Charlene Koppel
Charlene M. Koppel, 78, of Port Huron, passed away on Sunday, August 5, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born in Croswell on September 5, 1928 daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stover.
On September 19, 1949, Charlene married
Charles A. Koppel. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1986.
Charlene is survived by her brother, Howard (Virginia) Stover of Croswell; sister-in-law, Beverly Koppel of Fort Gratiot; brother-in-law, H. Lee (Lois) Koppel of Arizona; brother-in-law, Robert H. Koppel, Sr. of Fort Gratiot and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Chuck and brothers Charles and Harold Stover.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 7 in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The Rev. C. Paul Higdon will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the Ruby Lions Club or the Blue Water Area Humane Society.
Elke Kelp
Elke Kelp, 54 of Port Huron, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital. She was born December 6, 1952 in Konigshart, Germany and moved to Detroit in 1963.
Elke graduated from Cass Tech High School, Detroit, received her Associates Degree from SC4, her BA from University of Michigan-Flint, and her Masters Degree from Central Michigan University. Years ago she worked as a pharmacy technician in various hospitals.
After moving to Port Huron in 1980, Elke worked as a counselor at DARES and was currently a counselor with the Professional Counseling Center.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband, Harold Kelp, who she married
March 18, 1993 in Las Vegas. Recently she became a member of Colonial Woods Missionary Church.
Elke is survived by her husband, Harold D. Kelp; her father, Robert A. McIlhagga of Port Huron; three brothers, Mark W. (Maxine) McIlhagga of Dry Ridge, KY, Robert A. (Jerri) McIlhagga of Riverside, CA, & Samuel D. (Kristin) McIlhagga of Albion; and various nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, & cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Erika McIlhagga, who passed away April 29, 2006.
Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. on Thursday, July 19, 2007 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 12:00 Noon Friday in Colonial Woods Missionary Church with visitation in the church one hour prior to the service. Pastor Stanley Liechty will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery.

Edward Kearns
Edward W. "Ted" Kearns, Sr, 85, of Port Huron, died Monday, September 24, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital.
Ted was born February 23, 1922 in Port Huron, son of the late Thomas J. And Mary Ryan Kearns, and was a life long resident. He married
the former Elizabeth J. "Betty" Ricketts September 4, 1943 in Port Huron. She preceded him in death September 13, 2006.
Ted was a graduate of St. Stephen High School. Together with his wife, Betty, he founded Kearns Agency where he was involved until his death.
He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Corps.
He was a founding member of St. Mary Church, member of Port Huron Golf Club, B.P.O.E. #343, L.O.O.M. #158, Charles Hammond Post #8, American Legion, the American Legion Dance Club, Council #521, Knights of Columbus and past president of the Breakfast Optimists. His professional memberships included the Eastern Thumb Association of Realtors and the Independent Insurance Agents of Michigan.
Ted was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather; his family was his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn (Bill) Bonnaci of Port Huron; sons, Dennis (Ceci) of Port Huron, Larry (Carla) of Jensen Beach, FL, Steve and Ted (Linda) Kearns, Jr. both of Port Huron; daughter, Maureen (Sandy) MacCallum of Ft. Gratiot; sons, Mark (Kelli) of Marysville and Tim (Jeanette) Kearns of Port Huron and daughter, Jackie (Ron) Mackensen of Port Huron; his grandchildren, Debbie (Mike) Reynolds, Joseph Bonnaci, Denise (Mark) Richard, Christine (Jayson Grossman, Cheryl (Kevin) Stein, Bob (Annmarie) Kearns, Heather (Joe) Shimmel, Tiffany Kearns, Raechel (Eric) Witter, Danielle (Don) Truscott, Matthew Kearns, Ashley, Cassie and Colleen MacCallum, Eric and Geofrey Kearns, Tara Cuthbertson, Emily Kearns and Ronnie and Tommy Mackensen; 14 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Shirley Kearns of Port Huron and several nieces and nephews.
Ted was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary, Margaret Letzgus and Kate Brogan; his brothers, Bob, Tom, Bill, Jack and Al Kearns; his daughter-in-law, Theresa Kearns and his grandson, Jeremy Mackensen.
Ted's funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday in St. Mary Church. The Reverend Simeon T. Iber, Pastor, will preside. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery with Military rites under direction of St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Pallbearers will be Joe Bonnaci, Bob, Matt, Eric and Geof Kearns and Ronnie Mackensen.
Visiting hours for Ted are 7 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday (9/26) and 2 to 4:00 and 7 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday (9/27) in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 9:00 a.m. Friday at the church. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Thursday.

