Margaret Short
Margaret A. Short, age 78, of Port Huron died August 5, 2003 in Mercy Hospital Emergency Room.
She was born November 12, 1924 in Port Huron and was a life long resident.
She married
Richard J. Short, he preceded her in death on June 29, 1977.
Margaret was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary #449, Irish American Club, Vivians, Marysville Womens Club and T.O.P.S. She published memoirs of her mother which are at the St. Clair County Library. She was active at Marwood Manor where she served on the board, the friendship force in Michigan and Montana, 4-H clubs and the Farm Bureau Extension. Margaret traveled to Japan, Korea Germany and England hosting families from Germany and Korea. She was also with her husband 1st Lt. Richard J. Short while he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Margaret resided in Michigan, Maryland and Montana.
She is survived by son, Dr. Richard D. (Rhoda) Short, Ubly; son, Robert E.P. (Cindy) Short, Livingston, MT; daughter, Katherine Ann Cynthia (Ted) Nelson, Columbus, MT; daughter, Anita Marie (Troy) Kummer, Reno, NV; 14 grandchildren; one great grandson; sister, Patricia Harris, Largo, Florida; brother, Dick (Mert) Sullivan, Port Huron; sister, Agnes Myron, Port Huron; sister, Katherine Lounsbury, Sarnia; and brother, Tom (Carol) Sullivan, Port Huron.
Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. on Friday in St. Joseph Church. The Rev. Rene L. Desmarais, Pastor will officiate.
Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.
Visiting hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 10:30 to 12 noon Friday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family.
James Rankin
James F. Rankin, age 74, of Fort Gratiot, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 31, 2003 in St. John Hospital, Detroit.
He was born April 29, 1929 in Port Huron, son of the late Clifford E. and Marie Rankin.
James married
Isabelle L. Cameron on Sept. 12, 1953 in Angola, Indiana.
Jim graduated from Port Huron High School, attended Port Huron Junior College and then the University of Michigan.
Upon joining the army and serving his time in Alaska (finally becoming a veteran of the Korean War). Jim was employed as a Deputy Sheriff under Lucas and then Pettingill. A change in direction brought him to apprentice at the Times Herald as a journeyman printer where he worked for a number of years, then he was employed for 25 years at the Chicago Tribune.
Jim was employed and retired from the Federal Government Printing Office (GPO) where he was detailed to several Senate committees. He enjoyed many years of retirement while living in Florida and Fort Gratiot. He was an accomplished dancer, bridge and cribbage player. Additionally, he enjoyed socializing, bicycling and walking his dog.
Jim is survived by his wife, Isabelle; daughters, Tanya (Tom) Smythe of Allegan, Lisa (Mike) Ullenbruch of Fort Gratiot; grandchildren, Caitlin Smythe, Colin Smythe, Jamie Ullenbruch, Anne Marie Ullenbruch; and his great-grandson, Isaak Ullenbruch.
Family and friends are invited to the Wadhams Banquet Center, 5078 Lapeer Road, Kimball on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003 starting at 2 p.m. for a "Celebration of Life" party.
Memorial tributes may be made to the wishes of the family.
Private family inurnment will be held at Lakeside cemetery.

Alvin MacLean
Alvin A. MacLean, age 72, of Burtchville Twp., died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003 in Port Huron Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born June 6, 1931 in Port Huron and was a life long area resident.
He married
Marcie Schweikart on July 31, 1954 in Angola, Indiana. She died Aug. 19, 2000.
Mr. MacLean worked 26 years for the Ford Motor Company as a Millwright, worked for Mueller Brass for 12 years, and also was a farmer.
He served his country with the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He also enjoyed black powder Civil War weaponry, and was a member of the N.S.S.A. and the N.R.A.
Mostly, he loved to spend time with family and friends. He was a steady, faithful and compassionate Christian, who lived out the meaning of his faith.
He is survived by three sons and a daughter, Alvin A. (Debra) MacLean II of Jeddo, Hugh G. (Linda) MacLean, Patrick S. (Vicky) MacLean and Elizabeth A. (Kenneth) Green, all of Burtchville Twp., 12 grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Marcie Lucille Debrick of Burtchville Twp. and his dear friend, Stella Knak, also of Burtchville Twp.
He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Laurel J. Vernocke.
The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in North Lakeport Wesleyan Church with Pastor Joseph Braisted officiating.
A committal service will follow at Lakeport cemetery. His family will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. and at church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
Memorials may be made to the North Lakeport Wesleyan Church.
Frederick Laber
Mr. Frederick Laber, 68, of Port Huron went home to be with the Lord, August 1, 2003 after a short illness.
He was born May 25, 1935 in Port Huron to the late Henry and Katherine Laber, who came to the United States from Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution. Their German ancestors had immigrated to Russia during the reign of Catherine the Great.
He married
his childhood sweetheart and soul mate, Patricia G. Gougeon on Sept. 22, 1956 in Port Huron.
Mr. Laber managed the Military Street Fruit Market from 1949 until 1987, and was a Realtor in the Port Huron area since 1984. He was a Past President of the Board of Realtors, and was named outstanding Realtor of the year in 1998. He was a life long member of St. John's United Church of Christ and a former President of the church council. He was a member of the New Horizons Band.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; three children, Mr. and Mrs. Ricky (Brenda) Laber of Grand Ledge, Mr. and Mrs. Dean (Sharyl "Till") Lewandowski of Harrison and Michael Laber and Scott Long of Port Huron; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother, Mr. and Mrs. Henry "Hank" (Mary Ann) Laber; four sisters, Mr. and Mrs. David (Elizabeth) Arkills, Rose Gulley, Mary Janke and Mr. and Mrs. Rodney (Katie) Grahn; a sister-in-law, Delores Laber; and many nieces and nephews.
A brother, David, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Reverend Arthur Habermehl will officiate.
Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery, Port Huron.

