
Helen Barbara Decker, 84, of Marlette, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at Port Huron Hospital in Port Huron.
She was born on December 19, 1919 in Yale, the daughter of the late Jay and Hattie Merrill Weymouth.

Her marriage to Earl Decker was on June 14, 1944 in Ionia, Michigan. He preceded her in death in September, 1963.

She earned her bachelor degree in teaching from Eastern University of Michigan and taught for 20 years, mostly in Yale, until her retirement in 1975.

She attended the Yale United Methodist Church where she was a former organist. She loved music and reading.

She will be sadly missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Becky Decker of Marlette and their daughter, Grace Decker.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Robinson and three brothers, Carl, Mark and Merrill.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, March 5, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kranz Funeral Home, Yale with Rev. Jack Allan of the Yale United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment was in South Colon cemetery, Colon Township.

Memorials may be given to the Yale Public Library.

ESTHER VIOLA GRODY
Esther Viola Grody was born November 21, 1915 in Williamsburg, MI. during a snow storm.
She was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Bessie (DeGroat) Grody.

She grew up attending the Dakota Avenue Missionary Church in Detroit. Early in her teens, she committed her life to Christ. She graduated from Clawson High School and then took nurses training at Grace Hospital in Detroit. After graduation, she became a nurse at Munson Hospital in Traverse City. She spent four years as a navy nurse during World War II. Lieutenant Grody was stationed at Mare Island, California at Dutch Harbor, Alaska, at Stillwater, Oklahoma and Philadelphia. Following her wartime service, she graduated from Houghton College and later trained as a midwife.

She spent 25 years as a missionary in Africa. The first African years were in Nigeria beginning in 1947. Then the next 21 years she was a missionary in Sierra Leone working mainly with the Themne tribe. She established a leprosy clinic and a maternity clinic. She carried on various medical and Biblical ministries. She delivered well over a hundred babies. Her Mayoso Clinic was responsible for a major decrease in the infant mortality rate. She often hiked for many miles to villages to give treatment. In 1973, she was a nurse at Marlette Community Hospital. She later lived in Brown City, then Mancelona and finally in Lapeer.

She was a member of the Lamotte Missionary Church of Marlette, and was devoted to Christ, a loving and patient woman. Her belief in the power of prayer led her to constant commitment to prayer. She led Bible studies and was watchful of opportunities to present Christ.

Her two sisters Myrtle and Dr. Eldad Vanderlip of California and Betty and Rev. Eugene Sims of Lapeer will miss her. She passed away on March 6, 2004.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lamotte Missionary Church Marlette with Rev. Gerald Steele and Rev. James Keller officiating. Interment was in the Kingston cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Special Missionary Fund.

SHIRLEY MABEL WARNER
Shirley M. Warner, 83, a life long resident of Marlette, passed away Friday, February 27, 2004 at her home.
She was born on May 16, 1920 in Marlette, daughter to the late Walter and Beulah (Dale) Ford.

She graduated from Marlette High School in 1938.

She worked as a cook for the Marlette Community Hospital for 20 years and also farmed.

She enjoyed collecting cook books, hunting, baby sitting her grandchildren, and, most of all, her family.

She is survived by her son, Terry and Linda Warner of Marlette; daughter-in-law, Juanita Warner of Bertram TX.; brothers, Dale and Thelma Ford of Marlette and Wayne Ford of Cassopolis, MI.; sisters, Thelma Warner of Pigeon, MI. and Phyllis Thomas of Marysville, MI.; grandchildren, Toni, Shannon, Karen, Cody, Rich, Nicole, Andrew and Cory; and great-grandchildren, Shaina and Kira.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael and brother, Bud Ford.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette with Rev. John R. Allan officiating. Interment was at the Marlette cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Marlette District Library.

Casketbearers included Richard, Andrew, Shannon and Karen Warner, Ralph Ford and Bill Demaray.

NADJA E. HEUSSNER
Nadja E. HEUSSNER, 69, passed away Saturday, February 28, 2004 at the Marlette Community Hospital.
She was born on August 9, 1934 in Escanaba, Michigan.

She is survived by several cousins and specials friends at the Ellsworth Home in Marlette.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Ruth Heussner; a brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Lilia Jean.

She loved cats and, most of all, her friends.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette with Rev. Kenneth Parker of the Marlette Second Presbyterian Church officiating.

Burial will be in the Marlette cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the United Hospice Service or a donation of choice.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.

LILLIAN DOENCH
Lillian Doench, 83, passed away Friday, February 27, 2004 at Fisher Convalescent Home in Mayville, Michigan.
She lived in Irons, Michigan for 12 years and was previously from the Silverwood area.

She was born on June 13, 1920 in Armada, Michigan, daughter of the late Albert and Rose (Shadwald) Koehler.

She graduated from Marlette High School in 1939.

She married Durwood Doench on January 30, 1959 in Marlette. He preceded her in death on January 8, 2004.

She was a member of the Birthday's Club and Ladies Extension Club in Silverwood area for many years.

She loved cats, enjoyed sowing, knitting, crocheting and, most of all, her family.

She is survived by a son, Bud (Rhonda) Benjamin of Caro, MI; daughters, Barbara (Fred) Weigel of Melbourne, FL., Mabel (Richard) Vassallo of Silverwood, Sharon (Jim) Swadling of Fostoria, and Pam Shute of Wellston, MI.; a sister, Dorothy Rappuhn of Brown City; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, brothers, Carl and George Koehler and a grandson, Steve Weigel.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette with Inc. Rev. Kenneth Sandefur of the Kingston Wesleyan Church officiating.

Memorials may be given to the Fisher Convalescent Home or the donation of your choice.

Cremation followed the service at the Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City with burial of cremation beside her husband at the West Burlington cemetery in Silverwood.