Irvin Claseman
Irvin H. Claseman, 89, of Port Huron, died Saturday, September 29, 2007 in his home with his family by his side.
He was born September 1, 1918 in Clinton, Iowa and had lived in Port Huron since 1962.
Irv received a bachelor's and a master's degree from Purdue University where he pitched for the Baseball team and was a lifetime member of Purdue's "P" Men's Athletic Club.
He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.
Irv married
Marilyn Butz May 28, 1945 in Lafayette, IN.
Irv Claseman was first and foremost a teacher. He was coach and Athletic Director as Cass City High School from 1947 to 1962 and became coach and Athletic Director at Port Huron Catholic from 1962 to 1971. He taught and coached at Port Huron Central and then at Port Huron Northern until his retirement. "Coach Claseman" was inducted into the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990 and was also a member of the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame. He loved sports whether he was playing, coaching or watching them.
In his retirement years, Irv enjoyed walking at the Mall with his friends, watching sports and spending time with his grandson. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Irv always said he had a good life. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marilyn; his daughter, Judy Claseman of St. Clair Shores; son, Tim Claseman of Corpus Christi, TX; grandson, Ben Claseman of St. Clair Shores; and his sister, Nadine (Ray) Krogman of Clinton Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Cyril, Francis and Roger and his sister, Diane.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday (10/2) in St. Joseph Church. The Rev. Brian Cokonougher, pastor, will preside. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery.
Visitation is 2 to 4:00 and 6 to 9:00 p.m. Monday (10/1) in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A Scripture Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Memorials in his memory may be made to the Irvin H. Claseman Scholarship Fund for a deserving college student athlete.
Elizabeth Howell
Elizabeth Hazely Howell was born December 14, 1921, in Letohatchie, Alabama to Wilbert and Susie Hazely, and has lived in Port Huron since 1926. She married
John S. Howell on April 11, 1942 in Port Huron, who preceded her in death after 53 years of marriage. Mother Howell departed this life June 29, 2007. Mother Howell retired from Prestolite Wire and Cable, Port Huron. She graduated from Port Huron High School in 1939. Mother Howell was a very active member of New Covenant Life Ministries, serving on the Mother's Board, teaching Sunday School, and overseeing the Prayer Ministry. She cheerfully gave her talent as a soloist at many church and community events for many years. She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons; John S. (Sandra) Howell, Jr. of Fort Gratiot, Gil Howell of Port Huron; one daughter, Ila Lynne (Jeffry) Nickerson of Lansing; five grandchildren, John S. Howell III of Sterling Heights, Matthew J. (Jacqueline) Howell of Port Huron, Jenny Howell of Fort Gratiot, Andria Nickerson of Columbus, Ohio, Michelle Nickerson of Lansing; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Howell, Jr. and Ajaviya Howell of Port Huron; two sisters, Susie Winfield and Ila Shoulders of Port Huron; one brother, Charles (Lola) Hazely of Detroit; four sisters-in-law, Magdaline Hazely of Port Huron, Delores Hazely of Detroit, Lenzola (Everett) Johnson of Youngstown, Ohio, and Jeannie Johnson of Muskegon Heights; four brothers-in-law, James (Katie) Howell of Muskegon, Frank Howell of Ann Arbor, Lee (Jennifer) Howell of Los Angeles, California, Kennedy (Janice) Howell of Inglewood, California; one aunt, Eugenia Jones of Detroit, and a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was also preceded in death by her mother, father and 20 sisters and brothers.
She had a loving heart, a giving spirit and she will truly be missed by all who knew her. The funeral service will take place at 12 noon Friday, July 6 in New Covenant Life Ministries Church, 1302 Lapeer Ave. with Pastor Veter Nichols officiating. Visitation will be at the Church on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Memorials may be made to New Covenant Life Ministries Prayer Ministry. Smith Family Funeral Home - North was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Maxine Higgins
Maxine A. "Mickie" Higgins, 84, of Yale, died Tuesday, July 24, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born February 21, 1923 in Muskegon and had lived the last 58 years in Yale.
Mickie married
Robert H. Higgins October 12, 1940 in Vassar, MI.
Mickie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she was the best cook in Yale.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 67 years, Robert of Yale; her children, William R. (Margaret) Higgins of Yale, James H. (Carol) Higgins of Goodrich, Thomas K. (Patty) Higgins of Yale and Barbara L. (Paul) Postill of Marysville; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Ruth Farthing of Saginaw, Ruby (Lester) Hall of Honor, MI, and Doris Koepke of Atlanta, GA. She was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Kile.
