JUDITH (BERDEN) HURD
Judith (Berden) Hurd passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007 at Covenant Healthcare, Harrison at the age of 65 years.
The daughter of Gertrude (Moffit) and the late James Berden was born September 23, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan. She married David A. Hurd, May 4, 1963. He survives her.

She graduated from Sandusky High School, Class of 1959, and the Port Huron School of Nursing. She was employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Marlette Community Hospital, Saginaw Osteopathic Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, Saginaw General Hospital and retired from Covenant Cooper in 2004 after being a nurse for 43 years. She was a member of Bridgeport Community Church.

Surviving besides her husband and mother are three sons, Kevin Hurd and his wife, Mindy, Carrolton, MI.; Jeffrey Hurd, Bridgeport, MI.; Jason Hurd, Ann Arbor, MI.; seven grandchildren, Colin, Tyler, Alli, Kaycee, Lexie, Lindsay and Colby; her brother and sister-in-law, John and Myrna Berden, Elkhart, IN; mother-in-law, Pauline Hurd: a very special sister-in-law, Paula (Hurd) Phillips and her husband, Clyde; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Ellen Hurd; many nieces and nephews and special friends, Karen and Nick Jussila.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2007 at Bridgeport Community Church, 3821 State St. Rev. Ronald L. Sinclair will officiate. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the American Cancer Society. www.casefuneralhome.com

ANNA LEILA SCHER
Anna Leila Scher, 84, of Kaukauna, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2007. She was born on October 31, 1922, in Kingston, Michigan, to the late Arthur and Mildred (Michler) Harneck. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She served in the Army Nurse Corps, European Theater of Operation, and was assigned to a hospital ship, plus both station and field hospitals. Her most memorable war experience was caring for wounded aboard a medical ship off Normandy Beach as one of five nurses responsible for hundreds of soldiers.

In 1970, she and Professor of Nursing Barb Weaver of Capital University participated with nursing students in the study of aerospace nursing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Advisor for the project was Lt. Col. Pearl Tucker, Chief Nurse to the Apollo astronauts, who originated an aerospace nursing program for the Air Force at Cape Kennedy. The nurses were introduced to human factors involved in aerospace travel, environmental health, toxicology and stresses of sound and vibration. University officials believe that they were the first non-military organization to be given an opportunity to participate in the aerospace program. Their investigation centered on both the physiologic and emotional environments of space. During her years at Capital University she served on the nursing faculty and continued her interest in aerospace nursing. She also served as advisor to Angel Flight, a service organization associated with AFROTC and the Praetorian’s, the women’s drill team from which she received its Outstanding Service Award. Her professional and educational activities included the Aerospace Medical Association; the Nurses Coordinating Council for C.E.; and the District, State and National Nurses Association. She retired from Capital University in 1980 with status of Professor Emeritus.

Survivors include her sons, Jerry (Jo Ann) Duley, Menasha, and Rick (Patt) Duley, Stockbridge; her grandchildren, Jacqueline (Kevin) Pudwill, Leesberg, Virginia; Janine (Stephen) Werner, Janesville, Wisconsin; Michele Duley, Portland, Oregon; and Joseph Duley, Boynton Beach, Florida; her great grandchildren, Jack and Mason Pudwill; Meghan, Zachary and Caitlin Werner; Kiersten Duley; her brother, Ivan Harneck, Marlette, Michigan; and her spouse, Samuel Scher, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Memorial services were conducted at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2007, at St. Paul Home Chapel, 316 East 14th Street, Kaukauna, with Deacon Gerry Schraufnagel officiating. Private committal services will be held at the Wisconsin Veterans cemetery in King, Wisconsin, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contribution in her name may be made to St. Paul ECF and the Women in Military Service Memorial (Dept. 560, Washington, D.C. 20042-0560). The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Brian Scott and the staff at St. Paul Home for their loving care.

ALDEN BERNARD “BARNEY” FREIBURGER
A. Bernard Freiburger, 86, of Cass City, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2007 in Hills & Dales General Hospital following a short illness.
He was born April 21, 1920 in Argyle to Sigmund and Everene (Morrell) Freiburger. He married Jacqueline “Jackie” Sullivan on June 8, 1946 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sandusky. She died January 17, 2004.

He served in the US Navy during WW11 in North Africa, Suez Canal, Iran, Scotland, England and Italy. He was in Naples during the invasion of Southern France and was “missing in action” for several months. The couple made their home in Cass City after their wedding. They owned and operated a grocery store and butter creamery wit his brother Alger Freiburger, formerly known as Kinney Grocery & Creamery. He won first place at the State Fair in a butter contest. They closed the business in 1967. He managed the Mill End stores in Bad Axe and East Tawas starting in 1946 until 1968.

He was a member of the Gavel Club, holding many office positions and helped build the track at the park. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, serving as President in 1953. He was also a member of the Community Club, holding many offices and a member of the Village Council for several terms during which he was responsible for finding the Cass City Dump site. He worked with the village creating Christmas Town. He helped create the decorations for downtown and was one of the Three Wise Men in the Christmas pageant. He was a member of the St. Pancratius Church since 1945, serving on the Church Board and as a volunteer.

He is survived by his children: Linda (Homer) Bailey of Cass City, Bernard “Butch” (Joyce) Freiburger of Lake Orion, Kurt Freiburger of Wyoming, MI; grandchildren: Lisa Kamrad, Laura Edwards, Leana Edwards, Scott Freiburger, Jeff Freiburger, Heather Freiburger, Kimberly Freiburger, Christopher Freiburger; great-grandchildren: Alexa, Tyler, Kennedy, Makenna, Nicholas and Cassaundra; sister, Patricia Reinelt of Waterford and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sisters: Mabel Babcock, Merwina Volmer, Reeva Byrne, Gertrude Szarapski, Irene Freeman and a brother, Alger Frieburger.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2007 in St. Pancratius Catholic Church with Rev. Stephen J. Fillion officiating.

