Eugene Genaw
Eugene Genaw, age 78, of Port Huron, went to be with the Lord on New Year's Day, 2004.
He was born May 7, 1925 and raised in Port Huron by his late mother, Grace Blanche Birdie and his late father, Maxwell Genaw.
He was a member of the Fighting 36th Infantry. He served in the Great War, World War II. He fought and was wounded in Germany on Dec. 16, 1944 at the Battle of the Bulge where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He also fought in Africa during the Campaign to capture Rommell (the Desert Fox) and was involved with the capture of some of his highest military advisors. There he received the second Bronze Star. He also fought at Normandy (the beaches we all know in Saving Private Ryan) where he was wounded for a second time and received his second Purple Heart. He also fought in Italy on the beaches of Anzio where he finally was sent home after being wounded again, for his third and final Purple Heart.
He was a lifelong member of the Disabled Veterans of American. He had many hobbies and interests and was very accomplished in many. He loved cards and was a great Spades player, but he was invincible when it came to Cribbage! Eugene also loved to drink coffee and play video golf. He loved baseball and the World Series, but there was nothing he cared more about than the New York Yankees.
He loved bingo and at times was quite successful (we call it lucky). His best friend and bingo buddy, George Lasky and he would go to Sarnia, get fish and chips and play bingo. They always split it down the middle, 60/40.
Eugene loved to camp with his family in the Northern Woods of Michigan. He especially loved going to Oscoda and catching big messess of Blue Gills and giving some to people less fortunate. He loved the River Road Scenic By Way, Lumber Mans Monument and the Cook Dam. He was a lifetime member of the Golden Age National Wildlife Federation in the Huron National Forest. He was a great walleye fisherman for over 70 years. He always only took what he needed and never hesitated to let the big one get away! He loved to travel around the Nations Highways, always looking to travel down country roads searching for a glimpse of wildlife. He especially loved seeing wild pheasant, geese and deer. He often sat and watched in his back yard or room, knowing when the geese would fly over.
Eugene also duck hunted with his sons at Harsens Island and Fish Point in Sebewaing, MI. He loved the Quanacasse River and caught more than his share of Perch there, as well as ice fishing on Anchor Bay.
Eugene also loved country music, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton and Jim Reeves as well as soft rock like Billy Joel, Bob Seager and Janis Joplin.
Eugene is survived by his loving wife and soul mate of 56 years, Mrs. Patsy Jean Genaw, they will forever be linked together in love, harmony and togetherness, because they shared the same passions, one, A #1 daughter, Patricia Millie Ann Genaw whom he coveted as his Little Girl; son, Mike, who was not only his son, but his "Very Best Friend" who will miss him forever. His beloved bassett hound, Kandy, who looks for his soul daily; also a son, Paul E. Genaw and wife, Joyce; and grandsons, Maxwell and Michael of Chatham, MI. He leaves behind his very loving granddaughter, Leslie Marie, who has always brightened his smile and enlightened his heart, as well as her husband, Keith. A great-grandson, Jack, who he barely had time to spend time with and his little special grandson, Alex, who he enjoyed talking about cars with; a very special friend, Ms. Katherine Holth of Port Huron who not only touched his heart, but also reached out to enrich our lives as well; Carol Sue McCue, neighbor, friend and confidant, she made him popcorn and beautiful crafts, but most of all made him smile and laugh. Also a very close friend, Sarah McCue who has many of her mothers great qualities, second son, Jeffrey (Poopy) Little who accompanied him on special fishing expeditions and Todd (Oddly) Odle who saw him catch the biggest brown trout ever! His loving brother, Nyles (Red) Genaw, whom he loved to hunt, fish and tell lies with, his wife, Donna and their two children, Mary Lynn and David; also good friend and partner, Dave Hubbard, Bill "Fred" Eveningred who was always ready at the net as well as the smoker.