Cremation arrangements under direction of Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 4:30 p.m. in the Yale United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jack Allan, Pastor, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Yale United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
Frieda Hepting
Frieda A. Hepting, 87, died Saturday, June 30, 2007 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born October 20, 1919 in Port Huron to the late Herman and Ida Jahn. She married
Robert A. Hepting on September 16, 1939 in Port Huron.
Mrs Hepting was a house wife. She enjoyed bingo and card games and was very good at crafts. She was a member of St. Mary Church.
Frieda is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert A. Hepting; son, James Hepting; daughters, Gloria (Bill) Austin and Sandra Kay Green; granddaughter, Lisa Brain; grandsons, Brian (Susie) Hall, Rickey (Rose) Hall, Jamie (Karry) Hepting and Robby Brain; 5 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Zmolik.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Paul, Albert, Otto, William and Carl Jahn and sisters, Helen Edie, Marie Johnson and Hilda Glashaw.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary Church, Port Huron. The Rev. Simeon T. Iber will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian Hall, Rickey Hall, Jamie Hepting, Robby Brain, Robert Zmolik and Frankie Zmolik.
Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday (7/2) at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 9 a.m. until the service time Tuesday (7/3) at church.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary Church.
Althea Harneck
Althea E. Harneck, age 89, left July 21, 2007 on the last leg of her long journey home.
She had battled Alzheimer's for several years but in the end she lost the war.
She was born August 20, 1917 to the late Herbert and Anna Chloe Perry.
One of 7 siblings, she was the last surviving member of her entire family.
She married
William H. Harneck on May 2, 1936, and had 53 happy years together before he passed away in 1989.
She is survived by 2 sons; James W. (Ruth) Harneck of Jeddo, Charles R. (Jackie) Harneck of Fort Gratiot, and a daughter, Carol E. Harneck of Jeddo.
She also has 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson.
In addition, there are 3 sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and 3 very dear friends in Florida; Grace Moyer, Ethel Gross, and Janet Dotson.
Her visitation will be Friday from 2-9 PM in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street.
The funeral will be at 11 AM Saturday in the funeral home preceded by one hour of visitation.
The Rev. Richard Shelton of Riverside Tabernacle Church of God will officiate.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Her grandsons and great-grandsons will be pallbearers. Memorials in her honor may be sent to the charity of the donor's choice.
Justin Hardman
Justin Barratt Hardman, age 23 of Chicago, Illinois and formerly of North Canton, Ohio passed away suddenly on July 26, 2007. An accomplished musician, Justin recently completed a ten city national tour with his band, Sombionx. He will be sadly missed by all of those who knew him.
Justin is survived by his parents, Jay and Suzanne Hardman; sisters, Kendall and Neville; brothers, Cullen and Hunter; grandparents, Beverley Hardman, Charles and Joan Kimball, Frank and Charlotte Bacon; and uncles, Jeff (Olga) Hardman, Joel Hardman, Jon Hardman, David Kimball, and Michael Kimball.
Calling hours will be Monday, July 30 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Smith Family Funeral Home, 1525 Hancock St., Port Huron, Michigan. A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the Canton Baptist Temple Worship Center 515 Whipple Ave. N.W., Canton, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Thelma Goheen
Thelma C. Goheen, 89, of Fort Gratiot Twp., passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital. She was born to Marshall and Elsie Shagena on April 26, 1918 in Argyle, MI and married
Carl Goheen in 1939.
Thelma worked at the Marysville Chrysler Plant, Prestolite Corp., and later at London's Farm Dairy. She enjoyed bowling, bingo, traveling, casinos, and playing cards. She especially liked to play euchre. She lived in the Gladwin, MI area for many years where she liked to go fishing. In her later years she loved to go down to the river and watch the boats.
Thelma had a great sense of humor and she liked to laugh and have fun. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia J. Stewart of Fort Gratiot; two grandsons, Steven Birtch of Bowie, TX and Edward "Ted" Birtch of Orlando, FL; two sisters, Virginia Schott of Marysville and Maxine (William) Green of Sandusky, MI; a brother, Virgil Shagena of Decker-ville; brother-in-law, Melvin (Eva) Goheen of Deckerville; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Goheen of Deckerville and Shirley Goheen of Sandusky; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, who died August 6, 1986, and a brother, Curt Shagena.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday (7/6) in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (7/7) in the funeral home with the Rev. Fr. C. Paul Higdon officiating. Burial will follow in Downing cemetery, Deckerville.
Pallbearers will be Robert Schott, Douglas Shagena, Kenneth Green, Victor and Kyle Rebenock, and Larry Campbell.