Interment was in St. Elizabeth cemetery, Marlette. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or St. Pancratius Catholic Church. Military honors under the direction of Cass City VFW Post #3644 and the U.S. Navy. Family and friends may share memories, prayers and stories with the family at www.kranzfuneralhome.com.

ROSE E. CAMPBELL
Rose E. Campbell, 84, passed away Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at the Marlette Regional Hospital in Marlette.
She had lived in the Clifford, Michigan area since 1978 and was previously from Lake Orion and Detroit.

She was born on November 12, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, daughter to the late John and Rose (Percha) Taube.

She married William W. Campbell on April 1, 1943 in Detroit. He preceded her in death in June of 1983.

She was a member of the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.

She enjoyed reading books, crossword puzzles, knitting, sewing, crafts and, most of all, her family.

She is survived by a son, William W. (Dorothy) Campbell III of Wichita, KS; three daughters, Connie (Bud) Angelus of Vero Beach, FL., Susan (George) Welch of Clifford, MI. and Esther (Kenneth) Lux of Clifford, MI.; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and special friends, Bonnie and Jeannie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, nine brothers and two sisters.

Cremation has taken place at the Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City, Michigan. A memorial service was conducted on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. in the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Marlette, with Fr. Edward Poucher officiating.

Memorials may be donated to the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.

DONALD W. SCOTT
Donald W. Scott, 56, of Carsonville, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at the Port Huron Hospital in Port Huron, Michigan. He lived in Carsonville for the past three years and was previously from the Sandusky area.
He was born April 24, 1950 in Brown City, Michigan, son to the late Joseph and Elnor (Stone) Scott.

He served his country in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Scott was a self employed electrician in the area.

He was a member of the N.R.A.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, doing handy work and, most of all, spending time with his boys.

He is survived by his two sons, Michael Scott of Fredericksburg, VA and Joseph Scott of Fontana, CA; special friend, Joan Zwelinski of Carsonville, MI., and brother, Jimmy Scott.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette, with Rev. Douglas Richardson of the Good News Assembly of God Church officiating.

Burial was in the Burnside Twp. cemetery in Brown City.

Memorials may be donated to the family.

KATHRYN JANE TYRELL
Kathryn Jane Tyrell, 80, of Marlette, passed Saturday, February 10, 2007 at Holland Hospital in Holland, Michigan.
She was born February 20, 1926 in Marlette, Michigan, the daughter of the late John and Margaret (McLean) Kirk.

She was a lifelong area resident and 1943 graduate of Marlette High School. She married Bernard Tyrell on May 11, 1946 in Marlette. He died on April 4, 2004.

She was a member of the Marlette First Presbyterian Church, the Red Hats and was past Marlette City Treasurer.

She is survived by a daughter, Pam and Mike Jalacki of Rockford; a son, Pat and Deb Tyrell of Owosso; granddaughters, Stacy VanDenHout and Margaret Tyrell and a grandson, Christopher Jalacki.

Besides her husband and parents she was preceded in death by sisters, Bernice and Jeane.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Marlette First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mark Morningstar officiating. Burial will be in the Marlette cemetery in Marlette.

Casketbearers are Levi VanDenHout, Chris Jalacki, Kirk Dale, Eddie Grunewald, Sid Thompson and Jim Phillips.

Memorial suggestions to Marlette First Presbyterian Church.

NAOMI A. LINDSAY
Naomi Arloa (Gibson) Lindsay went to meet our heavenly Father on February 6, 2007, after a long illness.
She was born on February 3, 1921, to Reverend Ernest and Mary (Flannigan) Gibson, in Battle Creek, Michigan.

She married Alexander Lindsay on May 15, 1942. He went to heaven on December 6, 1996. They made their home and raised their children on a farm near Shabbona in Evergreen Township before retiring in Augres, Michigan.

She was a member of the Shabbona Methodist Church and the Cass City Missionary Church.

She enjoyed entertaining, music, preaching, shopping, sewing, and, most of all, her family.

She is survived by two daughters, Joanie Merchant and Patrick Davis of Cass City and Charlotte and Wayne Conaway of Glendale, Arizona; one son, Paul Lindsay; one daughter-in-law, Jacque Lynn Lindsay of Colorado Springs, CO; one sister, Irma (Gibson-Kennedy) Jacobs of Caro, MI; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Emma (Gibson) Nichols and two brother-in-laws, Floyd Kennedy and Harm Nichols.

A celebration of her life took place on Friday, February 9, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette, with Rev. Robert Sweeney officiating. Interment was held at the Evergreen cemetery in Shabbona.

Memorials may be made to the Cass City Missionary Church or the Shabbona United Methodist Church.

Casketbearers are her nephews Dallas Nichols, Phil Nichols, Doug Nichols, Don Ouvry, Bob Parrott, Andy Nichols and David Lindsay.

MICHAEL JAMES BORROMEY
Michael James Borromey, 36, of Perry, passed away February 1, 2007.
He was born June 18, 1970 in Lapeer. Surviving are his infant son, Benjamin Borromey; girlfriend, Lisa Batterman of Rochester Hills; parents, Philip Borromey and wife Donna of Davison, Barbara and husband William Gielow of Marlette; grandmother, Marylou Watterworth. He was preceded in death by is grandparents, Bruno and Hurley Borromey of Davison and Thomas Watterworth of Sebewaing.

Visitation was held 1-7 p.m. Sunday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. A private burial will be held.