Ronald Kovatch
Ronald P. Kovatch Sr., age 64, of Avoca, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003 in his home after a short illness.
He was born July 24, 1939 in Port Huron. He grew up in the area. For 30 years he lived in Oakland County, and just recently moved to Avoca.
He married
Carol Ann Monton on June 20, 1970 in Port Huron.
He worked for General Motors. Ron was a giving person who always was concerned with helping others. Everyone who met him, liked him, and he will be greatly missed by family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Kovatch of Avoca; a son, Ronald Paul Kovatch Jr. of Avoca; his granddaughter, Allison Taylor Kovatch of White Lake, MI; his sister, Jeanette (Ken) Cameron of Hadley, MI; his brother, Frank (Rhea) Kovatch of Illinois; and many other family members and friends.
The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Port Huron with The Rev. David Caswell officiating. Burial will follow in Christian Memorial Cultural Center in Rochester, MI.
Friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Donald Hartsig
Donald E. Hartsig, 87, of Marysville, died Saturday, July 19, 2003 in his home.
He was born Oct. 29, 1915 in Detroit to the late Albert and Olive Hartsig.
He married
Marjorie L. Higgins on Oct. 23, 1943 in Detroit.
Mr. Hartsig retired as a police officer for the City of Detroit in 1967, after 25 years of service.
He loved golfing, fishing, painting, gardening and raising roses. He was a devoted father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; a son, Craig Hartsig of Harrison Twp.; a daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Tim (Pamela) Walendzik of St. Clair; three grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Bradley (Jackie) Walendzik, Corey and Bridgette Walendzik; a sister-in-law, Betty Hartsig of New Jersey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Marysville Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 in the First United Methodist Church of St. Clair. The Rev. Tom Schomaker will officiate.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery, Detroit.

John Aldea
Mr. John Aldea, age 86, of Marysville, formerly of Brockway, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 in his residence.
He was born on June 16, 1917 in Indiana Harbor, Indiana, son of the late Sam and Anna Aldea.
John married
Betty Marko. She passed away in 1987. He then married
Mary L. Seaton in 1988.
He was a longtime mechanic and farmer. John was a foster parent for 13 boys. He enjoyed wood crafting.
He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Aldea of Marysville; daughter and son-in-law, Annita and Robert Cassam of South Carolina; daughter-in-law, Gloria Aldea of Emmett; seven grandchildren, Troy (Lisa) Aldea, Tracy Aldea, Tedd (Katie) Aldea, Tara Aldea, Renae Cassam, Robert (Lindsay) Cassam and Lisa (George) Dunn; ten great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joyce Aldea of Naples, Florida; brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Anna Aldea of Northville; sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Tryan Gal of Livonia; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, John M. Aldea and a brother, Sam Aldea.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St. The Rev. James McLeod will officiate.
Burial will be in Memphis cemetery.
Visiting hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Edgar Dickson
Edgar J. Dickson, age 81, of Algonac, passed away Monday, July 14, 2003, due to injuries sustained in a automobile accident.
Ed was born Aug. 3, 1921 to the late Edgar and Hazel Dickson.
He married
Adeline Schultz on Oct. 15, 1949 in Pontiac.
He proudly served his country in World War II as a navel 1st Class Gunners Mate. He continued to serve his community as a Detroit Police Officer for 25 years and a Chrysler employee for 10 years.
Ed was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Algonac; V.F.W. Post 1278; D.A.V.; the Retired Detroit Police Officers Association; and the St. Clair County Council on Aging.
Ed's passion in life was fishing.
He was the beloved husband of his "true love" for 54 years, Adeline (Schultz) Dickson; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie Lou and Carlos Rendon of Houston; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Kathy Dickson of Warren; four grandchildren, Adelina (Gerardo) Rodriguez, Carlos "Tex" Rendon, Krista Dickson and Cody Dickson; and one great-grandson, Caleb Rendon. He is also remembered by a special niece, Amy Unger of St. Clair.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Velma; and a brother, Albert Dickson.
Memorial services to celebrate his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003 at Trinity United Methodist Church at 424 Smith Street, Algonac. Pastor Denny Irish will officiate.
Memorial tributes may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church.
